My dear friends, pray draw a little closer to the fire and prepare yourselves for an evening of dark mystery and Hammer Horror excellence. This week on the Scary Spirits Podcast, hosts Karen and Greg commemorate the anniversary of the theatrical release of the classic 1971 Hammer Films masterpiece, Hands of the Ripper, which first shocked audiences on July 15, 1972 in the United States. With the careful examination of devoted horror historians and the enthusiasm of true connoisseurs of the macabre, Karen and Greg delve into this chilling tale inspired by the sinister legacy of Jack the Ripper. Together, they explore the film's haunting atmosphere, memorable performances, Victorian-era terror, and the unique place it occupies within the celebrated Hammer Horror canon. Naturally, no investigation into such dark proceedings would be complete without proper refreshment. As the shadows lengthen, our hosts raise a glass of the appropriately themed “Bloody Dark & Stormy” cocktail, a devilishly delicious concoction crafted to complement the film's brooding mood and blood-soaked mystery. Whether you are a lifelong admirer of Hammer Horror films, a collector of classic British horror cinema, or simply searching for your next horror movie podcast, this episode offers an entertaining journey into one of Hammer’s most intriguing and underrated gems. Join us for a captivating discussion filled with suspense, horror history, and spirited cocktails as we celebrate Hands of the Ripper—a film that continues to cast a long and unsettling shadow over the genre more than five decades later. Bloody Dark & Stormy Cocktail • 2 oz Dark Rum (like Goslings Black Seal)• 4 to 5 oz Ginger Beer• 1/2 oz Fresh Lime Juice• The Ripper Twist: A heavy splash of Grenadine or Crème de Cassis (blackcurrant liqueur) Instructions: Fill a tall glass with ice. Add the ginger beer and lime juice. Gently float the dark rum on top to create a “storm cloud” effect. To finish, slowly drizzle the grenadine or cassis directly over the top—it will sink through the dark rum layer like a thread of blood. A Brief Synopsis: As a young child, Jack the Ripper’s daughter witnesses him kill her mother. As a young woman, she carries on the murderous reign of her father. A psychiatrist tries to cure her with tragic consequences. Some of the topics discussed and highlights of this episode include: We learn about the history of “stag” parties. Dr. Karen tells us a little bit about Sigmund Freud. St. Paul’s Whispering Gallery is discussed. Dr. Karen tells us what o do if you are run through with a sword. "What are you waiting for? Huh. What are you waiting for?" This movie is great! If you haven't watched it, go watch it! You will hear that line and so many other great lines written by Kevin Williamson. The synopsis of the film: A year after running over a fisherman and dumping his body in the water, four friends reconvene when Julie (Jennifer Love Hewitt) receives a frightening letter telling her that their crime was seen. While pursuing who he thinks is responsible for the letter, Barry (Ryan Phillippe) is run over by a man with a meat hook. The bloodletting only increases from there, as the killer with the hook continues to stalk Julie, Helen (Sarah Michelle Gellar) and Ray (Freddie Prinze Jr.).The HookIngredients1.5 oz Dark Rum (a nod to the coastal setting and the fateful, stormy night)1.5 oz Dark Cherry Heering or Chambord (for a rich, blood-red color)0.5 oz Fresh Lime Juice (for a tart, suspenseful bite)A splash of Grenadine (for that extra visual gore)DirectionsAdd the dark rum, cherry liqueur, and lime juice to a cocktail shaker filled with ice.Shake vigorously until chilled.Strain the mixture into a coupe or rocks glass.Slowly drizzle a splash of grenadine down the side of the glass so it sinks to the bottom, creating a murky, bleeding effect.Garnish: Thread two maraschino cherries onto a metal cocktail pick (or a sturdy metal straw) to mimic the killer's weapon! The NoteIngredients1.5 oz Spiced Rum0.5 oz Blue Curaçao1.5 oz Pineapple Juice0.5 oz Fresh Lime Juice0.5 oz Simple Syrup1 tbsp Grenadine (for the "blood" drizzle)Garnish: A strip of black licorice twisted into a hook shapeDirectionsPrepare the Hook: Take a standard strip of black licorice, curve the end into a hook shape, and set aside.Mix the base: In an ice-filled shaker, combine the spiced rum, pineapple juice, lime juice, and simple syrup. Shake vigorously until chilled. [1]Layer the "Ocean": Strain the shaken mixture into a hurricane glass or tumbler filled with crushed ice. Gently pour the Blue Curaçao over the back of a spoon into the glass to create a deep blue layer settling at the bottom. The Slasher Drizzle: Slowly drizzle the grenadine down the inside walls of the glass so it bleeds into the blue liquid. [1]Garnish: Rest your licorice "hook" on the rim of the glass and serve immediately with a jagged, handwritten note warning: "I Know What You Did Last Summer!”Drinking Game:Drink when...A message is received insinuating they know too muchYou see cleavageDrugs or alcohol are consumedA reference to a beauty pageant is madeA girl screamsThere is steam, smoke, or fog in a scene Anyone gets in a physical fightAnyone says “murder"Anyone says "David Egan" or "Billy Blue”Elsa is a bitchDrink 2x when:You see a boatSomeone singsYou see the killer's hookA dead body is discoveredTake a shot when:Someone diesAs always, drink responsibly and with others. If you are not watching Doctor Odyssey, you need to start now. It is one of those shows that is so cheesy that it's good. It's a guilty pleasure show for sure and I love it. I wanted to choose this episode because it features special guest stars Kelsea Ballerini and Margo Martindale as mother and daughter. I wasn't prepared for what this podcast episode turned out to be. Just so you know, Doctor Odyssey is about Max, who is the new on-board doctor for a luxury cruise ship where the small but mighty medical team navigate unique medical crises and each other, miles from shore. It stars Joshua Jackson, Phillipa Son, Sean Teale, Don Johnson and features so many guest stars, like the modern day Love Boat. Check it out on Hulu or on ABC.The Midnight Scalpel (I asked ChatGPT):Ingredients2 oz Dark Rum (bold and brooding, like the doc himself)0.75 oz Fresh Lime Juice (for a sharp, clinical edge)0.5 oz Ginger Syrup (zingy and exotic, just like the locales)1 dash of Angostura Bitters (adds complexity like a backstory)Splash of Activated Charcoal (for that inky, moody drama)Top with Club SodaGarnish: Thin cucumber ribbon & a metal cocktail pick (like a surgical tool)DirectionsShake rum, lime juice, ginger syrup, bitters, and charcoal with ice.Strain into a highball or Collins glass over fresh ice.Top with club soda for fizz and tension.Garnish with the cucumber ribbon and silver pick - because it's Dr. Max Bankman and he doesn't do basic. For a mocktail version called Code Black, replace the rum with black iced tea like Earl Grey or Lapsang and remove the bitters.Doctor Odyssey Drinking Game:Drink when...they are in the infirmary.you see a guest star.you see gold medical instruments.someone says "We're losing them!" or "I need ___ccs now!"their watch goes off.something super cheesy happens.sexual tension between any of the main characters.they have to resuscitate someone. the medical staff tries something new and risky to save a life.Take a shot when...someone goes overboard.you see a country superstar as a guest star.for a cliffhanger. As always, drink responsibly and with others. The Dark Rum Podcast where we discuss Monsters, Myths, & Mayhem. The Boys are back in 2024 with a brand-new completely unannounced season of Dark Rum. Like seems to happen every year the boys ended their previous season even though they don't have seasons and now they're back, and what better way to celebrate the return than with a return to everyone's favorite Bad Horror commentary series Horror So Bad It's Good; this time in the spirit of the holidays the boys watched "Silent Night" the 2012 loose remake of the 1984 controversial cult classic "Silent Night Deadly Night". This holiday movie is chocked full of a Killer Santa doing Killer Santa stuff, a handful of recognizable actors, terrible dialogue delivered terribly, no magic even though there were a few hints for no reason, pervy priest, Douchey Santa, Frank the Softcore Porn Guy, other Evil B-Plot Santa, and so many lens flares you normal-eyed people will finally understand the plight of those with an astigmatism! This was a bad one but you know what they say start the year off bad so there's no where to go but up! She knew she wanted to be an author from the day she first read A Wrinkle in Time when she was a child, and she grew up inspired by authors such as J. R. R. It has always been her dream to become a published author, and it is her hope to expand into multiple genres of fiction. http://linktr.ee/authormaphipps Rebecca is an American author who resides in the bucolic hills of West Virginia in the heart of Appalachia with her rugged husband, two hilarious daughters, and a small congress of animals. As you can see, she's fond of pretty words and has been since preschool. This is also probably why she wanted to be an author after reading Catherine Called Birdy when she was ten. This was the book that taught her how to say cuss words in a creative manner. On this week's episode Jarred is joined by Matt (from Dark Rum) to discuss the weirdest and most interesting news articles from all over the internet, covering everything from: A PA man "accidentally" shooting his neighbor in the head trying to shoot a deer (PA the only place you can stop your car, get out, and shoot a handgun at your neighbors lawn hit them in the head and you get 3 months!), Church raffles an AR15 flamethrower (Yeah I know that doesn't exist but that's what they give us to read, if given the option pick flamethrower though), Atlanta man was being evicted when the movers pulled a gun on him and stole his TV's (Police were there but then they left for apparently no reason but to let him get robbed by the "totally not a hitman team" Kils and Von), and TN hotel manager is in trouble when a guest woke up to find him sucking on their toes as they slept (New Nightmare Unlocked, we know). She talks about a long term acting gig job where she wore only a hospital gown. And she'll tell us how to make her Friday night go-to drink, a Dark and Stormy. Join us in this episode we spiral and lose our minds about Verity by Colleen Hoover. We make countless predictions while drinking an insane drink that will definitely make you sleepwalk. Zombie Sleepwalker Cocktail Recipe: 1 oz Dark Rum 1 oz Light Rum 1 oz Jamaican Rum 4 Dashes Cherry Brandy 4 Dashes of Papaya Juice 1/2 oz Lime Juice 1/2 oz 150-Proof Rum Pour all rums, brandies, papaya, and lime juices into a glass with cracked ice. Bain de Soleil darling. Hawaiian Tropic. Panama Jack with Dark Rum gimme some. It's a beach party on the sand at TRAX. Or we're on the back patio w/cactus juice at The Pyramid #RVA dreaming of TRAX. Dreaming big fat nasty beats you can bite into. Bubblelicious, a burst of flavor with every beat. Booty-shakin, earthquakin' church rafters raisin' organ pounding, dancing in the aisles and on the ISLE. Revelation. Sexy stuff.
It's a dark and heavy episode. We have two big, heavy Norwegian imperial stouts this episode. Amundsen Dessert in a Can Coffee Coconut and Caramel Macaroon is what it says on the can. Coffee, coconut and caramel macaroons give this a sweet, delicious imperial stout incredible flavor and keep it from being way too sweet. Lervig Off the Rack is their premium stout series and they rarely disappoint. Australia Dark Rum 2021 is a blend of imperial stout with chocolate, vanilla and caramel with another stout to balance it out. It's then aged on dark rum barrels for 12 months to create a unique experiece that you'll want more than one bottle of.
This episode originally aired March 4, 2019. It was the decade of “The Macarena,” the O.J. Simpson trial, the teen pop boom, VHS tapes, and Nintendo. It was also before 9/11 and Columbine, a time when the nation hung on every lurid detail of the president's sex life and the Tonya Harding-Nancy Kerrigan feud. Though 2000s nostalgia is on the way—as we discussed previously—it's hard to let go of our nostalgia for what looks like our last relatively innocent decade from here. Is there something extra special about the ‘90s? We discuss with guest host Sam Slaughter, author of the forthcoming Are You Afraid of the Dark Rum?: And Other Cocktails for ‘90s Kids.
