Today's episode is a guest episode, I sat down with Mpumi Mayisa to uncover her healing journey. This is one part of our conversation, the second part of this conversation will be released on Thursday this week. Mpumi Mayisa is a poet, photographer, podcaster, educational art program designer, and event curator based in Johannesburg, South Africa. She is passionate about using her gifts to advocate for human expansion and healing. Her background in education and event photography has given her insight into the seemingly small yet healthy social ingredients missing from the world she finds herself in. She has used these insights as seeds for inspiration to dream up the ideas, programs, and events that she executes in an effort to create new, rich realities that help nourish the seeds of creativity and self-healing. Since founding Among The Lilies in 2017, she has curated Ode To The Woman, Book Socials, and The Open Mic Experiment that provides artists with a platform to express their creative power, find or share their voices, collaborate, and learn to give themselves permission to breathe easy in their own bodies. Mpumi flowers open when she has a pen in the grip of her tiny fingers and enjoys the simple pleasure of stringing words together to form true to life and potent stories. She is currently working on her debut poetry collection. Thank you for being here. Listen to the 23rd edition of Free City Radio. On this edition we speak with Bulgarian writer and lecturer at Kent University, Veronika Stoyanova, who speaks about the post-1989 neoliberal economic policies that have been pushed on Bulgaria by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the ways that western backed pro business policies have been damaging for poor and working people in Bulgaria and the Balkans. Read Veronika's latest article on Jacobin here: https://jacobinmag.com/2020/11/bulgaria-capitalism-austerity-world-bank-imf Also on this edition we highlight voices from a community press event in Montreal to speak out against any austerity driven measures within the context of the pandemic that would impact poor and working people. With a growing federal deficit and increasing talk about cost cutting, these community voices came together to speak out against any cuts that impact the most vulnerable in the post-pandemic recovery. We hear from Dolores Chew from the South Asian Women's Community Centre, David Bleakney from the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) and Nakuset from the Native Women's Shelter in Montreal. “We become the stories we tell ourselves. So whatever story you're telling yourself is the story you recreate for yourself.” - Mpumi Nobiva This week we have the privilege of welcoming back Mpumi Nobiva. Our first NDINI interview with Mpumi was a little over 2 years ago. A lot has happened in her life since then, so she came back to give us an update.   When we last spoke to Mpumi, she was living her dream working for a prestigious company in Los Angeles, and living in a gorgeous high rise apartment.  She was on a plane almost every weekend travelling across the globe to speak on stages in front of thousands of people.  Mpumi talks about how she was so focused on being a “success” without realizing why I was so driven.   “Because I was so fixated on this idea of success, and because I was so driven, what I wasn't realizing is that the motivating force of my success was fear.” - Mpumi Nobiva But it all came at a very heavy price.  Mpumi opened up about the weight of success, and the toll it took on her mental health. She talks about the challenges of trying to reconcile the dream life she was living, with the very real poverty that her family was still living in.  She also talks about the ‘black tax' - the burden of being the one who “made it”, and the burden that brings with it.   “There's real weight when you encounter something. It impacts your energy level in such a real way I wish we knew how to express so that we can relieve ourselves from that.” - Mpumi Nobiva Mpumi talks about the weight of carrying other people's suffering, the feelings of guilt about her success, and the societal pressures.  At the peak of her success, Mpumi had a physical and mental breakdown.   “I needed to step away from all of this because I needed love. I needed to love myself.” - Mpumi Nobiva Mpumi realized she needed to time to heal, and to find her true self.  This included taking time away from social media, and to surround herself with real relationships and support. This included seeking help through therapy.  Therapy helped her start to understand more about herself, and the reasons behind her suffering.  This included what she came to know was generational unprocessed trauma. “Solitude means you're able to exist independently and be of your own independent essence and have your own stature... and that takes real work for an African girl who grew up not knowing how to love herself.” - Mpumi Nobiva Telling her story to the world has inspired many.  Mpumi's story is one of being born in poverty, a mother who sacrificed her life to provide for her family, being raised by her grandmother; and then being given the opportunity of a lifetime through The Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls.   Through hard work, determination, and to keep a promise she made to her grandmother, Mpumi has become an Award-Winning International Speaker and Communication Strategist. She has spoken at the White House, congressional fundraisers, corporate functions and nonprofit initiatives in several countries.  Mpumi is now on a new journey with a fresh perspective in her life.  She has always been very vocal in speaking about HIV/AIDS awareness, and has expanded her work to support other causes impacting women and children in South Africa. In particular she is choosing to focus on supporting mental wellness.  “We need to deconstruct what success means for the African. We need to deconstruct what religion is for the African. We need to deconstruct what spirituality is, what mental health is for the African.” - Mpumi Nobiva

The “BECOMING” series is inspired by Michelle Obama's memoir. In the memoir, Michelle gives us an honest and authentic account of her life unplugged. While I am of the view that we can all relate to Michelle's story, I thought it would be important to have a Becoming series where South African women share their stories. The aim is to give girls and women hope by sharing our unique stories and by opening up about our trauma's and successes. I hope this series will leave us all feeling inspired to be the best version of ourselves and will also empower us to make changes within our own lives so that we gain the confidence to change our homes, our communities and our country. On this episode I speak to Mpumi who gave us an honest account about her upbringing. She lets us in on how her father walked out on their family when she was just 9 months old and how her mom who only attended school until grade 5 struggled to raise her and her siblings. Mpumi also speaks about the challenges of being stuck in a career she knew was not meant for her and how she eventually managed to turn her situation around by answering to her God given purpose. Today Mpumi is the founder of the Purpose Practitioners Club and she is a Purpose Alignment Strategist - this is the title which has given her her power and made her the woman she is today. Tune in to hear her story. Mpumi's podcast can be found under “Purpose Practitioners Club” on all major podcast platforms.
