Hi everybody, my truly special Talk Music guest for this episode is ESTONIAN PIANIST KRISTJAN RANDALU, who exists among the most sought-after piano players of his generation, carrying the torch in both the improvised world of jazz and the traditional realm of classical music. Between creating his own original blend of contemporary jazz as a leader and collaborating with several generations of respected musicians, Randalu has brought his music to some of the world's most renowned jazz festivals and concert halls. The prestigious magazine Jazz Times describes Kristjan's playing as an “open invitation to an unnameable exotic land." At the same time, he is viewed as an esteemed interpreter of a broad spectrum of contemporary and classical music, performing alongside internationally acclaimed orchestras and conductors. We chat about how Kristjan was born in Estonia's capital Tallinn and how his family escaped Communist rule by relocating to Germany where he graduated from the Stuttgart Music University. Kristjan then went on to study at The Royal Academy of Music in London, followed by the Manhattan School of Music where he attained an additional master´s degree. We also delve into some of his most recent recordings including Sisu (awarded Jazz Album of the Year at the 2023 Estonian Music Awards) and Schumann's Dichterliebe (Berlin Classics, 2024) whereby Randalu has not only deepened his musical ties to the classical world, but presented a truly original recasting of one of the Romantic repertoire's cornerstones. We discuss his recordings with saxophonist Dave Liebman (Mussorgsky Pictures Revisited), Bodek Janke (Double Standard) and his album “Absence,” produced by Legendary owner of the ECM label, Manfred Eicher. Coming soon, his collaboration with Martin Kuuskmann (Schubert Voyage, release in March 2025 on Berlin Classics). Kristjan's list of musical partners include: Eivind Aarset, Mark Guiliana, Dieter llg, Marilyn Mazur, Nils Petter Molvaer, Claudio Puntin, Nguyen Le, Trygve Seim, Mathias Eick, Petros Klampanis, Dhafer Youssef, the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra, the New Chamber Orchestra of Berlin, the Tallinn Chamber Orchestra, the London Symphony, Dennis Russell Davies, Paavo Järvi, Kristjan Järvi and Maria Schneider. With a discography of over 50 albums under his belt (including a Grammy-nominated recording) and numerous awards to his name (including “Jazz Artist of the Year” and “Jazz Composer of the year” in Estonia), Randalu's prolific body of work continues to grow in breadth and quality. His unique voice is becoming internationally more and more important. This was for me a most interesting deep dive into an amazing musician and fellow Estonian! Whenever I can attend a performance you will always find me in the front row! Enjoy! Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

While still a teenager, he landed a gig at a Bay Area Black Baptist church. That introduced him not only to the world of improvising, but even more significantlhy, to the venerable Hammond organ and its Leslie speaker. As a four- year- old he began attending piano lessons at the Art School in Lucenec. During this period he has his first diploma in a regional piano competition. After moving with his family to Austria's Neusiedl am See in 2012, he started to study at the local music school. In a short period of time, he was selected among the top students in Burgenland, allowing him to participate regularly in master classes with the best pedagogues and performing artists. He has held several public concerts in the framework of Piano Academy Oberschützen. Since 2014 he has attended the Church Conservatory in Bratislava, where he was admitted as an extraordinary student to the class of Mgr.Art Andrea Balešová ArtD. The Third Story Podcast with Leo Sidran

Pianist-composer Vijay Iyer has been described by The New York Times as a “social conscience, multimedia collaborator, system builder, rhapsodist, historical thinker and multicultural gateway.” He has been praised by Pitchfork as “one of the best in the world at what he does,” by the Los Angeles Weekly as “a boundless and deeply important young star,” and by Minnesota Public Radio as “an American treasure.” He received a MacArthur Fellowship, a Doris Duke Performing Artist Award, a United States Artist Fellowship, a Grammy nomination, the Alpert Award in the Arts, and two German “Echo” awards, and was voted Downbeat Magazine's Jazz Artist of the Year four times in the last decade.  But beyond all that praise, he is at his core simply a seeker of genuine connection and community. Here he talks about growing up in Rochester, NY as one of a small handful of first generation Indian Americans (his parents immigrated), how he developed his musical identity alongside an academic career as a scientist (he did his undergraduate work in math and physics at Yale and holds a PHD from UC Berkeley in the cognitive science of music), creating work for an uncertain future, how to make music matter, and his most recent recordings.  He released Love In Exile - a collaborative album with Arooj Aftab and Shahzad Ismaily - last month on Verve Records.  www.third-story.com www.patreon.com/thirdstorypodcast www.wbgo.org/studios

Natasha Blaine is a Nashville-based singer and songwriter from Seattle, Washington. She blends roots in vocal jazz with soul, R&B, and pop music—citing great influence from artists like D'Angelo, Lianne La Havas, Amy Winehouse, and Emily King. Her songwriting, described as "direct, unfiltered and emotionally immediate,” buttery vocals, and energizing live shows have quickly caught the attention of the Nashville music scene. At six years old, Blaine started singing jazz. Her grandmother kept Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday records on repeat, teaching Blaine the words to old standards. And when she wouldn't stop singing them during kindergarten, her grandmother put her in voice lessons. Blaine picked up guitar at nine, sparking a love for songwriting before she even hit middle school. In 2018, while Blaine spent a few months studying literature in London, England, she made the decision to move from Seattle to Nashville, Tennessee. She wound up attending Vanderbilt University, getting a degree in literature and becoming the school's first vocal jazz student. In 2021, she became heavily involved in the famous Nashville writers' round circuit, writing songs and gigging at night.https://www.natashablaine.com/https://www.instagram.com/natashablaine/?hl=enhttps://www.facebook.com/natashablainemusic/Host - Trey Mitchelltreymitchellphotography IGfeeding_the_senses_unsensored on IGtrey mitchell: facebook.com/profile.php?id=100074368084848For sponsorship Information or submitting for interviews -  ftsunashville@gmail.comTheme Song - Damien HorneTake It From Me @damienhorne

Fiona Ross is one of those people that I keep coming back to. Fiona is very inspirational and very much a role model of what is truly the meaning of success as a creative artist. I spoke with her from her London home the night after her 5th new album launch gig. I could see from all the build-up to the event, and the buzz all over social media that this new (5th) album titled: "Red Flags and High Heels" was a resounding success even after just 24 hours!  Fiona explained her motivation for this 5th album concept, and how it was clearly a progressive linear timeline as is weaved throughout all her albums to date. We also talked about her founding "Women In Jazz Media" It's simply birth to continued exponential growth, now with 16 team members and a UK parliamentary award for Jazz Media Excellence, and the promoting of equal rights for women in the UK jazz industry.  I highly recommend you check out the consummate musicianship of Fiona and the other musicians on this wonderful album. The production is super professional quality for an album that is totally self-funded.
