Rap is huge in India and Desi hip-hop, the music and culture which combines the influences of hip-hop and the Indian subcontinent, is about to go global. Fan and champion Bobby Friction meets the leading artists on the scene as US rap legend Nas, begins a new hip-hop label in Mumbai. Nas has no doubt that the next global rap superstar will come from India but hip-hop culture is about more than shifting records. Rap is giving India's lower caste, religious minorities and women a space to speak truth to power and change the narrative around who can be a music star. Bobby speaks with Raja Kumari who was signed by Nas but is now stepping out on her own label Godmother Records with the intention of pushing female rappers in a male dominated scene. Prabh Deep is the Sikh class warrior and poet taking rap to new artistic levels from the grimiest parts of Delhi but also scoring hits with his take on life in India today. Prabh's label mate Ahmer is the politically conscious Muslim rapper from Kashmir who uses music to process the violence he has witnessed in the disputed territory. These rising stars alongside artists like KRSNA, Raftaar, Naezy and Divine are inspiring a new generation of hip-hop heads in Delhi, Mumbai and across India. Episode 44: Gully Boy brought the sounds of Mumbai's gullies to the big Bollywood screen. Episode 29 of the Khandaan podcast has arrived with 1991’s Dil Hai Ke Manta Nahin, starring Aamir Khan and Pooja Bhatt. Directed by Mahesh Bhatt, this remake of the beloved Hollywood classic It Happened One Night was a star vehicle for two enfant terribles of the age — Bhatt, who was setting Bollywood on fire with her unconventional antics, and Khan, who was tipped to be the next big thing. We also discuss two hot new releases: Shelley Chopra Dhar’s Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga, starring father-daughter duo Anil Kapoor and Sonam Kapoor along with Rajkumar Rao and Juhi Chawla. It is probably the most high profile LGBTQ film to have come out of the Hindi film industry in a while (not forgetting 2016’s Kapoor & Sons, which was a very different film). You can hear more about it [here](https://audioboom.com/posts/7172600-ep-237-love-is-love-dir-shelley-chopra-dhar-talks-ek-ladki-ko-dekha-to-aisa-laga) on the Upodcast interview with the director. The second new release we discuss is, of course, the movie that has fast become the talk of the town: Zoya Akhtar’s Gully Boy, starring Ranveer Singh, Alia Bhatt, Siddhant Chaturvedi, Vijay Raaz, and Kalki Koechlin. Based on the real life journey of street rappers Divine and Naezy, this movie is attracting almost universal love. Gully Boy is loosely based on the lives of real life rappers Naezy and DIVINE, who rose from slums to stardom. Hip hop, modern day protest music, which came out of the streets of New York, has inspired a flourishing music scene in Mumbai. But the beauty of Gully Boy is that even if you are entirely unfamiliar with this world, like I was, the film will still stir your soul.

In light of the upcoming release of Zoya Akhtar’s film, Gully Boy - inspired by the lives of rappers Divine & Naezy - we went back into our Maed in India archives to Mae’s beautifully revealing interview with rapper Naved Shaikh aka Naezy. Though he felt more comfortable conversing in Hindi and Mae’s awkward language skills clearly weren’t up to par, that didn’t hinder the poignant and powerful conversation that ensued. From a local lad living in a Kurla chawl to a high-flying rapper gigging across the country and working with some of the best producers in India, they chatted about a young man’s rise to fame and how he struggled to do what he loves regardless of his success. Hear his performance as he raps acapella on this episode too. In this podcast we discuss about the growing hip hop scene in India and it's impact on the overall Independent Music Scene in India. How the series of diss tracks released by Emiway and Raftaar and their battle of raps has changed the way people look at hiphop in India. We also discuss about the upcoming movie "Gully Boy" based on the life of 2 Indian rappers Naezy and Divine. Directed by Zoya Akhtar and starring Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt, if the footages of Ranveer Singh spending time with underground hiphop artists are to go by, we can guess that once the movie comes out, the scene is going to explode. Is it guaranteed? Listen to the full episode as I discuss my views on what to expect. From just a local lad living in a Kurla chawl to a high-flying rapper gigging across the country and working with some of the best producers in India. Naved Shaikh aka Naezy is our headliner on Maed in India this week as he talks about his debut album coming out this year and how doing what he loves is still a struggle for him regardless of his success. He also throws down some of his raps and new unreleased material from his upcoming record. The opening act for this episode is blues-soul singer-songwriter Naina Kundu, who features on next week's show. PS. For this interview, Naezy felt more comfortable chatting in Hindi with me, and currently, my own Hindi-speaking and Hindi-understanding skills are very much sub-par. I did try but you can tell that I was seriously struggling. Naezy was a sweetheart and phenomenally patient with me. I hope you too can please bare with me and the failings on my part. Though, one thing I will guarantee is that you will be entertained. Naina Kundu 'Peter Pan' Naezy 'Aafat!' 'Mere Gully Mein' 'Policewala' The Maed In India Podcast is also available on iTunes: https://goo.gl/mvFfLJ, Stitcher: https://goo.gl/Dc7iaV, Tunein: https://goo.gl/xw5liS, Or generally, just about any app you use to get your podcasts (Overcast, Beyond Pod) Follow Maed In India on: Facebook: facebook.com/maedinindia/ Twitter: twitter.com/maedinindia This is an IVM Production; for more such awesome podcasts, come find us: Website: Indusvox.com Facebook: https://goo.gl/P130uw Twitter: https://goo.gl/7P7Uec Instagram: https://goo.gl/qH3PH
