Lush Lata's Wild City mix moves from thumping kicks-backed Sarod meanderings of 'Maharaj Trio and Nickodemus' to the booming hip-hop beat of 'Go Again' by A-STAR to cuts by Overomono, SBTRKT, Romare, Breaka and Fred Again alongside works by homegrown talents like Oceantied, Potter and Stain, while also slipping in Udit Narayan, Kavita Krishnamurthy, Swarnalatha and Karsh Kale. With 40 tracks in less than an hour, the New Delhi selector's mixing moves quickly just like her trajectory as an artist. Starting as a member of the femme collective Coven Code and a staple figure of boxout.fm, Lush Lata has built her work over an embrace for Bollywood and the grooves most Indian kids grow up around while connecting it to her deep love for hip-hop and bass. The individual voice recently led her to be featured at Berlin's CTM Festival this year with a talk, DJ-ing workshop and a performance at the Panorama Bar of the dance music's most iconic club The Berghain. "I am way more open to new sounds and musical experiences than before. Also, they love what's going on in India right now," says Lush Lata, recounting her time in Berlin which she also does by ending her mix with Shy FX and T-Power's 'Shake Ur Body (feat. D.I.)', a track that she describes as "the tune that took my night at Berghain to another level when I heard it on the dancefloor in DJ Voilet's set at CTM festival." Brooklyn-based musician Max ZT has been called the “Hendrix of Hammered Dulcimer” and is widely regarded as one of the instrument's most prolific and innovative performers. In this episode, he joins Alex to explain the origin and design of the instrument, which he describes as the predecessor to the piano, and demystifies how to play it with some detailed examples. Max tells Alex about discovering the instrument at an early age, and the two discuss the importance of being present and judgment-free when playing. You'll also hear clips from the jam session that happened during the recording.Taking his roots from Irish and American folk music, Max has transplanted his compositional techniques to both Senegal, where he studied the Mandinko technique with the Cissoko griot family, and to India, where he received the prestigious American Institute of Indian Studies Fellowship grant to study under the world-renowned santoor master Pandit Shivkumar Sharma. His fresh perspective and bold experimentalism have been the backbone to beautiful, complex, and genuine compositions, while his unorthodox playing style has been a pioneering force in revolutionizing dulcimer techniques.Max ZT and his band House of Waters have been called “One of the most original bands on the planet,” by NY Music Daily, and have shared the stage with some of the most influential international musical leaders of the century including Pt. Whether he's melding hip-hop and jazz with legends like Masta Ace and Donny McCaslin, playing upright bass at the Newport Jazz Festival with Dred Scott Trio, remixing Karsh Kale or WuTang's Killah Priest, rockin' on electric bass with Marshall Crenshaw, or producing Peter Bernstein solo jazz guitar, Grammy-nominated producer/(re)mixer/bassist/composer Ben Rubin (aka Benny Cha Cha) is renowned for making records that are pure or genre-bending or both. Picked seven times as a “Rising Star Producer” in DownBeat Magazine's International Critics' Poll, Rubin has well over 100 album credits to his name. Lately, he has been working with a diversity of artists including Queen Esther, Erik Deutsch & Theo Bleckmann, Steve Conte (New York Dolls), Stripmall Ballads, Rachel Eckroth (St Vincent), Lower Power, Caleb Wheeler Curtis, Drifter feat. Lucy Woodward, Buzzed Armstrong, and Jon Irabagon, as well as labels like Ropeadope, Sunnyside and Imani. Most recently, Rubin's attention has focused on Analog Players Society at the Bridge Studio in Brooklyn with APS founder Amon Drum creating cut-up hip-hop instrumental records and jazz albums released on Ropeadope and described by Downbeat Magazine as “truly compelling.” featuring legendary Juice Crew MC Masta Ace described as “in the direct lineage of classics like A Tribe Called Quest's Low-End Theory, and Guru's Jazzmatazz.” Bens production and mixing credits include Walking Distance feat. Jason Moran, Grammy nominated composer/pianist Emilio Solla, and many recordings for Smalls Live Records releasing more than 30 records with jazz greats including Larry Goldings, Louis Hayes, Tom Harrell, Johnny O'Neal, Chris Potter, Tim Ries, Roy Hargrove, Mulgrew Miller, Seamus Blake, and Cyrille Aimeé to name just a few. As a bassist, Ben has toured and recorded both upright and electric bass with a diversity of artists, including Dred Scott Trio, Patti Smith, James Maddock, Courtney Love, Mary J. Blige, Moby, Bill Frisell, and his own acclaimed, genre-bending band Mudville which I believe my brother Nate played in at one point. Ben has also composed scores for features and short films, including director Nelson Kim's feature film debut, Someone Else, which premiered at the Miami International Film Festival in 2015. Stir Crazy With Steve Jenkins: Conversations With Creatives During The Quarantine

My guest today is the great guitarist/instructor Chris Buono. I met Chris in 2003 through our mutual friend David Fiuczynski while doing a thing at Berklee College of Music. Chris and I have played music together a lot - a good bit of that music has been with the great drummer Tobias Ralph. I've also played bass on many of Chris’s TrueFire courses including an in-depth interactive course along with Keith Carlock called In The Jam: NYC Funk.In addition to being a kick ass guitar player who’s played with people like Dweezil Zappa, Bumblefoot, Graham Haynes, Karsh Kale, Snarky Puppy, etc., Chris is one helluva guitar instructor. Former students include Bob Lanzetti, Rob Compa, Ben Levin, Aurelien Budynek and Harvey Valdes to name a few. He has over 40 courses through TrueFire, he’s been a contributing writer for Guitar One, Just Jazz Guitar and currently Guitar Player magazine and makes instructional content for Guitarinstructor.com. Chris was also a member of the Guitar Department at Berklee College of Music for a time and has several books published by Alfred & Hal Leonard. We had a great chat back in June where our conversation begins talking about the new challenges in hustling brought on by this pandemic. Be sure to stick around at the end for our thoughts on our mutual hero, Eddie Van Halen.

Indian American musician Sheela Bringi has been exploring the connections between her ancestral and actual homelands her entire life. The singer and instrumentalist plays the harp, harmonium and bansuri (Indian classical bamboo flute). As a young woman Bringi was influenced by M.I.A. and Dead Can Dance, studied with Cecil Taylor and Meredith Monk, while at the same time deepened her studies with Indian classical masters like Pandit G.S. Sachdev and Ustaad Aashish Khan. This unique background has resulted in her debut album, Incantations (Black Swan Sounds), rooted in India’s classical music tradition and the beauty of its mantras, as well as a groundbreaking exploration of American jazz and blues. The album was released in 2014 and garnered praise from National Public Radio, the Guardian, Public Radio International and more, and debuted at #9 on the iTunes World Music chart. She has performed in a wide range of venues, including concert halls and universities presenting traditional material, yoga studios leading kirtans and in dance clubs overtop throbbing, bass-heavy beats (she’s toured with Karsh Kale, DJ Drez, and many others). In 2016 she was an instrumental soloist on Madi Das’ GRAMMY-nominated album, Bhakti Without Borders. shebrings.com eastforest.org

He's been in bands such as Zero, Alien Chutney, Helga's Fun Castle, and performed with the likes of Karsh Kale, Ankur & The Ghalat Family, Tejas Menon and more. In this episode we try to understand what inspires Warren's music, his years in Auckland before he came back to India, his most recent record - The Universe Has A Strange Sense of Humour, using chaddies as a pop-filter, and refrigerating a overheated computer while producing an album. We also have Warren interrupting his own performances in the studio to explain his songs. Also on the lineup is indie folk singer-songwriter Jishnu Guha aka Short Round, who released his debut EP Desperate Times recently, and came to the studio to perform on Maed in India. One of India's longest running and most prolific stage names; Gaurav Raina - as one half of the Midival Punditz - is a familiar name for music lovers and peers alike. In a step in a new direction, his solo project 'GRAIN', showcases a musician within a musician. Sonic textures that are deeper, darker – even melancholic – zigzagging through genres with confidence. In our eyes, some of his most technically adept and exciting output thus far. ‘Grey to Silver’ is GRAIN’s debut LP out this month via Times Music. Featuring collaborations with the likes of Karsh Kale, Monica Dogra, Anoushka Shankar, Ankur Tewari, Brooklyn Shanti and Talia Bentson - it doesn’t disappoint. Like something created by any of the worlds longest standing producers, Grey To Silver will want you to pat yourself on the back for sticking with it. It's beautiful, ugly and also a little bit weird. And in that vain so is his Wild City mix. In an unexpected turn from the producer it includes tracks from acts such as The Bug, Darkside, Atoms For Peace and Zola Jesus. One more of these forms of output that reveals more and more about its creator over time. An inspiring example of how, free of pressure, Raina has blossomed into something definite, yet at his own pace.
