Welcome back to America's leading higher education podcast! This is The EdUp Experience President Series Episode #75. In this episode, sponsored by MDT Marketing, we welcome Dr. Kenya Ayers-Palmore, President, Tarrant County College! Keyna talks about literally changing the life trajectory for students and their families in one of the largest community college systems in the country. She discusses paying attention to and scaling the opportunity for women of color to ascend to greater roles in higher ed. Kenya also talks about the value of higher education and, specifically, the economic impact of community colleges and their impact on the national stage. She also talks about what higher ed can learn from Carvana - you don't want to miss this! Prior to assuming the presidency with TCC, Dr. Ayers served for three years as Vice President and Chair of the Board for the Northwest Educational Council for Student Success (NECSS). NECSS is a partnership organization which unifies William Rainey Harper College and its three feeder school districts (D211, D214 and D220) in Chicago's northwest suburbs. As chief executive officer of NECSS, Ayers helmed many cutting edge initiatives that were instrumental in Harper's accomplishments in the area of student success for the K-14 pipeline. Harper College is winner of the 2016 Leah Meyer Austin Award and a 2017 Aspen Prize eligible institution. Ayers has managed multi-million dollar budgetary resources and has led multiple institutional initiatives responsible for forward momentum and sustainable transformation. Ayers was featured on the cover of the June/July 2016 edition of the Community College Journal in an article, “The Mentorship of Kenya Ayers.” Another episode sponsored by our great friends at MDT Marketing! George Hrab is the drummer for the Philadelphia Funk Authority, and has been performing live since kindergarten! He's performed as a solo artist for years, writes amazing original music, hosts his own entertaining live streams, acts as a wonder master of ceremonies for events/conferences, and hosts the incredible and well-established Geologic podcast (which has nothing to do with Geology). George is periodically involved in endeavors of the popular Skeptics Guide to the Universe podcast and their other activities, filling the role of MC for their touring live show The Skeptical Extravaganza and their recent 100% digital/online NECSS conference in 2020.His social links:george@georgehrab.comwww.GeorgeHrab.comwww.geologicpodcast.com/
It's the annual live Rationally Speaking episode, taped at the Northeast Conference on Science and Skepticism in NYC! This year features returning guest Jacob Appel, a bioethicist (and lawyer, and psychiatrist). Jacob and Julia discuss various bioethical dilemmas, such as: How do you handle parents who want to withhold medical treatment from their child for religious reasons? Is it unethical for American doctors to test new medications in the third-world? And what kinds of principles does a bioethicist use to justify their decisions, beyond "that's just my personal opinion"? Sped up the speakers by ['1.0', '1.17']
Julia invites philosopher and blogger Dan Fincke onto the show, inspired by a productive disagreement they had on Facebook. Their topic in this episode: civility in public discourse. Do atheists and skeptics have a responsibility to be civil when expressing disagreement, and does that responsibility vary depending on who their target is? Is there a legitimate role for offensive satire? And might there be downsides to civility? Dan and Julia also revisit the subject of their original disagreement: the recent NECSS decision to rescind Richard Dawkins' speaking invitation, on account of a video he tweeted which compared feminists to Islamists. Dan and Julia attempt to put the Dawkins case study in the broader context of the civility debate, asking questions like: What makes something offensive, and can someone be *unjustifiably* offended? Sped up the speakers by ['1.06', '1.0']
This live episode of Rationally Speaking, taped at the 2015 Northeast Conference on Science and Skepticism, is a special one: it's Massimo's last episode as co-host! He and Julia look back over their history together and discuss which topics they've changed their mind about since the podcast began. Sped up the speakers by ['1.08', '1.0']
Rationally Speaking returns to NECSS for a live show with Lawrence Krauss, theoretical physicist and author of best selling books like The Physics of Star Trek and A Universe from Nothing. Julia and Massimo chat with Lawrence about whether the laws of the universe demand some kind of explanation, whether string theory should be deemed a failure, and how he ended up featured in a geocentrist documentary. Sped up the speakers by ['1.14', '1.0']
Ian Callanan is an audio and livestream engineer for the amazing podcast The Skeptics Guide to the Universe. He handles the technical details behind their touring live show The Skeptical Extravaganza, their recent 100% online NECSS conference done via Crowdcast.io, and he's the man behind the curtain of the show's weekly Facebook live streams. He also edits the raw podcast audio for Cognitive Dissonance into a polished final product. Finally, since he clearly has too much spare time, he recently started a streaming channel on Twitch.
In a special live Rationally Speaking, taped at NECSS 2013, Julia Galef moderates a lively discussion between Massimo and Michael Shermer, head of the Skeptic Society and founding publisher of Skeptic Magazine. The topic: Can science tell us what is "moral"? This discussion comes after both men have tackled the question separately in books (Massimo's Answers for Aristotle and Michael's The Science of Good and Evil), and jointly in a recent debate on the Rationally Speaking blog. Questions under debate include: Does "natural" = "morally right"? How do we make tradeoffs between different people's happiness? And what role should science and philosophy play in making these decisions? Sped up the speakers by ['1.0', '1.17']
Why does the universe exist? And is that even a sensical question to ask? Philosopher Jim Holt has written extensively for publications such as the New Yorker, the New York Times and Harper's, and most recently embarked on this "existential detective story" in his new book, "Why Does the World Exist?: An Existential Detective Story" Jim discusses his book with Massimo and Julia in this live episode of Rationally Speaking, taped at the 2013 Northeast Conference on Science and Skepticism in New York City. Sped up the speakers by ['1.0', '1.13']
In this special live episode recorded at the 2012 Northeast Conference on Science and Skepticism, Massimo and Julia discuss the "simulation argument" -- the case that it's roughly 20% likely that we live in a computer simulation -- and the surprising implications that argument has for religion. Their guest is philosopher David Kyle Johnson, who is professor of philosophy at King's College and author of the blog "Plato on Pop" for Psychology Today, and who hosts his own podcast at philosophyandpopculture.com. Elaborating on an article he recently published in the journal Philo, Johnson lays out the simulation argument and his own insight into how it might solve the age-old Problem of Evil (i.e., "How is it possible that an all-powerful, all-knowing, and good God could allow evil to occur in the world?"). As usual, Massimo and Julia have plenty of questions and comments! Sped up the speakers by ['1.1', '1.0']
In this one hour episode, recorded live at the 2011 Northeast Conference on Science and Skepticism, Massimo and Julia discuss bioethics with two special guests: Jacob Appel, doctor, author, lawyer and bioethicist; and Jennifer Michael Hecht, poet and historian of science. Topics covered included: Should parents be allowed to select the gender and sexual orientation of their babies? Should pharmacists and physicians be allowed to refuse to provide treatments that violate their own religious or ethical principles? And when is assisted suicide acceptable? Sped up the speakers by [1.0, 1.1614802354920102]

This week we first chat about some of the great current skeptical online events, like NECSS and Skeptics in the Pub. We also enjoy the good news that the worlds largest fusion reactor is now being assembled in the South of France. In this week in history we learn about “Lysenkoism” which Stalin decided should replace all other science. In current affairs Pope Francis has issues with Chinese infiltrators and French women who demands to be bishops. In this week's news: - What's the truth about face masks and covid-19? - What lies behind conspiracy theories - Misleading claims on pre-existing conditions and Covid-19 deaths go viral - Hungarian company selling bogus 'pro-insulin c-peptide' product banned from advertising - COVID conspiracy theories skyrocket in Romania and number of cases increase - Use of so-called alternative medicine (SCAM) by French cancer patients - Update - Retraction Watch gets a response from editor-in-chief of journal that published worst paper of 2020 - Chronic back pain and spinal manipulation - is it a good treatment? - Stonehenge's long-lived mystery solved The prize for being Really Wrong goes to all the German demonstrators that marched in Berlin last weekend, spreading crazy ideas and endangering the public and themselves. I'm getting a very Groundhog day "already written these show notes" vibe. I guess they didn't go well last time or something, so hopefully this time around will be better. We're joined by an amazing guest, the award eligible Tom from Cog Dis, to discuss Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, a movie we all really enjoyed and had largely forgotten. There's a lot to cover so we space it over two episodes, the first one dealing with grief more broadly and the second one incorporating Nietzsche's take on eternal recurrence. Mostly it's a lot of Tom saying clever things and then Thomas saying "seeee!" and glaring at me. Sooooo, we introduced someone new into the podcast this week and things got...weird...We're joined by Heath of the PiaT crowd to discuss episode one of Black Mirror's new season. The BM episode is called Striking Vipers, but it really should have been called Mauling Bears. Lotta ursine erotica is what I'm saying. We also squeeze in a little bit of philosophy on the multifaceted nature of identity and how virtual worlds change what is possible and what feels so so right. I think it's fair to say we're willing to go much farther on this issue than Black Mirror was, so if you were also left wanting more, this might help. I built a superintelligent robot to write these show notes, and it just kept repeating the word "meta" over and over and over again. Not sure if it's a feature or a bug. While we sort it out, enjoy our episode on Asimov's The Evitable conflict, where he first describes The Zeroth Law of robotics. We explain the law, the problems it faces, and how they connect to issues like virtue theory and questions about god. Ugh, woe is me. I used to find passion in the challenge of writing these show notes, but now that I've mastered the art of meta show notes-fu, there's no challenge left. I must seek out a show now with content so boring and straightforward that no amount of meta show notes will make it palatable. This is my hero's journey. Also, we're doing One Punch Man and discussing the tension between wanting to reach our goals easily and enjoying the challenges of the journey itself, and lots of other fun related topics. After such a meta conversation like this about the intricate relationship of media and information, it's really hard to do a meta writeup without going double meta, so here we are. Some episodes we're very much on the same page, and in many places (partly cause of internet issues) we were not in this episode. And I think that's great! There's a lot of moving parts here and it's hard to slow them all down and I think it's good to see how that process goes. No prepackaged bite sized material here, just a lot of gristle to chew on. Hello [primary user] and welcome to the show notes for your brand new copy of our episode about Humans, a British show about how awkward it will be when we're all surrounded by vastly superior, extremely polite robits. We hope you will find this show to be...suitable. If you find it sup bar, and can overcome the British urge to never voice that feeling, do let us know. And of course, if you want to experience the adult package, nudge nudge wink wink: Support us at Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/0G Follow us on Twitter: https://twitter.com/0gPhilosophy Join our Facebook discussion group (make sure to answer the questions to join): https://www.facebook.com/groups/985828008244018/ Email us at: philosophersinspace@gmail.com Sibling shows: Serious Inquiries Only: https://seriouspod.com/ Opening Arguments: https://openargs.com/ Embrace the Void: https://voidpod.com/ Cognitive Dissonance: http://dissonancepod.com/ Recent appearances: Aaron's going to be on an upcoming episode of Podunk Polymath, but the hunger is endless. Aaron is also going to be on a panel at NECSS this summer in NYC discussing mutant ethics. Come do some nerdcore philosophy! CONTENT PREVIEW: Continuing our streak of shows with amazing female protagonists, we're going to look at Orphan Black and discuss human cloning, experimentation, and nature vs. nurture, and Aaron will resist the urge to say "luck" for as long as possible.
"Now I do not know whether I was then a man dreaming I was a pool cleaning robot, or whether I am now a pool cleaning robot, dreaming I am a man." -RoboZhuangzi This week we're discussing the Canadian Classic, Cube! This movie really exemplifies the concept of "kafkaesque", and we're joined by the amazing Cecil of Cognitive dissonance to unpack this tricky concept. We also dive into the idea of social conditioning as its own kind of prison, and the cosmic horror of there being no "them" behind it all. It gets a little voidy, not gonna lie. That's a weird feeling and we're not super into it, so help us out and find us some fun places to talk fun things! Aaron is also going to be on a panel at NECSS this summer in NYC discussing mutant ethics. Come do some nerdcore philosophy! CONTENT PREVIEW: We're gonna put another show on the jenga tower of suggestions we keep making and talk about the show Humans and how it does an amazing job getting into the ethical realities of realistic AI entities in our everyday lives. We won't spoil anything beyond the first episode but good luck not getting hooked.

Here is the "official" way to look up your Federal Representatives from USA.gov www.usa.gov/Contact/Elected.shtml it is however kind of klunky. After a small amount of searching I found this site to be more user friendly. http://whoismyrepresentative.com/ although I won't take responsibility for the ads on the site. You can follow this story, and download the actual FDA documents related to Stanislaw Burzynski at http://thehoustoncancerquack.com/ read up more on the the Burzynski Clinic on wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burzynski_Clinic Other blogs and sites to follow for this story include: The OTHER Burzynski Patient Group at http://theotherburzynskipatientgroup.wordpress.com/ Science Based Medicine http://www.sciencebasedmedicine.org/?s=Stanislaw+Burzynski Orac, an actual oncologist as opposed to Burzynski who is not, writes at Respectful Insolence http://scienceblogs.com/insolence/?s=burzynski You can follow Bob Blaskiewicz on twitter @rjblaskiewicz and catch him on the virtual skeptics at http://virtualskeptics.com/ (It's like Meet the Press, but with Skeptics!) My introduction of Bob was completely lifted from the NECSS speaker bio, and I take no credit for how well it was worded. http://necss.org/speakers/bob-blaskiewicz/ For more information on NECSS check out their website http://necss.org/ Intro and bumper music is provided by Obsidian Shell, find them in iTunes or head over to http://www.obsidianshell.com/ Closing music provided by The Small Wonder Experience.
