With so much discussion about the eventual retirement of the International Space Station, a lot of attention is being paid to companies developing private space stations … and there are several. A new entrant in that arena is Joules Space Technology, LLC, an aerospace research and development company focused on making space more human-friendly. They specialize in artificial gravity and are developing a space station called Space Station EO. On this edition of The Ex Terra Podcast, Tom Patton talks with Jules Ross, founder and CEO of Joules Space Technology, which is developing the concept of an artificial gravity space station. The company hopes to be the first aerospace company to conquer NASA's five hazards of human spaceflight - Space Radiation, Isolation, Distance from Earth, Gravity Field, and Hostile/Closed Environment. Space Station EO ... for Earth One ... would solve those problems with private living quarters, an electromagnetic radiation shield, Earth simulation technology to give astronauts more of a feeling of home, and be a self-sustaining dual gravity platform for science and more. "Our platform has both environments on one platform. It has 1G and 0G. So now we can do our experiments in 1G and then do backup experiments in 0G, or vice versa," Ross said. "So the scientists and the experiment can be on the space station at the same time." Ross envisions a future where people of ordinary means can experience space in a safe and comfortable environment, and Space Station EO could be the first step in making that vision a reality.

J., Mulavara, A. P., Seidler, R. D. Abstract: Spaceflight has numerous untoward effects on human physiology. Various countermeasures are under investigation including artificial gravity (AG). Here, we investigated whether AG alters resting-state brain functional connectivity changes during head-down tilt bed rest (HDBR), a spaceflight analog. Participants underwent 60 days of HDBR. Two groups received daily AG administered either continuously (cAG) or intermittently (iAG). A control group received no AG. We assessed resting-state functional connectivity before, during, and after HDBR. We also measured balance and mobility changes from pre- to post-HDBR. We examined how functional connectivity changes throughout HDBR and whether AG is associated with differential effects. We found differential connectivity changes by group between posterior parietal cortex and multiple somatosensory regions. The control group exhibited increased functional connectivity between these regions throughout HDBR whereas the cAG group showed decreased functional connectivity. This finding suggests that AG alters somatosensory reweighting during HDBR. We also observed brain-behavioral correlations that differed significantly by group. Control group participants who showed increased connectivity between the putamen and somatosensory cortex exhibited greater mobility declines post-HDBR. For the cAG group, increased connectivity between these regions was associated with little to no mobility declines post-HDBR. This suggests that when somatosensory stimulation is provided via AG, functional connectivity increases between the putamen and somatosensory cortex are compensatory in nature, resulting in reduced mobility declines. Given these findings, AG may be an effective countermeasure for the reduced somatosensory stimulation that occurs in both microgravity and HDBR. Copy rights belong to original authors. Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2022.10.27.514043v1?rss=1 Authors: Tays, G., Hupfeld, K., McGregor, H., Beltran, N., Kofman, I., DeDios, Y., Mulder, E., Bloomberg, J., Mulavara, A., Wood, S., Seidler, R. Abstract: Altered vestibular signaling and body unloading in microgravity results in sensory reweighting and adaptation. Microgravity effects are well-replicated in head-down tilt bed rest (HDBR). Artificial gravity (AG) is a potential countermeasure to mitigate effects of microgravity. We examined the effectiveness of daily AG for mitigating brain and/or behavioral changes in 60 days of HDBR. One group received AG for 30 minutes daily (AG; n=16) and a control group spent the same time in HDBR but received no AG (CTRL; n=8). All participants performed a sensorimotor adaptation task 5 times during fMRI scanning: twice prior to HDBR twice during HDBR, and once following HDBR. The AG group showed similar behavioral adaptation effects compared with the CTRLs. We identified decreased brain activation in the AG group from pre to late HDBR in the cerebellum for the task baseline portion and in the thalamus, calcarine, cuneus, premotor cortices, and superior frontal gyrus in the AG group during the early adaptation phase. The two groups also exhibited differential brain-behavior correlations. Together, these results suggest that AG may result in a reduced recruitment of brain activity for basic motor processes and sensorimotor adaptation. These effects may stem from somatosensory and vestibular stimulation from AG. Copy rights belong to original authors. Visit the link for more info Podcast created by Paper Player, LLC

We start off explaining why the Newtonian Laws of gravity (which is what you learn in school) is not always right and in fact wrong most of the time for very large masses which is where Einstein's theories of relativity come in and works for all applications until recently where their could be evidence in dark matter that may prove it wrong. Moving on from gravity we talk about artificial gravity in the second half of the podcast, namely spin gravity and 1g rocket gravity which are amazing concepts and have been used before in space and on Earth before! The most interesting part is that you would be feeling gravity in the midst of space without a planet's mass underneath your feet. As a fan of science fiction and science, I have to say that The Expanse has a bunch of great science. It's not just the science in the show. The characters also seem to demonstrate an understanding of physics. One scene from the first season stands out in particular as a classic physics example. I guess I should give a spoiler alert, but I'm not really giving away any major plot elements. But you have been warned. OK, since you are still here let me describe the scene.

If we want to live and work in space for long periods of time, we’ll need to conquer the lack of gravity and its effects on the human body. We’ll want to come up with some kind of artificial gravity. Futurists imagine huge rotating space stations, but realistically there are strategies that could provide artificial gravity for the times that we need it, and allow us to survive in space forever.
