“L'Elisir d'Amore” — “The Elixir of Love” — is what's known as an opera buffa, or comic opera. That means that we're in for a happy ending.But Donizetti knows that the payoff is only earned through the suffering of his protagonists. In one pivotal moment, our hero Nemorino glimpses his beloved shedding a single tear — and he concludes (crazily, but correctly) that it can only mean that she loves him back. The aria Nemorino delivers here — one of the most famous in the history of opera — expresses the singular moment when the agony of unrequited love shifts to the certainty of a blissful future.In this episode, host Rhiannon Giddens and her guests unpack the potential for heartbreak that lies within every happy ending and why Donizetti might be one of the most underrated opera composers. Donizetti's ebullient bel canto comedy, L'elisir d'amore, is rightfully one of the jewels in the canon with its amusing story, gorgeous melodies that come one after another, and one of the great operatic characters at its center, Nemorino. We'll celebrate this opera by talking with sommelier Massimo Maietto (@6:25) about wine and which wines he would suggest as a love potion. A smile full of sunshine comes to Seattle Opera with the return of Donizetti's endearing comedy. The story of The Elixir of Love concerns the adventures of a bottle of Bordeaux; but the music is as sweet and gentle as the lightest possible tiramisù. Seattle Opera Dramaturg Jonathan Dean introduces The Elixir of Love, with musical examples from Seattle Opera's 1998 archival recording, starring Rafael Rojas and Vinson Cole as Nemorino, Jane Giering-De Haan as Adina, Jason Howard as Belcore, and Julian Patrick as Dr. Dulcamara. John DeMain conducted the chorus and orchestra of Seattle Opera.

This episode of Opera for Everyone features Luciano Pavarotti as Nemorino and Kathleen Battle as Adina in a 1990 Metropolitan Opera production of Gaetano Donizetti's L'Elisir D'Amore conducted by James Levine. This "Opera Buffa" - comedic opera - premiered in 1832 at Teatro Cannobiana, in Milan. The opera in two acts with a libretto by Felice Romani, is set in a small village in the Italian countryside. The story focuses on a romance between the beautiful young Adina, and Nemorino a shy and insecure man who works on her land. L'Elisir D'Amore is considered to represent the best of the bel canto tradition that reigned in Italian opera in the early 19th century The show-stopping tenor aria “Una furtiva lagrima” in Act II is a favorite aria for many opera lovers.
