I have been reminded over and over again in recent weeks of the preciousness of life as numerous dear friends and family members face loss of loved ones and their own life-altering health crises. This got me to thinking about how much my mentors have shaped my life. So with this latest episode I inaugurate a new Countermelody series entitled “Honor Your Mentors.” I have already posted numerous times on the podcast about my beloved teacher John Wustman. This coming July my friend and colleague Chanda VanderHart's monumental book Accompaniment in America: Contextualizing Collaborative Piano, co-authored with Kathleen Kelly and Elvia Puccinelli, will be published by Routledge. Chanda has put together an astonishing digital archive featuring a wealth of material related to the book: https://accompanimentinamerica.website/index.html Included in this material is an interview I did with Chanda about Mr. Wustman. Chanda has given me permission to include that interview on my podcast. This is supplemented by a sampling of (mostly) studio recordings of John featuring, among others, Régine Crespin, Carlo Bergonzi, Brigitte Fassbaender, Luciano Pavarotti, and Irina Arkhipova: truly an astonishing feast for the ears! Additionally, I was enormously saddened last week to read of the death of Joan Caplan, my first serious voice teacher in New York, and a phenomenal singer in her own right. Joan also remained a close friend through the years. In recent years she had been living at the Actors Fund Home in Englewood, New Jersey. I was able to visit her there last summer and had intended to go see her again later this month. Alas, that can no longer happen, but I will also be featuring Joan in an upcoming episode in the “Honor Your Mentors” series. In her memory today, I present her in a scintillating recording of Orsini's Brindisi from Donizetti's Lucrezia Borgia. Finally, though I'm sure no one needs to be reminded of this, please, my dears, tell all those you love how much they mean to you; don't wait until their funerals to give them their flowers! Countermelody is a podcast devoted to the glory and the power of the human voice raised in song. Singer and vocal aficionado Daniel Gundlach explores great singers of the past and present focusing in particular on those who are less well-remembered today than they should be. Daniel's lifetime in music as a professional countertenor, pianist, vocal coach, voice teacher, and journalist yields an exciting array of anecdotes, impressions, and “inside stories.” At Countermelody's core is the celebration of great singers of all stripes, their instruments, and the connection they make to the words they sing. By clicking on the following link (https://linktr.ee/CountermelodyPodcast) you can find the dedicated Countermelody website which contains additional content including artist photos and episode setlists. Le nom de Donizetti n'arrive qu'après celui de Rossini et Bellini pour illustrer le bel canto romantique ; il a été pourtant le plus prolifique des trois, puisqu'on lui doit pas moins de 70 opéras. Today on Countermelody is the first of two memorial episodes paying tribute to singers that we've lost just in the past few months. Applying the completely arbitrary rubric of gender, today I am focusing on sopranos (with two mezzo-soprano interlopers); my next episode will carry the memorial torch for all the male singers who've recently died. Today's subjects ranged in age from only 35 to nearly 102 at the time of their deaths, and from Broadway star to early music singer: Jodie Devos, April Cantelo, Lucine Amara, Celestina Casapietra, Christine Weidinger, Elena Mauti Nunziata, Deborah Roberts, and Sanda Şandru; lower-voiced interlopers include Janis Paige, Margaret Cable, and Ruth Hesse. If you know some of these names, you know that you will be some mellifluous serenading; if you don't, prepare yourself for a wide range of music from Renaissance polyphony to American pop standards, with operatic selections ranging from Donizetti to Falla. Countermelody is a podcast devoted to the glory and the power of the human voice raised in song. Singer and vocal aficionado Daniel Gundlach explores great singers of the past and present focusing in particular on those who are less well-remembered today than they should be. On Monday June 3, 2024, a new memorial plaque commemorating African American mezzo-soprano Vera Little (10 December 1928 – 24 October 2012) was unveiled at her former residence in Berlin's Charlottenburg neighborhood. Little is remembered today as the first Black singer to appear as Carmen on the stage of Berlin's Städtische Oper, soon to be renamed the Deutsche Oper Berlin. At the time of that appearance there were cries and protests about her hiring instead of an “equally capable” German singer. And yet, when Little returned to the stage of the Deutsche Oper in 1963, now singing the role of Amneris, she became one of the central singers in the ensemble of that company, being named a Kammersängerin there in 1970. This episode examines the life and career of Vera Little, from her birth in Memphis through her decades-long residence in Berlin. It is a fascinating, circuitous path, and one which is documented only sporadically on recording. On this episode, I play excerpts from Little's only solo recording, a 1957 Decca records release of spirituals recorded in France, as well as her recordings on Deutsche Grammophon of Der junge Lord by Hans Werner Henze, and Richard Strauss's Daphne. In addition, there are live recordings of Little singing Baba the Turk in Stravinsky's The Rake's Progress, Giovanna Seymour in Donizetti's Anna Bolena, and Beroe in Henze's Die Bassariden, which Little created in its 1966 world premiere at the Salzburg Festival. Vera Little was also an author, who published four books of memoir and poetry, and just yesterday I obtained a copy of her first book, 1978's Tears in My Eyes, from which I read a number of excerpts. I had known Little's name for decades, but had never fully explored her legacy before. It is here (and on an accompanying bonus episode) my honor and privilege to present a great (and somewhat forgotten) artist for your delectation. Today's vocal guest stars include Kostas Paskalis, Hilde Güden, Anneliese Rothenberger, and Teresa Żylis-Gara. Opera UCT is going to be the first opera company in the world to present a fully staged performance of a lost opera by Donizetti, Dalinda. The score was only discovered in 2019 and has been meticulously reconstructed As my guest on People of Note this week, the conductor Jeremy Silver will explain. Jeremy is globally recognised for conducting lesser-known Donizetti masterpieces and he was especially selected by Opera Co-Pro to bring the full opera to life in a world premier right here in Cape Town.
How can it even be that our beloved Janet Baker is turning 91 today? I have been so moved by all the tributes pouring in and I feel compelled to add my humble wishes to all the others. Last year while perusing the bins at Academy Records in New York, I came across an obscure live LP of Janet Baker that made me gasp in surprise and delight: her New York song recital debut at Town Hall on December 2, 1966, which featured works of Mozart, Schubert, Fauré, Duparc, and Berlioz, all composers central to her repertoire. This appearance was the capstone of her first New York season, which had already included a performance with the Melos Ensemble of vocal chamber music at Hunter College; concert performances of Smeton in Donizetti's Anna Bolena (which starred in the title role the flaming Greek comet Elena Souliotis), and the title role in Handel's Serse. At the end of her first New York season came this, her first full Liederabend in New York City. Janet Baker is heard in her youthful prime and reveals herself, not at all surprisingly to those who had already begun collecting her early commercial recordings, to be a singer touched by the divine fire. The recording also serves as a sound document of the exceptional artistic partnership between Baker and the pianist Martin Isepp (who was also the son of her voice teacher Helena Isepp, who was also the teacher of Heather Harper, whom we heard last week on her own Countermelody episode). Today's episode was originally released a year ago for my Patreon supporters, and, because this recital has never received as wide a release as some of Baker's other live concerts, it is a particular hono(u)r and joy to present it to you today as we celebrate her 91 years on this earth.

DescriptionDonizetti: One of Opera's Brightest Stars in 60 Seconds. Take a minute to get the scoop!Fun FactGaetano Donizetti's first opera, "Il Pigmalione," was composed in 1816 when he was only 19 years old. This one-act opera, based on the myth of Pygmalion, showcases his early talent and promise as a composer. Though not as famous as his later works, "Il Pigmalione" is notable for its lyrical melodies and set the stage for Donizetti's prolific career in opera, including masterpieces like "Lucia di Lammermoor" and "L'elisir d'amore."__________________________________________________________________About Steven, HostSteven is a Canadian composer & actor living in Toronto. An unscrupulous king pressures a woman to marry him. She resists, knowing her heart belongs to the man who truly loves her, the chief general in the king's army. Into this love-triangle, toss in a scheming underling of the king, a sympathetic maid of the woman, a devoted best friend of the general, and you have all the ingredients for a gripping story. Enhance the whole tale with a magnificent score, and you have a delightful opera, and, in fact, the first fully successful opera by the most prolific composer of the Bel Canto style, Gaetano Donizetti. Though Donizetti composed 70 operas, only a small number of those are regularly staged these days. We invite you to meet Zoraida di Granata, and enjoy an early work from a beloved composer. Hosted by Pat and Janet

Giuseppe Donizetti'nin İstanbul'a gelişi, II. Mahmut devrinde yenilikler ve müzik alanında değişimler...
SynopsisOn today's date in 1840, a new opera by Gaetano Donizetti debuted at the Opéra Comique in Paris. This was La Fille du Régiment, or The Daughter of the Regiment. Other operas by the popular Italian composer were already playing in Paris, and others were scheduled. Despite being tailor-made to Parisian tastes, The Daughter of the Regiment was not well received.Apparently, French composers, Berlioz among them, felt threatened by the Donizetti blitz. “Monsieur Donizetti seems to treat us like a conquered country,” Berlioz wrote. “It is a veritable invasion. One can no longer speak of the opera houses of Paris, but only of the opera houses of Donizetti!”Well, eventually, Donizetti did win over French hearts and minds. And it's ironic to note that 100 years after its 1840 premiere, Paris was indeed an occupied country. In 1940, German tanks rolled into Paris, and at the Metropolitan Opera in New York, patriotic French soprano Lily Pons used her starring role in a revival of Donizetti's The Daughter of the Regiment to express her solidarity with the French Resistance. She added a rousing version of La Marseillaise to the finale of Donizetti's score, which brought sympathetic American audiences to their feet.Music Played in Today's ProgramGaetano Donizetti (1797-1848): La Fille du Regiment, excerpt; Joan Sutherland, soprano; Covent Garden Orchestra; Richard Bonynge, cond. “L'Elisir d'Amore” — “The Elixir of Love” — is what's known as an opera buffa, or comic opera. That means that we're in for a happy ending. But Donizetti knows that the payoff is only earned through the suffering of his protagonists. In one pivotal moment, our hero Nemorino glimpses his beloved shedding a single tear — and he concludes (crazily, but correctly) that it can only mean that she loves him back.
