Last summer we were lucky enough to attend the European Congress of Mathematics (ECM) in Seville, Spain. The Congress sees the award of several prestigious prizes, including the Otto Neugebauer Prize for the History of Mathematics. In this episode of Maths on the Move we talk to this year's winner of the Otto Neugebauer Prize, Reinhard Siegmund-Schultze, who has worked on and written about mathematicians who fled Nazi Germany. Reinhard tells us about the motivation for his work, how the Nazi regime impacted mathematics and mathematicians, and what future historians might say about the mathematics of today. This content was produced with kind support from the London Mathematical Society.

As a Strength and Conditioning Coach with the US Olympic & Paralympic Committee (USOPC), Jared Siegmund prepares athletes for the apex of achievement and perseverance. Siegmund shares that, contrary to public belief, the Olympic competition cycle is not every four years — Team USA athletes face fierce competition in World Series events along the way to qualify. He also speaks to the creativity required to coach Paralympic athletes, where missing limbs create unique biomechanics and hearing or visual impairments impact cueing. Siegmund touches on his principles-based programming architecture, sample adaptations, and USOPC’s interdisciplinary support team. Additionally, Siegmund and McMahon discuss the new generation of modern athletes who are more in tune with data and can control their preparation experience. The discussion concludes with the importance of a growth mindset and getting out of your comfort zone, as well as opportunities to enter elite sport. Connect with Jared on Instagram at: @jaredsiegmund_ or LinkedIn: @jared-siegmund | Find Eric on Instagram: @ericmcmahoncscs or LinkedIn: @ericmcmahoncscs Show Notes“We have a traditional model that we see in our mind as the perfect technique – a baseball batter swings like this, a swimmer swims like this — but when you're missing a limb, it's going to be altered. The form, the biomechanics is going to be altered, and that goes into their overuse injury stuff, how they're producing force. If we can think of outside-of-the-box creativity, and curiosity, and how we innovate, that's going to drive our ideas, our programming. And it's also going to not pin us to our bias. When we do that, we're going to be more successful to give them what they need.” 9:40 “They're all humans. I think once we start to see that and we start to rip off the sense of kind of scared to do anything with them, or train them, or push them hard, […] just treat them like equals, man. It's like, training's training at the end of the day.” 13:25 “When you have a visually impaired athlete, you had to rely on a completely different skill set of coaching and cueing.” 14:22 “When we get down to crunch time this last six months before, three months before, right into the games. Like, we've done this before. We've challenged you strategically in different groups. We've challenged the coaches in certain ways. So we're all confident, so when this happens, we've already practiced it. And maybe even just having a talk about it kind of gives that anxiety or pressure, and it kind of melts away. You know, we've done it, I'm cool, I got it. I'm going to go win, or at least I'm going to give it my best that day.” 21:20

Große Demonstrationen in vielen deutschen Städten.

The Trespasser by D. H. Lawrence audiobook. Brief Encounter meets Tristan und Isolde - on the Isle of Wight, under a vast sky florid with stars. The consequence is tragic indeed for one of the parties, Siegmund, when he sacrifices family life for a few days' transcendent rapture. His lover, the self-contained Helena, is strong enough to bear a return to the scruffy suburbs. Redemption of a kind is granted to the deserted wife, Beatrice. But between these robust Lawrentian women Siegmund is cancelled out. His love-death is no cosmic swoon but a sordid exit in an unkempt box-room. In this very British romance, there is no earthly escape from outworn attachments and life's deadening routine...

When we left off, Siegmund and Sieglinde had just embarked on their incestuous adventure, leaving behind Sieglinde's cuckolded husband Hunding to wake up to the bad news at dawn. We've since walked several miles from the forest of Hunding's hut, and are now at the base of a mountain where the couple's father spends his time–Wolf, as they called him, or Wotan, Odin–god of contracts and bad weather. It is a new day, at high noon. Let's see what happens next. Click here for the full-score and for the libretto. Previously on Soft Valkyrie. We learned that Fricka is none too happy about this incestuous cuckoldry. Previously on Soft Valkyrie. Wotan began to describe his backstory to Brunhilde. We learn of Alberich's theft of the Rhinegold, of the laborer Fafner's departure with the gold in the form of a dragon, and of Wotan's desire to kill him which is impeded by his contractual obligation. Previously on Soft Valkyrie. Wotan confessed the end of his backstory to Brunhilde, and passed on to her the bad news that she must not help Siegmund. Rather she must lead him to his death. Wotan left, leaving Brunhilde alone, whence she took her horse bridle and went off in search of Siegmund. Click here for the full-score and for the libretto. Previously on Soft Valkyrie. Brunhilde arrived at the Valkyrie's rock, where her sisters were gathering with corpses of heroes to bring to Valhalla, Wotan's debt-plagued palace of death. She asked for someone to help with Sieglinde, who exited East with a sublime finale. But no sooner was this goal achieved than Wotan appeared in a fury, preparing to inflict the severest punishment on his daughter for her insubordination.Click here for the full-score and for the libretto. Previously on Soft Valkyrie. Siegmund met Brunhilde, who came bearing bad news at first. A noble death dialog ensued. But no sooner had Siegmund valiantly threatened to murder his new sister-bride so as to meet her in Valhalla when he died, Brunhile changed her mind, and joined Siegmund's side, against their father's wishes. Now Hunding approaches, and we will see how things play out.Click here for the full-score and for the libretto. Welcome back to Soft Valkyrie. We've just left the scene of battle, where Wotan was flying into a rage at Brunnhilde's disobedience. Now, look off to the horizon. See that peak out there? T hat's where Brunhilde's sisters, the other Valkyries, like to gather and play with their dead heroes. Brunhilde has just escaped the scene of battle with Sieglinde in tow, and must be headed in their direction to ask for help. Let's fly on over, and see how things are going.Click here for the full-score and for the libretto. Previously on Soft Valkyrie. After Wotan threw a fit on discovering that Brunnhilde's eight sisters were hiding her from him, she finally willingly came forward to submit to his punishments. He explained his plan– to put her into a deep coma, and leave her to lie in wait. She will only awaken if someone braves the danger to find her. And then she will marry this savior. The valkyries were appalled at this idea, and begged their father to revoke his sentence, but Wotan denied them in spite and fury, sending the group away, leaving himself alone with Brunnhilde, exhausted in the twilight. Previously on Soft Valkyrie, Brunnhilde explained herself further to Wotan, first asking for his mercy, but eventually proudly embracing her decision and fate, with no regrets. She has helped save the Walsung family, by sending Sieglinde and the broken sword off to the forest, where the mother-to-be will soon give birth to the heroic child of incest, Siegfried. Wotan responded with ambivalence, acknowledging that her defense of Siegmund reflected his deeper intentions, but he remains committed to his punishment. Previously on Soft Valkyrie. Brunnhilde, resigned to disappear into her coma, begged Wotan to at least surround her with a magic fire that will scare away everyday adventurers so that only the most fearless of heroes might manage to awaken her. Wotan is deeply moved by this proposal and accepts it. The two cherish their final moments together in soft eyes, embaces, kisses, and a sweet lullaby.Click here for the full-score and for the libretto.
