It's the battle of the big beasts this month with two mammoth new game launches and a third poised to be revealed. So, Jonathan from Pinball Magazine and Martin from Pinball News are back to bring you all the details in April's Pinball Industry News PINcast. The first beast into the arena was the Sandworm from Barrels of Fun's new Dune game. Based on the 2021 and 2024 Dune movies, the second release from the Houston-based manufacturer comes fully loaded with extensive cinematic assets as well as a new Horizon Atmospheric Lighting system, anti-reflective glass, a shaker motor and even a topper.Facing off against the Sandworm is the ‘Eighth Wonder of the World' in the form of Stern Pinball's new King Kong: Myth of Terror Island. The story of King Kong has been reimagined for Stern's latest cornerstone game which features an animated Kong being summoned by a swinging gong. Kong wreaks havoc, of course, aided by a giant spider as he blocks the balls and smashes a subway car to release the locked balls inside. The third beast is the elephant-in-the-room that is Jersey Jack Pinball's upcoming Harry Potter game. With manufacturing already underway at the company's Elk Grove Village factory, what will be the impact when we get the official release, expected later this month? Also looming large over the industry is the effect of trade tariffs – imposed, planned or threatened. Pinball manufacturers are taking their own approaches to the price increases on buying components and shipping complete games, while others are taking a wait-and-see approach. With some cuts in production already announced or anticipated, Jonathan and Martin look at who's doing what, and what it means for the wider market. There are also current production updates, along with news of some people leaving their posts and others being appointed to new positions.Plus, there are new code updates, of course, as well as some new products and limited-time special offers you won't want to miss. Also in this month's PINcast, Jonathan and Martin swap the pinball table for the dinner table to find out What's Cooking with… legendary game designer, Steve Ritchie. Steve spills the beans on his favourite recipes, so you too can eat like a King. So, make sure you download or stream this latest Pinball Industry News PINcast right now from your favourite podcast supplier. You'll also find it on YouTube and YouTube Music, or you can get it direct from Spotify on the link above, and don't forget you can also subscribe to the PINcast for free to guarantee you get the freshest episode delivered to you every month, the very moment it is released. With so much happening in the pinball industry right now and so much more excitement coming up, join Jonathan and Martin each month to guarantee you don't miss any of it. After all, it's the podcast the pinball industry listens to.

They try something a bit different this time with an excerpt from a novel—or rather, a novelization. Did you know the world was introduced to the Eighth Wonder, King Kong, in a book three months before the classic film released? Mr. Kami has the Legal Action Team's founder, Raymund Martin, who claims to have received a first edition copy of the book as a gift from a lovelorn secretary (and to have tried to save the book from falling into public domain in the 1960s) read the harrowing chapter where beauty comes face-to-face with the beast. In this solo episode Stories from the River, host Charlie Malouf dives into the concept of the power of compounding and its significance across various domains of life, including personal growth, professional development, and investing. He begins by posing a thought-provoking scenario: choosing between $1 million up front or a penny that doubles every day for 30 days. Through this example, he illustrates the astounding effects of compounding, which can turn a seemingly insignificant amount into more than $5 million in a month. He relates this back to his previously discussed theme of consistency, emphasizing how small, disciplined actions over time can yield exponential results. Throughout the episode, Charlie references notable works and figures such as Albert Einstein, Jim Collins, and Warren Buffet to underpin his points. He explains concepts like the 20 Miles March discipline from Collins' books, where consistent, moderate progress can lead to both short-term goals as well as significant long-term achievements. He also refers to authors like Mark Batterson (who highlights the importance of consistent daily actions in his books "Win the Day" and "Do It For a Day") and William Green (who espouses the virtues of compounding from the world's greatest investors in his book "Richer, Wiser, Happier").  Concluding with encouragement for listeners to adopt a disciplined, consistent approach, Charlie underscores that such steadfast behavior will ultimately lead to astonishing compounded gains, both in the short term and over a long period. The Pitfalls of Living the "Great" Life: A Hilarious Peek into the World of Narcissists Hey folks, gather 'round for a laugh because today we're delving into the riveting world of narcissists! You know, those people who seem to have it all – the confidence, the charisma, the unwavering belief that the universe revolves around them. But hold on to your hats, because as it turns out, the life of a narcissist is not all it's cracked up to be. In fact, it kind of sucks. Let's take a whimsical journey into the not-so-glamorous life of the self-obsessed, PNB style! Picture this: you wake up, and the first thing you see in the mirror is the most fantastic person on the planet – yourself. Now, most of us struggle to pull ourselves together in the morning, but not our dear narcissist friend. No, they're too busy admiring their reflection, thinking, "Wow, the world is so lucky to have me in it." But here's the kicker – they can't truly enjoy their morning coffee. Why? Because they're too busy planning their next grand entrance. You see, narcissists are like peacocks on steroids, constantly in need of an audience to validate their existence. So, while you're sipping your coffee and scrolling through your cat memes, the narcissist is carefully crafting their dramatic entrance, probably involving fireworks and a red carpet. Now, let's talk relationships. You'd think being a narcissist would make you a magnet for love and adoration. Well, think again. It's not easy being the center of the universe when no one else got the memo. Sure, they might have a partner, but it's more like having a personal assistant who's required to applaud their every move. Date night? More like the "Praise Me Extravaganza." And don't even get me started on social media. Narcissists love it, but here's the twist – it's a constant battle between crafting the perfect image and dealing with the crushing reality that not everyone thinks they're the Eighth Wonder of the World. The struggle is real, my friends. While you're casually posting pics of your brunch, the narcissist is agonizing over filters, captions, and hashtags that will make them look like they've descended from Mount Olympus. Let's address the workplace, shall we? Narcissists are often seen climbing the corporate ladder with the grace of a mountain goat, right? Wrong. Turns out, it's hard to climb the ladder when everyone else is holding it steady, just waiting for you to fall. Colleagues are not too thrilled to be working alongside someone who believes the office water cooler is actually a shrine built in their honor. And when they finally reach the top? Well, they've alienated everyone along the way, and the only person left to celebrate their success is the janitor. Sorry, janitor, you deserve better. You'd think being a narcissist means never feeling self-conscious, right? Wrong again. Deep down, they're just like the rest of us, plagued by the fear that one day, someone will see through the facade and discover the imposter within. Imagine constantly living in fear that your carefully constructed house of cards will come crashing down. It's like walking on eggshells, but the eggs are made of fragile self-esteem. Let's not forget the constant need for validation. While you and I might feel a moment of joy when someone compliments our new haircut, the narcissist requires a standing ovation for every sneeze. "Bless you, oh majestic one!" It's exhausting. I mean, even superheroes get tired of saving the day, and they don't have to deal with the constant demand for admiration. folks, the life of a narcissist may seem like a glamorous rollercoaster ride, but in reality, it's more like a shaky ferris wheel missing a few bolts. So, the next time you find yourself envying someone who seems to have it all. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/wayne-weathersby/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/wayne-weathersby/support

Right. The Eighth Wonder of the World …How can you turn a tiny sum into a large one?Speculate in small caps is one way. The problem is you risk losing your shirt. There is another, safer path. All you need is time - lots of it - and some discipline. You will often hear it said that time in the market is more important than timing the market. There is a lot of wisdom to the adage, though, in defence of timing, get it right and you gain significant advantage. The underlying wisdom of the adage derives from the power of compounding, what Albert Einstein called the eighth wonder of the world. “He who understands it, earns it. He who doesn't, pays it,” he is said to have said. (It is one of those attributed quotes, but it's better coming from Einstein than anyone else, I suppose). If I offered you a million quid upfront, or a magical penny that doubles in value every day for 30 days, would you take the million quid? I imagine you would. You fool! A penny that doubles every day would be worth over five million on day thirty. But here's the thing: it is the effect of compounding in the later stages that is breathtaking. The early stages are muted. Take that magical penny. On day 10, it's only worth a fiver. By day 20 it's north of five grand. But it's in the last three or four days that the vast sums are made. Take a look at this table.Compounding works even for relatively low annual returns. To benefit from it you have to start as early as you possibly can, re-invest everything you make and, ideally, keep adding. But it enables you to turn small sums into large ones. Just ask Warren Buffet. This table shows the effects of compounding at different rates of return, but it assumes you don't add to the initial pot. If you do that, the effects are more dramatic.Tell your kids about compounding, and get them saving and investing. They'll thank you.To really benefit from compounding you also need to keep fees and taxes to a minimum. Thus the maximum gets re-invested. Avoid losses like the plague. Keep adding to the pot, and the compounding works even more in your favour. There is a really cool tool here at Monevator, which allows you to see the effects. An initial deposit of £5,000, with £2,000 added every year and a 7% rate of return becomes half a million in forty years and a million in 50.Invest just £2,150 every year at 7% and in fifty years you will have a million quid. But at the same rate over a fifteen year period to get to a million you would have to invest £33,800 - fifteen times as much. The table below, courtesy of Visual Capitalist, demonstrates the maths. The rule of 72There is also a useful predictive tool which can tell you how long it will take for your money to double, assuming you compound at a certain rate. It's called the rule of 72.Further to some correspondence with reader K the other day, I thought I should tell you about it.Divide 72 by your annual rate of return and that will tell you the number of years it will take your portfolio to double.Put in mathematical terms it looks something like this: 72 ÷ by rate of interest/return = number of years.Let's say you have a 5% annual rate of return. 72 divided by 5 is 14.4, so that's how long it will take for your money to double: 14 years five months, give or take. At 10% you will double your money every seven years. (The rule of 72 does not take inflation into account). At the suppressed interest rates of the 2008 to 2021 period, it's a very different story. Savings left in cash at 0.1% would take 720 years to double.Of course, if you lose money, in a given year, it's a very different story. Compound purists avoid losses like the plague, as we all should, and, most of the time, steer clear of cyclical sectors that can be prone to prolonged bear markets - unless they feel they can time them. That's why compounding works well in conjunction with a diversified portfolio. You can read more on portfolios here.Until next time … This is a public episode. Once proclaimed “The Eighth Wonder of the World”, the iconic Brooklyn Bridge was constructed between 1869 and 1883 to span the East River and connect what used to be the two independent cities of New York and Brooklyn. Applying masterful engineering, fortitude and determination, Chief engineers John and Washington Roebling used new technological innovations to plan and build what is now one of America's greatest National Landmarks. In this episode of Your History Your Story, we will be speaking with historian, Jeff Richman, author of “Building the Brooklyn Bridge”. It was good news and bad news for Stock Aitken Waterman in mid-1988. On the upside, their run of hits continued with the next single for Kylie Minogue. After the runway success of "I Should Be So Lucky", Mike Stock and engineer Karen Hewitt were dispatched to Australia to record a follow-up — and we hear all about the meeting to convince Kylie to continue working with SAW after her shabby treatment in London, as well as the ups and downs of the recording sessions that ensued. Pete Hammond tells us about the earlier version of "Got To Be Certain" recorded by Mandy Smith, while David Howells explains how he commissioned music videos filmed in Australia — like the one for Kylie's single — from PWL in London. Another song SAW recorded with more than one vocalist is "Mind Over Matter", which was unfortunately not a success on the UK chart. That song's writer, Michael Jay, reveals why it went from a Debbie Harry track to being recorded and released by E.G. Daily — and he also talks about another PWL tune he wrote: "Cross My Heart" by Eighth Wonder. In more good news, Hazell Dean scored her next hit with "Maybe (We Should Call It A Day)", even if, as she explains, she wasn't that keen on the tune. And in bad news for music lovers: SAW worked with the England Football Team on a song that went all the way down the dumper.
