Hi everybody, Happy New Year! I'm stoked to post this chat with my first guest of 2025: Mediterranean artist extraordinaire PAVLO! Born in Toronto to Greek parents, Pavlo's amazing journey to touring concert halls around the globe is most impressive. Over his 20-year career, he's released 17 albums and 4 PBS TV specials, including his latest which was filmed in Santorini! Two of his albums went GOLD, and he had a Top 10 Billboard hit with “FANTASIA.” In 2002, Pavlo won a lawsuit against R&B mega stars R-Kelly and Jay-Z, who sampled his music for their hit song “Fiesta.” Pavlo has performed for King Charles and worked/toured with artists such as Jose Feliciano, Olivia Newton John and The Tenors. He also recorded/performed a trio album called “Trifecta” with legendary guitarist OSCAR LOPEZ and Hall of Famer RIK EMMETT (Triumph). Their subsequent national tour was sold out, and the album earned Pavlo a Juno nomination!Playing what he calls “Mediterranean music”- a blend of Greek, flamenco, Latin and Balkan flavours, Pavlo chats about his early childhood, how he went GOLD on his debut album and sold out Toronto's Massey Hall. We also talk about his continuous growth in popularity by orchestrating the release of 4 PBS specials, allowing him to tour constantly all over North America. Pavlo has headlined over 3000 concerts so far and, being a born entertainer, will keep performing and performing. This was a fun chat I enjoyed very much! Remember the summer of 2020? The good old days of lockdown? That was the first summer that I was producing Countermelody, and during that time I tried to inject a little levity into the podcast by doing a long series on crossover. One such episode was devoted to a century of tenors singing crossover, reaching back further than a century from Hermann Jadlowker and Caruso himself and extending to the present day. There was such a wealth of gorgeous material which led to an additional bonus episode on such “Rogue Tenors,” which includes (among the German-speaking singers) Helge Rosvaenge, Fritz Wunderlich, Peter Schreier, Richard Tauber, Marcel Wittrisch, Jonas Kaufmann, Anton Dermota, Walther Ludwig, Herbert Ernst Groh, Joseph Schmidt, Jan Kiepura, and Julius Patzak; others include Stuart Burrows, Roland Hayes, Richard Lewis, Lawrence Brownlee, Jan Peerce, José Carreras, Kenneth McKellar, Noah Stewart, Tino Rossi, Luigi Alva, Giuseppe di Stefano, and Jerry Hadley in a wide range of repertoire and styles ranging from Neapolitan songs Kurt Weill; from folk songs to Victorian parlor songs; from operettas and Tonfilm Schlager to jazz and rock. It's a rollicking good ride; hold on tight and enjoy! Countermelody is a podcast devoted to the glory and the power of the human voice raised in song. Singer and vocal aficionado Daniel Gundlach explores great singers of the past and present focusing in particular on those who are less well-remembered today than they should be. Daniel's lifetime in music as a professional countertenor, pianist, vocal coach, voice teacher, and journalist yields an exciting array of anecdotes, impressions, and “inside stories.” At Countermelody's core is the celebration of great singers of all stripes, their instruments, and the connection they make to the words they sing. By clicking on the following link (https://linktr.ee/CountermelodyPodcast) you can find the dedicated Countermelody website which contains additional content including artist photos and episode setlists. The link will also take you to Countermelody's Patreon page, where you can pledge your monthly support at whatever level you can afford.

Jewish opera. Sounds crazy, no? No! While not in the high percentages of Jewish composers or content in stage musicals or Christmas songs, there's more than no Jewish presence in the operatic ouvre. Coincident to my performing in Ken Ludwig's A Comedy of Tenors, here's a quick review. Frank Murphy is joined by his friend Mitch Moore, who is a freelance writer. Mitch likes to solve the Sunday and Monday crossword puzzles. Both he and Frank try to solve the Monday puzzle as fast as possible. Frank has broken the five-minute barrier but Mitch has yet to go “sub 5.” Mitch and his wife went to Glacier National Park and Yellowstone National Park. They spent several days at Yellowstone. Frank and his wife would like to go back and spend more than a day at Yellowstone. Frank and Jere visited Tom Kent, one of Frank's radio mentors, in Cleveland on the day after the eclipse in April. Tom died of cancer in June. On Tom's birthday in August, hundreds of his Facebook friends wished him a happy birthday, obviously unaware that he had died. This episode is sponsored by BoneZones.com (don't forget the S). Buy books and other merchandise autographed by Body Farm founder Dr. Bill Bass at https://bonezones.com/ including Body Farm t-shirts. Contact BoneZones to hire Frank to give a presentation about Dr. Bass and the Body Farm. Jere attempted to take two grandsons to McKay's used bookstore but it happened to be the same day as the store's anniversary. The store was overrun with fans trying to win prizes by driving to all five McKay's stores in North Carolina and Tennessee. Mitch points out that the store used to be known as McKay Books and that in the South, people tend to add an S to store names like Kroger, Walmart, and others. Mitch recently finished the first draft of a book. He set the book in rural Arkansas during the same time period that he was growing up there. Frank had a poster printed using the image of an East Tennessee PBS monthly program guide that included him among some actual celebrities. Every time Frank buys a package of 700 coffee filters, he wonders if he will be able to use them all. The Tennessee Valley Fair asked Frank and Becca James to emcee the Fair Food Throwdown on Saturday, September 7 and the Sweet Goodness Doughnut Challenge on Thursday, September 12, 2024. Frank used bonus points to get a free Frappuccino but rather than drink it, he saved it in the freezer. A couple of weeks later he bought a Frappuccino to earn 75 bonus points. He put it in the freezer to save it for another day and then realized the first one was still there. Frank's grandson Artie chastised him for not saying “excuse me” after a gastrointestinal outburst. Frank started saying “Pardon me boys, is that the Chattanooga Choo Choo” every time it happened again. Frank explained the reference, which made Artie want to watch The Glenn Miller Story starring James Stewart. Frank will be checking in the audience members at Marble City Opera's “Tenors, Tuxedos, and Stalactites” concert on Saturday, August 17, 2024. The gate opens at 4:00 p.m. and the one-hour concert starts at 5:00 p.m. Get tickets at https://www.marblecityopera.com/tickets before they sell out. Mitch is the drummer in an ‘80s cover band called Vinyl Tap. The band will perform at Ale' Rae's, 937 N. Amazing Mazie. Practicing kindness. Leadership. Bobby was a little late to the party when discovering TOMMY, but now we can see him star on Broadway as Cousin Kevin in the Tony Nominated revival of TOMMY. This is his third Broadway show, and not only does Bobby discuss his approach to Cousin Kevin, but also talks very openly about what it's like to lead a show where most of the cast are Chicago transplants making their Broadway debut. Bobby is currently reprising his performance in TOMMY from the Goodman Theatre's 30th anniversary production. Broadway: Company (dir. Marianne Elliott); A Bronx Tale (dirs. Today, it's back on Broadway in a dazzling all-new production, Tony Award®️ nominated for Best Musical Revival, that feels more relevant than ever. “Everything about this exhilarating production shakes you awake and leaves you buzzed: Knockout singing, superbly inventive stagecraft and a star-making performance from 24-year-old Ali Louis Bourzgui as the Pinball Wizard that's the most exciting New York stage debut in years.” (NY Post) “Broadway has nothing else like this wizardry going on, not this season and nothing I know of for next season. Visually and sonically overwhelming, it's a prescient masterpiece of a rock opera.” Chris Jones, Chicago Tribune Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

“Octave displacement is a really big thing with adolescent singers. Make a game out of it - I'll have them match me, match me up an octave, match me down an octave - versus scolding when you're in the middle of rep and someone is singing too low and you just point and say ‘that's too low.' That's a little ambiguous for the average 13-year-old. To give them the strength to identify it themselves is practicing the skill we want to see played out in the repertoire.”Since 2006, Mr. Oakes has served as Director of Choral Music and Music Instructor at The Baylor School, a grade 6-12 independent day and boarding school in Chattanooga. Under his direction, the choral program has grown to include over 200 participants in four student choirs and a faculty choir. In 2015, he was awarded Baylor's Glenn Ireland Chair for Distinguished Teaching and starts his service as Chair of Baylor's Fine Arts Department beginning with the 2019-2020 school year.Mr. Oakes also serves as Artistic Director of the Chattanooga Boys Choir, a music education and performance organization founded in 1954 which now includes over 120 choristers ages 8-18 in five ensembles. Including innovative performance opportunities and collaborative community initiatives, the CBC maintains a performance calendar of thirty appearances annually. The choir has performed and toured extensively, including performance tours to Europe, Canada, and Cuba. Recording opportunities for the CBC have included commercially-released recordings with Stephen Curtis Chapman, Casting Crowns, and the grammy-nominated NAXOS recording of Maurice Ravel's L'enfant et les sortilèges with the Nashville Symphony Orchestra. He is the former President of the ACDA's Southern Region and in 2012, he was selected as one of seven conductors chosen to represent the United States at the inaugural ACDA International Conductor Exchange Program in Cuba.As a conductor/clinician, he has conducted numerous honor choirs and festivals throughout the United States, including ACDA regional honor choirs. A lifelong advocate for music in worship, he has served churches in Florida, Georgia, and Tennessee and as a clinician/conductor for children and youth choirs at Lake Junaluska, Massanetta Springs, and Montreat church music conferences.Mr. Oakes earned the Bachelor of Music Education degree from the University of Florida and the Master of Sacred Music degree in Choral Conducting from Emory University. There are spacious places in the world, where outcrops of woodland can be heard singing together in strong winter gales. Upland places. Uninhabited places. Naturally exposed, where the upper reaches of the land meet with the sky. Singing, to trees, does not involve what we have as vocal chords, or hitting the right note, or picking the right moment to come in. The wind is the conductor. The choir are the trees. The voices are the trunks, branches, twigs, and leaves. Basses. Tenors. Altos. Sopranos. The physical form of each tree is complex and varied, in thickness, texture, shape, and give. The more slender the form, such as a twig, the more it gives. Each shapes the flow of the wind, in particular ways. Each creates vectors. Lattice patterned chords, invisible, made of nothing but turbulent, vibrating air. Take just one tree. One form, that sings with ten thousand different voices. In a wide open landscape, where three audibly separate outcrops of trees can be heard all at once, all catching and turning the wind into sound, a sense of three dimensional space can be heard, and felt. Heard, as vast banks of air move over wide expanses of ground. Felt, as deep dark rumbles. As rich brown surges. As delicate, detailed whisping textures. Rising. Falling. Rising. Blending, from one aural shape, into another. * We made this recording at the end of December, leaving the Lento box alone and overnight, whilst up in the Peak District. We're really happy the Lento box was able to capture this sound scene so perfectly in the strong winds.

Today's is a mammoth episode, one of my longest ever, so I suggest you listen to it in easily digestible segments. It's mammoth because it's a gigantic subject: great Mozart tenors of the 20th century, covering more than 100 years of recorded documents of the finest examples of tenorial interpretations of the big Mozart operas as well as some of his lesser-known works, including his concert arias. You will be dazzled (and that is a promise and a guarantee) by performances by Fritz Wunderlich (for many of us, the ne plus ultra of lyric tenors), George Shirley, Richard Tauber, Anton Dermota, Léopold Simoneau, Nicolai Gedda, Gösta Winbergh, John McCormack, David Rendall, Peter Schreier, and countless others, including lesser-known figures such as John van Kesteren, Kálmán Pataky, and Wiesław Ochman, and duets featuring Pilar Lorengar, Leontyne Price, Roberta Alexander, and Margaret Price. I also feature a peek into the future with a special salute to the young tenor Alex Banfield, whose work has impressed me enormously. The entire episode is dedicated to the memory of my friend Jerry Hadley, one of the supreme Mozart tenors of all time. When Plácido Domingo, José Carreras and Luciano Pavarotti teamed up for their first joint performance on 7th July, 1990 in Rome, it was intended as a one-off collaboration to celebrate the FIFA World Cup. But the concert triggered instant worldwide fame for the trio, who became known as The Three Tenors, and their live recording became the biggest-selling classical album of all time. In this episode, Arion, Rebecca and Olly consider how, by mixing showtunes with opera, the Tenors created the ‘classical crossover' genre that spawned Russell Watson, Il Divo and Katherine Jenkins; explain how Carreras' recovery from leukemia was the reason for the concert coming together; and reveal how their iconic Nessun Dorma encore was nearly not included at all… Further Reading: • ‘TENORS, ANYONE? 3 has power. Look around, and you'll notice it everywhere. The 3 bears in the Goldilocks fairy taleThe 3 Tenors (like them or hate them, the point is we all know about them)The 3 primary colours Did you notice I just gave you 3 examples? 3 is deeply ingrained in our culture, but it goes further than that. There's some solid science behind why 3's appeal to the human brain. Guess what?! Because 3 is such an easily grasped concept for the upper storey, we can use the power of 3 consciously to get ahead in business too. The concept is very obvious when you think about it, but sometimes we're so go-go-go it's hard to see what's staring us in the face. Until someone points it out, and plants the seed of what will be a turning point for our business success. Today, that person is me... ☺ The power of 3 concept builds on some of my earlier podcasts. It wasn't until the late 1700s and early 1800s that the brilliant operatic tenor as we know him today came into his own.
It's The Three Tenors! No not those other guys. Dan and Joe are joined by brother-in-law, Matt to discuss why operatic tenors are so awesome. Specifically, we talk about five singers we admire, and one song that showcases each of their vocal abilities. The list and the links to the performance can be found below.
