On the radio show this week we dive into the confusion, harm, and chaos caused by Donald Trump's ridiculous Executive Orders and nominees, from a funding freeze that shut down Medicaid portals in all 50 states to the nomination of an unqualified, unfit, and utterly confused cabinet nominee in RFK Jr. We also learn about how the funding freeze has a situational impact on the already unstable child care sector, and how our advocacy helped reverse course – for now.  After that, we cover parenting through this chaos and how to advocate for your child and yourself. Finally, we discuss the impact of Trump's executive orders and funding threats on the criminal justice system and racial justice programs, and where we can push back.    *Special guests include: Joi Chaney, Protect Our Care, @ProtectOurCare, @protectourcare.org, Nina Perez, MomsRising/MamásConPoder, @MomsRising, @momsrising.bsky.social, @MamásConPoder, @mamasconpoder.bsky.social; Antoiniqua Daniels, MomsRising; Liz Komar, The Sentencing Project, @sentencingproj

Hey gang. It seems that the Republicans can't stop running their most hardcore Southern Strategy Talking Points. I would like to have my co-host, Nina Perez with me to speculate on an additional reason beyond her having a very small amount of African in her background through her mostly european father from the island. That could be a longer conversation though. For now, Kamala, in the eyes and minds of republicans is not Indian at all. Not European at all but super dark skin, Alabama Plantation BLACK BLACK BLACK BLACK. And They are talking about her in that context and that context only.

What happens when your infant child has medical needs you need to tend to, but there is no paid family medical leave in place? You get pushed out of the workforce, an that is exactly what happened to Kristin Rowe-Finkbeiner, Executive Director and Co-founder of MomsRising. It was this event, which Kristin appropriately calls an unforeseen "health crisis" that pushed Kristin out of the workforce. She found herself unemployed, taking care of an infant and going down a rabbit hole where she went looking for answers (and stats!) about what moms were facing in the United States... surely she wasn't the only one going through this... That stressful and life-changing event that led to her co-creating and leading MomsRising, a movement of more than a million people working to increase family economic security, stop discrimination, and build a nation where everyone can thrive.  In this episode, Diana has a candid conversation with Kristin about how heer personal experiences led her to join other moms to be advocates for change. Today, Kristin and the entire MomsRising team work hard to ensure that moms' voices and experiences are taken into account when policymakers (at the state and federal level -- yes even the White House!) listen to moms when they're crafting policies. In this powerful conversation they also discuss: Why moms' voices and stories matter What's at stake in the 2024 elections Why we should be vigilant and fight disinformation Why "parental rights" movements like M4L are not winning MomsRising's efforts to mobilize moms all over the country  .... AND MORE!  You can follow (and join) MomsRising -- (they've got members in all 50 states!) by going to MomsRising.org/join   If you liked this episode make sure to check out:  Ep. 19 The Power of Black Moms with Monifa Bandele (MomsRising.org)  Ep. 35: Reimagining Schools without Police with Beatriz Beckford  Ep. 42: Representation, Storytelling and Motherhood with S. So, uh, everybody just, uh, to pull back the curtain, we are talking about compulsion’s and especially compulsive eating today and how it is so prevalent in our world. We’re taught as kids that eating for comfort is a way to cope. And, you know, I mean all the way down to that hard wiring of the brain, it feels good to nourish ourselves, right? It feels good to take care of that basic needs and it can run a muck and, and become a problem later in life. I know that was the case for me. And, uh, Nina. It was the case for you too. Would you like to talk about, um, how eating for comfort became a struggle for you?Speaker 2 00:02:31 Yeah. Um, I mean, it’s still a struggle, right? I mean, it’s still an every day getting up, fighting it struggle. Um, so for me was I was abused as a child, so I couldn’t find comfort where I was, uh, wasn’t really being supported. So I didn’t realize that this was what I was doing as a child, but I got really addicted to sugar. So it was like sugar

Jim is off traveling the world this week, but Nina Perez from Project Fandom joins the lonely A.Ron to talk about the latest episode of AMC’s The Walking Dead which… isn’t half bad as far as these things go.  Lots of Simon, an effective Rick vs Negan scene, and one of the most disgustingly awesome set pieces in all of The Walking Dead history combine to make for an entertaining episode.  Sure, Rick’s back to being a loon, the garbage people are still garbage, and Oceanside has clearly lost their collective minds, but that’s why we said it’s “not half bad” instead of “pretty good”. If you dig Nina, you can find her and her awesome crew over at Project Fandom covering basically all of television, movies, books, comic books, just all media in general.  You can also follow her on Twitter, and check out her published books! Welcome to the first episode of “Penny Earful”, representing Bald Move’s podcast covering Showtime’s gothic horror series, “Penny Dreadful”.  A.Ron and Cecily are both high on the premiere episode, “The Day Tennyson Died”, and share our thoughts and opinions Vanessa in recluse mode, Ethan on the Lamb, Sir Malcolm’s new sidekick, and get incredibly excited for the tease of the new big evil bad guy our gang will be squaring off against. All this and of course, feedback from our fellow fans. Be on the lookout for an additional podcast, which I lifted from our Bald Move TV podcast last year where I talked with Nina Perez from Project Fandom (who I brain farted and thought I had the conversation with Shayne Bowman from Film Schlubs, apologies to all involved for the mixup!) about our thoughts and feelings about all of season three, if you want to refresh yourself on where things are at or get an idea of my approach to the show.  It should be dropping about the same time as this episode, check out our feed for details OR visit baldmove.com… Support Bald Move:  Amazon  |  Club Bald Move Join the discussion:  Email  |  Forums  |  Facebook  |  Twitter

Nina Perez from Project Fandom joins me again to break down episode 211 of Orange is the New Black, “Take A Break From Your Values”.  It features the surprising backstory of Sister Ingalls, and raises a lot of questions about racial relations, treatment of the elderly, right to self determination, and the coexistence of nudity and alcohol.  Also, continued grossness from Larry and Polly.
