In this live-streamed episode, Stef and Sarah explore the nuanced world of cravings — what drives them, how they differ from binge or overeating urges, and why they're often more complicated than they seem. They discuss the physiological and emotional undercurrents behind cravings, from hormonal shifts to nervous system dysregulation, weaving in personal experiences — including Stef's two most memorable pregnancy cravings. The conversation unpacks how cravings show up differently for restrictors versus permitters, how appetite and craving aren't always the same thing, and what it looks like to approach cravings from a more regulated, self-led mindset. Rather than reducing cravings to something to fix or fear, this episode invites a deeper, more compassionate understanding of them — one that honors both biology and psychology. In this episode Wendi discusses Resilience and its impact on our ability to recover from life's adversities that strike our food, weight, and life. Why does one person persevere and the other falter and fall? The answer may be as simple, or as complex, as resilience.
There is a psychology to everything we do in life. From work, to home life, relationships, exercise, and yes…even to food. There is a psychology not only to how we live but to how we eat and how we lose weight. In this episode, Wendi dives into the how's and why's behind the psychology of weight loss. Isn't it time we thought about food and weight like we think about our lives?
In this episode Wendi discusses why change can be so hard, and she breaks effective change down into prescriptive steps for action. You really don't have to be a slave to the past anymore. You really can have the life, food and weight you want without it being hard. Remember: it's practice not perfection.
In this NEW episode, Wendi talks about the physiology and psychology of rewards and why it is so important to have a reward system to rely upon. Food or other addictions are easy ways our brains ignite the reward center. Isn't it time you find how you used to feel good without food and become what you were meant to become?

This episode is guest-hosted by Tonya Miller. Tonya interviews Jaci Wightman, who shares her compelling story of recovery from dependence on food, and on sugar in particular. Jaci describes the ways that she felt prepared and guided in her journey, which began with her learning that sugar addiction is very real. Jaci talks about being resistant to this idea for years before allowing herself to trust that the Lord was guiding her to the relief she so badly needed from her dependence. Jaci also provides insights into why her reliance on food developed, and how healing from her dependence has had nothing to do with dieting or attaining a certain body shape or size. I am grateful for Jaci's courage and for the hopeful perspective she brings to this topic. Jaci discusses the societal trends and pressures that influence so many people negatively and shares ideas for approaching and dismantling the shame that often interferes with our ability to see ourselves as God does. Jaci talks about feeling called to teach others about sugar addiction and to support them in their own healing. I feel very hopeful that this podcast will be a springboard that can help us examine our own attitudes, and associated behaviors, not only about food and body image, but also about other compulsions that we may turn to, instead of to the Savior, for help and comfort. I am glad there are people like Jaci, who not only have the experience, but also the expertise, to help all of us be more mindful and aware around this topic. Jaci's website and other social media links are shared below. Of note, Jaci was also interviewed in Episode 706 (link in show notes) As a side note, I'm focusing only on sharing stories associated with the Queer-LDS experience now. The first in a four-part series called: Back to Basics to explore the foundational concepts of disordered eating and eating disorders from the ground floor. We hear from so many people who weren't aware that their experiences had a name, or that other people are dealing with them, too. In this first session, we're looking at the question: Do I Have a Problem? Is what I'm dealing with considered a disorder? Is it binge eating? Restricting? Orthorexia? What if I'm just an emotional eater? Do you need to have a diagnosis to listen to this podcast or get "help"? Binge Eating, Restriction, Orthorexia, Bulimia, and Chronic Dieting What's the difference between ED and disordered eating? Is it helpful to name the problem? Do we need labels? A few ways of looking at it If you stop binge eating and you just overeat, is your issue more stigmatized? Now it's not even a "real" eating disorder? What is binge eating? "Normal amounts of food" is highly subjective Does "normal eating" even exist nowadays?? What constitutes "restriction"? Whats the difference between "normal healthy eating" and orthorexia? Valerie Mason-John (Vimalasara) is a writer, Buddhist teacher, a person in recovery, and the founder of Eight Step Recovery. In this episode of Flourishing After Addiction, Vimalasara shares their transformative journey, beginning with childhood in an orphanage and evolving through various addictions, with a particular focus on their struggle with bulimia, to arrive at their current role as a spiritual teacher and author. Their story is a testament to the complexity of eating disorders and their commonalities with traditional addictions, with implications for all varieties of compulsive behavior.Through probing the nature of compulsive eating, Vimalasara describes the essence of addiction from the Buddhist perspective. We discuss how to work with craving, chronic relapse, and the drive toward substitute addictions, redirecting oneself instead toward “sobriety of thoughts and feelings,” highlighting Vimalasara's journey toward finding balance and peace, rather than simply stopping the behavior. This discussion is also a great exploration of various recovery methods and pathways, including especially the mutual help recovery community Vimalasara created, the Eight Step Recovery program. If you are curious to learn more about what actually happens in these types of alternative mutual help groups, this is a great introduction. This part of the conversation also highlights the value of a pluralistic, diverse approach to recovery, one that is necessarily in constant flux—for example, how Vimalasara is now in a relationship with a “big book thumper!”Finally, we discuss Vimalasara's perspective on how addiction intersects with timeless issues in mental health and wellness, from her first addiction—“to be in control of life”—to her biggest addiction: “to be loved and noticed.” They give us practical pointers for practice, working with difficult feelings, and concludes with a brief guided practice that can be helpful for a variety of habitual behaviors.Valerie Mason-John (Vimalasara) is an award-winning author and editor of ten books, including Eight Step Recovery: Using The Buddha's Teachings to Overcome Addiction, and Detox Your Heart: Meditations for Emotional Trauma. Their book I Am Still Your Negro: An Homage to James Baldwin was shortlisted for both the Dorothy Livesay and Gerald Lampert Awards. They are the co-founder of the mutual help group Eight Step Recovery, which holds meetings in the UK, USA, Canada, Mexico, India, Finland, and online. After her second pregnancy, Ashlee reached her highest weight and wanted to give up. Ashlee found an accountability group of women who followed Gin's book Delay, Don't Deny. This helped her to stay consistent with her IF lifestyle, but with all of the stress in her life, Ashlee stopped fasting. Then in May of 2021, Ashlee found the book, Breaking Free from Compulsive Eating and this changed her life. She switched to OMAD (One Meal a Day) and lost 30 pounds. Ashlee has learned that mindset is a powerful part of the IF lifestyle, and is thankful she has struggled with finding her way with IF so that she can help others. When was the last time you ate so much that you felt stuffed? Was it a big Thanksgiving meal or when you celebrated your best friend's birthday with that ginormous cake and ice cream? Maybe after a bad day, you almost finished a half gallon of ice cream along with some cookies while watching TV. How did you feel afterward? Frustrated that you ate so much you made your stomach hurt or did you play the guilt and shame game? Overeating every once in a while is normal. However, in compulsive eating, food is often the way of coping with negative emotions. Then you feel guilty, ashamed or depressed. These are different feelings than when you just ate too much at Thanksgiving. Bariatric psychologist Dr. Connie joins me to talk about compulsive eating and how to deal with those feelings of guilt and shame.Visit Procarenow.com for all of your vitamin, calcium and protein needs. Here are the questions Dr. Connie and I discuss on today's episode:Let's start by explaining the difference between compulsive eating and binge eating disorder also called BED.Today, our focus is on compulsive eating. I often see compulsive eating start as a result of diet restriction where foods are seen as either good or bad. When you don't allow yourself certain foods, at some point it's easy to say, forget it and eat way too much of that restricted food. Other times, it starts as a mindless habit like munching in front of TV instead of eating a meal of protein food and other macros on a regular schedule. From your perspective how does someone typically start compulsive eating? Are there underlying emotional issues or a negative body image? What stands in the way of asking for treatment for either compulsive overeating? How common is compulsive eating in the bariatric community? Before someone is cleared for surgery, do they need to be treated for compulsive eating first? Let's get specific. How do you overcome guilt and shame? What are your best strategies? What haven't you said that we need to know?
Adam creates a hypnosis session to help a client deal with a compulsion to eat snacks and less healthy food. Clip discussed in this episode https://youtu.be/KaknXLvgJI4 Heads up: Grab your link for the 5 Minute Appetite Suppressant Session here: https://www.theshiftinside.com/sessions/ One of my favourite films is Arrival, starring Amy Adams and Jeremy Renner. But it's not just a great movie - it is a brilliant metaphor for ending binge eating. Adams plays Louise Banks, a linguist who the army have asked to help do a bit of translation. Alien translation. Yup, there's a egg-shaped UFO floating in the air, and it's all down to her to find out why. In this clip, we see Louise take off her protective suit in order to really communicate properly with the aliens. Everyone is freaked out, but no harm comes to her. In this clip, the protective suit is emotional eating, and the aliens are life. The beautiful, messy, uncertain life you miss out on when you keep yourself finished via binges and junk food. Louise takes a risk and realises she CAN get to know the aliens better. Are you willing to take the risk of managing your life without food? What might your life look like without food compulsion? RESOURCES Eating Coach Facebook group https://www.facebook.com/groups/eatingcoachgroup 5 Minute Appetite Suppressant Session This Thursday 28th July Get access here: https://www.theshiftinside.com/sessions/ Imagine if there were an appetite suppressant that was 100% natural, with zero side effects. One that is also a digestive aid and can help reduce stress. The only drawback is that you need to sit and do nothing for 5 minutes while the pill takes effect. Oh yes, and it's free too. Q: Would you take it? A: Why the heck wouldn't you? Something 100% natural that makes you eat less, with a price tag of £0. At this point you may be thinking: What's the catch, Harriet? And there is one - but it's a catch in the same way that you need to learn to read in order to enjoy The Harry Potter series. A 'catch' that you'll be glad exists. Ok, so the catch, the big reveal - is that this appetite suppressant is…. Slow eating. Ta-dah! Confused? Disappointed? Yes Harriet, I'm Totally Confused What if I told you that eating fast blocks satiety (fullness) signals to your brain. Your stomach can't really know it has had food if it's coming in too fast - and your body cannot properly digest and use the nutrients in the food if you have not chewed it properly. This is a bit like a quiet drink in a cosy pub that suddenly gets overwhelmed by 20 party goers. How well would you be able to get to know each of the new arrivals? Yes Harriet, I'm Pretty Disappointed What if I told you that eating fast puts your body into a state of stress, which triggers the release of cortisol - the fat storage hormone which is responsible for millions of people's central obesity AKA belly fat. Central obesity is one indicator that you could be starting down the path to type II diabetes. So maybe the point of slow eating is to avoid eating your way to a big tummy and a big health problem down the line. Now, what if I told you that there was a easier-than-you-think way to get started with this thing that you assume is too hard and undervalue in order to justify your perception of its difficulty? The answer is to get started in five minute increments. The answer is to turn slow eating into a game, thereby removing all the pressure. The answer is to leverage the power of a tribe to motivate you. The answer is to attend The Eating Coach Zoom session on Thursday 28th July at 8pm UK time. It is free, but there will be no recording. This is only for people who take the trouble to attend. It is a highly experiential session. (Can't make it? Email me info (at) theshiftinside dot com - as I can re run this session if there is enough interest). In it you will…. * Understand the science behind why slow eating is such a powerful appetite suppressant and digestive aid, not to mention anti-stress technique * Discover two simple and fun slow eating games that work with zero effort on your part What you will NOT have to do: No need to eat slowly for more than five minutes No need to eat on camera (you can turn it off if you like - your choice) Bring a piece of fruit or salad veg (eg apple, banana, cucumber, celery etc), a plate and a knife This session is free. If you already get my Note From emails, there is no action to take - I will remind you and send you the Zoom link in good time. Otherwise, fill in the form to ensure you get the Zoom link. This will not be posted in the Facebook group.

Step Two of Overeaters Anonymous talks about restoring ourselves to "sanity" regarding food. Does that mean we are "insane" if we compulsively overeat? In this episode, Brad explores how the meanings of these two terms have diverged over the years and how, by understanding their current meanings, we can adapt this step to our OA journey as atheists and agnostics. Since lockdown began, the jokes about overeating have been coming thick and fast on social media. Having overcome chronic comfort eating myself, I help people to stop. But I must admit, even I've struggled more than usual during the pandemic. It may be that you've tried every diet or technique on the planet and still can't stop yourself from eating. You may have become so frustrated and sick of yourself that you're desperate for another solution. That solution is to treat the cause of overeating, rather than the symptom. You may realise that it's emotional discomfort that causes your comfort eating. Or, you might be baffled by how your overeating habits or binge-eating could be caused by emotion. Maybe you're thinking:“it's just a habit” or, ‘'I Just like food!”But, you want to change things. So, it's time to go a little deeper. The first step towards treating yourself better is to identify whether it is emotion causing you to eat. Eating disorders have a reputation for wrecking emotional havoc in a family and trigger strong emotional reactions by loved ones and therapists who can end up in a tug of war to make the disturbing symptoms stop. But eating disorder specialist Dana Harron says love and compassion are key ingredients to successful treatment. In this episode of The Soul of Life, I speak with Dana about the most common types of disordered eating, and we separate eating disorder facts from fiction. "My partner said that I look really healthy today, and that sounds like a really good thing to say but—oh—that's going to trigger the eating disorder really badly." We review some of the most common eating disorders, like bingeing, bulimia, anorexia, and exercise addiction and what may be at the root of these symptoms. Dana explains how disordered eating affects sex, often shutting down a fully in-the-moment sensory experience in place of performative detachment. And she updates us on the wildly inaccurate under-calculation of the prevalence of disordered eating among boys and men which has historically been thought of as 1 in 10 males.
