This is the time of year when we listen back to some of the conversations from the past year that have helped us clarify the events that bombard us — in part by showing how elite media are clouding them. It's not to say Big Media always get the facts wrong; but that what facts they point us toward, day after day, whose interpretation of those facts they suggest we credit, what responses we're told are worth pursuing — all of that serves media's corporate owners' and sponsors' bottom line, at the expense of all of our lives and our futures. An important part of the work we do — as producers and as listeners — is to help create and support different ways to inform ourselves and stay in conversation. Guests featured on this year's Best of CounterSpin include Chip Gibbons, Svante Myrick, Monifa Bandele, Aron Thorn, Evlondo Cooper, Joe Torres, Colette Watson, Greg Shupak and FAIR's Julie Hollar and Jim Naureckas. As always, we are deeply thankful to all of the activists, researchers, reporters, and advocates who appear on the show. The post The Best of CounterSpin 2024 appeared first on KPFA.

This week on CounterSpin: Elite media can give the impression that problems wax and wane along with their attention to them. So it is with police brutality. The news media has moved on, yet 2023 saw killings by law enforcement up from the previous year, which was up from the year before that. More than 1,200 people were killed, roughly three people every day, including not just those shot dead but also those fatally shocked by a stun gun, beaten, or restrained to death. Thirty-six percent of those killed were fleeing, and they were disproportionately Black. Unheard in the news is the hard work of communities to reimagine public safety without punitive policing. We hear about it from Monifa Bandele from the Movement for Black Lives. Also on the show: Little research is more important or less acknowledged than Princeton's (now UCLA's) Martin Gilens and Northwestern's Benjamin Page 2014 work on the translation of public opinion into public policy. Looking at more than 1,700 policies over 20 years, they concluded that where economic elite views diverged from those of the public — as they would — the public had “zero estimated impact upon policy change, while economic elites are still estimated to have a very large, positive, independent impact.” Awareness of that fundamental disconnect is always relevant — but maybe especially when it comes to election season, where corporate coverage suggests we have an array of choices. How do we acknowledge flaws in the system while still encouraging people to participate and to fight the roadblocks to voting that we're seeing right now? We get at that with Svante Myrick, president of People For the American Way and former mayor of Ithaca, New York. The post Monifa Bandele on Reimagining Public Safety / Svante Myrick on Roadblocks to Voting appeared first on KPFA.

What happens when your infant child has medical needs you need to tend to, but there is no paid family medical leave in place? You get pushed out of the workforce, an that is exactly what happened to Kristin Rowe-Finkbeiner, Executive Director and Co-founder of MomsRising. It was this event, which Kristin appropriately calls an unforeseen "health crisis" that pushed Kristin out of the workforce. She found herself unemployed, taking care of an infant and going down a rabbit hole where she went looking for answers (and stats!) about what moms were facing in the United States... surely she wasn't the only one going through this... That stressful and life-changing event that led to her co-creating and leading MomsRising, a movement of more than a million people working to increase family economic security, stop discrimination, and build a nation where everyone can thrive. In this episode, Diana has a candid conversation with Kristin about how heer personal experiences led her to join other moms to be advocates for change. Today, Kristin and the entire MomsRising team work hard to ensure that moms' voices and experiences are taken into account when policymakers (at the state and federal level -- yes even the White House!) listen to moms when they're crafting policies. In this powerful conversation they also discuss: Why moms' voices and stories matter What's at stake in the 2024 elections Why we should be vigilant and fight disinformation Why "parental rights" movements like M4L are not winning MomsRising's efforts to mobilize moms all over the country .... AND MORE! During the pandemic, the federal government granted schools lunch waivers which allowed them to provide free school lunch to every student, regardless of income. Join Sudanese revolutionaries from on the ground to discuss the flourishing of revolutionary bodies and resurgence of the uprising in Sudan. To hear the original Arabic audio from the speakers, see https://youtu.be/xHCa5rjyLbU. The 2019 revolution in Sudan, which overthrew longtime President Omar al-Bashir, was the earliest of a second-wave of uprisings that has swept from Algeria to Iraq, reigniting the hope of the 2011 revolutions in the region. The uprising, known in Sudan as the December Revolution, culminated in August 2019 in a civilian-military partnership, for what was to be a “transition” to full civilian rule. But in October 2021, a military coup drove out the civilian coalition partners. The resistance that the coup has sparked since has breathed new life into the revolutionary movement in the country, and accelerated the evolution of organizing in a way that bears lessons for movements for social justice everywhere. In response to the coup, widespread mobilizations, led by Sudan's neighborhood-level resistance committees, have produced ongoing strikes, civil disobedience and protests demanding an end to the military coup and the formation of a fully civilian, revolutionary government to decide the country's leadership and its future, and to reclaim control of its looted resources for the benefit of communities. Revolutionary bodies, in particular the network of neighborhood resistance committees which now spread across the country, have pushed the struggle forward beyond previous compromises. They have also offered an alternative model of resistance and governance that presents a clear break from the elite politics of the past. Though the revolution in Sudan has so far been formidable in the face of repression, it faces immense challenges, given the ways in which regional and international counter-revolutionary forces have coalesced to back the military. This leaves us with a crucial question: how can this struggle, whose outcome will have consequences beyond Sudan's borders, go on to achieve its slogan, “freedom, peace and justice”? To explore that question, the panel will highlight voices and analysis of Sudanese activists who are deeply involved in the revolution, and who will provide their take on the stakes involved and the aims, strategies and tactics of the movement. Panelists: Muzan Alneel is a cofounder of the Innovation, Science and Technology Think Tank for People-Centered Development (ITSinaD) — Sudan and a nonresident fellow at the Tahrir Institute for Middle East Policy (TIMEP), focusing on a people-centric approach to economy, industry, and environment in Sudan. Recent writings include The People of Sudan Don't Want to Share Power With Their Military Oppressors (Jacobin) and Why the Burhan-Hamdok deal will not stabilise Sudan (Al Jazeera). Monifa Bandele (moderator) sits on the policy table leadership team for the Movement for Black Lives (M4BL), as well as the steering committee for the New York-based Communities United for Police Reform, representing the Malcolm X Grassroots Movement in both coalitions. Abdulsalam Mindas is an Agronomist with a Bachelor in Agricultural Studies from Sudan University of Science and Technology. He is the official spokesperson for the coordination of Ombada Resistance committees and one of the two official spokespersons for the resistance committees of greater Omdurman.
