In an effort to make newborn hearing checks a more comfortable process for babies and parents Christchurch Hospital has developed an innovation to replace cool gels. "Exhausted mothers after breastfeeding all night would be anxious that we'd wake the baby up when we were screening in the maternity units," Christchurch Hospital's Newborn Hearing Screening Programme co-ordinator Angela Deken told Andrew Dickens. Wellington Hospital is trialling cutting maternity and gynaecology beds to ease ED pressure. Staff have been told maternity overflow space will be re-purposed as 12 more Emergency Department places. NZ College of Midwives Chief Executive Alison Eddy says staff in Wellington have reported the current maternity facility is over 100 percent occupancy. "There might be spare beds today, but on a regular basis they're over capacity. And I think the other really important thing to bear in mind is that maternity is like the ED of the maternity service... it can have unpredictable demand." With presentations at UHL hitting a record high of 87,000 last year, Friends of Ennis Hospital Chair, Angela Coll, says a facility here would reduce this by 25%.

The birthing unit at Wyong has been gutted by stealth, and replaced with offices and sleeping quarters for doctors on-call, blindsiding mothers and midwives. It’s left a population of more than 350,000 with only one maternity unit, after Gosford Private Hospital announced it is closing the coast’s only private maternity service from March. Dr. Seagraves focuses on training acute care therapists to support individuals undergoing birth and pelvic surgery within 24 to 48 hours. The importance of this work becomes evident when considering that cesarean sections are the most common surgery in the United States, outnumbering knee replacements.Dr. Seagraves emphasizes the need for equitable care and highlights the alarming rates of maternal deaths in the country, particularly among black women. By expanding the role of therapists in the hospital setting, Dr. Seagraves aims to make a life-saving impact during the critical first few days after surgery. She has already trained therapists in over 60 hospitals and continues to create job opportunities for acute care therapists. In a second archive edition of the audio long read, we bring you two classic magazine articles. In the first, the then editor of the New Statesman, Kingsley Martin, visits Leon Trotsky in Mexico in 1937, where the Russian communist revolutionary was the guest of the artists Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo (here referred to only as “Rivera's wife”, though she was also Trotsky's lover, or about to be). Martin wanted to ask the exile about the show trials then being held in Moscow, in which Stalin extracted confessions of sedition from Trotskyists. Why, he asked, had his supporters not been bolder and stood their ground? He came away from the encounter, beside a “bright blue patio where the bougainvillea blazes in the sunshine”, with more questions than he brought. In the second article, the ground-breaking novelist Angela Carter writes about her experiences on a London maternity ward in 1983, shortly after becoming a mother for the first time at the age of 42. As in her fiction, she captures a strange mix of emotions and characters – the insulting doctor, the bossy nurse, the struggling NHS hospital, the bliss of breastfeeding her son, “who is doomed to love us, because we are his parents”, she writes. “The same goes for us.
