Ever since you can remember you felt something in your chest telling you to move, to love, to speak, to try day after day, you pretend you don’t hear calling. Or maybe you dismiss it as silliness or worse, but it’s there ready for you, and it will wait for you as long as you need. My name is Johnny G, and I invite you to join me on a journey of awakening as we dare to embrace our light. This is refractive. Hello out there. Welcome to a new episode of Refractive. I’m your host, Johnny Gee. Look, I’m sitting here in this amazing office and I have this enormous mug of herbal tea and I have this incredible candle basil and green tea scented candle. And look, if anybody tells you I’m not living my best life, you can tell them they are mistaken. So. I’m just full of gratitude, and I’m glad for you showing up to listen to another episode, and I hope that today this message will resonate. I had a conversation a few weeks back with a friend of mine, and he is young, queer, Hispanic. He’s soft spoken. He has a nose ring. And he was telling me about a particular incident that had happened a few days before where he walked into a supermarket. And just after passing through the front door, there was another customer who was an older guy, this older white guy, and he looked at him and in a joking, loud way said, Hey fella, it looks like you got something in your nose. So commenting on his nose ring like that. And he talked about how hard it was to. Be surprised by that comment, to be shocked into it and to realize that other people are looking at him and that he might not fit this mainstream definitionof what a. I don’t know what a a certain type of person is going to look like. And it was it was hard for him. It threw him into a bit of a of a frustration. Now, to give you some context, this friend of mine, I told you he’s Hispanic. He was raised in a traditional conservative Christian home. I said also that he is he’s not straight and that created some. I’ll just say complexity for him growing up and also white people and white culture played an outsized role in this person’s development as a kid.More so than perhaps in some other examples. And so he’s sensitive to how he fits into the white world and the mainstream world and the straight world and the conservative world. And it’s just a very loaded experience for him.And so th

Hello, everyone, and welcome to another episode of Refractive. I’m Johnny G. I was talking with a friend a few weeks ago about the space race we have today between billionaires, how Richard Branson and Jeff Bezos and Elon Musk went into this competition to see who can conquer space and how crazy it seemed that only a few decades ago, it was the world’s superpowers that were behind a space race and that today it feels like individual wealthy people can now accomplish the same things that it took countries to accomplish before. And you know, it’s easy for me to be upset about that. In fact, I was pretty disturbed by the thought of so much wealth being concentrated in the hands of a person when there are so many people who struggle. Now, as I thought, this thought and as I’m talking with my friend and complaining about these other people, you know, I realize that when I consider my spiritual values and the path that I’m on, these feelings of alarm and frustration and resentment towards these men. This doesn’t really jive with my spiritual state right now. I don’t agree with being upset about that kind of thing. It no longer serves me to wind up my anger over the behaviors of another person. Yet here I am, falling into that behavioral pattern. And as I was having this conversation, I decided to take a look within, you know, what’s really going on here? Why am I really upset about this? What is being triggered inside of me? What’s causing me to point the finger out at someone else? And, you know, in the moment of the conversation, I couldn’t come up with exactly what it might be, but I spent some time thinking about it after the fact, and I realized that there are a couple of characteristics in myself that rise to the surface when I think of this situation. There’s the idea that I have worked very hard and have wanted to be rewarded financially, and I have not achieved the wealth in my life that I one time had wanted. “And there is a disappointment around there that I worked, worked, worked and I still didn’t quite make it financially. And then there’s another part of me that wants to point my finger at these guys and say, “What are you doing to solve these issues in the world?”” When in reality, I know that I’m not doing a whole lot to resolve these issues in the world. So if I want them to do their part, what is my part and what am I doing to work towards income equality and accessibility of opportunities in all of this type of stuff that I am claiming that they contribute to as well? So there are quite a few areas of my own behavior that need some healing and nee

You know, a lot of people, we find our tribe and in our late adolescents or perhaps university years, or, you know, but no, my tribe it’s these people who crisscrossed the world shining brightly and helping other people to shine brightly. We might not realize it for years! If we aren’t staying present, pursuing our purpose gets in the way of the full, joyful life we deserve. We can get so caught up in chasing an “ideal” life purpose that sounds good on paper that we never get to actually take steps towards living it out. Daniel Mangena, best-selling author, speaker, and facilitator, reminds us that finding our purpose is pointless if we aren’t following our inner guidance all along the way. Dan describes how “purpose” is a static concept that helps us chart a path, but that our spirit, soul, or higher self doesn’t subscribe to the idea of a lifelong mission statement. Ultimately, forcing a life to fit a pre-determined or outdated purpose is frustrating, painful, and keeps us out of the flow of life and abundance. This episode, Spiritual Visions, features Marlon Fixico, at times a reluctant participant in his own fantastic spiritual path. Marlon, born into the Cheyenne and Seminole tribes, recounts the colorful, complicated, seemingly indirect path that led him from Native American spirituality, to Christianity, to a turn from Christianity, and finally to his own rich formula of spiritual living. Descended from a long line of spiritual leaders and healers, and an out gay man who wrestled with his rejection by society and religion during the AIDS epidemic, Marlon shares his experiences with sweat lodges, visions, auras, alcoholism, prophecies, a near-death experience in which he was reunited with his parents and brother, and his next spiritual chapter: becoming a Medicine Man. Today I have with me, a dear friend, Marlon Fixico. He is a descendant on both his mother and his father’s side of spiritual leaders and medicine people. He is part of the Cheyenne tribe and the Seminole tribe. How are you Marlon? Welcome to refractive.I’m feeling good today. Thanks, John.I am delighted that you are with us, you and I had an opportunity to visit not long ago. And you were telling me just a little bit about, uh, some of your spiritual history and some interesting things that happen to you. And because refractive is a show, that’s all about people kind of stepping into their most authentic selves and listening to their inner guidance and being in touch with kind of that high level, knowing of what our souls want for us in life. I thought you would be a really, um, a valuable guest on the show to share with listeners some of your experiences in that. And so I, I guess I’ll just kind of run down, uh, a basic premise of the episode today and then I’ll start digging in. Does that sound okay? That was good. All right. So you had, uh, told me when we were together, uh, just a little bit about your background and how your culture had influenced your spiritual life, your spiritual journey, the awakening that you’ve had and all of that. So I would love for you to just take us through that journey for you. What was your spiritual path like?Speaker 3 00:02:24 So, um, as you said in the introduction, I come from a long line of spiritual leaders and medicine people. Um, I would go down to the last, but it’s pretty extensive, but just suffice to say, uh, even my, uh, immediate parents, uh, were very spiritual and healers. Um, they, uh, never like advertise that, that that’s what they were that’s just too, they were, and I think that’s a mark of a true spiritual leaders. You don’t, they don’t need to tell you that they are, you just, somehow people just find out that they just know. And, uh, so I grew up a lot with my Cheyenne grandmother, my
Ever since childhood we are taught to follow societal norms at the expense of our intuitive guidance. The impact of this habit is a loss of connection with our intuition- the very guidance that saves animals from tsunamis and that tells babies not to let certain people hold them. While it does take effort, learning to use intuition is not impossible. It’s not even difficult. This episode offers practical guidance on how to re-connect with our highest wisdom in order to step into the life we were born to live. Please excuse any speech recognition errors from the transcription software. Hello everybody. I hope you are having an amazing day today. Welcome to another episode of refractive podcast. Today’s episode is all about learning to use your intuition over the past couple of years, that I’ve been on this pretty intense spiritual journey. Intuition has become such a central part of my growth learning to understand what my intuition is, what my intuition is not and learning to find the faith and the courage to do what my intuition tells me to do has been a painful, but extraordinarily rewarding, um, part of my growth journey. And it has been what unlocks chapter after chapter of incredible life. For me today, I live a life that is fairly fringe. I would say, I don’t have a traditional job. I don’t have a traditional living arrangement. I don’t have traditional relationships per se. Um, and I have to say, I don’t necessarily aspire to those things while that status, that job, that relationship was such a driving factor for me, for decades of my life today, I recognize that a lot of the striving, a lot of the painful wanting that I was experiencing was a result of feeling inadequate and needing to be soothed. And there’s certainly nothing wrong with needing to be soothed. But what I can say is that the decades of dedicating my life to getting the soothing that I felt I needed, it had dire consequences for my wellbeing on the best side of the continuum. It created a life that was unsatisfying and unfulfilling, a life that looked really good, but a life that felt empty and frustrating and lonely and confusing, confusing, because it seemed like I had everything I needed. It seemed like I had everything I could want. And yet things still felt lukewarm on a good day, lukewarm on a good day, never did I get that feeling of warm nourishing satisfaction for more than a few minutes at a time. So learning to tap into my intuition to understand what’s wrong. What am I missing? What perspective am I not grasping right now? Why am I dedicating myself to efforts that are not yielding results? What do I even want? What matters to me? Do I even know what truly matters? You know, digging into all of these aspects of my being took a willingness to listen, to intuition, to discern what might be my ego chattering away and what might be true, inner, loving guidance from my highest place. And then finding the faith, finding the courage. Once I had discerned, what parts of this messaging I received were wholesome and loving. And what parts of the messaging I received were coming from my fear based ego, uh, havin

Key has been there and a lot of listeners are there right now.Speaker 1 00:01:48 And we know that what we’re doing today doesn’t fit, but it’s terrifying to think about starting career number two, right? Because first of all, what do we even like doing? What are people going to be willing to pay us to do that makes us feel good. And is it going to meet the financial needs of our family? Is it viable? There are so many facets to consider in this decision that what happens to most people is they say, well, the career, I mean right now is not awful. I don’t really love it, but it’s it’s okay. And they don’t move because they’re too scared of all of these variables. They’re scared of the, what feels like a momentous calculation to have to get into a career that feels right. Well, I’m here to tell you that I’ve been able to shift out of a career into one that feels right. Tia has done that as well. It’s not as complicated or as difficult. It’s a big project, but it’s not possible. In fact, it’s very possible. And she has some wisdom to share with the listeners today on exactly how to do that. I can’t make any promises, but you know,Speaker 1 00:03:35 In fact, I want to tell everybody I’ve told this story,Speaker 2 00:03:38 Uh, I’m not ready, butSpeaker 1 00:03:41 I need to tell everybody how I met Kia. And when you and I were planning the episode, we decided to talk about something that’s near and dear to both of our hearts. Uh, it is the process of being in recovery and the wisdom that people in recovery are given by, uh, the literature and the traditions. Um, and by working the 12 steps and so many times, because my listeners know I’m in recovery and now they know you’re in recovery. So many, uh, so many times I’ve said to other people in recovery, boy, I just wish everyone had access to some of the tools and wisdom that we have access to because it’s truly life changing.Speaker 2 00:02:14 Absolutely. I completely agree. Um, you know, uh, for, for most of my life, I kind of felt like everybody else in the world had like this owner’s manual for life and I, I didn’t get one. And, uh, and I kind of got that owner’s manual for life once I, uh, started doing 12 step recovery. Yeah,Speaker 1 00:02:37 Absolutely. So what, what do you say? We’ll just jump right in. Let’s do it. So you and I kind of brainstorm a list of some of the nuggets of wisdom that have been most useful to us. And, um, on the top of the list, it’s about surrendering and people who are listeners of a refractive podcast and also people who’ve enjoyed the aspects of your podcast. I’m sure that they’re not, uh, they’re not going to be surpris
The Sermon on the Mount summarizes Jesus’ radical, non-religious stance on spiritual living. By encouraging us to behave meekly, not to stockpile food and money for the future, and not to fight back when someone does you wrong, it remains a radical spiritual writing even today. In this age where so many are fighting, yelling, arguing, storming, and rioting in the name of deeply held beliefs, how practical is that guidance in our world? Rich Tafel, Pastor of Church of the Holy City in Washington DC and host Johnny Guidry discuss the Sermon on the Mount and its modern-day application from a spiritual, non-religious perspective. The rat race is exhausting and all-consuming. So it’s not surprising that most of us have not stopped to closely examine a central concept directing our lives: Whose expectations are we trying to meet? College, finances, unquestioned family obligations, status, home ownership, status. These are common goals that we are conditioned to respect and strive for because…well, because it’s just “common knowledge” that they build a good life. Brian Bogert, Human Behavior Coach, Entrepreneur, Philanthropist, and all-around inspiring guy joins Refractive to discuss the auto-programming of expectations that is so common (and painful) in today’s world. Has your life been focused on what really matters to you? Have you weighed your life goals against your values, or are your goals based on an unexamined fear of struggle if certain concepts of “security” and “happiness” aren’t checked off? Have you been willing to look at painful experiences as springboards to joy, freedom, peace, growth, and beauty? This episode is all about honoring the guidance your highest self gives as the absolute shortest path to a life of serenity, fulfillment, security, and joy. So, uh, everybody just, uh, to pull back the curtain, we are talking about compulsion’s and especially compulsive eating today and how it is so prevalent in our world. We’re taught as kids that eating for comfort is a way to cope. And, you know, I mean all the way down to that hard wiring of the brain, it feels good to nourish ourselves, right? It feels good to take care of that basic needs and it can run a muck and, and become a problem later in life. I know that was the case for me. And, uh, Nina. It was the case for you too. So I didn’t realize that this was what I was doing as a child, but I got really addicted to sugar. So it was like sugar

And welcome to another episode of refractive. I’m Johnny Jean. Today, we have such a powerful episode to go through and, uh, I’m excited to introduce you to a guest. She’s a very close friend of mine. Her name is Candice Graham. I want to start this episode with an intention to send out so much love and light to all the people who are listening to refractive today. Uh, because this is an episode that deals with a topic that can be sensitive. And, uh, I just want you to know that however you feel, whether you resonate with this topic and my take on it or not, uh, I do just want to send that love and light to you. Spiritual growth is not for the weak. And while we hear people say all the time at the passing of a loved one, that we wish each other peace, and that we believe that our loved ones are in a better place. It doesn’t mean that we don’t sometimes spiral into a dark space, um, because it’s hard to process the death and the passing of someone that we’re very close to.Speaker 1 00:01:46 But when we look at the concept of spiritual growth, every single thing that happens in life, every joy pain, every moment of boredom and adventure, they’re all catalysts that are designed to gently nudge and sometimes not so gently nudge us on the path to a road of healing and to our highest calling of stepping into authentic power. So Candace, as I mentioned, she is a business owner, a community philanthropist, and a spiritual intuitive born in Baltimore. She relocated to Miami in her twenties where she put to use or education in science and in culinary arts. And she built a career and friendships that today span the globe. And I get to call myself one of those today. She’s back in Baltimore, she’s married to the love of her life. And she has t

When I look at all of the things, I think that I wasSpeaker 1 00:00:55 Born to do the number oneSpeaker 0 00:01:00 And calling that I feel is public speaking. Ever since I was a kid, I have enjoyed immensely getting on a stage and speaking before groups at people. And today I believe that ultimately, this will be the way that I serve the world. This will be the way that I offer the most help, the most support and shine, the most light out to my fellow humans. So when I get a chance to do some public speaking, it really is something that’s powerful for me. It taps into one of the most authentic and powerful places within me as a being. And I really get a lot of joy and energy out of it. So I want to share with you a keynote address. It is raw, it’s personal, it’s powerful. And I hope it helps you to question those times when you believe something that’s holding you back because often there’s a lot more to that story than what we’ve just accepted as truth. Enjoy.Speaker 1 00:02:18 Who do you think you are? I’ll tell you that even two or three years ago, I would have told you that I was a deeply damaged person. And that goes all the way back to adolescence. You see high school for me was, uh, it was extraordinary in that, uh, it was just a really brutal four years and you know, lots of kids go through bullying. And, um, but I just got to tell you that, um, I made an easy target and I look back at those dark four years, walking down the corridors, I can see the pale blue lockers. I can see the rough brick details inside the building and those indestructable vinyl floor tiles that we’ve all seen in school buildings. And, um, and it was just a really uncomfortable place for me. And, uh, everybody knew it.Speaker 1 00:03:47 And so as I went through this experience where starting at the bus stop, then on the bus, then in the school yard, then in homeroom, then in the corrido

Hello everybody.Speaker 1 00:00:45 This is Johnny G with another episode of refractive today’s topic is one that was very important to my own spiritual journey. I want to talk about how to deal with our darkness. Um, the more base qualities in us and some people call it the shadow. Um, how is it that we can come to a place of harmony between the ideals of personal and spiritual growth and the tendency that is there to lie, to cover up our shame or, uh, to take things that don’t belong to us or violence. So that’s really what we’re going to talk about today. I hope it’s going to be a topic of some value for you as well. I want to say right off the bat that this is my philosophy and it may not apply for you. I want to encourage you to take what has value and discard everything else.Speaker 1 00:01:40 What I will say is that I’ve thought a lot about this. I’ve meditated on it. I’ve read a lot about it. And they, these are some conclusions that I’ve come up with that have helped me to move forward in peace with my human nature and to stop rejecting myself rejecting these parts of myself that I used to believe were faulty. Um, but that I no longer feel that way today. And because that ability to stop rejecting parts of myself has been so valuable. I felt that it was a worthwhile episode to dig a little bit deeper into. So let’s go, we all have parts of us that we would consider to be dark. It is a part of human nature and, uh, we tend to seek to get rid of it to suppress it.

So Jamir, welcome to refractive. I’m so happy that you’re with us today,Speaker 2 00:02:00 Johnny, I am so excited to be a part of your platform. One, because you know, you touched on a couple of things earlier about having a show that is a lifestyle brand, and that’s how I look at you and you are, and you can encompass what lifestyle brands mean. And I think, you know, when I interviewed you last week or the week before a lot of listeners, and I didn’t want to tell you until we started recording said they enjoyed you so much because you provided an honest and real conversation. And so thank you for allowing me to be a part of your, your attire, beautiful platform.Speaker 1 00:02:38 Oh, absolutely. Listen. I, I, you know, I may not have the, uh, the most famous contacts in my address book. Um, but I’m very picky on who comes on my podcast and I protect what I see as the integrity of our mission here on refractive. And that’s to help people step into their own authentic power and live their best lives. Um, so many of us and I include myself in that have b
This guided meditation and visualization explores how you are best equipped to make a lasting impact on those around you. From this place of clarity, you are better able to identify your calling and key archetypes in life and then use that info to “begin with the end” and design a career, a lifestyle, and relationships that lead to that goal. Have a pen and paper ready to write down the content of the visualization as soon as possible. Like a dream, these visualizations often fade quickly. There are instructions given in the meditation on what aspects to pay attention to. Ever since you can remember, you felt something in your chest telling you to move, to love, to speak, to try day after day. You pretend you don’t hear calling, or maybe you dismiss it as silliness or worse that it’s there ready for you. And it will wait for you as long as you. My name is Johnny G and I invite you to join me on a journey of awakening. As we dare to embrace our light. This is refractive. Hello everybody. And welcome to another episode of refractive. Today. I am here with Jody axed. Jody is an executive coach based in Baltimore, and she spent the majority of her professional life working for a nonprofit that sought to end the inequities in our country’s public school systems. She decided to take that passion she had for helping other people and blend it with a home life that felt right. And so she founded her own coaching practice. Jody asked coaching today helps people who are seeking to live a more mission based life. So I’m really happy to have her here today, as we discuss a topic that I think is going to resonate with a lot of people and we decided to call it Jody, owning the turbulence. Right?Speaker 2 00:01:26 Absolutely. Welcome toSpeaker 1 00:01:28 Refractive. I’m so happy to have you here. How are you doing today?Speaker 2 00:01:32 I’m doing well. Thank you for having me, Johnny.Speaker 1 00:01:36 Um, I think we have a really nice outline of material to cover. And I mean, if there’s any time where the turbulence feels especially relevant, I think that’s nowSpeaker 2 00:01:47 Right in its simplest terms. When I think about owning the term turbulence, I think about just getting through the hard stuff. And uh, if anything, 2020 has been a lot of the hard stuff.Speaker 1 00:01:59 Yes. Everything feels hard, but you know what today? I like to say all is, well, I have my coffee, I have water. I have my place decorated for the holidays. I’m sitting in a comfortable chair talking with a friend of mine on zoom right now. I mean, what else do I want? It’s like the universe just handed it to me on a silver platter.Speaker 2 00:02:25 Uh, well, your space is beautiful. Looks like you’re all ready for the holidays, which is really exciting. We just finished deliberating Hanukkah and our house. Um, for me, the only other thing that’s going to make this perfect is that my kids and dog don’t interrupt us. So we’ll see if we can get through that. This is about owning the turbulence.Speaker 1 00:02:46 Right. So talk to me about the framework that you see for this episode.Speaker 2 00:02:51 Yeah. So when I think about owning the Chevy Lyndon, as I said, sort of getting through the hard stuff, it takes me back to the reason we landed on the word turbulence is it just takes me back to that when you’re sitting in an airplane and it starts to get bumping and you just think to yourself, Oh my God, when is this going to end?

Young Tom Coderre had secrets. Painful ones. Growing up in a Catholic, political family in Rhode Island, with aspirations of elected office and a life in the spotlight, there seemed no room left for one major aspect of his life, a part of him that refused to sit quietly in the corner: his homosexuality. Balancing his outer world with his inner reality caused him a great deal of pain- a pain Tom managed through alcohol and other substances. While on the outside Tom's life looked ideal- he was a Rhode Island State Senator at 25, then the Chief of Staff for the Rhode Island Senate President, this denial of his true nature brought his career crashing down around him, leaving him with no home, no career, and not even a will to live. Through the world of 12 step-based recovery, Tom relaunched his life and today focuses both publicly and personally on helping others who are running from themselves and their problems with the aid of alcohol and drugs. By being willing to look inside himself and make peace with what he found, Tom opened the door to a more serene way of life and a life-long adventure of self-acceptance. Join Johnny G and Tom in this important discussion around how to look in the mirror- and really see. You pretend you don't hear it calling, or maybe you dismiss it as silliness or worse, but it's there, ready for you and it will wait for you as long as you need. My name is Johnny G and I invite you to join me on a journey of awakening as we dare to embrace our light. This is refractive. Hello. Hello, good evening. And welcome to Refractive. This is Johnny G. over the past year, I've come to believe that protecting my serenity is my number one job, and it falls above earning money. It falls above finding food and shelter and relationships. Protecting my serenity unlocks the resources that allow me to step into the flow of life and effortlessly receive all the care, the nourishment and the abundance that I need. It allows me to be more loving and more present as a person- unlocking the door of serenity is a foundation for accessing my birthright of magnificence. So that's a lot to jump right into, right? We've only been talking for a few seconds on the episode, but the purpose of today's episode is to look how surrendering to the current moment is an entry way to accessing serenity and therefore an entryway to accessing the best possible life that exists for me. The mythology we have often accepted as a culture is that we have to try as hard as we can to have an amazing life. We have to overcome obstacles. And when we aren't given what we want, we should go out and get it for ourselves. We have to fight for glory. We have to fight for security. We have to fight for recognition. We have to push past the pain and grab life by the horns and forge our own future. I don't believe that that needs to be the path forward any longer. I can't tell you why. I don't know what changed, but I see a different perspective on that now. And I see other people also adopting this different perspective and this different paradigm. It is now the era of growing through joy. So in this mindset that I mentioned, go out and work super hard to build the best life you can. In this Mindset. We constrict ourselves in a thousand boxes of, should we have ideals. We have concepts that we feel beholden to, and you know, there's nothing wrong with achievement. In fact, by living a life of intention, by having clarity around the present moment and being mindful and surrendering to that present moment, because surrender is the key word of this episode, the quality of any effort I undertake improves when I am mindful, aware and cl

This is Johnny G and today I am delighted to present to you a dear friend and an inspiring individual that I've had the pleasure of meeting lately. Dr. Karen Barnard, Karen was born in South Africa and at an early age of 15 years, she was encouraged by a school teacher to pursue a career in medicine. Karen knew that she felt driven to live a life of service of some kind, and this happened to align well with what she saw for her future. So at the age of 18 in South Africa, Karen began her training as a doctor, finished medical school and moved to the United States. At that point, she trained here as a general internist and then subsequently chose endocrinology as an area of specialization. After a 30 year career, Karen felt intuition, leading her to a change of career. She knew that she still continued to desire a life of service of some sort, and she landed on life coaching.Speaker 1 00:01:55 She began training as a life coach in 2019. This is where I had the pleasure of meeting her and she formerly left that 30 year career in June of 2020 to pursu

This is Johnny G with refractive. If you're familiar with refractive and its values, you know that right? Speaker 3 00:00:48 One of my guiding principles and you hear it a lot in my content is aim your light. I mentioned this phrase fairly often with clients as well, because it references the immeasurable power of creation that I believe lies within each person. And that creative power is available for use. Whenever we agree to live by our gut or live by our intuition. In fact, the reason I chose the name refractive for my organization for my practice is the quality of each person being like a prism to receive in energy and then transform bend an aim that energy, as we put it back out to the world, I have a treat for you today. I'll be introducing you to Stan PI Troskey. He is an individual I've met some years ago here in DC. Stan has molded a life of love and joy for himself by listening to that inner sense of knowing and by stepping in faith and courage that his inner guidance was worth following he's someone who indeed does aim his light. Speaker 3 00:02:08 And he's someone that I deeply respect from my perspective. Stan is actively responsible for his place in the world, and he is responsible for the energy he puts out to others. This is a big reason why I wanted to introduce him too. The refractive world here over stand's long professional life. He has risen entitled in responsibility, adding prestige through a solid handful of sectors. He was an officer in the armed forces. He was a federal employee in the executive branch. He was a psychotherapist with a private practice, and that's just to name a few phases of his career. But beneath this life story, a both officer and gentlemen, Stan says that he always knew he would be a full time artist. And throughout his life, he carved out time space, energy resources for that passion. So unlike many of us, and I really speak for myself who had been drawn to a creative field, but have settled in the past for a more realistic or stable or classic type of career. Speaker 3 00:03:20 Stan told me that his earlier roles were not chosen at the expense of his love of art. Rather, they were deliberately selected as a part of his life path and they led him step by step into the life he lives today, where he can in fact, devote his time and energy to art. Today's Stan operates his own art studio and his own gallery. And just like so many times before he is exactly where he feels he should be now his life as an artist. Isn't the only example of Stan's willingness to say yes to the universe. He also said yes to love and not long ago, Stan followed his gut yet again and married his husband and having had the privilege to meet stand's husband. I can assure you, they are as lovely and inspiring a couple as I've ever met. So with that said, let's get to it. Hi Stan. Good afternoon. How are you doing today? Speaker 4 00:04:27 Oh, good afternoon, John. And thank you for those kind and generous words. Um, I'm having a lovely day

This is Johnny G. Welcome to refractive. Today's episode is about how to elevate your resume. I was an HR director and uh, I spent 16 of my years involved in all aspects of HR from training to recruiting to benefits and compensation. And I have to say I've been surprised how mysterious resumes still seem to people. So since this was something that I was an expert in in my last career, I thought I would share with you some tips on how to make your resume friendly to a hiring manager. There are certain types of formatting and content that make a resume difficult to process and when someone is going through a stack of 20 or 30 resumes, anything that makes it less simple to process is going to place you at a disadvantage. So that's what we're going to focus on today. I do want to warn you upfront, the transitions from topic to topic won't be very smooth because I did sit down and draft out simply a list of the most important aspects to cover. So we will be hopping from topic to topic and I hope you'll bear with me as we do that. So let's dive right in. You know I'm going to quickly glance over some things that might be common sense, but they're important to underlie. First of all, don't lie. Um, a lot of hiring managers do check references and it's important that you don't lie about your length of employment, your title, your responsibilities, or your achievements as well. I also want to encourage you to stick to the common length guideline of one resume page per 10 years of professional experience. If you want to vary from that, it's up to you. But again, um, it does, it does get noticed if you have an unusually long resume. I also think it's a good time to point out that there are certain industries that have their own resume guidelines. If that applies to you, you already know what I'm talking about. So take this with a grain of salt. If you work for the federal government, if you are in visual media or some other type of role where resume formatting and content are a little bit special, you know, I feel that brief employment generally doesn't have much value to add on a resume. If you work somewhere two, three, or four months, it's probably not worth putting on your resume. You haven't even finished your training and onboarding yet and you most likely weren't fully productive yet. So it doesn't give me as a hiring manager information as to what you're capable of. What it does is indicate that you might be a flight risk. So I don't recommend putting brief employment. I've met some applicants who were hired into very prestigious companies and so they wrongly assumed that even if they work there for three, four or five months, um, it was advantageous to show that they were hired by XYZ company and that is not generally the case. I speak for me, but I do feel that that's a pretty solid piece of advice. I want to talk as well about parallel structure and when I say parallel structure, I'm talking about consistency in the way your resume is written and in the way your resume looks and is formatted. I'll go down a few points here that I think will really help you to have a resume that looks pl
