This week I’m starting to feel a little insane but thank GOD I'm joined by comedian Dan Perlman who grounds me with an episode that is literally so good?? Dan is telling me the story of his most formative middle school crush and a haunting comment heard in passing that literally hurts MY feelings. That sounds dramatic but it's middle school so, duh!! We’re talkin: when embarrassment hurts more than rejection, date spying in childhood and adulthood, building up walls, relationship imbalances, will Rebecca one day sext?, Now That's What I Call Music, retreating and regressing, remember just being around someone not doing anything and wasn't that nice?, the right and wrong lessons to take from being treated poorly, and so much more...did I mention this episode is so good?! Check out Dan’s new special EMERGENCY CONTACT out May 1st wherever you listen to stuff! Nolan and Jack talk at length about NOW: That's What I Call Music series and talk at length about a website Nolan found called Boomer Boost. We talked about Crane Coffee, and the Jack Off line of clothing stores. Had some great listener reviews as well. Break audio is an insane ad for one of the Boomer Boost Nootropics, I think its called Clarity of Mind but it is crazy as fucking shit and not an ad, DO NOT BUY THIS PRODUCT. This week I'm delighted to welcome Laura Lexx as my guest to discuss her first ever gig. Laura's recently appeared on Season 14 of Live at the Apollo on BBC and Comedy Central UK's Roast Battle and if you've not heard of her yet then here's the perfect introduction. In this fun chat we explore her love for Boyzone and reliving the Now That's What I Call Music compilation albums before diving into how a background in improv lead to a career in stand-up comedy. Looks Unfamiliar is a podcast in which writer and occasional broadcaster Tim Worthington talks to a guest about some of the things that they remember that nobody else ever seems to. This is a collection of highlights from shows forty nine to fifty four, featuring Suzy Norman on Hugo The Hippo, Richard Littler on the episode of The Waltons with a Poltergeist, Gary Bainbridge on Radio City's Jack Your Body parody Deadly Boring, Tim Worthington on It's A Shame by Kris Kross, Phil Catterall on the On The Hour Christmas Special, Ben Baker on Now - The Christmas Album, Mitch Benn on Two-Stage Self-Assembly Ice Cream Cones, and Darrell Maclaine on Blockbusters Bubblegum. Along the way we'll be finding out what Richard Stilgoe rhymed with ‘poltergeist’, speculating on what local radio’s obsession with records with ‘Of The’ in the title was all about, recounting how the cast of The Sullivans got caught up in a South-East turf war, debating Steve Ditko’s role in the invention of Cornetto, going to see a time-travelling Candy Flip, investigating how the ‘Hand Jive’ era of Blockbusters was entirely illicitly funded by holes in grandparents’ pockets, revisiting Peter Skellern’s ‘Lurpak Years’, lamenting the terrible fate of the Breakaway theme music, and unveiling our new foolproof scheme for alluding to now-disgraced celebrities without actually naming them. Plus there's also a bit of extra chat with Richard about an unusual BBC showing of 2001: A Space Osyssey, and something you might not have heard before - Tim on The Zeitgeist Tapes talking to Emma Burnell and Steve Fielding about the long-forgotten Clangers Election Special Vote For Froglet! You can find the full editions of all of these shows - and plenty more besides - at http://timworthington.org/
We start 2020 losing our first episode of the year, so here is the abridged version of our albums of 2019,Now That's What I Call Music 8, and the tenth anniversary of Vampire Weekend's Contra.
Looks Unfamiliar is a podcast in which writer and occasional broadcaster Tim Worthington talks to a guest about some of the things that they remember that nobody else ever seems to. Joining Tim for a special Christmas edition is writer, broadcaster and quizmaster Ben Baker, who’s looking back to the original Now - The Christmas Album from 1985, which has been quietly consigned to Christmas Past for all manner of reasons - some of them more 'problematic' than others. Along the way we'll be revealing the identity of 'The Anti-Tim Song', debating what we would have put on a second volume, exchanging some very frank opinions on Fairytale Of New York, and unveiling our new foolproof scheme for alluding to now-disgraced celebrities without actually naming them. You can find more editions of Looks Unfamiliar at http://timworthington.org/
When we discussed "Amnesia" (Now 39), we touched upon the idea that Chumbawamba have a unique story. Here, we look more closely at said musical tale, from anarcho-punk origins to the later folk years. Mostly, though, we focus on Chumbawamba's unlikely pop career, including the smash hit "Tubthumping", "Top of the World (Olé, Olé, Olé)", "Timebomb", "She's Got All the Friends" and the sublime "(Someone's Always Telling You How to) Behave". Are we stretching the premise of this format by arguing that any of those songs were likely to appear on a Now That's What I Call Music! album? Sure. But then Chumbawamba are one of the least likely bands you're ever likely to discover in the first place, so why not?

We spoke about Prince's randy extravaganza "Gett Off" before (as featured on Now 20), and here we look at the tiny purple genius in a bit more detail. Sadly, Prince only featured on one other Now That's What I Call Music album, with "Thunder" on Now 22, but here we fantasise about which other tracks we wish had appeared. And just generally gush about how much we love Prince. Prince is good.

As we're still working ourselves up to a second season, we're filling in with a few podcasts about artists we've already discussed. In particular, we're looking at artists we might not see again very soon due to not appearing on many Now That's What I Call Music! albums. To start with, we're giving an extra listen to Heaven 17, as featured on Now 1 (Temptation), Now 4 (Sunset Now) and Now 23 (Temptation - Brothers in Rhythm Remix). Plus, we pick a Heaven 17 song we wish had featured on a Now compilation, because it's our podcast and you can't stop us.
Pop music, it is quite literally popular. So the first series of Is That What I Call Music? is done, but is that going to stop us chatting about pop music? Of course not! And with Eurovision on the horizon, we decide to see what Europe's premier singing competition has contributed to the Now That's What I Call Music series. Pickings are thin, but we spend time with the likes of Love City Groove, Gina G, Imaani, Precious and Loreen. Plus, we weigh up the UK's prospects at Eurovision 2019 with Michael Rice's "Bigger Than Us" (spoiler: we don't stand a snowball's chance in hell).
To finish up the first series of Is That What I Call Music? – a podcast all about the Now That's What I Call Music! albums – we're listening to part two of 1998's Now That's What I Call Music! 39. Can it possibly live up to the first half? Do we have anything new to say about Robbie Williams? How well has Aqua's "Barbie Girl" aged? And is "No Way No Way" the single worst single ever released? Find out all this and more in the episode! Also featuring a cover of Catatonia's "Mulder and Scully" that has been put through a Frank Sidebottom shaped wringer.
In this episode, Jim is joined by Kenya to discussing NOW That's What I Call Music 39. Discussion includes possible product placement in a song, dance music becoming a bigger part of the series, Dance Central, Pitbull vs Lindsay Lohan, and more.
For want of new ideas, we return once more to the Now That's What I Call Music! Trivia Box, asking one another questions as a loose pretext for talking about pop music. This time, we take in both the tragedy of losing Amy Winehouse's immense talent and an entirely different kind of tragedy in Hale & Pace's Comic Relief charity single "The Stonk". Awkward tonal shift ahoy!
Jumping ahead to 1998, in this episode we listen to the first disc of Now That's What I Call Music! vol. 39. From pop titans to indie weirdos, this CD has a little bit of everything on offer, including a blinder of a final track courtesy of Jarvis Cocker and Pulp. So join us for a ride that takes in the Spice Girls, All Saints, Hanson, Space, Janet Jackson and, inevitably, Robbie Williams, plus a cover version of "Insane" by Texas.
NOW That's What I Call Podcasting 38 Guest Starring: Kenshin1913 It's the first new show since January. The fourth episode of "Is That What I Call Music?", a podcast about the Now That's What I Call Music! albums. We're sticking with Now That's What I Call Music! 20 from 1991 this time, as it's time to try cassette/CD 2. Can it possibly live up to the weirdness of part one? And will we get sued by Don McLean for our thoughts on "American Pie"? Have a listen and find out! Also featuring a banjo cover of "Sit Down" by James.
Now That's What I Call Music! 5. Released in 2018 to accompany the 100th Now! compilation, it profiles 100 artists that have appeared on the albums over the years. But what secrets does the book reveal? This time, we discuss artists including Tina Turner, The Human League, The Cure and fictional self-help guru Will Powers (the '80s were a weird time for pop music). Also featuring a cover of Roberta Flack and Peabo Bryson’s “Tonight I Celebrate My Love”.
In episode 3, we dive into the fascinating history of the Now That's What I Call Music! compilation CD series, we wonder what goes on in the "aeries" of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, and we learn a little bit about psychopaths and how to make one. Heather and Ramsey take it all the way back to 2002 as we see what was considered music back then with "Now That's What I Call Music! 9." What's on a "Now" album today? Who buys them? Why? Where was it the most likely that one would hear a song by Petey Pablo according to Heather? And a variety of epiphanies are reached regarding the "Now" series! All this and MORE! Don't want to end the fun? Check out our Spotify playlists for more music choices from Ramsey and Heather. Wanna get a shout-out on a future episode? Give us a rating on iTunes! The first demi-episode of the Is That What I Call Music? Podcast, which we'll release between the main podcasts. In these episodes, we will ask each other questions from the Now That's What I Call Music! Trivia Box, then have a chat about the songs/artists on the cards. Here, for instance, we discuss a '90s boy band cover version of a Pet Shop Boys song and a mega-hit from 2010 perhaps best known for having a video in which the artist sprays whipped cream from a specially modified bikini. Yup.
It's finally here, the end of era, just the second disc of NOW That's What I Call Music! Volume 16 to negotiate before we can round off the 1980s in style with our very own awards ceremony! In a disc bursting with 18 prime pop platters we are treated to a 'sexy' slowdown and Jimmy Somerville teaches us how to say goodbye in several languages. Plus, the Gary Preservation Society draw first blood, Herbie Hide gets knocked out and we talk VR porn!
The first proper episode of "Is That What I Call Music?", a podcast about the Now That's What I Call Music! albums. And to celebrate this beginning, we go back to where it all started: 1983's Now That's What I Call Music, the first compilation in the now long-running series. This episode covers record/cassette one, featuring artists including Phil Collins, Bonnie Tyler, Heaven 17 and Culture Club. Also featuring an instrumental cover of Men Without Hat’s “The Safety Dance”.
We're rounding off volume 14 of NOW That's What I Call Music! by looking at the second disc, with yet more house music and a sprinkling of SAW's fairydust on a Page 3 idol! As well as regular features Around the World and Off the Record, we discuss Simon Climin', rejoice at the denouement of a NOW stalwart and Jacob reveals his deep hatred for a British musical theatre icon!
Time to pop on some cycling shorts and get moving, we've got at least 500 miles to cover here as we begin to reflect on the musical landscape of 1988 and wrap up the 'XIII'-th volume of NOW That's What I Call Music! with a second disc which hails the arrival of the moral panic-baiting genre, Acid House! This week we talk Ian Rush's 'tache, find out what happens in Barlow's lock-up and discuss what it's like to be a 'Gamber'!
In this week's episode we're taking on the first disc of NOW That's What I Call Music! Vol. 13; and with 1989 just over the horizon, the only way is up! Barlow teaches us how to play 'Pilchards', we reach out to those forced into pop stardom against their will and Kent takes Barlow on a trip to Wollongong!
During this episode we see the NOW That's What I Call Music series start to look like what we know and love today as a major rebrand occurs. We talk through early 90s favourites and also see Robbie Williams’ first Now appearance.
Part two on our journey through NOW That's What I Call Music and we start to see the first spinoffs from the main series. Plus we talk the future format 'CD'.
To celebrate the 101st edition of Now That's What I Call Music and the 100 song mega compilation Now That’s What I Call Now, Mark Goodier sits down with a distinguished panel of guests including Chris Moyles, Howard Jones, and more to discuss what NOW means to them. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Our journey through the NOW That's What I Call Music! series beginning at number 1 as we start picking our favourite tracks from every release in the main compilation series.
This week we'll be wrapping up NOW That's What I Call Music vol. 7, looking at Disc 2 and the VHS. We find ourselves mining a rich seam of mid-eighties balladry and early Hip Hop, including an entry in the infamous Roxanne Wars! Along the way we discuss Coco Rocks, meet The Osbourne's meat recipient and ask 'what animals are Queen'?
This week we're wrapping up NOW That's What I Call Music vol.6 and looking at Disc 2. We're joined once again by David Kent, who tells us about his online business portfolio. We also discuss the best name in pop, Post Hardcore vs New Wave, Only Fools and Horses; and Jacob covers himself in glory, twice!
We've made a quantum leap forward almost a full year, to August 1985 and the release of NOW That's What I Call Music vol. 5... Is it even possible to cram a year's worth of music on to two LPs? Turns out it can be done! By leaving out many, many good songs. But don't worry, there's still plenty to chew on, from a lover with a career-killing name to a wedding dance staple... of sorts, all with A View To A Review. We'll also take a look back over 1984 and find out who the biggest winners and losers were in the world of Pop!
It's time to wrap up NOW That's What I Call Music vol. 4 and throw on the second disc! We're waving goodbye to 1984, glad to be alive and relatively unscathed from the year of Big Brother, Doublespeak and evil Milk Snatchers. Before we leave we finally abandon the imposter Michael Kent to an uncertain fate, stranded in the past, leaving us free to discuss ghost sex, test out some theories with Tesla and narrowly avoid dying of shock when we discover the last song is... actually good!? There's definitely something strange going on, who you gonna call?

This week we take on BTO royalty and totally-real human, Tal Bachman, and the totally-normal story behind his hit single “She’s So High.” We address the overbearing wholesomeness of 90’s pop rock in general and resolute niceguy-ness in these lyrics, take a dive into Michael Muñoz’s history with NOW Thats What I Call Music, and explain why KIDZ BOP is objectively the superior franchise We also discover the shocking truth behind the name “Bachman,” dissect a music video that cant quite pull the trigger on its hyper-literal concept, and I present a thoeory about the lyrics that involves neither the drugs, class barriers, or nice-guyism that Tal would have you believe. Music We Like: The Stills’ “Logic Will Break Your Heart,” Hot Water Music’s “Light It Up," and Metz’ “Strange Peace,”
