Hi Janet! Listen, last week we talked about the audacity of White Men and this week we're basically talking about the exact same thing because it's the Media (+ Justin Timberlake lol). Welcome to the second installment of SCANDALGUST...the month where the weather is hot but the scandals are like the inside of a pepperoni Pizza Roll fresh out of the oven at your parents' Super Bowl Halftime Party in the early 2000s.Picture this...you're 7. You just got inside from a long day of running unsupervised through your cul-de-sac with a popsicle DRIPPING down your arm in the hot sun and now you're all sticky. Great. Now picture your sticky finger reaching for the remote to turn on Super Bowl XXXVIII (can we talk about how fucking annoying roman numerals are) when your father quite positively clotheslines you on his way to turn off the TV because of AN INNOCENTLY FREED NIPPLE on an even MORE innocent pop star named JANET JACKSON. Queen. In today's episode Quill recaps the dramatic and misogynistic response to a wardrobe malfunction on the national stage. If Justin's gonna have you naked by the end of this song then we're going to have you FIRED UP in red hot feminist rage by the end of this episode. Cameos include:Our four nipplesJanet's one nippleThe void-like lack of damage to Justin Timberlake's career post-nipple gateAn ironically OUT of sync sense of accountability from NSYNC's finest The media being MEAN, MEAN BITCHES, only caring about controlling women's bodies and taking away gay rightsScooter Braun's dirty-looking upper lip area In Janet's name we praise,Bad Planning (badplanningpod@gmail.com)

Daniel Koppen (born September 12, 1979) is a former American football center. He played college football for Boston College, and was drafted by the New England Patriots in the fifth round of the 2003 NFL Draft. New England Patriots (2003–2011)Koppen entered the 2003 NFL Draft following college and was selected by the New England Patriots in the fifth round with the 164th overall choice. Koppen entered the 2003 season as the backup to Pro Bowl center Damien Woody; however, Woody missed Week 2 with an injury, giving an opportunity for Koppen to start his first NFL game. Woody returned the next week, but a season-ending injury to starting guard Mike Compton allowed Woody to slide to the guard position and Koppen to start the remainder of the season at center, including the Patriots' Super Bowl XXXVIII win over the Carolina Panthers. Following the season, Woody signed with the Detroit Lions, leaving Koppen as the Patriots' starting center. Koppen started all 16 games for the Patriots in 2004, earning his second Super Bowl ring in as many seasons with the Patriots' victory over the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl XXXIX. Koppen was released during final cuts prior to the 2012 season on August 31, 2012.[4]Denver Broncos (2012–2013)On September 10, 2012, Koppen agreed to a 1-year deal with the Denver Broncos.[5] On July 28, 2013, Koppen suffered a torn ACL during training camp and missed the entire 2013 season. John recalls the first time a guest dropped a swear word on his live show, and the conversation goes to what is allowed and what isn't-and why. Liu Yan recalls Janet Jackson's "wardrobe malfunction" and how mainstream media is still the only place that is devoid of "The Seven Dirty Words" while with the flick of button, you can jump headlong into curse word central on one of a hundred channels. John recalls a few guests from his many years in radio, including a woman who literally spent six months living in her bed, to the most impressive and unforgettable guest-Capt. Jerry Coffee-who was one of the longest held POWS in Vietnam, and how one show with Capt. Coffee changed a listener's life. Finally, John and Liu Yan talk about their first real jobs-and how certain habits can last a lifetime.
Who doesn't remember the infamous 'wardrobe malfunction' at Super Bowl XXXVIII in Houston? Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake completely overshadowed a really good game with a performance that ended in a massive FCC nightmare. As we get ready for another Super Bowl, let's travel back to 2004 and the events that led up to Nipplegate and the fallout that followed. Damita Jo is the eighth studio album by American singer Janet Jackson. It was released on March 22, 2004 by Virgin Records. The album takes its title from Jackson's middle name. Its music incorporates pop rock, electro, house, and hip hop styles, in addition to R&B. Its concept is based on Jackson's alternate personalities, exploring themes involving intimacy, monogamy, love, and dance. Its production is derived from producers including Dallas Austin, Cathy Dennis, Scott Storch, BAG & Arnthor, Arnthor Birgisson, Rich Harrison, Télépopmusik, Just Blaze, and Kanye West; in addition to Jackson and Jam & Lewis.Recorded over eighteen months, it was the longest Jackson spent on a project. Jackson sought to find producers who identified with her emotions, intending "hard-hitting dance music". Producers declared it "a really sexy record" which was bold, fun, and positive. Multiple personae portrayed include the obstinate "Damita Jo" and lascivious "Strawberry Bounce". Jackson stated that they were "another way to express and expose a deeper part of me", comparing her writing process to that of a novelist; inventing characters with independent personalities. Jackson claimed that the aforementioned characters "absolutely" live inside of her, stating it "feels wonderful" to release them.Prior to its completion, Jackson performed a medley of hits at the Super Bowl XXXVIII halftime show. The performance ended in Jackson's breast being exposed by surprise guest Justin Timberlake. Conglomerates involved with the broadcast who received massive fines by the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC), including Viacom and CBS, and subsidiaries MTV and Infinity Broadcasting, enforced a blacklist of Jackson's singles and music videos, although Timberlake was unaffected. The album received generally favorable reviews. Jackson replied to critics focusing on the album's suggestive content and Super Bowl incident in place of the music itself, stating she was "fascinated" by these interpretations, expressing concern for society's need to often place others within a specific sexual category. It garnered Jackson's second highest first-week sales in the US, and was certified platinum. Damita Jo sold over two million copies worldwide. It received a Grammy Award nomination for Best Contemporary R&B Album. Jackson was awarded several career accolades throughout its promotion. The album spawned four singles: "Just a Little While", "I Want You", "All Nite (Don't Stop)" and "R&B Junkie".
On this month’s FaceLifted episode of High-Dere, Ian & Joe discuss death of the old and birth of the new; evolving lives, stories, entertainment and crimes that make up this crazy-ass world we exist in.Apparently Ian feels that to see his stolen stuff again would be akin to THE Disciples seeing Christ again after his death...or seeing Superman return to life after HIS death. Crazy! Then we dive into the death of creative productivity due to technical software issues and how they completely wreak havoc on our emotions, much like the Pepsi Fire that wreaked havoc on Michael Jackson's hair. ;)We then hear about a BLOW-UP fight that happened between Ian & Joe and learn why High-Dere is important to them & why it’s crucial to have it stick around.THEN we look at the hypocrisy that exists between the widely praised J-Lo and Shakira headlined Super Bowl LIV halftime show and the hubbub created by the (tame by comparison) wardrobe malfunction involving Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake for Super Bowl XXXVIII.We wind down the show by talking about some incredibly interesting DocuSeries presented by Netflix. Most of which deal with HEAVY topics like Murder, rage, the opioid crisis and Nazis. Almost as fun as having to be the person who tells a sibling that their childhood hero died. Yeah......And just as a reminder, keep your eyes open. All people in power "Poke the Bear" in one way or another; they've all done it. That's no reason for an entire half of the country to completely unravel just to defeat the other half of the counrty. We're all in this together, right? We’re sorry, Miss Jackson. For nearly two decades, Janet Damita Jo Jackson was one of the world’s most reliable hitmakers, but her reign came to a complete halt after the Super Bowl XXXVIII halftime show and its infamous “wardrobe malfunction.” After a stunning career spent deliberately pushing boundaries, somebody else took it a step too far and she suffered the consequences. However, her legacy of pop masterpieces and powerful feminism was never forgotten. She kept living her life, putting out terrific albums, and never relinquishing control. Janet may have been less visible for a while there, but she never truly went away - and now that she’s been nominated to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for the third time, we’re going to do whatever we can to make sure she gets in, including making sure all our listeners know how excellent Control is. We hope you enjoy this as much as we do. See complete show notes on our website.

It’s not just us: the story of social media has turned dark, and the leaders of the big platform companies are scrambling to fix it. Drew and Jon consider the prurient origins (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_Bowl_XXXVIII_halftime_show_controversy#Legacy) of social media and wonder whether it’s possible for these companies to turn around. Zuckerberg and Dorsey are touting lofty new values (https://www.bloomberg.com/news/features/2017-09-21/mark-zuckerberg-s-political-awakening) and shiny new metrics (https://twitter.com/jack/status/969234284610428928?s=21), but when you really look at the recent controversies (https://500ish.com/foot-in-mouthbook-c35a64cd9341), it kinda seems ridiculous to think new, hand-wavey stats will save them. Former Viking left tackle Todd Steussie joined the show to talk about life, football, and his latest venture into the analytics business. We chatted about memories of the 98 Vikings, stories of the late-great Kory Stringer, his thoughts on Adrian Peterson, and the value of players educating themselves for their inevitable post-football career. Steussie -- a 14-year NFL veteran who spent the bulk of his career with the Minnesota Vikings and also the Panthers, Buccaneers, and Rams -- was the 19th overall pick of the 1994 NFL Draft and went on to become a two-time Pro Bowler (1997, 1998) and started Super Bowl XXXVIII for the Panthers. Since retiring from the game, Steussie has become co-founder & Executive Vice-President of PotentiaMetrics as well as President of PotentiaPro, a developer of next-gen NFL outcomes and information systems. Bringing a "Moneyball" approach to pro football like has already become widely accepted by franchises in the NBA and MLB. Janet was signed to a five record deal with A&M Records in the early 80's. After the first two albums failed at radio and in the clubs, A&M was none too thrilled with their decision and even less excited about Janet going back into the studio for her third album in 1985. Seeking to take control away from her domineering parents (both personally and professionally), Janet hooked up with music producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis of “The Time” fame. The end result was a more mature sound with a harder, funkier edge than anything she had ever done. That album was the mega-selling “Control.” With no less than six top ten singles spawned from the album, “Control” set the stage for a new Jackson family superstar. By the time she released “Rhythm Nation” in late 1989, Janet sealed the deal and all bets were off; she had now entered into the stratosphere of worldwide mega-entertainers. Spawning seven top ten singles, “Rhythm Nation” was a mixture of hard-hitting dance songs with a serious undertone and fun carefree songs that mixed well with Janet's shy and easygoing personality. By the time she performed “Black Cat” at the MTV Music Awards, we began to witness a slimmer and more confident Janet. Once “Love Will Never Do Without You” was released, Janet's image had morphed from a tough little girl to a full-out sexy beautiful woman. With the transformation completed, she released a greatest hits album and signed a new multi-million dollar record deal with Virgin Records. With a purported $80 million dollar contract in her mid-twenties, Janet was the highest-paid artist in the industry, until Mariah Carey left Sony several years later. From there, Janet went on to have great success with her releases. That is until the incident involving a “wardrobe malfunction” at Super Bowl XXXVIII in early February of 2004. While I'm not going to rehash the incident with her and Justin Timberlake here, the publicity stunt caused her record sales to plummet and a backlash at radio. No matter what you might think of the “nipple-gate,” controversy, Janet is a bona fide superstar worthy of her inclusion in the Diva Hall of Fame. This set was originally posted on November 17, 2009. Since there are no current plans to update Miss Jackson's original induction, I thought it was appropriate to go back and revisit her original induction into the Diva Hall of Fame for those fans that missed it the first time around.
