This week, we're welcoming back a One Hit Thunder favorite—indie rap sensation Spose. He has brought with him the deepest cut we've discussed in ages: Bran Van 3000's "Drinking in L.A.," a song that soared in Canada but made only a small ripple in the States. Yet, for Spose, hailing from Maine where the song's melodies permeated the airwaves, it left an impression on him that remains even decades later. Join us as we give this song a ring-a-ding-ding and decide if more people should have taken a ride in the Bran Van. If you like the show, be sure to rate, review, and subscribe. I'm a big Bran Van fan. I've seen some talk that it actually was that the Kings played so well and the Oilers weren't bad. Not at all the way I saw it, I thought that was a total egg laid by the Oilers in a 4-0 loss to the Kings Saturday night. Plus...Jake Guentzel.
Jay and Penny Lover discuss what's been yanking their sonic cranks as of late. Repeat guest Don throws in his two cents as well. We don't understand it. Oh, what's come over us? But we're not gonna worry. No. Not anymore. Because when men are in love, we've only got one story. That's why our love is lost somewhere in your kiss. When we're lost and alone, it's you that we miss. With a love like yours, it's hard to resist. Oh-oh-oh. Sonic contributions to the sixteenth bonus episode of Lightnin' Licks Radio podcast includes: Nick Kroll, Jason Moustakas, DJ Nu Mark, Jurassic Five, Dave Matthews Band, SAULT, The Millennium, Emitt Rhodes, Jay Dilla, Slum Village, Doc Illingsworth, Tortoise, Burt Bacharach, Sonic Youth, Inflo, Tilla, Sleaford Mods, Viagra Boys, John Hartford, The Runaways, Motley Crue, Zhane, Weakened Friends, Adam & the Ants, Height Keech, De La Soul, Purple Mountains, Arrested Development, Nino Rota, Arc of All, Stillwater, Mac DeMarco, Dilly Dally, Big Thief, Neil Young & Crazyhorse, MJ Lenderman, Phish, Prince Paul, Chicago, Instant Funk, Young Holt Limited, Etta James, The Jam, The Specials, Elastica, Chemical Brothers, and Lionel Richie. Born in Buffalo NY, his father wore two hats as pianist and conductor of the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra. He would seat Dave in the orchestra pit during performances as early as seven years old. Dave's brother Robert would soon become a multiple Grammy-nominated classical percussionist, and his sister an accomplished rock/soul singer. Shortly after his father's passing when Dave was 10, he suddenly took an interest in the piano that was sitting idly in the living room. Osmosis? Within six months Dave had mastered the C Sonata by Mozart, and began an obsession with XTC, Herbie Hancock, Yes, Todd Rundgren and of course, DEVO. Pretty diverse for an 11 year old. He clearly made the right choice. By the age of 17, he was one of the top keyboardists in his hometown, winning multiple awards consistently for seven years. Finally the big break came, when Robby Takac of the Goo Goo Dolls called and left a simple message from sunny LA: “you wanna come out and tour with us for a year?” In a matter of one day Dave went from playing in front of 300 in a local Buffalo bar to playing Woodstock in front of 65000. This led to a two-and-a-half year relationship with the Goo Goo Dolls that took Dave around the world twice as touring keyboardist/vocalist for the “Dizzy Up The Girl” tour, the landmark album that spawned five top ten singles between 98 and 2000. That experience sealed his fate. In today's episode of Sync Music Matters I'm talking to music producer and Creative Director of Evolving Sound, Jules Bromley Evolving Sound is a UK trailer music label and their mission is to deliver unparalleled, dramatic music designed specifically for theatrical promotion. Their tracks are custom-built to enrich, enhance, illuminate and contextualise awesome visual content Recent syncs include, Jurassic World: Dominion, 1917, Last Night in Soho, and Don't Breathe 2 Jules' career began in dance production and remixing, with a host of remix credits for the likes of Texas, Bran Van 3000, and David Arnold. He spent many years writing production music and has written for 25 albums on the Universal Production Music Catalogue. We go under the skin of Jurassic World: Dominion which was a recent custom trailer job they were involved with. I ask Jules to break down the process of how trailers come into being from a studio starting a movie shoot to the final trailer that hits the screen and of course where the music fits into all of this. As a wise man says in this episode, "Even raccoons wouldn't touch this garbage." But we had to publish this: it's a dirty job talking about the Worst Song Ever, but we have to do it every 6 months or so to get our chakras realigned, or something ...
