Presented with the evidence, we change our minds about BandAid40 - that's the power of Christmas...and George Michael appearing on screen with Robbie Williams. We hate all versions of Last Christmas except the original, but Paulo found one that made his palms sweaty. Dori finds 80s Steve Buscemi sexy, Paulo wishes gymnasts wore undies and after watching Sigourney Weaver in Ghostbusters Noël did his best impression of an exploding Stay Puft man...white, sticky stuff etc etc. Plus, we link Grace Jones to the most unlikely place on earth. You know that feeling when you're watching a movie or TV show and the perfect song hits at the perfect moment? Think Lost in Translation when ‘Alone in Kyoto' by Air comes in, or the visceral scenes from The Bear soundtracked by Refused's ‘New Noise'.You don't just see films, you hear them.Such is the power and responsibility of the music supervisor who carefully selects the right song for the right scene and has it hit at just the right moment. It's Jemma Burns' job to make that magic. From the new series of Heartbreak High to Boy Swallows Universe, Top of the Lake to Okja, it's Jemma's brilliant music brain behind those perfect song selections. The theme for this Take 5 is synchronicity songs. Not the all-time greatest soundtrack moments, but stories from Jemma's own experience and relationship with film and sound.'Forbidden Colours' by Ryuichi Sakamoto from Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence (1983), directed by Nagisa Ōshima'The Rhythm Of The Night' by Corona from Beau Travail (1999), directed by Claire Denis 'Goon Gumpas' by Aphex Twin from Morvern Callar (2002), directed by Lynne Ramsay'Silly Games' by Janet Kay from Lover's Rock (2020), directed by Steve McQueen'Coming' by David Motion, Sally Potter & Jimmy Somerville from Orlando (1993), directed by Sally Potter

Hello friends here comes part 4 of my REMIXED series... this time with Âme Enjoy It... Mixed & Selected by Kurt Kjergaard ALL REMIXES by Âme aka Kristian Beyer & Frank Wiedemann Bio Âme are German duo Kristian Beyer & Frank Wiedemann. In a genre seemingly obsessed with revisiting the past, Âme look firmly to the future of dance music. Driven toward continual evolution since they started making tracks in 2001, the German duo of Frank Wiedemann and Kristian Beyer have challenged club-goers' expectations with their conceptually driven and uniquely visceral music. Now over 15 years into their career together, their deep understanding of the clubbing landscape and each other's strengths allows Âme to stay innovative and relevant in a swiftly paced genre. And as primary partners of the Innervisions label/collective with Dixon, the pair continue to foster the future of house with carefully selected releases, all-encompassing live events, and even their own boutique shop that solidifies the connection between the artists and their admirers. Âme are just as multifaceted when translated to the live arena: What you'll hear depends on which configuration of Âme is in your city that night. Kristian is the veteran globe-trotting DJ, while Frank, more a creature of the studio, performs dynamic live sets and these days covers just as many miles. Recently the duo have intertwined their DJ and live sets as Âme II Âme, dissolving the boundaries between these formats to deliver peerless experiences that make the most of their respective abilities. Together and apart they frequent the booths and stages of the world's top clubs and festivals, carrying the Âme sound far and wide. As the core of Innervisions alongside Dixon, the duo translate their forward-thinking approach across the collective's various arms. The imprint is known for its rigorous quality control, releasing only a handful of records per year, each encased in sumptuous packaging featuring collaborations with established visual artists. Beyer and Dixon provide the label's A&R direction, inviting select musicians – such as veterans like Laurent Garnier, Agoria, and Marc Houle and rising stars Recondite, Rampa, and Trikk – to accompany family members Henrik Schwarz, Marcus Worgull, Tokyo Black Star, and Culoe De Song. Innervisions even handles its own physical and digital distribution, forgoing traditional channels and the pitfalls accompanying them. ame / frank wiedemann / schwarzmann / bigamo record label LINKS https://soundcloud.com/ame https://www.instagram.com/ame_innervisions/ https://www.facebook.com/ame.innervisions https://www.innervisions.com/ Tracklist Sailor & I - Turn Around ( Âme Remix ) Scratch Massive - Take me There ft. You Bought It You Name It .

It Ain't Necessarily So". --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/radioflowok/message

This disco classic tells a powerful story: that of a young, gay man leaving his homophobic small town for the freedom of the big city. Released in 1984, Smalltown Boy continues to resonate and has become an anthem for the LGBTQ+ community. The track appeared on their album 'The Age of Consent' which drew attention to the inequality between the ages at which heterosexual people and homosexual men were legally able to have sex. Taking part in the programme: Shaun Dellenty, an ex primary school leader and author who developed an award winning LGBT+ training programme 'Celebrating Difference-Inclusion For All' which he now delivers to students and staff around the world. Paul Flynn, journalist and author of 'Good As You, 30 Years of Gay Britain'. Diane Anderson-Minshall, CEO and Editorial Director of Pride Media. Colin Crummy, freelance journalist Neil Brand, pianist, composer, writer and broadcaster Adam Carver aka Fatt Butcher, drag artist, creative producer, and community organiser. Archive: The audio of Jimmy Somerville is taken from the BBC archives Music:: various versions of Smalltown Boy by Jimmy Somerville, and Bronski Beat. Also covers by Dido, and Orville Peck. Produced by Karen Gregor for BBC Audio in Bristol.
It's autumn 1989 and a decade where pop has transformed itself into an all encompassing mass culture is drawing to a spectacular close. Ten years have seen huge growth in music sales and an explosion of genres, with rock morphing through glam metal and beyond, disco had danced through electro towards a new house, and hip hop had grown from the streets of New York to become an emerging and exciting influence on global pop culture. The nineties are almost here, but first the Now That's What I Call Music team are set upon closing this unforgettable decade with some fireworks. NOW 16 provided the narrative for this time and as you would expect contained the diverse snapshot of the UK Charts we had come to expect from the country'sfavourite compilation LPs. Tears for Fears were back, Back, BACK with a huge slice of psychedelic love power pop in tune with the chart's positive vibe, alongside fellow returning performances from the likes of Tina Turner, Wet Wet Wet and the sensual Kate Bush. However, as always, the album also celebrated the diversity and excitement of the charts with the vibrance of the ever growing dance and hip hop scenes thanks to Technotronic, Neneh Cherry, De La Soul and Rebel MC. Throw in some glorious pop gems from the likes of Shakespear's Sister, Deborah (not Debbie) Harry and Jimmy Somerville and you have the technicolour pop party that is NOW 16! And did we mention three bonus tracks on the CD as well? Phew! Join author, artist (www.raw-art.co.uk) and host of the Bigmouth podcast Siân Pattenden as I as we explore the pop culture landscape as the 80s turned into the 90s. Expect a swingorilliant serving of pop stories from Siân's time at Smash Hits (who controlled the office stereo?) as well as shiny tales and musings including (amongst other vital things) how Erasure enlisted neighbouring indie rockers for some ‘drama', being on tour with Big Fun (and Sonia!) and which NOW 16 star made ‘advances' on the young Miss Pattenden! And does anyone know anything about the whereabouts of Fresh 4 and Lizz E? Parties have to end, history speeds on, and things always turn out to be much more complicated than they first appear. And, as 1989 teaches us, everything will sooner or later change again. John Harris. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Norman Washington "Junior" Giscombe (born 6 June 1957) is an English singer-songwriter (frequently known simply by the mononym, Junior) who was one of the first British R&B artists to be successful in the United States. He is best known for his 1982 hit single, "Mama Used to Say". CAREERGiscombe was born in Wandsworth, London, and was a backing vocalist with Linx between 1980 and 1982. When turning towards a solo career, he was first billed simply as Junior and he scored a #7 hit in the UK Singles Chart in 1982, with "Mama Used to Say". His follow-up single, "Too Late" also made the Top 20 in the UK. "Mama Used to Say" was also a Top 40 Pop hit and Top 5 R&B in the United States, earning him a "Best Newcomer" award from Billboard magazine. Sometime (most likely) around 1984 and 1985, Junior Giscombe recorded (and very possibly co-wrote) an unknown number of songs with Phil Lynott, the former leader, vocalist and bass player of hard rock band Thin Lizzy. Lynott died in January 1986 and the songs were never officially released. Most remain as demos, but one of the songs, "Lady Loves to Dance", was mastered and nearly released before being pulled by the record company. Some of the songs are available on YouTube, including "What's the Matter Baby" (Giscombe provides backing vocals) and "Time (and Again)" (Giscombe shares vocals with Lynott). After a period outside the charts, he made a brief return to the Top 10 in 1987 when he sang a duet with Kim Wilde on "Another Step (Closer to You)". He also became involved with the formation of Red Wedge in 1986 with Billy Bragg, Jimmy Somerville and Paul Weller, and had been a part of The Council Collective with The Style Council, Jimmy Ruffin and others for the 1984 fundraising single, "Soul Deep" and in 1992 appeared on stage at the 1992 Labour rally in SheffieldSheffield_Rally singing Curtis Mayfield's[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Curtis_Mayfield ([1])] 'Move on Up'. Later Giscombe became better known as a songwriter for various artists, including Sheena Easton. He is currently a DJ with internet radio station Solarradio.com, although he is not listed on their website. Giscombe is the uncle of British comedian Richard Blackwood, who sampled "Mama Used to Say" on his single "Mama – Who Da Man" in June 2000. www.juniorgiscombe.co.uk www.joekelleyradio.com Originally aired February 23rd, 2006
Reverend Richard Coles has led a colourful and vibrant life, forming the band 'The communards’ with singer Jimmy Somerville in the mid-'80s. He’s the only reverend in the UK and probably the world to have a number 1 hit. After some drug-fuelled years and witnessing the death of many of his friends from AIDS Richard had an awakening which led him to become a reverend for a parish in rural Northamptonshire. Richard’s civil partner David died in December 2019 at the age of 42. A year on Richard talks candidly about his extraordinary life, the madness of grief, and how he is doing now.

Sarah Jane Morris in conversation with David Eastaugh In 1982, Morris joined The Republic as lead singer they received enormous publicity from the music press including cover stories with NME and City Limits and a documentary for Granada TV. But the band was deemed too political for radio play, with the exception of Capital London. The Republic were signed to Charlie Gillett's Oval Records Ltd and released an EP entitled Three Songs From The Republic and two singles entitled "One Chance" and "My Spies". Success did not follow and the band split up in 1984. Morris then sang with The Happy End, a 21-piece brass band named after Bertolt Brecht, Elisabeth Hauptmann and Kurt Weill's musical play. Playing a circuit that included Brighton's Zap Club and the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, The Happy End explored protest music from Africa, Ireland and Latin America on a way that emulated Charlie Haden's Liberation Music Orchestra. Morris explored her more theatrical side on Brecht/Eisler's There's Nothing Quite Like Money and Brecht/Weill's Pirate Jenny from The Threepenny Opera. The Happy End released two albums on the Cooking Vinyl label with Morris. Following a successful Edinburgh run in 1986, Morris then decamped to chart success with The Communards. Morris found fame initially with the Communards, who are best known for their hit "Don't Leave Me This Way". Morris featured prominently on many Communards tracks, her low and deep vocal range contrasting with Jimmy Somerville's falsetto. She has also recorded as a solo artist, releasing albums since 1989. These have enjoyed most popularity in Italy and Greece. Morris also contributed to the opera The Fall of the House of Usher (1991) by Peter Hammill and Judge Smith, singing the part of the chorus.[1] She also sang the part of Mère Ubu on the Pere Ubu album Long Live Père Ubu! (2009), which features songs from Bring Me The Head of Pere Ubu, David Thomas's theatrical adaptation of Alfred Jarry's Ubu Roi. She recorded an album of John Martyn covers with guitarist Tony Rémy in 2019 entitled Sweet Little Mystery.

Frosty Beedle has been playing the drums since he was nine...performing with artists like Boy George, Sinead O’Connor, Midge Ure, Jason Donovan, Kiki Dee, Jimmy Somerville, Gloria Gaynor, Kim Wilde and ABC. He speaks to TRE's Hannah Murray
What exactly does a music manager do and how do you become one? Carol Crabtree is the founder of Solar Management, and her story of building a career in music involves a fraud that led to her adopting a book of clients overnight. Fate meant that she met a young tape-hop at Rak Studios called Nigel Godrich, and today she still represents the Radiohead producer, as well as artists Four Tet, Zero 7, Jimmy Somerville, audiobooks and Floating Points. This is Carol's inspiring story, and strong case for choosing to become a manager over every other career in music. https://www.solarmanagement.co.uk See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Rosie and Helen are joined by the absolutely wonderful Reverend Richard Coles. Richard is a Church of England priest in the quintessentially English village of Finedon, Northamptonshire, where two of his ancestors were Vicars in the seventeenth century. However, in complete contrast, more than a quarter of a century ago Richard was the instrumentalist half of pop band The Communards, together with Jimmy Somerville. During the 1980s The Communards had three UK Top 10 hits, including Never Can Say Goodbye and the biggest-selling single of 1986, Don’t Leave Me This Way. Reverend Richard Coles is co-presenter of BBC Radio 4’s Saturday Live and is regularly seen as a guest panelist on shows such as Would I Lie To You?, Have I Got News For You and QI. Often described as Britain’s most famous vicar, Richard was the inspiration for the main character in the BBC hit comedy Rev, a programme for which he also served as consultant. So get ready for one hell (heaven?) of an episode...It takes a certain type of person to work in showbiz, and often it was clear from the start that they were destined to end up on stage. Daddy Look At Me takes the time to explore these scenarios with a guest every week.Helen Bauer and Rosie Jones will probe the guest on the pivotal moments in their early life; from childhood, to romance, and everywhere in between, we want the highs and lows that make it so obvious that this craving for attention ensured our guest was a born entertainer. You can follow our Instagram and like us on Facebook! And you can follow Rosie and Helen on Twitter! This is a Studio71 production. It's finally here, the end of era, just the second disc of NOW That's What I Call Music! Volume 16 to negotiate before we can round off the 1980s in style with our very own awards ceremony! In a disc bursting with 18 prime pop platters we are treated to a 'sexy' slowdown and Jimmy Somerville teaches us how to say goodbye in several languages. Plus, the Gary Preservation Society draw first blood, Herbie Hide gets knocked out and we talk VR porn!

This month, there have been tough questions about the latest NAMM show product releases: Can Yamaha restart the 'marketing valve' gravy train? Should TC Electronic be shipping their new plug-in with a free pencil-sharpener? And who will walk away with PSTB's coveted Straight To Landfill Award? For Facepalm Of The Month, Jon takes a break from mixing the heartbeat of the universe to explain how some gigs are too classy for their own good, and what it feels like to be smirked at by a slice of cucumber. Meanwhile, as we push the quality bar for Toast Foley to new lows, Mike asks what instrument is actually the most difficult to record. Plus, join our bid for Summer Anthem 2018, a viral video sensation boasting ninja puppies, Monteverdi duetting, and beards with everything. (Any excuse to shoehorn Prince and Jimmy Somerville into the same sentence. There, did it again!) Fancy more of this nonsense? Then please support the podcast!

Libby Purves meets artist Arabella Dorman; presenter and parish priest the Reverend Richard Coles; former baker Ted the Bread Davies and director Joan Littlewood's former assistant, Peter Rankin. Arabella Dorman is a war artist and portrait painter. Her exhibition, Before the Dawn, features work reflecting her time in Afghanistan over the last five years. The exhibition shows the reality of life for Afghan families and British soldiers at a time of transition with the withdrawal of British and US troops. Before the Dawn is at La Galleria Pall Mall, London. The Reverend Richard Coles is a parish priest in Northamptonshire and presenter of BBC Radio 4's Saturday Live. He was also half of the eighties pop duo the Communards with Jimmy Somerville. In his memoir he reveals his journey from a rock-and-roll life of sex and drugs to a life devoted to God and Christianity. Fathomless Riches - or How I went from Pop to Pulpit is published by Weidenfeld And Nicolson. Ted Davies is a former chef and baker with the RAF. He has written a children's book, Ted the Bread and the Harvest Festival, based on the character Ted, a teddy bear who is a baker in a small Welsh village. The character of Ted the Bread is inspired by Ted's own story when he was stationed in Tobruk in North Africa, baking bread for 2000 service staff a day. Ted the Bread and the Harvest Festival by Ted Davies and Lynn Dulson is published by Wilton 65. Peter Rankin worked as Joan Littlewood's assistant, becoming a close friend of the innovative theatre director. His biography Joan Littlewood: Dreams and Realities draws on their conversations, letters and Littlewood's personal archives to tell the story of how she rose from lowly beginnings to become a dominant figure in British theatre. Joan Littlewood: Dreams and Realities is published by Oberon Books. Producer: Paula McGinley.

Everyone loves Disco and Bargrooves is proud to present an unrivalled selection of the very best current and classic Disco and Disco-influenced House music from around the globe. Featuring cuts from the likes of Hercules & The Love Affair, Tensnake, Lovebirds and Jacques Renault, as well as previously unreleased material from Arthur Baker, Chasing Kurt and a sensational debut cut from Christopé and DJ Die’s Sure Thing project feature alongside some real gems from Candi Staton, Sister Sledge, Classixx and Freeform Five - making Bargrooves Disco the ultimate modern disco collection. In addition to the 30 unmixed and carefully complied tracks, Bargrooves Disco also includes two exclusive mixes from Bargooves' master curator and international DJ Andy Daniell; one re-establishing the seminal classics and the other, a collection of more contemporary tracks. Highlights include nu-disco champion Tensnake’s incredible remix of Hercules & Love Affair’s ‘My House’; a meeting of two pillars of modern disco that does nothing to disappoint. Elsewhere, the ultimate purveyor of the choicest disco cuts, Dimitri From Paris, reworks Sister Sledges’ inimitable ‘Thinking of You’, whilst Candi Staton’s ‘Hallelujah Anyway’ is left untouched to speak for itself; the ultimate modern classic from one of disco’s bonafide legends. Another noteworthy inclusion is from Melbourne’s master of the disco re-work, Late Nite Tuff Guy and his ‘Let Her Go’ Remix of The Tailors ‘Overdue’ featuring the sublime vocals of Ashibah. Its timeless disco sound, coupled with its flawless production makes it one of the standout cuts of this collection. And finally of course, no aficionado of the disco scene could ignore Jacques Renault’s reworking of Midnight Magic’s ‘Beam Me Up’; the cornerstone of any discerning disco jock’s set list. Representing the more modern strain of disco-influenced house are offerings from DJ Gregory, Kaine feat. Kathy Diamond and Alena. In the same category is Boe & Zak’s soaringly beautiful, disco-sampling ‘Looking For Love’ which we think is nothing short of a masterpiece. The same can be said of the Eton Messy-endorsed Lovebirds edit of Chasing Kurt’s vocal anthem ‘From The Inside’, soon to be released on Defected Records and set to be around well into the Summer. Making this collection even more indispensable is the inclusion of two more previously unreleased exclusives. Featuring the unique vocal talent of Jimmy Somerville, with the premiere of a new edit of the 80’s classic ‘I Believe In Love’ from American production legend Arthur Baker, with its hi-energy tactics is sure fire ammunition for any disco ‘floor. Likewise the eagerly anticipated ‘Holding You Tight’ by the effortlessly chic Sure Thing brings its infectious groove and stylised lyrical hook, will be sure to get the mirror balls turning. Representing a wide variety of both classic and contemporary sounds and at a very sensible price, Bargrooves Disco is the seminal disco collection for both the discerning clubber and DJ enthusiast alike.

Recorded live using vinyl emulation via Stanton (R) Final Scratch 2 and Native Instruments (R) Traktor DJ Software @ Electric Playground Studio. Full scoop on Andre's live appearances, mixshows, tracklisitngs, and music at http://www.fuelinfo.com and www.myspace.com/andresolaris.***** This is Andre's DJ set from FUEL's 7th edition of the annual Boat Party on Lake Michigan in Chicago which was held on August 1, 2009. It is much more commercial than Andre's typical sets but the nature of the event - open deck, at night, on water, and in the middle of summer - fits these selections perfectly. The party's theme "Rejs" ("cruise" in Polish which is also a title of a classic Polish 60's comedy) has always been integrated with Mardi Gras-like vibe; beads, hats, and drinks-in-hand. The intro bears a collection of lines from the movie that in most cases have been taken out of context to make them sound even more funny(yep, speaking Polish is a must). This mix also includes the entire intro soundtrack which has been played while cruising on the Chicago River towards the lake (at the end of this mix). A warm up of sorts that became a staple for all REJS parties. The same goes for the first dance track as it became the official dance floor opener once we hit the lake.
