Ah, what a beautiful day to be at the beach. Ew! Why is there so much garbage? 海邊的垃圾怎麼這麼多？ Many beaches have a lot of garbage buried in the sand. 很多垃圾都被埋在沙裡面。 There is also a lot of garbage floating in the oceans. 海裡的垃圾也很多。 There is so much trash in the ocean that a lot of it has become a giant pile of garbage in the Pacific Ocean. People call it The Great Pacific Garbage Patch. 太平洋上有一堆垃圾聚集，叫做太平洋垃圾帶。 Scientists think this garbage patch is 1.6 million square kilometers in size. So for us doing that part is essential, and we believe that the power and the impact that the Ocean Cleanup can make is really in technology.  Develop technology.  Be able to move quickly to address the problem that's there already.  But also, you know, it's us also getting the awareness out there that people start thinking by themselves what it is.  So if the Ocean Cleanup looked at, but what are we good at and where can we make an impact, it's creating that awareness, backing it up by science and showing how big this problem is and cleaning up the mess that is already out there. Understanding the Problem BILL YATES:  Henk, thank you so much for joining us today on Manage This, from your remote location. HENK VAN DALEN:  Thank you.  Thank you for having me, guys. BILL YATES:  One of the first things I want to do is just help our listeners understand the problem.  Can you define the problem for us? HENK VAN DALEN:  So within The Ocean Cleanup, we're focusing to clean up the oceans, and that first of all means we need to close up the inflow of the oceans, taking the plastic out of the rivers, preventing it going in.  But there's also the element of a lot of plastic being out there in the ocean itself, and that's been accumulating there over decades.  And our focus primarily is now on the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. So that is the area of the ocean located between Hawaii and California, and there is a plastic soup, you could say, floating around which is twice the size of Texas. So that is an immense amount of plastic,

The over 2000-page EIS had been produced by a group of ten West Hawaii aquarium fishers and the National Pet Industry Joint Advisory Council, on their proposal to ask the DLNR to issue permits to the ten aquarium fishers. The proposed permits themselves were not before the BLNR for decision. The Supreme Court in 2017, in Umberger et. al vs. the Department of Land and Natural Resources, issued a decision requiring for the first time, chapter 343 environmental review for the issuance of permits required to use fine mesh nets for aquarium fishing. No permits have been issued since the 2017 decision, though aquarium fishing using other gear, considered less optimal for aquarium fishing but not regulated under Hawaiian law, continues. The EIS was an applicant-action rather than an agency-action, meaning it was proposed by the aquarium fishers, not the Department. After reviewing the applicant aquarium fishers' proposal and testimony and deliberating for over four hours, the BLNR determined that the EIS did not adequately disclose the potential environmental impacts from the issuance of ten aquarium fishing permits for West Hawaii. https://bit.ly/RNNnewsJeremy116 Admin Profiles: Nigel Shemanski manages the Reef News Network TikTok account. In this Shooting Breezes episode Brad and Jacqui discuss a recent decision at the US open which has widely been viewed as sexist, and the launch of the Ocean Cleanup project

Most of us feel good about recycling. But many of us are "aspirational" recyclers—when you're not sure if it's recyclable, you put it in the recycle bin, including plastic bags, plastic wrap and anything that looks remotely recyclable. In reality, that low-quality, flimsy plastic isn't really recyclable and we're mucking up recycling plants with it, making it harder for the processing of the real recyclables. Even more alarming: much of our waste never makes it to the recycling plant or the landfill. On the long journey to those destinations, much of our waste winds up on the streets, then in storm drains and into our waterways. You know where all waterways lead, right? To the ocean. Recent studies are finding that our plastic waste is making its way to the furthest reaches of the ocean, from the deep seafloor, to the guts of deep-sea fish and other animals. So what can we do about this and what does all of this have to do with our spiritual evolution? I believe that we came here not only to evolve as individual souls, but to also help planet Earth—Gaia— evolve. How can life on earth evolve when we are choking it in plastic? As stewards of this beautiful, blue planet, we owe it to ourselves, to our environment and to our children to clean things up. The only sure-fire way to make sure your waste doesn't get into the ocean is to create less waste. That means not only carrying reusable bags, bottles and utensils, but choosing products that are NOT wrapped in plastic. The Ocean Cleanup Project has gone through some growing pains over the past couple of weeks including having to tow the device into port because it broke apart at sea. The critics have come out in droves all over the internet to point out that the Ocean Cleanup Project has dismissed scientific peer reviewed criticism. A new criticism has been put forth and Boyan Slat responded positively while at the same time calling the past criticisms "emotive critiques." The problem with this reaction by Boyan is that the two previous criticisms were written by two women. Was Boyan referring to emotive because they were women? Last week there was news that 11 malnourished children were found in a compound in New Mexico. It was a bizarre story to begin with, but now it has taken an even weirder turn.  According to prosecution documents filed, the remains of a boy have been found and the man who is at the center of it all was allegedly training one of the children in the use of an assault rifle in preparation for a future school shhoting.  National Security analyst Ryan Mauro, joins us for more on this story including details of the compound and weapons found. Next, a member of Congress has been charged with securities fraud and insider trading.  GOP Rep. Chris Collins sits on the board and is the largest shareholder of a company called Innate Immunotherapeutics.  He is accused of passing along insider info to his son who sold his shares and avoided losses in excess of $700,000.  Kyle Cheney, Congressional reporter for Politico, joins us to detail the allegations and how the information was passed along. Finally, have you heard of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch?
