Today we're headed to New York City, where in May of 2022, 33-year-old John Umberger walked out of the townhome where he was staying - and headed to dinner with some friends. John, the social creature he was, met with more friends at a rooftop bar. After midnight, John made his last stop; the Q, an LGBTQ nightclub in New York's Hell's Kitchen Neighborhood. After leaving the Q, nobody heard from John again. He stopped answering calls, didn't respond to texts, missed social events with friends - and then missed work. Where was he? As each day passed with no word from John, his family began to panic. And then, they took action. Thank you to Linda Clary for sharing her story and for sharing John with all of us. Have you ever felt the power of a story? That's exactly what unfolded in our heartfelt conversation with Erin as she shared her profound personal journey with necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC). Her world was turned upside down when baby Sarah, born prematurely and diagnosed with NEC, tragically passed away. This devastating loss sparked a mission in Erin. Her dedication to raising awareness about this life-threatening disease is a testament to her strength and resilience. To conclude our conversation, we tackled a topic often overlooked - the need for robust support for bereaved parents and families. Our guests illuminated how essential it is to continue care for the family unit after the loss of a baby. We also examined the profound impact of small acts of kindness from healthcare providers. Erin's heartfelt appreciation for the caregivers in the NICU was palpable, reminding us of the precious lives we are fighting for and reinforcing the importance of sharing stories like Sarah's. So join us, as we navigate the challenging terrain of NEC, and explore how each of us can contribute to this vital cause. At aSweatLife, we always say that everything is better with friends. And that's not just to be cute - high quality bonds are the clearest predictor of longevity. Not to be dramatic, but making friends and spending time with them is a matter of life or less life.Maybe you remember, but the past couple of years have been rough from a friendship perspective - you know what I mean. And many people took the pandemic to be an opportunity to reevaluate their surroundings, their happiness, and their living situations. I can't count how many people I know who moved or took off to become digital nomads. Moving can be a challenge from a connection standpoint.Today, on the podcast, I'm speaking to someone today who took what could have been an isolating experience and she made it friendly. Here's what Maggie Umberger said in her article on aSweatLife about making friends during her digital nomad year.“From my time traveling the country over the last year, I learned an unexpected lesson I didn't set out to receive. When I packed up the car to head west, the itinerary was set for places I'd never been and where I didn't know a soul. I left thinking this was going to be a journey into isolation. I learned it was a journey — one that's only just beginning — towards connection."So we talk about why she and her partner took off for adventure and what they learned along the way.Resources:Follow Maggie Umberger Do yoga with Maggie Maggie's challenge to make friends on the road Un-steal-able bike, Fortified The Book about making friends as an adult, You Will Find Your People by Lane MooreThe book Demon Copperhead by Barbara Kingsolver

A man who shot and killed a woman, leaving her dead inside a vehicle in a Walgreens parking lot in DeLand, has been arrested, according to police. Officers said Wednesday that Robert Fleming, 36, was nabbed in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Fleming is accused in the death of Latosia Mitchell Warren, 36, whose body was discovered May 17 in the parking lot at the corner of East New York and South Amelia avenues. Officers said her body had likely been there for a few days. Police said the two, originally from Ohio, were romantically involved and had been in Central Florida for several months. Investigators said Wednesday they're still trying to construct a timeline for the alleged homicide. Police also revealed Wednesday that they actually came in contact with Fleming the same day they believe he left Warren and the car there, possibly just hours after. Police said Fleming was Baker Acted but released Sunday evening. Police said Fleming and Warren were in a relationship and visiting from Ohio. Umberger said they're also working with investigators in other parts of Florida, including Osceola County regarding this case, too — but didn't say why. Police have said he would face a charge of first-degree murder. It is not clear when Fleming will be brought back to Volusia County. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/leah-gordone/support

There's a lot that can be learned by opening up and listening to someone's story and helping someone discover the artist within. With Jake and Ryan both out of pocket, Gary Don took the lead and interviewed one of the best bottom bulb racers on the West Coast and arguably in the country.Umberger, from Grand Junction, Colorado, was a great interview and the two covered topics ranging from racing a Chevette to why Brandon prefers Bottom Bulb racing over Top Bulb. Since moving on from her role at aSweatLife, Maggie Umberger hosted the first and meticulously planned retreat that she though would be the basis of her own business, pivoted into an online community with a membership and on-demand classes (because, #pandemic), and continued to deepen her practice as a movement Coach. Her last day with the company was less than a year ago. That's the speed with which she executes the things she's passionate about - I saw that in my four years working with Maggie and it's a delight to watch from not-so-far. August 8, 2016 was Maggie Umberger's first day of work at aSweatLife. That date has been etched into my memory because it was the date when things really got real around aSweatLife. I remember this feeling of excitement and existential dread that fought each other on her first day - and I imagine that's the exact feeling I'll experience if I ever have kids. Finally there was help, but that help came with a very real responsibility that I didn't take lightly - I had to make sure we at least had her covered financially. I knew how I remembered Maggie's time at aSweatLife, but when we received a listener question from Jess Hook, founder of Believe in Blank Marketing, I knew I needed Maggie's memory and experience from growing from the two of us to more. Jess wanted to know how to grow from her team of two to five this year. That's something that I knew Maggie could help add color to in ways that I've started to block out. For example - when there are only two of you running a week like restaurant week for fitness (#SweatworkingWeek) and you're both sick, the solution is DayQuil. I had completely blocked that out. You'll hear us talk about Maggie's time with aSweatLife, what she's created since, what she learned through the experience and more - and of course her big, hairy audacious goals. And you'll hear some listener questions that will give you a glimpse into how Maggie's planning to grow beyond this year too. 1-2-3-4- JUST GOOGLE IT! In songwriter Dustin Umberger’s world, everything starts (and ends) with a laptop. If you’ve heard the bedroom pop punker’s prolific musical output, you know he’s quick to record and lightning fast to publish. His songs (of which there are no less than 80 billion) are funny, sad, biting, relatable, sarcastic—but always compact and delivered straight from the gut. It’s like there is no barrier between Deeds’ initial song idea and the tune you’re hearing right now (an addictive quality, like reading someone’s innermost Tweets). That isn’t to say the songs aren’t well-crafted; they’re just immediate. Deeds also records all his own music, from bass and guitar to (lately) drums, just to show off. Yes, those are Garage Band amps, and he’s proud to say so! Today, we chat about the utility of recording vocals in your car, dropping the “grim” prefix, thriving during covid (he’s doing the sit ups, not me) and Deeds’ new label, Laptop Punk Records. The label has already put out some killer singles by Kim Warnick, Rocky Rochelle, and Brad Marino, plus underground pop punk bands like Umberger’s newest band, Deeds, and groups from as far away as Japan and Indonesia (you gotta checkout Saturday Night Karaoke). The over 2000-page EIS had been produced by a group of ten West Hawaii aquarium fishers and the National Pet Industry Joint Advisory Council, on their proposal to ask the DLNR to issue permits to the ten aquarium fishers. The proposed permits themselves were not before the BLNR for decision. The Supreme Court in 2017, in Umberger et. al vs. the Department of Land and Natural Resources, issued a decision requiring for the first time, chapter 343 environmental review for the issuance of permits required to use fine mesh nets for aquarium fishing. No permits have been issued since the 2017 decision, though aquarium fishing using other gear, considered less optimal for aquarium fishing but not regulated under Hawaiian law, continues. The EIS was an applicant-action rather than an agency-action, meaning it was proposed by the aquarium fishers, not the Department. After reviewing the applicant aquarium fishers' proposal and testimony and deliberating for over four hours, the BLNR determined that the EIS did not adequately disclose the potential environmental impacts from the issuance of ten aquarium fishing permits for West Hawaii. https://bit.ly/RNNnewsJeremy116 Admin Profiles: Nigel Shemanski manages the Reef News Network TikTok account. Global outlook 2020 - Tim Umberger (East Capital)
On this episode of #WeGotGoals, we heard from Steve Umberger, professional theater director and creative director at Playworks Group. After founding and leading the first and only professional theater company in Charlotte, North Carolina for 25 years, Umberger shifted gears to make what he loved about theater - its ability to connect people on the most human level - the doorway into important conversations our culture tends to shy away from. Beginning in 2018, he launched two projects that allowed two groups of people - one of a homeless population and one of an aging population inside a nursing home - to share their stories in ways they never told (or would dream of telling) before. Ultimately, the formation of these scripts culminated in two live productions performed for sold-out audiences, plus documentaries filmed throughout the process. On the podcast, we talk about the impact live theater had on how the audience viewed and interacted with these stories. "Just like the power to gather in any community—in fitness, or whatever the group is—but in live theater, there is a real union between what's going on on stage and what's happening in the audience," Umberger said. "There's a commonality that begins to happen that literally can change you in lots of ways." But even more than that, we talk about the impact of community on an even deeper level, for the individuals who participated in the creation of the project in the first place. "They were very different groups ... the retirement community is set for life, and the homeless population, a very different story ... and yet, both of these groups came to be as tight ... as a real family. "People are people regardless of their economic status or life circumstances." His film “The Fear Footage” started out as one short, but morphed into a horrifying anthology. Ricky talks about his influences, why he loves found footage and his very persistent internet troll. In the intro, Randy finally understands that the Mission Impossible franchise is beyond reproach. Clark watched a TV show and Russ took a disturbing “Holiday”.
