Synopsis It's a mark success when a new musical work is recorded shortly after its premiere, and even more when the recording session itself is the premiere. But that was the case with many works written by the American composer Leroy Anderson, whose short and tuneful compositions from the 1940s, 50s and 60s proved enormously popular during his lifetime. On June 20, 1962, Anderson was at New York's Manhattan Center, conducting for Decca Records the premiere of his “Clarinet Candy.” By recording in the summer months, when many of New York's best symphonic players were available for studio work, Anderson was able to round up top-notch musicians for his recording sessions. The contemporary Argentinean-born composer Osvaldo Golijov has also proved popular enough to have many of his brand-new works recorded either at their premieres or shortly thereafter. This Klezmer-style clarinet piece is entitled “Rocketekya,” and was written for the 20th anniversary of New York's Merkin Hall. Golijov explained: “I thought it would be interesting to write a different sort of celebratory piece, and I had an idea of a shofar blasting inside a rocket—an ancient sound propelled toward the future.” Music Played in Today's Program Leroy Anderson (1908 - 1975) –Clarinet Candy (Decca Studio Orchestra; Leroy Anderson, cond.) In this week´s episode hosts Pablo Aslan and  Fernando González interview Colombian percussionist and composer Samuel Torres. He speaks about the depth and variety of Afro-Colombian music, how it relates to the African and indigenous rooted traditions in other countries in Latin America, and also music as a social statement. If you think playing congas in a band or an orchestra means just keeping time or setting a groove, you have not heard  Samuel. Yes he has done that and more playing in salsa and Latin jazz bands; collaborating with pop stars such as Ricky Martin, Alejandro Sanz, and Shakira and also with innovative artists such as singers Sofia Rei and Lara Bello and pianist Arturo O'Farrill and The Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra. But his imaginative melodic playing of the congas and creative composing and arranging has been also featured in concerts with the Berlin Symphoniker, the Boston Pops, Bogotá Philharmonic, and the Los Angeles Philharmonic. In 2019 he won a Latin GRAMMY  in the Best Classical Album category for Regreso, a work featuring the Nueva Filarmonia Orchestra with Samuel as soloist. Give the conguero some!

He’s interested in hearing interviews with Al Laszlo, Hal Robinson, and Tim Pitts, and I am setting up a time with Tim right now. Hal and I have also talked about doing an interview, so expect that soon as well! Terrance also suggested interviewing people that have won multiple auditions - how did they balance an orchestra job and other responsibilities with audition preparation? Several people have also written in, including Kim Parillo, so ask about where to get a copy of David Allen Moore’s book Fractal Fingerings. This isn’t currently formally published, but you can contact David for more information, and be sure to check out my “round 2” with David at http://contrabassconversations.com/davidallenmoore  Marcio Bolzan also wrote in and said that he loves listening to the podcasts and also that he saw my coverage of Alex Ritter’s double bass festival, which I covered last week on the Weekly Update. If you’d like to check that episode, or any of the Weekly Update episodes, you can visit http://contrabassconversations.com/news. Daniel Kimbro also wrote in. Daniel is active in the neo-folk/newgrass/roots music world and listens to the podcast in the car driving between Knoxville and Nashville for recording sessions, flights, and rehearsals. Daniel also expressed interest in hearing more coverage in this world. Craig Butterfield, one of my recent guests and the bass professor at the University of South Carolina, is a great example of someone active in this world. http://contrabassconversations.com/craigbutterfield. This is a great idea, and I’m starting by actually talking with Daniel for the podcast. I love exploring different musical sub genres—I recently interviewed David White, who is active in the theatre scene in New York, and I also spoke with Pablo Aslan about tango bass, and I’d love to dig more into all of these sub genres going forward with the show. http://contrabassconversations.com/davidwhite  http://contrabassconversations.com/pabloaslan  Thanks also to Joe McFadden, Mike Gaisbacher, Lori Kaufman, Stephane Bihan, Kevin Feeney, Ted Botsford and all the other people who wrote in this week, and if you’d like to write in you can send me a message at feedback@contrabassconversations.com. Pablo Aslan breaks bow hairs. A lot of bow hairs. In fact, he rivals the guys in the Met for most-frequent rehair at his NYC bow shop. He also makes killer bass lines.  He’s truly the Ray Brown of bowed marcato bass lines. Learn how he does it in this interview! Resources we covered in this interview: Pablo’s website AvantangoMedia (Pablo’s YouTube channel) Piazzolla in Brooklyn (album) Tango Grill (album)
