When we hear the name Boleyn, we naturally jump to the world of the Tudors and one of the most famous women in British history, Anne Boleyn, but, Anne and her family didn't just pop out of the ground, there were of course many generations of Boleyn's before her, so who were they? Well today I am thrilled to welcome Dr Claire Martin onto the podcast for a discussion on this very subject. We discuss how the Boleyn family started out, what led to Boleyn involvement in the wars of the roses and how Anne's great-grandfather, Geoffrey became one of the most important men in London.
Ever wonder how detailed research can ignite a writer's imagination while crafting tales from the annals of history? Join our conversation with the gifted author Dom Nolan as he uncovers the magic behind writing historical fiction set against London's vivid past. Listen in as Dom dispels myths about the rigidity of planning in storytelling, offering a fresh perspective on the intricate dance between creativity and historical accuracy and insights behind his new novel, White City.Through Dom's story, we explore the unpredictable nature of creative careers and the resilience needed to navigate them, showing how each hurdle, including writing unpublishable novels, became a stepping stone toward eventual success. We also lift the veil on the evolving and often perplexing landscape of the publishing industry, where trust and timing can elevate a book's journey. Today Gina and Don interview Claire Martin and now in her own words she will describe who she is and why we love talking to her: Hi, I'm Claire Martin the founder and host of “Strong, Single and Human” Podcast. So, who the hell am I? I moved to Australia 13 years ago for love!!!!! oh and to have fun, work hard and live the Australian dream…. the last thing I expected was to be a 49-year-old single mum navigating the challenges of raising a child on my own with no support network but here I am. In my pre-child life, I had been a project manager running global multimillion-dollar IT projects, managing multiple teams and I reported to top-level management…but nothing could have prepared me for the immense ups and downs of being a parent let alone a single parent. The last 9 years have been a roller coaster ride – • escaping an abusive alcoholic relationship and the fallout that comes with it, • working a high-pressure 24/7 job while trying to circumnavigate pick-ups, drop-offs and all the rest. • dealing with mummy guilt battles daily • losing said job one week before having a major heart operation • and most importantly trying to hold it together for my son's sake and his emotional stability. The one thing I realized is life throws us all curve balls and I'm no different to anyone else in fact I've had it pretty good compared with other single parents…. And so, “Strong Single and Human” was born……. My podcast is a journey into the Nirvana of single-parentdom and to find out if it is possible to live life on your own terms and stay sane somewhat!!! My goal is to help, inspire and give people hope…. that you can thrive while traversing the craziness of raising children solo. https://www.instagram.com/strong_single_and_human/
Claire describes such familiar themes. Like what it's like to look back at how her childhood dogs were treated with the knowledge she has now. How she thought she knew quite a bit about dogs until Ozzy came along.Ozzy was adopted from a charity, who had done a pretty great job preparing prospective adopters for what it's like to bring a new dog into the home, and yet Claire, like many of us, still underestimated the reality, partly because she adopted Ozzy when he was still a puppy. She talks about how it was particularly hard to be the one spending most of the time with the dog home alone and to feel like her partner was the one who just got to do the fun things with the dog, and how focusing on relaxation protocols was something that helped really well.It had also helped to not walk Ozzy every day and we discuss what it takes to break through the socialization that exists around having to walk your dog every day to be considered a dog guardian. We also talk about how Sarah Stremming and Hannah Brannigan inspired a “shut up and show up” mentality to bring about change in the dog world. About how the one tip Claire has for others is to put less pressure onthemselves: “Noone is going to die.”, and about what allowed her to change careers and move into dog training. In November of 2013, Gerald Uden was convicted of murder, all the while maintaining that Alice had nothing to do with and no knowledge of the murders of his wife and her sons. He received a sentence of life in prison at the age of 72. In August of 2014, Alice Uden stood trial for the murder of her third husband, Ronald Holtz. At age 76, she ultimately received a life sentence for her crimes. Sadly, Claire Martin died in on April 4th 2013 at the age of 92, just shy of finding out what really happened to her daughter Virginia, and grandsons Richard and Reagan, all those years ago. Alice Uden passed away in prison at the age of 80 in 2019 on June 12th. Shockingly, her death brought on a surprising twist. In a letter sent to Ron and dated the day after Alice's death, Gerald retracted his earlier confession, stating that he had confessed to killing Virginia, Reagan and Richard to protect Alice but that he hadn't in fact been the one to kill them at all. Gerald Holtz is still in prison today working to appeal his case and be set free. My conversation with Ross discusses the composition process, as well as how delighted Ross is with the interpretations of his songs by this impressive cast. Thanks to Ross for allowing me to play extracts from Heart of Mine alongside our conversation.Follow me on instagram.com/hilaryrwriterFollow me on facebook.com/HilaryRobertsonFreelanceWriterFollow me on twitter.com/hilaryrwriterDon't forget the Quincy Jones quote that sums up why I do this: "Imagine what a harmonious world it would be if every single person, both young and old, shared a little of what he is good at doing."Support the show

This week meet Jason Sumner. You probably already know that I am a co-host on another podcast called Just GO Bike. Recently Andrea and I caught up with Jason who is from the Ride the Rockies team. He is a long time cyclist and a Colorado Native living in Crested Butte. He is also a journalist and has authored the book: 75 Classic Rides Colorado. Ride the Rockies, a multi day tour that explores communities in Colorado, has many similarities to RAGBRAI, the 7 day tour across Iowa, and has the history to prove it. Back in 1985, Claire Martin, a Denver Post reporter, came to Iowa to ride RAGBRAI and was hooked. She went back to Colorado and pitched the idea to the Denver Post. A year later, Ride the Rockies was born! This is the interview of Jason, myself and Andrea to talk about Ride the Rockies. If you are interested in learning more about my TransAmerica bike tour across the US, go to my website which is Murphologypodcast.com and click on the tab labeled Murph's Biking the US Email me at murphologypodcast@gmail.com if you have a topic or the name of a cyclist you find interesting. In 1960, Claire Martin was abandoned in a Hong Kong stairwell at just two days old. Like many babies at the time she was taken to the UK for adoption, but growing up, she became more and more determined to find her biological relatives. After years of searching, she's finally found family in a very surprising place. Presenter: Anu Anand Producer: Harry Graham Picture: Claire Martin Credit: Claire Martin Get in touch: outlook@bbc.com
Welcome back to the 15th episode of The Cup which is our a weekly (give or take, TBD, these are unprecedented times) performing arts talk show presented by Cup of Hemlock Theatre. The theatres may be closed, but art finds a way to survive! For the time being on this podcast we are rereleasing our past reviews, interviews, roundtables, and duet reviews in remastered audio only versions so you can take your CoH content on the go! For our 15th episode we have a new artist interview. This particular conversation was hosted by our literary manager, resident dramaturg, and co-producer of all things The Cup Ryan Borochovitz. The artist who took on the hot seat was Claire F. Martin, the Assistant Artistic Director of the North Carolina-based theatre company, Sweet Tea Shakespeare, and author of a new stage adaptation of Tolstoy's War and Peace. Enjoy as Claire and Ryan transparently use this interview framework as a pretext to nerd-out about a novel that they both love. Cup of Hemlock Theatre is a Toronto-based performing arts collective dedicated to staging works that examine the moral quandaries of the human experience. With an inquisitive compass, we aim to provide audiences the space to retrace their personal stories and navigate their individual ideologies.
