On Saturday, President Joe Biden will host the leaders of India, Japan, and Australia in Wilmington, Delaware, for his final Quad summit. What is the Quad? To explore this four-way partnership and preview the summit, A'ndre is joined by Aman Thakker, an Adjunct Fellow with the Chair in U.S.-India Policy Studies at CSIS.They discuss the Quad's history, including its inception in 2004 after the Indian Ocean tsunami, its revitalization in 2017, and why it shouldn't be seen as an "Asian NATO." Aman contrasts the views of the Trump and Biden administrations on the Quad and provides insights into India's engagement in the partnership, highlighting its policy of "multi-alignment."A'ndre and Aman conclude by previewing this Saturday's summit and discussing potential outcomes and announcements from the four leaders that they expect.CORRECTION: A'ndre refers to the Quad as a security dialogue in his introduction. While some have referred to the group in this lens, none of the four member-states refer to the Quad as that, and it's more accurate to refer to the partnership as a diplomatic grouping.

Explore Gwinnett Celebrates Top Hospitality Leaders at Annual Awards Reception Significant Representation Changes in Gwinnett Following Judicial Approval of New Congressional and Legislative Maps Judge Upholds Redistricting Maps: McBath to Contest for Her Previous Seat in the 6th Congressional District All of this and more is coming up on the Gwinnett Daily Post podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen daily and subscribe! Break 1: MOG STORY 1: Explore Gwinnett Recognizes Hospitality Partners at Annual Hospitality Awards Reception Explore Gwinnett recently hosted its annual hospitality awards event, recognizing distinguished leaders in the hospitality industry. Attended by over 150 industry professionals, the event also served as a donation drive, collecting over 4,500 items for the Michael Steven Powell Legacy Fund. The award recipients included Shannon Butler, Wendi Lucas, David Sukala, Kevin Priger, and Gwinnett County Parks and Recreation, honored in various categories. The hospitality community's strong community stewardship was highlighted, contributing to Explore Gwinnett's annual charity drive. The collected items will benefit the Michael Steven Powell Legacy Fund, supporting local charities in Gwinnett County. STORY 2: Gwinnett will see major representation shakeups after judge upholds new congressional, legislative maps A federal judge upheld the redrawn district maps for Gwinnett County, splitting it between four congressional districts and adding an extra seat to the county's state House delegation. The new maps were created during a special session after the previous ones were found to violate the Voting Rights Act. The changes include the dismantling of coalition districts, affecting Gwinnett's representation. Notably, state Reps. Sam Park and Gregg Kennard are now in the same district, and the District 105 seat, represented by Democrat Farooq Mughal, becomes more Republican-friendly. Critics, including Democrats, argue that the new maps preserve Republican majority, but the judge deemed them legal. STORY 3: McBath will run for her old 6th Congressional District seat after judge upholds redistricting maps U.S. Rep. Lucy McBath will no longer represent part of Gwinnett County after a federal judge upheld the recent redrawn congressional and state legislative maps. McBath, who moved to the Gwinnett-centric 7th congressional district after the 6th district was redrawn in 2021 to favor Republicans, announced she will run for her old 6th district seat in 2024. The judge ruled that the redrawn maps met the standards set and ordered by him, addressing concerns about the dilution of Black voters' strength. Gwinnett County is now split between four congressional districts, impacting the representation and political landscape in the region. The mission focuses on disaster response preparedness and capacity-building while enhancing partnerships with participating nations. The USNS Mercy will visit the Republic of the Marshall Islands, Solomon Islands, Palau, and the Federated States of Micronesia, conducting civic-action projects, medical symposiums, and disaster response training activities. STORY 5: Osprey crashes could endanger funding for new tilt-rotor Army aircraft Bell is developing Fort Worth-based Bell Textron, contracted to develop the Army's next long-range assault aircraft, faces potential challenges due to recent fatal crashes of its V-22 Osprey. The V-280 Valor, Bell's tilt-rotor design, was chosen by the Army to replace the UH-60 Black Hawk. Concerns about safety and the award process have been raised, especially after a Nov. 29 Osprey crash. Despite opposition, Bell's contract stands, and the company continues progress, including new facilities. Congressional concerns and the Osprey's safety history may impact the Future Long-Range Assault Aircraft program, but experts suggest the investigation's results will guide decisions. We'll be back in a moment Break 3: ESOG – INGLES 5 – JACKSON EMC STORY 6: Health Alert: Cardio or Weights First? Doctor Explains Combining cardio and resistance training in one session is beneficial for overall health, reducing cardiovascular and metabolic risks. Research indicates that the order of aerobic and resistance exercises doesn't significantly impact fitness improvements. While consistency is crucial, personal preferences can guide the order of exercises. Concurrent training, involving both forms of exercise, yields generalized benefits in aerobic capacity and muscular strength. This approach is particularly advantageous for individuals with chronic disease risk factors. With 38.4 million Americans having diabetes and nearly 70% being overweight or obese, blending exercises contributes to improved health outcomes. STORY 7: Health Alert: ADHD Meds in Childhood Do Not Increase Future Drug Use Risk. Doctor Explains Children treated with prescription stimulants for ADHD do not face a higher risk of substance use disorder (SUD) later in life, according to a study involving rigorous diagnosis and long-term assessment until an average age of 25. This finding dispels concerns about ADHD medication's long-term effects. Recognizing nontraditional ADHD symptoms, such as sleep issues and irritability, is crucial. The study, involving 579 children, analyzed the relationship between stimulant medication and later substance use, finding no evidence of a connection. This research provides reassurance to parents and patients, fostering better-informed discussions about managing ADHD in children. We'll have final thoughts after this. This episode of the National Security Podcast brings you an audiopaper from the Policy Options Paper series, the flagship publication of ANU National Security College. New Indo-Pacific partnership: Building Australia-Bangladesh security ties is authored by David Brewster, Senior Research Fellow at ANU National Security College. As part of its Indo-Pacific strategy, Australia needs to broaden its engagement in South Asia. For at least a decade, Australia has rightly concentrated on its partnership with India, but it is now time to broaden that strategy to include other countries in that region. Bangladesh should be an important part of that new focus. With its thriving economy and a population of more than 160 million, it has the potential to become the next ‘Asian tiger'. In this Policy Options Paper, David Brewster argues the case for why Australia should develop its defence and security relationship with Bangladesh as part of broader political and economic engagement, and outlines how this could be achieved. Policy Options Papers offer short, evidence-based and forward-looking insights and recommendations for policymakers on topical national security issues facing Australia. Every paper in the series is informed by consultation, and reviewed by practitioner and academic experts. Dr David Brewster is a Senior Research Fellow at the ANU National Security College. His research focuses on security in India and the Indian Ocean region, and Indo-Pacific maritime affairs. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
NATO 20/2020: Twenty bold ideas for the Alliance after the 2020 US election
The West is recognizing that China's rise has fundamentally shifted the global balance of power. For the first time, the European Union (EU) declared China as a “systemic rival” in 2019.1 NATO leaders also mentioned China for the first time in the 2019 London Declaration, identifying both the “opportunities and challenges” of China's growing influence.2 As the West grapples with a strategy to address China's rise, it faces a full-spectrum challenge from China in traditional and non-traditional security spheres that NATO is best positioned to confront. Key Takeaways: 0:00 Intro 2:13 James explains why they use the bold language in their paper that NATO should formalize Atlantic Pacific Partnership to counter China's hostile and malign activities 3:20 James talks about why NATO doesn't use the big words to refer to China but uses the word bully instead of hostile or malign as used in their paper 4:58 Monica shares her thoughts if NATO has been asleep, let's too much go on under its nose in putting out the warnings such as buying of strategic assets 6:17 Harry and James share their thoughts on China buying more ports in different states and if that presents a threat to the state or makes China a smart business operator than others 10:12 James and Monica talk about how China is intensively building economic connections around the world and if that posses national threats to US and Europe 14:32 Monica, Harry and James talk about the disinformation campaigns that China is having against the United States and Europe and how that presents itself as a threat 18:28 Monica, James and Harry talk about how China's extended economic hand to states is being the reason that most states can't counter Chinese influence and what NATO should do 23:41 James and Harry explain why NATO should focus more on the multilateral instead of bilateral in terms of neutralizing China becoming a threat 25:42 Harry also talks about the seven baseline requirements for resilience by NATO to combat non-traditional threats 26:41James reiterate on the point of multilateral and bilateral and what he thinks that NATO should do regarding this 28:41 James talks about sanctions for disinformation, what NATO should do with regard to this and what China reaction would be 30:15 Harry, James and Monica all share their thoughts on if NATO feels like China is a threat like Russia and how other allies of NATO feel and if it's a good thing 33:34 Monica and Harry predict what would be the outcome if China and Russia worked together and if other states should be worried about that 37:52 James, Monica and Harry share their predictions on what NATO will do and what China will do in response to their paper and rethinking paper that NATO recognize China as a threat, analyze it and take action Shows Mentioned: https://www.atlanticcouncil.org/content-series/nato20-2020/build-an-atlantic-pacific-partnership/ https://www.atlanticcouncil.org/ https://twitter.com/hashtag/strongerwithallies?lang=en ASEAN: https://asean.org/ Quotes Mentioned: “NATO has been asleep at the wheel, but so is the rest of the world.” “It is predicted that Southeast Asia will be the new place for global supply chains.” “We can't get a consensus on everything.” “We have a really complex economic interdependence that crisscrosses the entire world.” “We must compete where we must and cooperate where we can.” “Russia also is afraid of China too.” “China has one of the greatest military forces in the world right now.” Guests Social Media Links: James Hildebrand: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/jamesdhildebrand/ Monica Michiko Sato: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/mmsato/ Website: https://monicamichikosato.wordpress.com/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/_mmsato?lang=en Harry W.S. Since his graduation from dental school in 1980, Dr. Douglas Schulz has spent thousands of hours training in advanced dental techniques and procedures. He was one of the first dentists in the Kansas City area to offer the breakthrough CEREC 3D technology, a tooth restoration system that allows a dentist to provide permanent, all ceramic crowns in a single office visit. Dr. Schulz is so proficient in the use of this technology that he routinely trains other dentists in the technique. A true humanitarian, Dr. Schulz has contributed his dental skills to the Pacific Partnership, a charitable mission with the U.S. Navy to bring medical and dental care to those in need across the entire Pacific region.
