In this episode, host Robert "Bob" Pizzini interviews retired Navy Commander and PhD Joseph Dituri, also known as "Dr. Deep Sea." Joseph, a Navy diver and engineering duty officer, served 28 years, during which he earned a master's in astronautical engineering and led deep submergence and submarine rescue capabilities. He later contributed to the development of the SEAL Dry Combat Submersible at SOCOM. Joseph shares his background, which involved growing up between New York and Italy, developing a strong work ethic, and entering Navy diving through early assignments and mentorship. Following his Navy career, he obtained a PhD in biomedical engineering, specializing in life support and hyperbaric/hypobaric medicine, and authored works, including hyperbaric medicine guidance. He achieved a Guinness World Record with Project Neptune 100 by living underwater for 100 days. This endeavor aimed to study the prolonged effects of hyperbaric conditions, promote ocean preservation, and inspire STEM education. Dr. Joseph also recounts his recovery from a traumatic brain injury using a multimodal protocol, discusses the safety and mechanisms of hyperbaric treatment, and defines leadership as a practice of giving back through knowledge and mentorship. Learn about all of these and more nuggets of insight in this latest episode of the Elevate Your Leadership podcast. KEY TAKEAWAYS Work ethic is foundational — Joe's parents modeled relentless hard work with zero tolerance for laziness, which made military culture feel natural from day one. Diversity of thought is what actually solves problems — background and upbringing shape how you think, not just who you are. Healing TBI (and most serious injuries) requires a combination approach — no single treatment works; hyperbaric oxygen, CBT, physical therapy, neurofeedback, and grounding all played a role in Joe's recovery. Residual self-image is a hidden danger after major life transitions — losing your military identity without replacing it can lead to crisis; look inward and redefine yourself early. The ocean is an untapped pharmacy — a compound discovered at the bottom of the Mariana Trench showed partial Alzheimer's-fighting properties; we've barely explored what's there. Living underwater proved hyperbaric pressure improves mental health markers — PTSD, anxiety, and sleep scores all improved after 100 days at depth. Leadership is knowledge transfer — accumulate wisdom, then give it away generously; your name is irrelevant, but what you pass on lives forever. Constant, never-ending improvement — the only goal is to be better than you were yesterday. QUOTES Leadership is basically giving back to whoever you're around, whatever knowledge you have." — Dr. Joe Dituri "Diversity of thought — that's where we miss the boat. I don't care about your color or your gender. I care that we solve the problem." "Nobody will remember my name in a hundred years. But hopefully some of that wisdom left me and went to somebody." "The drug company model is change one thing. The real human model is change everything and fix the f***ing problem." "Hyperbaric oxygen doesn't cure anything. It just helps your body heal itself." "I'm looking at the man in the mirror — and I'm asking him to change his ways. That's the work." "Science wins over BS. You gotta do the science." "Permission granted, Aquanaut — fix the problem." — Admiral McRaven to Dr. Dituri "When I went into the military, it was like — you want me to wake up early and never quit? I can do this. This is like being at home." Episode 244 of the Transition Drill Podcast explores the power of working backwards from a goal for veterans and first responders navigating the complexities of career shifts. You'll hear retired Navy Commander and helicopter pilot Jeremy Vellon on overcoming the friction of being an outsider, and what it takes to build a successful post-service life by finding your people.Jeremy's journey started in Brooklyn, inspired by a trip to the movies with his father to see Top Gun. That moment sparked a lifelong commitment to naval aviation. His father didn't just offer support; he laid out a clear roadmap of the grades, athletic milestones, and leadership skills required to reach the Naval Academy. Jeremy took that advice to heart, spending his youth working backwards from that singular objective despite being younger and smaller than his peers.Throughout his twenty-year career in the Navy, Jeremy leaned into the discipline of setting preconditions for success. Set to deploy on September 19, 2011, his unit was one of the first to go active after 9/11; deploying immediately to Afghanistan. He faced the harsh realities of service, including the loss of friends, which grounded his professional outlook in the gravity of the mission. This mindset of service and sacrifice was a family legacy, shared with his father who served during the Vietnam era. After retiring in 2018, Jeremy transitioned into a new chapter that prioritized his family and individual growth. Building on his military experience and his MBA from the University of Michigan, he embarked on a new Human Resources career, with a stop at Amazon, he was building his own HR Consulting company. But while he was focused on his career, he was not focused on himself. Then one day he struggled physically to get out of bed. With his wife's prompting and the need to help care for his son, who has Cerebral Palsy, he realized he needed to put focus back on his personal fitness. That caused a new career pivot, and he and his wife are now owners of a Burn Bootcamp Fitness center. What happens when you sit down to meditate expecting peace, love, and calm … and instead find yourself flooded with old memories, grief, fear, or painful experiences you thought you had moved past? In this live episode of the Always Connected podcast, we'll talk honestly about why meditation can sometimes bring unresolved trauma to the surface, what it means when this happens, and how to move through it without feeling overwhelmed or like you are “doing it wrong.” We'll explore the difference between opening spiritually and becoming flooded emotionally, how to stay grounded and safe when difficult memories arise, and why what surfaces may not be a setback at all, but part of healing. One of my favorite things to do when I was younger was have play dates. There was something so magical about not having a plan… just co-creating the day. We'd get creative, eat wild snacks (hello pudding pops with peanut butter and fluff), and give roles to all of our imaginary friends. This conversation with Suzanne Giesemann felt like a spiritual play date. Minus the pudding pops… I know, very 80's of me.

In this conversation, Suzanne sits down with philosopher and consciousness researcher Dr. Christopher Bache to explore what altered states of consciousness can reveal about the deeper nature of reality. Their discussion moves far beyond the method used to access these states and focuses instead on what those experiences suggest about the universe itself: that consciousness may be fundamental, that love is the connective tissue of oneness, and that humanity may be part of a much longer evolutionary process. It's a thoughtful conversation about who we are, why life can be difficult, and how a larger view of consciousness can change the way we understand both suffering and meaning. Julia Hartley-Brewer speaks to Conservative Party leader Kemi Badenoch about Donald Trump's criticism of Keir Starmer, the importance of preserving the UK–US “special relationship”, and whether Britain should have taken a different stance on US operations and access to Diego Garcia. Badenoch argues Labour has failed to plan ahead on defence, calls for greater North Sea oil and gas extraction, and attacks a potential fuel duty rise, while dismissing talk of “closer ties” with the EU as a slogan rather than a growth strategy. Later, former Royal Navy commander Tom Sharpe OBE assesses escalating risks around the Strait of Hormuz, the operational impact of decades-long cuts, and why the UK's mixed messaging means it is involved but not commanding events. Also: a Gail's Bakery row after a Guardian column called one bakery's location near a Palestinian-owned business as an "act of heavy-handed aggression". In this episode of Always Connected, we look at something every one of us does without realizing it: the mind's tendency to turn ordinary situations into dramatic stories. A comment, a delay, a misunderstanding—and suddenly the mind is off and running, filling in motives, predicting outcomes, and stirring up emotions that may have nothing to do with what's actually happening. When we learn to recognize this pattern, something important shifts. We don't have to suppress the story or fight with it; we simply see it for what it is. From that clearer space, we can respond with far more wisdom and far less stress. Join me as we explore how to notice when the story is trying to take over and how staying present keeps you connected to guidance, clarity, and the deeper awareness that is always available.Suzanne Giesemann is a former Navy Commander-turned spiritual teacher, author, documentarian and evidential medium. When someone dies, the question that follows is almost universal: Where are they now? In this episode of ALWAYS CONNECTED, we explore why the idea of someone being “gone” doesn't match how connection actually works. Through real conversations and lived examples from mediumship, we look at what continues after death, why love still reaches us, and how connection doesn't require special abilities—only openness to what's already present. You've been meditating. You've been clearing your mind. And nothing's happening. What if the problem isn't that you're doing it wrong, it's that you're doing exactly what prevents connection from occurring? A former Navy Commander turned evidence-based medium and spiritual leader explains why emptiness isn't always the goal, and what one simple reframe could change about your entire spiritual practice.Episode Overview Suzanne Giesemann doesn't fit the spiritual teacher mold, and that's precisely why her work matters. As a former US Navy Commander who served as aide to the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, she brought military-grade discipline to a grief-fueled quest for connection after losing her stepdaughter to a lightning strike. The result? Undeniable evidence of consciousness beyond death, and a grounded, replicable approach to mediumship that anyone can learn. This conversation isn't about belief. It's about what happens when you stop trying so hard to quiet your mind and start getting curious about what wants to fill the space. What You'll DiscoverThe counterintuitive meditation instruction that shifts you from "trying to be empty" to "inviting connection", and why this distinction changes everything for frustrated meditatorsWhy discipline beats mysticism when it comes to developing intuition, and how Suzanne's military training accidentally prepared her for mediumshipThe "Hara test" for knowing whether you're receiving guidance or just making things up (hint: it's not in your head or your heart)What actually happens when you ask for proof and the universe delivers, including a story about coffee creamer that'll make you rethink coincidenceThe real reason people don't connect with their loved ones across the veil (it's not lack of ability, it's a misunderstanding about what meditation is for)How to handle fear when opening yourself spiritually, including Suzanne's encounter with "creatures with talons" and the one response that dissolved them instantlyA 3-minute daily practice (the "Sip of the Divine") that requires zero spiritual background and works even if you "can't meditate"Why This Conversation Is Different Most spiritual teachers will tell you to sit, breathe, and wait. Suzanne tells you to sit, breathe, and invite. She doesn't peddle certainty or demand faith, she offers systems, evidence, and the kind of pragmatic wisdom that comes from spending 20 years in uniform before spending 15+ years bridging worlds. If you've been spinning your wheels trying to "get it right," this episode offers permission to stop performing emptiness and start experiencing connection. You're Not Gullible...You're Curious There's no woo-woo bypass here. Suzanne's path began with skepticism, required proof at every turn, and continues to demand evidence. If you're the kind of person who wants spiritual awakening without abandoning logic, this conversation will feel like relief. Questioning isn't a problem. It's how you know you're paying attention.Listen Now Ready to stop clearing the room when someone's about to knock? This episode offers a different instruction manual, one that trusts your capacity for connection and respects your need for proof.Guest: For more from Suzanne Giesemann, visit suzannegiesemann.com and explore her YouTube channel for practical guidance, evidence-based teaching, and tools like her virtual librarian "Grace."The Skeptic Metaphysicians is a pragmatic spirituality podcast for curious minds exploring the unknown without abandoning critical thinking.
