Episode 35 of the podcast takes us to Shiga Kogen Highlands in Nagano Prefecture. Declared a UNESCO Biopshere Reserve in 1980, Shiga Kogen is an alpine landscape which includes major peaks such as Mount Shiga and Mount Kusatsu-Shirane – one of Japan's most active volcanoes – renowned for its biodiversity, wetlands and distinct seasonal beauty. In this episode I speak with Yokota Shinji – a talented landscape and nature photographer who regularly accompanies guests into the alpine landscape of Shiga Kogen. He provides nature tours, photography tours and workshops for both Japanese and English-speaking guests and as such is an ideal person to accompany us to Shiga in this episode. Shiga Kogen Highlands sit within Joshinetsu Kogen National Park and will of course be familiar to many listeners as the ski resort of that name – Shiga Kogen Mountain Resort – is the largest ski resort in Japan – something we covered in Episode 13 of the pod while nearby Shiga Kogen Brewery – something we covered in Episode 6 of the pod - takes its name for this area of the mountains. Today's chat is however all about the Biosphere Reserve. Shiga Kogen Highlands is one of ten UNESCO Biosphere Reserves in Japan, a global system of reserves awarded that status in recognition of their biological diversity and as models of mutual beneficial relationships between people and nature.  For more information and to view Shinji's beautiful photography, please visit his website and follow him on Instagram and his YouTube channel. You can also find more information, including how to get there, at the official Shiga Kogen Highlands website along with Shinji's images on the episode page of the Snow Country Stories Japan website. Snow Country Stories Japan is a bi-weekly podcast about life and travel in Japan's legendary 'yukiguni'. My guest today is psychologist-turned-interior-desiger, Anita Yokota. When she embarked on her career as a therapist and saw clients in their own homes, she began to comprehend the impact of their environments on their mental and emotional health. Her in-home visits exposed her to a variety of home environments, and she soon noticed a correlation between the state of a home and the emotional climate within it. This insight led her to help clients organize their living spaces, which in turn reduced tensions within the family. After 20 years in therapy, she made a pivot to her creative passion for interior design. She has created her own home therapy method, an approach that combines tangible organization with cognitive feelings, and she's just released her first book, also called Home Therapy. In our conversation, Anita shares story after story about how to heal yourself and your relationship using intentional design. Click here to access the free "start here" mini series! In this episode, Anita Yokota discusses how our living spaces impact our mental wellbeing and offers tips to organize and declutter our homes in a more intentional way. Some key points:Our homes can make us feel more secure, calm and organized which improves our mental health and relationships. Intentionally designing spaces to connect with ourselves and others can be therapeutic.Clutter and disorganization cause stress while too much perfection can make a space feel sterile. Aim for a balance that allows you to function well and connect with family.Natural light, proper lighting and aromatherapy can instantly uplift a space. Recessed lighting is an affordable option.Using the "ski slope method" of organizing in small, bite-sized chunks makes the task less overwhelming.Family photos and memories in a space can serve as visual cues to pause and appreciate ourselves and each other, improving communication. The "holding box" method helps people decide what to keep or toss by embracing ambivalence for a period of time to determine how an item could intentionally serve them.More about Anita:Anita Yokota is a therapist turned interior designer and author of the bestselling book, Home Therapy. As a busy mom of three and the founder of Chaos N' Cookies, keeping moms from crumbling is my main objective. Randy is from Hawaii originally which helped greatly in his USAFA experience. Upon graduation he was initially a MAC pilot flying C-130's in Little Rock and Yokota. After his first assignments he got a very interesting job flying as a test pilot at Hickam recovering falling satellite packages with an unusual method he describes. His success with the GAMBIT project led him to Andrews where he flew VIPs in the C-20. Here he also has a hair-raising close call which earned him an Air Medal personally from Sec Def. Air Attache in Thailand followed by return to Andrews ended his active duty time. Upon retirement he became a corp pilot for JC Penny and others. Some of the later recording gets choppy, (thanks cell sites!), but I believe you will enjoy the full story of Randy Chang.

And so, she teaches her clients how to identify zones in their spaces to create that intentionality and help it come alive.
