Our guest this week is recording artist, author, and podcaster Brady Goodwin Jr., otherwise known as Phanatik! Brady was a member of one of the best Christian hip hop groups ever, The Cross Movement. Brady made headlines last year when he publicly stated that he was no longer a Christian. His new book, “Let There Be Gaslight: Does the Bible Tell the Truth About Our Creation, Fall, and Redemption?” caused quite a stir, and has prompted a big response from the Christian community (just take a look at the response videos on YouTube). We were thrilled to talk with Brady about his musical career, academic pursuits, and his eventual deconstruction! You can find his book on Amazon, and follow him on Instagram (@phanatik_of_cm), Facebook (facebook.com/brady.p.goodwin), and Twitter (@Phanatik).
This split is from 1998 and was very hard to find but we did it so here it is.
We dive in on what is Academic Christianity and our reaction to one of the pioneers Of Christian hip hop living the Faith! Tune in!
In January of 2022, former Christian Hip Hop artist, Brady Goodwin, aka. Phanatik, posted a video in which he renouced his faith. In this episode, Brendan and Seth continue their discussion on this topic and offer their rebuttal to some of the points Mr. Goodwin shared in his video. Brady Goodwin "Phanatik" video. Recently, I was listening to a post by Ambassador of Cross Movement and it was concerning the rapper known as Phanatik, who was also part of Cross Movement. It was disheartening to hear, because of what he represented to the culture of Christian Hip Hop, but nonetheless it is what it is. In this episode, I am addressing the issue of turning one's back on their relationship with Yeshua (Jesus). This is not a podcast of condemnation, but one of enlightenment and hope for restoration and return back to the Way, the Truth and the Life. #Phanatik #PneuPneumaGodcast #NormanBrown #FallingAway #Rapper #Jesus #Cristiano #Dios #bible #God #wordliferadio #prayer #christian #podcast #KevinSamuels Please, give us a 5-Star rating and leave an Inspirational comment, if you are an Apple Podcast listener. We love being positive on The Substance but we had some heavy thing on our hearts that we cover on this week's show. Longtime Christian rapper Phanatik (Brady Goodwin Jr.) recently has denounced the faith and we wanted to both look at his specific situation as well as consider the group of former leaders who have publicly left the faith over the last several years and see what we can learn from it and how we can best respond. That topic leads unfortunately well into our second one, Christian lament. It's something people are talking about a little more now (especially on social media, in response to unending injustices), but it's also something that may traditions are not particularly strong on. If lament has been a regular, healthy part of your religious tradition or personal piety, we would love to hear from you! In recent allegations, published by Rapzilla on January 31, 2022, the music artist known as Gawvi, has been said to have been sending pictures of his genital to women, who are not his wife. Instead of admitting to these actions, Gawvi has decided, as of this moment, to deny anything happening and has been trying to get people to dismiss what he is calling rumors. Following these reports, he was released from Reach Records. At this time it is not clear what his plans are, outside of divorcing his wife, with no grounds, as far as the information received thus far, and not making any statements about repentance, humility, sadness and more. The Bible tells us in Luke 18:14 "every one that exalts himself shall be abased; and he that humbles himself shall be exalted. The Bible also shows in First Peter 5: 5-6 "Likewise, ye younger, submit yourselves unto the elder. Yea, all of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God resists the proud, and gives grace to the humble. Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time." As the days go on we shall see if Gawvi is humble or prideful. In this podcast episode, I will break down some things for us to learn lessons from this situation. Also, I want it to be known that this is not a podcast of condemnation, but of hope for restoration: restoration of Gawvi's marriage and his relationship with the Lord growing stronger. Stay tuned for next week's continuation of this podcast, when I discuss the situation with Phanatik, formerly of Cross Movement in Episode 154. Last week two prominent Christian rappers made statements that shook up the American Christian world. Brady Godwin known as Phanatik of the Chrsitian rap group Cross Movement, says he sent a letter to his church withdrawing his membership and renouncing what he believed and shared for over 30 years. Grammy winning Christian rapper LeCrae wrote a tweet about leaving "politicized Christianity" that led to him losing a performance booking. While blacks are still the most religious group of Christians in America, many are beginning to deconstruct their faith or leave Christianity all together. How should pastors and church leaders address this burgeoning problem? Join Dr. Neal as he discusses this and other topics of the day.
