eDNA with Georgia Nester | The Deep Sea Podcast | Episode 59 “Exploration is about the place, adventurism is about the person, science is about the question” Professor Alan Jamieson In an episode recorded earlier than usual, which is to say not recorded late, and so perhaps recorded right on time?... we are talking about environmental DNA or eDNA. Thom is headed off to Norfolk Island, north of New Zealand, to characterize the unique life in the region and hopefully not be eaten by sharks. Alan's been up to secret things, organizing everyone's lives and, for a change, is recording this episode from the same country as the last one. In the news, Thom and Alan discuss a recent paper about the extent of ocean exploration, the valuable research it was based on, and the unfortunately defeatist tone. There is a lot left to do, but we have done so much! Also in the news: Bottom trawling releases not only organic carbon into the ocean but also pyrite, which reacts with oxygen in the water and reduces the oceans' ability to absorb carbon from the air. An art installation pairs a Sri Lankan artist with JAMSTEC and NuStar Technologies for a collection of steel cubes located 7,000 meters (23,000 feet) below the ocean close to the Marianas Trench. The cubes are housed in a seismic monitoring system designed for registering tectonic plate movements. And finally Al and Thom discuss gene mutation in deep-sea fish and a new paper that gives evidence to an old theory that some deep-sea fish are “ancient survivors,” from dinosaur times, while others are “new immigrants,” post mass extinction. For this month's interview, we speak with Dr. Georgia Nester, a colleague of Alan's from the University of Western Australia, about eDNA (Environmental DNA is any genetic material left behind by organisms in an environment). She talks about how several collection methods, eg.: Niskin bottles, sponges and paper filters, located on the deep-sea lander system, can retrieve different types of eDNA from the deep. Georgia also touches on how diel migrators can really mess with eDNA data, and larvae gave her a surprise when she kept getting hits from very deep-living fish in her surface samples. Georgia even used a water sample to locate surprise eDNA evidence of the Giant Squid in Australian waters, which Al takes as a chance to remind Thom of his Antarctic colossal squid failure. Alan talks about how valuable he thinks eDNA is, how it can give a great snapshot of what can't be seen on the footage or in the submersible, and how it might be able to narrow down species that are difficult to catch, like Bassozetus cusk eels. Tonight's episode of Talking Guitars was all about inspiration—how gear fuels creativity! Every time I get a new piece of gear, it sparks something. A riff, a melody, a full-on song. That's the magic. I shared how, when I first started playing guitar, I was nervous—where would the ideas come from? But as it turns out, the gear brings the music. Every single time. We also dove into some killer news: Billie Joe Armstrong recently played Randy Rhoads' “Crazy Train” solo with one of his side projects—and absolutely crushed it! We had to talk about that legendary crossover moment. Then I plugged in the Fender Acoustasonic through the Joyo Acoustic Amp, cranked it up, and played some of my newest riffs for you all—fresh, raw, and straight from the soul. Oh, and we wished YouTube a big Happy 20th Birthday! If you dig gear talk, guitar riffs, and epic moments like these—smash that subscribe button and join us on the journey. More music, more stories, more YOU.

Interview by Kris PetersHe may have been taken from us far too soon, but the legacy and memory of guitar great Randy Rhoads will live forever. Rhoads' name is revered in the music world, where, for a period from the late 1970s through to the early 1980s, his playing and presence left a shadow of brilliance that is as strong today as it was back then. The virtuoso guitarist, who co-founded Quiet Riot and propelled Ozzy Osbourne's solo career with Blizzard of Ozz (1980) and Diary of a Madman (1981), remains one of heavy metal's most important figures. Before his untimely death in 1982 at just 25, Rhoads redefined guitar-driven rock, blending classical influences with blistering metal to pioneer the neoclassical metal subgenre. His iconic riffs, featured in timeless songs such as Crazy Train and Mr. Crowley, and innovative techniques, including two-handed tapping, vibrato bar dive bombs, and intricate scales, set a new standard for the 80s metal scene and inspired countless guitarists.Recognised with a 2021 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction, Rhoads' legacy endures as a cornerstone of heavy metal evolution, with his signature Jackson Rhoads guitar symbolizing his revolutionary impact. To most of this current generation and beyond, the life and music of Randy Rhoads will always be that of past reflection, unable to bear witness to the great man on stage with precious little preserved on camera or film. But this December, thanks to XMusic, fans can get as close to the glory days of guitar as possible when A TRIBUTE TO RANDY RHOADS - The Stories and Music Behind the Legend - hits this country for a performance that includes live renditions of Rhoads' finest moments as well as an in-depth Q&A session. This is more than just a tribute performance, with Rhoads' long-time friend, confidant and co-founder of Quiet Riot, Kelly Garni, heading the evening alongside Rhoads' first-ever guitar teacher, Scott Shelley. It promises to be an unforgettable celebration of Randy Rhoads - a true guitar legend - whose influence still resonates in every power chord and soaring solo played today. HEAVY had the pleasure of speaking with Kelly Garni ahead of the tour, and among the topics of conversation was the sheer magnitude of putting together and the need for a performance of this scale."I don't pursue these things," he stressed. "People come to me, and they ask me to do them. There's a very, very large fan base for Randy Rhoads, and pretty much I'm the last man standing (laughs). Of course, I don't have Kevin (Dubrow, vocalist), who I sure do miss. Although if you read my book, you wouldn't believe that in a million years, but boy do I miss him. He was a great, great guide for me, and I learned a real lot from Kevin. But anyway, I've been approached several times, and I've been all around the country over the last few years here in America, and now Japan twice. People want anything left of Randy, and I guess I'm what you get. It's an honour to represent my best friend. Of course, anybody would do that for their best friend, if they're any kind of a friend. And so, since people are so excited to hear that music again, I happily oblige and go and do these shows."Garni had many tales to tell, among them how Alice Cooper shaped much of what was to eventually become the sound of Quiet Riot, albeit without having ever met the two impressionable youths."When we saw Cooper, we said we're gonna be rock stars, whether anybody likes it or not," he smiled. "And you know, in my mind, Randy did, but I never really did. And I never really wanted to. And that's okay because things had changed over the years to where I didn't want to be in the music business any more, but because of my association with Randy, I find myself very heavily involved (laughs). And I gotta say, to see and meet all the fans who come to these shows is really, really something that makes you feel good in your heart and your soul."In the full interview, Kelly addressed the excitement among fans and the importance of celebrating Rhoads' legacy, highlighting the involvement of key figures from Randy's early career to enhance the authenticity of the tribute. He spoke about the rest of the band, including musicians from Snake Bite Whiskey and the Van Halen tribute band Van Hager, along with a Q&A session featuring Scott Shelley, Randy's first guitar teacher. We spoke about the Q&A session and the personal nature of the questions and how emotional it could get.Reflecting on his and Randy's musical journeys, Kelly shared insights into their early influences and the challenges they faced, including Randy's struggles with confidence and vocal abilities. He recounted the band's evolution, including a misguided image overhaul that led them to adopt a look that felt disconnected from their original sound. We also spoke about important moments of Randy's life and the impression he left on others, including Kelly, the ever-lasting legacy left behind by his untimely death and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

John 5’s KISS collection is next level—so much so that he’s opening it up to the public in May for a special museum-style walkthrough in Los Angeles. But don’t expect a little shrine in a basement somewhere. We’re talking full-blown KISS history from 1973 to 1983 when the band was under Bill Aucoin’s management and before they ditched the makeup for Creatures of the Night. “It’s priceless,” John 5 says. “There’s stuff in here that even Gene didn’t know existed because it was made in places like South America, Australia, and Japan.” Oh, and speaking of Gene Simmons—I had to ask: how much would he charge Gene to see his own memorabilia? John laughed. “Oh my God. Gene really enjoys this stuff. There’s so much he’s never seen before.” John 5’s first meeting with Gene Simmons? Not exactly what you’d expect from a die-hard fan. Picture this: a 14-year-old John 5, waiting outside the Pontchartrain Hotel in Detroit, hoping to meet his rock god before a KISS show at Joe Louis Arena. Gene walks past. No autograph. Nothing. “So I jump in the elevator with him,” John says. “I hold out my booklet and marker, hoping for a signature.” The elevator doors open to Gene’s floor. Gene finally looks at him. “You want me to sign that?” And what does young John 5 say? “No, it’s okay.” WHAT?! “I was just so mad that he walked past me,” John laughs. “But yeah, that really happened.” March 19 marks 43 years since we lost Randy Rhoads, and John 5 had nothing but praise for the legendary Ozzy Osbourne guitarist. “Randy was an anomaly. He changed the game. It was like seeing the invention of the microwave or an electric car—something totally different that blew people’s minds.” Randy didn’t just step into Ozzy’s band and carry on the Black Sabbath sound. He redefined it. “That riff in Crazy Train? It’s gonna live forever.” It's always great to get "5" on the show.

This week I was able to share this interview thanks to the awesome Steven Pynnaker from Mormon Book Review. This interview is a small snippet from a 24 part series available to watch. This story shocked me! Of course, we can never know both sides and I acknowledge this.Nevertheless this is an interesting story one like I have never heard before. The fact that the LDS church is kicking out TBM's aka True Blue Mormons is something I have not seen before. As it comes out in this interview, they are not the only ones! Why would a church literally hemorrhaging members do this? This church, LDS Inc. Is not the good ole Mormon church of old.Infiltrations and Government associations are everywhere!Come join us for this talk and let me know in the comments what you think after watching the series. In our society, we don't know how to talk about a lot of super important things. We don't learn, because we're not taught. And that's due to longstanding beliefs that we're supposed to handle things a certain way.Think about what happens if your spouse or life partner dies. You're expected to have a period of enforced mourning. You look weird at best, or heartless at worst, if you keep going to work rather than take bereavement leave. Heaven forbid you take a vacation or something. They say it's supposed to be funerals, wearing all-black, home alone miserable. Meanwhile, your life continues to tick on by.Shari Begun had the learned experience that helped her break this mold when her husband died, but she couldn't do it without a permission slip. In different ways, this both held her back and inspired her career and overall path in life. After her parents divorced, she was primarily raised by her mother, a hairdresser who along with a younger business partner started her salon in a time before single women could get business credit on their own. First, Shari learned the importance of learning and education. As you'll hear, her house was basically a library full of books, including THREE sets of encyclopedias! From her situation, she learned independence and being strong. Although the seeds were planted early on, she just recently got her “permission slip” to become a confident, transparent, sharing leader – a recognized mentor to women in STEM-related careers making their voices heard and advancing in the workplace.Shari went to college for electrical engineering, inspired by a family friend, a wealthy independent single woman who worked in the field. However, by junior year, she discovered she hated electrical engineering. Conversations with her college roommate's boyfriend, a mechanical engineer who had gone into sales and become successful at it, led her to a sales career. Shari's career blossomed as she rose to become the first female customer-facing VP in her company, in a very male-dominated STEM-related industry. She also grew in her calling as a mentor to women in STEM. Everything seemed fine. But five months later, she abruptly learned why Fine is a 4-Letter Word.It was Shari's birthday. As she and her husband returned from her celebration, he started having trouble breathing. 45 minutes later, he died. This was an inflection point. Career-wise, her ship had just come in. She was devastated over losing her husband, but wanted to keep on working. What would people think of her?In a moment, you'll discover how this moment of catastrophe, catharsis, and catalysis came together to make this Shari's ultimate moment (so far) and change a lot of people's lives. But first, she needed to get a permission slip. Why?Shari's hype song is "Crazy Train" by Ozzy Osbourne.Resources:Shari Begun's LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/sharibegun/ Also, check out Episode #140, Replacing Fine with F*ck Off! with P.J. Bob DaisleyDespite repeated efforts to scrub his name from the history books, bassist, composer and lyricist Bob Daisley is universally celebrated (and rightfully so) as a creative force behind some of heavy metal's most defining songs and albums (you've heard of “Crazy Train,” eh?). He joins us to discuss the writing and recording of “Blizzard of Ozz,” “Diary of a Madman,” “Bark at the Moon” and other albums that made Ozzy Osbourne a superstar. We also discuss his theory behind the fatal Randy Rhoads plane crash; the inspiration of Jimi Hendrix; his time in Rainbow and Uriah Heep; his book, “For Facts Sake;” and that time Bon Scott bummed a beer, but left behind some cash like a gentleman. https://youtube.com/live/IjPHR2jXGGc?feature=share On Saturday (October 19), Ozzy Osbourne was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a solo artist, marking his second recognition by the institution, following his 2006 induction with BLACK SABBATH. Actor and TENACIOUS D frontman Jack Black inducted Ozzy, calling him "the greatest frontman in the history of rock 'n' roll." Black recalled seeing the cover of Ozzy's debut solo album, Blizzard Of Ozz, saying, "It was the most metal thing I had ever seen, and I didn't even know what metal was. Then I went back to Ozzy's BLACK SABBATH albums, and I thought, 'Unholy shit, this guy invented heavy metal—the darkest, heaviest stuff the world had ever heard.'" Seated on a throne, Osbourne humbly accepted the award, saying: "Well, here we are. I can't believe it myself. Let me get the thank-yous out of the way. I'd like to thank everyone who voted me into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame for my solo work. A great thank you from the bottom of my heart. My fans have been so loyal over the years, and I cannot thank them enough. I've been lucky to play with some of the world's greatest musicians, and many of them are here tonight. But I have to especially mention Randy Rhoads. If I hadn't met Randy, I don't think I'd be sitting here now. And, more than anyone, I have to thank my wife Sharon, who saved my life, and my grandbabies and babies. I love them all." With his brief speech concluded, Ozzy handed the mic back to Jack Black, and an all-star performance followed. The backing band featured RED HOT CHILI PEPPERS drummer Chad Smith, METALLICA bassist (and former Ozzy band member) Robert Trujillo, producer Andrew Watt, and keyboardist Adam Wakeman. They were joined by TOOL's Maynard James Keenan and Wolfgang Van Halen for a powerful rendition of “Crazy Train.” Zakk Wylde and country star Jelly Roll then took the stage for "Mama, I'm Coming Home," and Billy Idol closed the set with "No More Tears," accompanied by his longtime guitarist Steve Stevens. Sammy Hagar and Slash Light Up the Stage with “Hot Blooded” at the 2024 Rock Hall Induction for Foreigner The 2024 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony became a night to remember when rock icons Sammy Hagar and Slash joined forces to pay tribute to the legendary band Foreigner. As the hall reverberated with excitement, the duo tore into a blistering performance of Foreigner's timeless classic, “Hot Blooded,” sending shockwaves through the audience. With Sammy Hagar's unmistakable voice soaring through the iconic chorus and Slash's signature Les Paul riffs electrifying the crowd, it was a performance that honored Foreigner's legacy while bringing their music into a new era. The chemistry between these two rock veterans was undeniable, as they traded licks and vocal lines, breathing fresh life into the 1978 hit. Hagar, no stranger to the Rock Hall after his own induction with Van Halen, shared his admiration for Foreigner during the ceremony. "These guys paved the way for so many of us," Hagar remarked, "and it's an honor to be here, rocking out to a song that still gets the blood pumping after all these years." Slash echoed the sentiment, acknowledging the influence Foreigner had on the next generation of rock musicians. "Their songwriting, their energy, it's all a part of the DNA of rock 'n' roll." Foreigner's induction has been a long time coming, and this powerhouse collaboration made sure it was celebrated in style. As the final notes of “Hot Blooded” rang out, the crowd was on their feet, a testament to Foreigner's enduring impact on rock history, and the incredible performance delivered by two of the genre's most enduring stars. Whether you were there in person or watching from home, this performance will go down as one of the standout moments in the Rock Hall's history—a true celebration of rock and roll's past, present, and future.

Send us a textWhat happens when a movie starring Nicholas Cage as a flame-headed biker fails to ignite the same excitement as Iron Man? This week, we roll up our sleeves and prepare for Halloween with a critical and comedic review of the 2007 Marvel superhero film, Ghost Rider! We kick off by pitting Ghost Rider against Iron Man, marveling at the stark differences in quality, execution, and impact, even though they were released just a year apart. We take you through the wild ride of Johnny Blaze's transformation, the lackluster portrayal of the Devil by Peter Fonda, and the baffling transition from young Johnny Blaze to Nicholas Cage. Prepare for some laughs as we highlight the absurdity of the plot and characters—from Johnny's implausible discovery of his father's cancer diagnosis to the daredevil's contradictory stunts. We dive into the film's few redeeming moments, like the high-octane motorcycle jump set to "Crazy Train" and the introduction of quirky characters like Blaze's manager, Mac, and the rain-emerging villain, Dark Duskman. We don't shy away from scrutinizing the dynamics of the elemental villains and poking fun at the odd interactions and props, such as Johnny Blaze's “swagger stick” and Eva Mendez's character, Roxy's, lost demeanor. As we bring our analysis to a close, we take a hilarious journey through Johnny Blaze's epic motorcycle chases, his playful banter with Roxy, and the quirky elements Nicolas Cage brought to the character. We also touch on the film's chaotic narrative, jarring pacing, and the peculiar logic behind Ghost Rider's abilities. Finally, we wrap up with some chatter about TV shows and movies, including the latest season of "Only Murders in the Building" and the new "Borderlands" movie. Join us for a rollercoaster of an episode filled with critiques, laughter, and reflections on this chaotic Marvel film.Written Lovingly with AIBe our friend!Dan: @shakybaconTony: @tonydczechAnd follow the podcast on IG: @hatewatchingDAT
On this episode of Prisoners of Rock and Roll, we're heading into the dark, twisted world of Ozzy Osbourne and diving deep into two of the most legendary heavy metal albums of all time: Blizzard of Ozz and Diary of a Madman. Make no mistake: these albums kick ass. But, like anything involving the Prince of Darkness, there's more to the story than meets the eye. Sure, these records gave us unforgettable tracks like “Crazy Train” and “Over the Mountain,” but behind the scenes, things were a total circus. After recording Diary of a Madman, bassist Bob Daisley and drummer Lee Kerslake were kicked out of the band, setting off a firestorm of lawsuits for royalties. And just when you thought things couldn't get any wilder, Sharon Osbourne decided to go back years later and had their parts re-recorded by different musicians — all without really telling anyone. Talk about rewriting history! So crank up the volume, headbang like you mean it, and join us as we break down the music, the madness, and the mayhem behind Blizzard of Ozz and Diary of a Madman. This episode's going to be a wild ride through two albums that rocked the metal world and stirred up plenty of controversy along the way so put down that bat and open a beer. Let's hit it!
