We look at the statements made about athletes and others who can perform in the biggest moments and it is said they must have mental strength to perform in those conditions. This is actually a myth and is more about preparation. Listen to examine this concept.
As the Holidays approach what better topic than how to be a good friend. How to understand your friends needs and what role does cognative age play?
This week we look at the Spotlight Affect. When you walk in a room and all eyes are on you, how much of that is perception and how much is reality? What is this perception doing to our psychy, and how is it affecting our lives

We talk about making those decisions for the now or waiting until later for a bigger reward. Just like the experiment when you tell a child you can have 1 marshmallow now or 2 marshmallows later. How do these decisions build on each other and how do you adapt to a wrong decision.
Looking at happiness you have to be honest with yourself and know what your core values are, the more in allignment that is the happier you will be, if that is in conflict is when issues arise and happiness takes a back seat.
What is happiness? How do we know how to achieve it, what are the tools to find it and what do we mean by sythesizing the moment over time? All this a so much more in this episode.
In our next installment we talk about the Difference between Feedback and Validation. Which means more and lasts longer and why. We look at a few techniques on how to use this powerful tool.
In the third part of our series we take a look at how hormones are affected by the decisions we make, and how in turn this can affect us and our bodies as well.
Last week we talked about self talk and this week we take that and how we use it to make decisions in our life.
Phil and Scott talk about how self talk is the most influential person in your life. It is important to understand this as the way you treat yourself will determine how successful you will be. The Self Talk voice has the maturity of a 4 year old and reacts just like that, so that helps us understand how to work with that "person" in our head.
In this week's episode of Healthspan Academy, I chatted with CrossFit Games coach James Jowsey. We had a great conversation about programming, injury prevention, and nutrition. James talked about programming for building tissue tolerance and sustainability over the long term. We also talked about helping athletes and clients distinguish between good and bad pain to optimize performance while minimizing injury risk. Coach James Jowsey is a Sports Coach & Therapist who specializes in human movement for the treatment of injuries and increasing performance. He is the Head Coach of the Trinity Programme in Red Pill Generic and Founder of the JamesJowseyTraining.com and has trained some high level CrossFit Games athletes, including Sam Briggs and Emma McQuaid. Before beginning his fitness industry career, James was a professional goalkeeper playing in the Manchester United reserve team. Shortly afterward, James started as a personal trainer in 2005, and became fascinated with how all his clients moved differently and got different responses from the same exercises. These practical day to day observations sent James on a path to understand human function alongside a Level 5 Advanced Sports Therapy Diploma. Coach James found his love of CrossFit in 2006 and began to use his learnings helping CrossFitters to regain lost movement patterns. With over 17 years of experience in the fitness industry and working with athletes at the pinnacle of their sporting career, ranging from CrossFit, English Premier League and Championship football and Premiership rugby players. He has spent years being invited to travel around Europe to work with CrossFit Games champions, Games competitors, European Regional athletes, and CrossFit gym members. The majority of his work comes from the CrossFit world, but James has also worked with professional MMA fighters and professional footballers, as well as amateur enthusiasts from cycling, triathlon, running, and golf. James' most recent project is the SQUATFit service founded with friend and mentor Phil Mansfield. Find out more about Coach James on his website www.jamesjowseytraining.com and on Instagram @jamesjowseytraining. *** Please note that the content discussed in this podcast is intended for self-education and is not to be interpreted as medical advice.
Phil walks us through why some people thrive with procrastination and other need to be more systematic. Can great athletes be procrastinators or can the be more systematic or both, how do both co-exist? Phil explains one is a piano pusher and one is a piano player and both can be great. Phil famously uses his psychology knowledge when coaching both elite athletes and general box goers like you and I. Phil Mansfield introduces us to toxix positivity. You may wonder what this is and sometimes good intentions are not recieved how we think they should be, why is this. You will learn why in this episode of the Clydesdale Media Mindset with Phil Mansfield Phil Mansfield has been coaching elite athletes for several years as a partner in Red Pill Training. Phil famously uses his psychology knowledge when coaching both elite athletes and general box goers like you and I. “Knowing yourself is the beginning of all wisdom” - Aristotle “Knowing others is intelligence. Knowing yourself is true wisdom. Mastering others is strength. Mastering yourself is true power” Lao Tzu Or simply “Know thyself” Socrates It doesn't matter if you were born millenia ago like Aristotle, Lao Tzu, or Socrates, or born today like you. Knowing yourself is the first step you must take in order to fulfil your potential as an athlete and as a human. In this podcast, Phil Mansfield, Coach at Red Pill Training, frequently asks the question “do you push the piano, or play the piano?” What he's getting at is something like “are you someone who thrives in grunt work, routine, and discipline, or are you someone who thrives in chaos and the unknown?” By knowing this, you know how to structure your training and recovery, and even how to think about your self-talk. But self-knowledge doesn't stop there of course. What really drives you to be your best? What are your fears? What are your worst habits and best attributes? What do you spend undue time worrying over? What is the story at the heart of your performance challenges? Who do you believe you are? How has time and experience trained your nervous system's default setting? What are you really imagining before a lift? If you don't know these things, you will be a leaf in the wind; blown about by external circumstance; lacking any say in your outcome. At the end of the day, you can only control the controllable. The only controllable is you. So begin a kind of study. Part psychological, part philosophical, part sports performance, part anthropological. Make notes and question why you're doing what you're doing. Get to know who you really are from a different perspective. Become the observer, as someone once said to me. Phil is a true gem of a human and we cover some really fertile ground for athletes. It's always fascinating to find someone who says similar things, but from a different perspective to yourself. This is what I found in this conversation.
Hear why Saxon Panchik moved to Nashville, why him and his brother Spencer need different things and is this a permanent move? Culture in SportDifferent sports display different cultural characteristics.Phil Mansfield and James Jowsey explore their experience of different sports to highlight the varying cultures in each one. From sportswear to admitting injury, every sport is different. Is there an opportunity to learn from one another?Intro…One of the things that fascinates me the most. One sport proves you can do it, one sport says you can’t.Everyone thinks they look good in their sports kit.18:00Culture of training25:00Benefits of multi sports training camps26:00CrossFit Athletes competing at the Weightlifting Commonwealth Games34:00Ability to lose35:00Cultural Injury in sportPain threshold – can it be trained through the culture of sport?51:00Display of pain in different sports53:00What is the worlds toughest / hardest sport?58:41What is the best dressed sport?
Phil Mansfield and James Jowsey discuss strength training. This is for coaches and athletes struggling to increase their numbers even though they are putting in the work and time during strength training. If you’re not getting the return on investment for time invested, then we need to look at why.IntroThere’s not necessarily much difference in strength cycles – just the way they are sold. People would like you to believe the way they write 4x8 is different to mine but it’s not. Most strength cycles have similar aspects. The critical features are the same. The neurological stimulus they are going after are very similar.7:55The biggest issue with strength training is how we measure it. How many kilos of weight does athlete move from point a from point b not how much force, there is an incredible difference between the two.You are actually moving more weight during a 200-kilo squat than you are a 400-kilo leg press because of where they weight is in relation to the centre of mass.29:00Coaches are scared to make a decision. They want to be told what to do. What do I do in this situation? The manager of the football team ultimately has to decide what tactics. He has to understand the players etc to make that decision. In the CrossFit world we have to understand the athlete to allow us to make the right decision. Understand their body, energy systems, joints etc..34:00How do you know? Do you need a strength cycle or help with positioning?
You may recognize Phil Mansfield from his recent hit appearance on the Legion Strength & Conditioning Podcast a few episodes ago. Oh yeah, and he’s also Sara Sigmundsdottir’s coach. This time, the gang is all here - as Phil and his partner in RedPill Training James Jowsey (who coaches Samantha Briggs) join Jon, Luke and I for another podcast extravaganza. Jowsey and Phil’s expertise ranges from a detailed understanding of biomechanics and how it integrates with sport, as well as a higher order understanding of how to communicate with athletes and create buy-in for a long-term plan of development. And, the difference between “can’t get into” vs “can’t get out of” range of motion problems. [26:11] How do you peel apart an assessment when someone has a range of motion in an unloaded situation (like reaching overhead with their arm) but struggles to achieve that position in a loaded situation (like hanging from a pull-up bar)? [32:14] “The functional continuum” – how to return to sport from an injury, correct dysfunctional movement patterns, and move well under high metabolic fatigue [39:31] How do you get buy-in from high-level athletes to take steps backward and work on basics? [48:31] “If you need someone to shout at you to do five more reps, you’re not going anywhere anyway.” [57:58] How do you structure an environment for competition amongst competitors? And how much competition do you encourage between athletes? If you're not already subscribed to our newsletter, head over to www.legionsc.com and get with the program. Phil Mansfield sits down with Sam to discuss what makes her tick. What does it take to be a professional CrossFit athlete? Who does she look up to? Who is in her fantasy CrossFit team? Get to know Sam a little better and take a listen.Summary1:13Why do you get up and do it every day, mate?3:50How critical are you of yourself after training. Do you analyse what you’ve done or haven’t done? Do you let go quite quickly?6:20How much preparation goes into your training environment? Training in a group, in warm weather, travelling … listening to you, you place huge importance in being in a group, not training alone, not being cold. Do you travel after? You’ve just been to Dubai and had some sessions there, is that worth doing for you?9:58Moving on slightly. On our last podcast we talked about the new system in CrossFit and sanctionals and the whole system and would that potentially create a divide between those that earn the prize money and live professionally as versus those who are working. Putting that aside and talking about CrossFit as it has been rather than the new format, how difficult is it for athletes coming through to try and live professionally and compete against people who are doing this full time and who have sponsorships?11:50What’s the difference between that (professional / amateur)? Just personal opinion, how much being able to sleep and rest between sessions, and relax versus working, difficult to put a percentage on it but is it the difference?13:08On that recovery note… and moving onto training… how do you stop; how do you manage that process and that drive to always want to do more?18:05So, you don’t ever have that (injuries) in the back of your mind, you’re able to block it out and go hard. As you get slightly older does it play more on your mind or are you as fearless as you were at 19 /20?18:54How many hours out of your week are you using for injury prevention or prehabilitation?19:36How many hours a day are you using on training with logistical work etc..20:06What does a typical day look like?22:09What does Sam Briggs say to 19-year-old Sam Briggs now?24:00Where are you in 10 years’ time?25:00Will we ever see Sam Briggs the coach?25:20I would like a life example and an inter sport example who are your role models?31.00You’ve got a bet… and you need to win CrossFit games as a team, what’s your team?Pick two teams actually… one’s I’m going to win and one’s I’m going to have the most fun.33:00Which athlete do you know can positively fire you up? Jowes has programmed you a day from hell and it’s a huge work and you need someone by you … do you have a training partner? Does it depend on the type of work out? Do you have someone next to you? Is it better with a male, not so competitive as a female?34:30You like a practical joke don’t you? Do you have any good stories? good practical joke, CrossFit stories?
