PAIN Founder Flindt Andersen and Jason LaChance sat down with special guest Steve Adami executive director of The Way Out, a recovery-focused homeless initiative of The Salvation Army San Francisco. After spending over two decades in and out of jails and prison my life changed. My recovery and transformation started in a pair of handcuffs. After being released from prison in December 2010, I earned a Master's Degree in Public Administration (Public Policy/Criminal Justice); was inducted into Pi Alpha Alpha, a National Honor Society for Public Affairs and Administration; and received the Barbra Jordan Award for Academic Excellence from San Francisco State University. In 2014 I was hired by the San Francisco Adult Probation Department as a Reentry Services Coordinator, promoted to a managerial position in 2017, and was appointed the Director of the Reentry Division in 2020. In this role I designed and managed a portfolio of 20 million dollars of reentry and recovery-focused programs, and managed San Francisco's Reentry Council and Community Corrections Partnership. In May 2023, I was appointed the Executive Director of The Way Out, a recovery-focused homeless initiative of The Salvation Army. Steve, Flindt and Jason discuss the following topics and more. In 2004, he was transferred to the position of supervisor over the Criminal Investigations Division.In 2006, Travis was promoted to major and commander of the Special Operations Division, Patrol Division, and then the Administrative Division.Travis was promoted to deputy chief in 2013 and commanded the Operations Support Bureau.Travis has had numerous letters of appreciation, commendations and awards throughout his career, and was selected Officer of the Month twice for the department. Travis was also selected as the City of Independence Employee of the Month during his tenure as a major. The Investigations Unit received a Special Unit Citation in 2005 while under Travis' command.Travis' wife, Michelle, is a schoolteacher for the Fort Osage School District. They have three children; Tanner, Logan, and Raven. Travis' father is the current chief of police in Lone Jack, Missouri, after retiring from the Kansas City, Missouri Police Department. Pi Alpha Alpha is the National Society for Public Affairs and Administration and is an affiliate of the American Society for Public Administration. Its purposes are to: encourage and reward scholarship and accomplishment among students and practitioners of public affairs and administration, promote the advancement of education and scholarship in the art and science of public affairs and administration, and foster integrity and creative performance in the conduct of governmental and related public service operation. To be eligible for membership, undergraduates must have completed 15 semester hours in public affairs or public administration, maintain a 3.5 GPA in public affairs/administration and 3.0 GPA overall, and hold 2nd semester junior year standing. Graduate students must have completed at least fifty percent of required course work (minimum of 18 units) and hold a minimum GPA of 3.7.
