We welcome Army Spouse, speaker and military spouse advocate, Beth Conlin, to the show to discuss the challenges to military spouse employment by combating the ills of the DoD's Status of Forces Agreement (SOFA). Beth has been on a mission to “burn the SOFA” after moving to Germany and facing severe restrictions for her employer due to the needless barriers put in place by SOFA.
New York City's Metropolitan Museum of Art is one of the world's greatest cultural institutions. Its holdings encompass a vast range—including paintings, sculptures, costumes, instruments, and arms and armor—and span millennia, from ancient Egypt and Greece to Islamic art to European Old Masters and modern artists. How did the Met amass this trove, and what do the experiences of the people who bought, restored, catalogued, visited, and watched over these works tell us about the museum? The Met: A History of a Museum and Its People (Columbia University Press, 2024) by Dr. Jonathan Conlin is a groundbreaking bottom-up history of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, exploring both its triumphs and its failings. Dr. Conlin tells the stories of the people who have shaped the museum—from curators and artists to museumgoers and security guards—and the communities that have made it their own. Highlighting inequalities of wealth, race, and gender, he exposes the hidden costs of the museum's reliance on “robber barons” and oligarchs, the exclusionary immigration policies that influenced the foundation of the American Wing, and the obstacles faced by women curators. Drawing on extensive interviews with past and current staff, Conlin brings the story up to the present, including the museum's troubled 150th anniversary in 2020. As the Met faces continued controversy, this book offers a timely account of the people behind an iconic institution and a compelling case for the museum's vision of shared human creativity. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose new book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. Spirit Rock Meditation Center: dharma talks and meditation instruction
(Spirit Rock Meditation Center) Moving aside from the notions of a good death or a bad death, we consider an exquisite death. The power of an encounter with mortality can set our lives in motion. How would we like to be companions for ourselves? In this talk we hear stories that changed Kodo's understanding of mortality, and how the Buddha accompanied the ill and dying.
In this empowering conversation, Lisa dives into the evolving landscape of masculinity with Bob Conlin, a men's leadership coach and co-founder of Alchemy of Men. Impact of Authenticity: He emphasizes the importance of creating spaces where men can openly share their struggles and redefine success beyond just career achievements. Building Community: Bob's retreats provide a brotherhood for men from all walks of life, fostering connection, growth, and healing. Special thanks to Dan Zupansky, host of TRUE MURDER, for his help in the production of this episode which Burl explains at the end of the broadcast Never again could anyone say, "It will never happen here!" Because it did. October 25, 2023 was just an ordinary night in Lewiston, a small, working class city of 37,000 in central Maine. Friends and families had gathered to do what they loved to do with the people they wanted to be with at a bowling alley called Just-in-Time Recreation Center and Schemengees, a popular sports bar and restaurant. They felt immune from the violent crime that seemed to wrack the rest of the country in a state that the FBI had just named the safest in America. Then Robert Card II, a deeply paranoid Army Reserve soldier, walked into both places with a high-powered rifle and opened fire, killing 18 people and wounding 13 more. He then fled to a third location, where according to the evidence and the testimony of his best friend, he likely planned to lay in wait and kill his ex-co-workers when they came to work the next morning. The tragedy is that the numerous red flags he had raised in the months before weren't enough to stop him before he carried out his terrible plan. A combination of watered-down gun control laws and law enforcement and military negligence made sure of that. In THE LEWISTON SHOOTINGS - An All-American Tragedy, author and award-winning journalist Robert Conlin traces the shootings that deeply scarred a community that thought it was the last place on earth where a mass shooting would take place

Halloween was less than a week away, and the decorative ghouls and witches, grinning pumpkins and scythe-wielding zombies that stalked the shadows of Lewiston's imagination wilted as the sun rose higher behind the eight majestic spires of the iconic Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church on Bartlett Street. If those 170-foot-high spires were to ever disappear, Lewiston would be as unrecognizable as Paris without the Eiffel Tower. Two miles north at Just-In-Time Recreation Center on Mollison Way, the close-knit staff would be making sure the pinsetter machines on each of its 34 bowling lanes were working properly, food was prepped and beer kegs primed for the influx of league participants later in the day, and rental shoes and bowling balls were cleaned and ready to go.Four miles south of them, the equally tight-knit staff at Schemengees Bar & Grille on Lincoln St. would be setting up for the lunchtime crowd, and readying the pool tables and cornhole lanes for a busy night of league play. It's not an easy name to pronounce, but that didn't matter to its many dedicated regulars who gathered there after work for a fun time out with friends. No one could know during that ordinary October day that the pulse of daily life in Lewiston and the area would be on life support just an hour after sunset that very evening. No one, that is, except the man who would be responsible for making sure of that.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/houseofmysteryradio. Description: Some Stutter, Luh! welcomes Kris Conlin who shares her personal experience with dyscalculia. She emphasizes the importance of raising awareness about dyscalculia and the need for better support systems in education. Kris recommends others to follow their passion to maintain mental wellbeing! Notes: Kris explains her challenges with dyscalculia, a branch of dyslexia that affects the brain's processing of numbers and data, making math challenging. She faced difficulties at school due to dyscalculia, but she was lucky to receive help from supportive teachers, and specialized programs. Dyscalculia significantly affected Kris's self-esteem and mental health. Despite her condition, she successfully navigates her job by coping strategies like focusing on her love for plants and gardening to manage stress. Emphasizing the need for increased awareness and support for dyscalculia, Kris advocates for more resources and training for teachers and mental health professionals. She highlights the vital role of her support systems, including therapy and family, in managing her condition. Additionally, she advises others with dyscalculia to engage in activities they are passionate about to help manage their condition and maintain mental well-being. About Kris: My name is Kris and I'm honored to be a guest on this radio podcast to share my personal journey with Dyscalculia. I believe that by sharing my experiences, we can raise awareness about this learning disability and inspire others to overcome its challenges. I realized I had Dyscalculia roughly around Grade 8 when one of my best friends mentioned the condition as they were recently diagnosed. It made perfect sense; I struggled with mathematics and trying to practice the concepts were marked by frustration and self-doubt. However, I was determined not to let this learning disability define my potential. Challenges: Dyscalculia presented a range of challenges in my academic and personal life. Tasks that involved numbers, such as basic calculations and mental math seemed insurmountable at the time. I often felt isolated and struggled to keep up with my peers. Thankfully, I wasn't alone as there were a group of kids in my grade that all needed some extra help. The Turning Point: My turning point came when I met a couple supportive teachers in middle school (Ms. N. Elias and Ms. L. Cusak) who recognized my struggles and provided alternative teaching methods. With their help, I started building a foundation of numerical understanding step by step. It was a slow and often frustrating process, but I remained committed. Overcoming Dyscalculia: Through years of hard work, determination, and the support of dedicated educators and loved ones, I began to gain confidence in my mathematical abilities. I discovered strategies and tools that worked for me, such as visual aids, specialized tutoring, and assistive technology. Today, I can proudly say that I've overcome many of the challenges associated with Dyscalculia. I've not only improved my math skills but also learned to embrace my unique way of thinking. My journey has led me to become an advocate for individuals with learning disabilities and to inspire others to never give up on their dreams. Message to Others: To anyone struggling with Dyscalculia or any learning disability, I want to emphasize that you are not alone, and it's okay to seek help. With the right support and determination, you can overcome the challenges posed by Discalculia and achieve your goals. Remember, your journey is unique, and your strengths are immeasurable. I'm grateful for the opportunity to share my story on this podcast, and I hope it encourages conversations about Dyscalculia and the importance of inclusive education. Together, we can create a world where everyone, regardless of their learning differences, can thrive and reach their full potential.
I'm beyond honored to have Bob Conlin and Alex Terranova, co-founders of The Alchemy of Men, on the show today. In their work, they've created a community and path to support men in discovering their authentic selves, evolving from boys to men, becoming more self-expressed, and building lives they can be proud of. Alex, Bob, and I used to be leaders together in Accomplishment Coaching, where we all individually trained as coaches together, served in different roles, and partnered in many different ways. We have a lot of experience knowing one another in multiple capacities, and I hope this is evident throughout the episode. I ask them a lot of deep questions about their work as it's so important and needed in today's world. In their work, Alex and Bob are cracking the door open for men to show them what is possible if they can tear down their walls. They know that getting men to show up to their retreats is the hardest part – because they have found that once they are there, it's easy for the facades to fade and allow a new version of masculinity to appear. I can't wait for you to tune in and find your own favorite takeaways. Topics: Believing that we get to choose who we are and how we see the world, and for men, trusting that the definition of traditional masculinity can be changed and improved upon The transformation that Alex and Bob themselves have gone through, how it's impacted their own friendship, and the lessons they now take into their work with their clients How Alex and Bob support their clients in facilitating breakthroughs in their lives, knocking down walls, and opening their hearts during their retreats, especially as it's brand new territory for most The power of letting go of your ego and surrendering to what you don't know, and why it's probably easier than you believe it is Letting go of everything you may think about what it means to be a man to create the space for reinvention and undoing to flow through How we can create safe space in supporting our partners to ask for help, create an equal relationship, and rewrite the norms of power dynamics Episode Resources: Join us on Monday, July 15th at 12pm ET for our monthly Non-Networking Power Hour for Empathpreneurs with our UNBOUNDED Community for deep connections and meaningful support. Have you ever watched a great athlete perform? They can look flawless. Light on their feet. Perfect form. They make everything look effortless. Whether it's at 29029 or another endurance event it's easy to see the “front of the pack” and think “how can this be so easy for them”.....”and why isn't it that easy for me” I'm not sure what it is that makes us think that those who are winning the races and climbing in front of us are somehow having an easier time. No matter your ability, everyone is covering the same distance and even the best of us have underlying struggles, not visible to the outside world, that threaten to derail our performance. Amber Conlin was the first woman to find her Everest at Snowbasin #2 in 2022. She was fast and fit, completing 29,029 feet of climbing and 30 miles of distance just after midnight 19 hours after beginning the challenge. If you were standing at the summit in those dark, early morning hours, you would have seen a mom being greeted by her 4 children, her husband Tyler and her in-laws. All of them beaming and overflowing with pride. But this 29029 finish was not the only Everest Amber climbed on her way to this point. We may not always know the battles and challenges that rage on the other side of a smiling face and a brilliant performance, but as we dig below the surface what we uncover can teach us things for our own journey. Amber can teach us what true happiness is and how she finally found it……not on the mountain…….but within herself!

She explains that an offer is what you put in front of someone to persuade and motivate them to take the next step with your business. Alisha emphasizes the need for a series of micro-yeses throughout the buyer's journey and highlights the three core offers in a funnel: the authority beacon, the lead generation offer, and the sales offer. She provides examples of how she has optimized offers for different clients, including a luxury home builder, a finance company, and a home care provider. Alisha also emphasizes the importance of research, strategy, and execution in creating successful offers and shares her perspective on failure and learning from it in marketing.
