In episode 253 we welcome our guest, Carl Chang, founder and CEO of Kairos Investment Management. In today’s episode, we’re talking real estate. It’s not every day I get a chance to talk with a pizza entrepreneur, successful real-estate investment management firm CEO, or Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco Board Member. Carl is all three. We get into Carl’s backstory and kicking off his career in the real estate business as a steward of family money. We discuss his firm’s investment criteria, looking at the fundamental core value of bricks and mortar, and evaluating opportunities by understanding whether or not they think they can make money in downside scenarios and earn durable cash flow. Carl reminds us that real estate is not all about yield, and walks us through what he was seeing in the early 2000s that made him a net seller during that period. We talk about what the real estate landscape looks like going forward, from opportunities on the debt side of real estate to multifamily housing. As we wind down, we discuss Carl’s role as a board member of the Federal Reserve Bank of San Francisco and what it’s been like to launch an innovative spin on pizza with Pieology. All this and more in episode 253 with Kairos’ Carl Chang.

PSA: As we come into the new school year, don’t be afraid to ask for IEP right away! As a national organization, Autism Speaks can provide the structure and framework for new organizations coming into the community. Since one organization can’t be all things to all people, many organizations in Orange County work together, and one of today’s guests is passionate about spreading resources to the community. On today’s show, Amanda and Vickie chat with Tracey and Jackie from Autism Speaks.  Tracey McDonald is the Executive Director for the Southern California chapter of Autism Speaks and shares her own personal journey with her son who lives with autism, her fierce determination as a parent, the resources that are available, and what’s on the horizon for Autism Speaks.         Show Highlights:   Toolkits are available for parents, grandparents, and others through Autism Speaks. These toolkits answer many common questions, and teach you how to talk about autism and how to educate your teachers, dentists, and coaches, for example. Autism Speaks started out being about awareness, because there wasn’t that much information about it yet. The organization has also helped remove the stigma surrounding autism. Tracey shares her concerns for her son, who is 22. Autism is a huge spectrum, and there’s a multitude of needs.  The earlier the intervention, the better your trajectory. Tracie explains why the word “cure” has been taken out of the Autism Speaks mission. The 100 Day Kit is free of charge. You can think of it as the “100 Day Safety-Net”. It helps you set a game-plan over the next 100 days.  Autism Speaks has only been around for 15 years, but the impact it has made has been that of a much older organization. The ways in which autism can be very isolating.  Autism Speaks “Walk Day” - for a lot of people that’s the one day they get to celebrate their kids. Amanda talks about “Administrative Law”. Fundraising explained: the NIH provides a certain percentage of funding, and as the percentage of people with autism goes up, you have to advocate for even more funding based on the research and studies available. Insurance reform: insurance companies are paying for a lot more than they’ve ever paid for, and this came from advocacy. There’s still a lot of work to be done, but it’s incredibly meaningful.  Most people that aren’t affected by autism don’t even understand the struggles that families go through, so change won’t happen until we talk about it more. Autism Speaks is having a roundtable discussion for businesses and a public event on what autism looks like in the workplace. The Walk is happening December 8, 2019, at Angel Stadium in Anaheim. Service Champions Heating and Cooling, and Pieology are the presenting sponsors.     Links/Resources:   Thank you for listening! This talk can be called Consumer Protection for Your Mind, or How to Control Minds for Fun and Profit Today we have Dave Lakhani of https://www.boldapproach.com/ We tackle the NFL and getting attention for your cause. As soon as we ask for attention we are asking to be judged. Interestingly, as we analyze the events, we too are screaming for attention. This is the economy for which we all exist. Long ago Dave taught me to enter a conversation that I want under my name. Contribute to the conversation, then lead it and become its thought leader. Moving the narrative into the direction we wish. Key Takeaways As soon as we turn on media, manipulation is happening. Be the manipulator or be the manipulated. In an over communicated world attention is everything. Even negative attention. Attention drives commerce. Marketers leverage news-always. He with the attention, moves the narrative. Get attention by moving peoples emotions. We all are moved/enslaved by emotion. Get out of your emotion to find your rationality through new perspectives. Using the Tom Brady Pattern to get free. Dave offers his help for Kap, the NFL and Pieology. On this week’s group chat, we talk about family nicknames on our Friday Speed Round; shout out some stuff we like on the Roundabout Roundup; hear an interview with a special-education advocate; and do some shameless self-promotion. But first, a discussion of (yikes) daughters and dating. Here’s your road map to the episode: 05:39: Put Yourself Out There ... But Not Too Far Out — Our daughters don’t much want to hear our advice about dating, and maybe it’s just as well, because we’re not even sure whether dating’s a thing anymore, or whether “a thing” is dating, or why you can’t ask someone to a dance without roses and guinea pigs. Like they say on Facebook, “it’s complicated.” 23:04: Friday Speed Round: Nicknames — Terri “Don’t Call Me Terrianne and Especially Not Theresa," Nicole “not Nicky, not ever,” and Catherine “Usually Not Cathy” have a chat about names short, first, middle, and full. 29:35: Parenting Roundabout Roundup — Terri thanks Hootsuite for helping her bombard our podcast’s followers (and hers) with endless promotional tweets; Nicole shouts out to her favorite pizza place Pieology; and Catherine is excited to have a Freshii in her neighborhood. 33:12 Interview of the Week — Greer Gurland, author of How to Advocate Successfully for Your Child: What Every Parent Should Know About Special Education Law, chats with Terri about how hard it feels to advocate for our kids these days — and then somehow teach them how to advocate for themselves. (Mentioned: Episode 156’s discussion of helping kids find out what they’re good at.) 45:07 Shameless Self-Promotion — Terri invites you to our YouTube channel; Nicole will give you some kind of credits if you take her online training class on inclusive education; and Catherine has a VeryWell article about whether football is safe for kids. Ask yourself the question “What’s the Difference Between Success and Significance?”  That’s what Ted Chang had to discover so that he could keep his family together.  Ted had all the money and professional success that he could ever want, but at what cost?     “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding;in all your ways submit to him,and he will make your paths straight” - Proverbs 3:5-6   Ted has been married for 30 years, has two sons and has always been an entrepreneur.  He is committed to learning to let God lead his life in business and family. Biggest Weakness - Very competitive  When success happened in his career his relationship with God drifted. Biggest Strength - Ted’s ability to Study the Word and apply it in his life. Dark Time - When Ted started his business he had mortgaged his house and ended up one week away from missing payroll.  His wife had a difficult time and was ready to leave him.   Ted realized that his children saw everything, the good, the bad and the times he turned away from God. At age 52 after a tremendous amount of success, Ted realized that his life didn’t really mean much because his drive had taken over his family.  He asked himself, “What’s the difference between success and significance?”  Ted was a workaholic and knew his family was suffering. Ted dedicated his children to the Lord’s purpose and took it very seriously.  God has looked after them and they’ve learned what it means to be a child of God. Today, Ted is the President of a restaurant group that is a franchisee of Pieology.  It’s a Christian based business that is committed to reaching people with God’s Word.
