When information on abundance is collected, standardised monitoring enables the detection of subtle temporal changes in populations, species and communities. In France, Vigie-flore is such a standardised monitoring scheme targeting wild flora launched in 2009, involving amateur and professional botanists to survey plant communities across all habitat types. The monitoring data have revealed an ongoing, nationwide reshuffling of plant communities in response to climate change, but also a decline of common insect-pollinated species over the last decade, with consequences for community composition. These studies contribute to highlighting rapid changes in wild flora on a national scale and identifying plausible mechanisms. We will discuss the direct implications for conservation and the perspectives of this plant monitoring scheme.Gabrielle MartinI am an associate professor in botany and plant community ecology at Toulouse University and at the Centre de Recherche sur la Biodiversité et l'Environnement since 2021. Previously a post-doctoral researcher in plant community ecology at the Centre des Sciences de la Conservation (CESCO) at the Muséum National d'Histoire Naturelle and at the Institut Méditerranéen de Biodiversité et d'Ecologie after a PhD in ecology (MNHN). I study how, and with what intensity, the various components of global change affect the composition of plant communities and changes in species abundance, using trait-based approaches and spatio-temporal analyses. My current research focuses on the impacts of global change on wild flora, the links between temporal trends in species and plant life history traits, the detection of syndromes in the response of species and groups of species, and the identification of the spatial heterogeneity of threats to flora. I am teaching botany, plant biology and plant ecology at university at undergraduate and postgraduate level.

Judith delves into her breakthrough research on the interconnectedness of the tree and plant community, drawing intriguing parallels to human interactions. In our conversation, Judith shares compelling examples that highlight the remarkable similarities between the two communities. By exploring these connections, she delves into what we can learn from the trees and plants that surround us. She emphasizes the importance of nurturing our environment, cultivating a sense of responsibility, and reconnecting with the natural world.Turning her attention to legacy, Judith underscores the significance of imparting knowledge to the younger generation about the value of nature. Exploring the contract established with nature from the very beginning, she highlights the need for us to rediscover our role in caring for and preserving what we reap from it.To connect with Judith, learn more about her great work, and pick up a copy of her work, visit www.cuttingyourcarbonfootprint.com

On the heels of the #amplifymelanatedvoices initiative, we take pause to reflect on the national and international conversation happening around the Black Lives Matter movement. Upon hearing this, local plant shop Nelly's Flowers and Plants (@nellysflowershop) donated 12 plants to her cause, which she then rallied some of her plant friends to auction off on their accounts (@plantblerd @thehoodbotanist @siloliage @plantmepaul @welcometothejunglehome @felinejungle @thejungleupstairs @plant.ma ). This auctioning went throughout the week and has now raised over SIX times the original amount of her PPP and that number is still growing! This seed of an idea that Agatha had to raise money on her personal account turned into an incredible cross account, cross plant community supported movement that has raised an amazing amount of money for 3 national organizations and 3 local NYC community organizations. And it's not stopping here, follow @plantingforprogress on instagram to follow more auctions, as new people are donating plants to be auctioned everyday. They are planning on having monthly auctions of rare collector plants for good causes, so give them a follow if you're interested.   Rachel Cargle and her free 30 day #dothework course   What is Bloom and Grow Doing: - Doing the work: continuing to learn about the system injustice against black people in the country and using our privilege to help this cause.  - Donated to Black Lives Matter, Color of Change, The New Georgia Project, Showing Up for Racial Justice and Teens for Food Justice and continuing to seek out organizations that support ending racial injustice and food insecurity  - Finding diverse voices to interview for the podcast - Vote   This is a movement not a moment.    Follow Christopher AKA PlantKween Instagram: @plantkween   Follow Colah and Black in the Garden: iTunes: Black in the Garden Podcast IG: @blackinthegarden    Follow Maria and Bloom and Grow Radio: Support Bloom and Grow Radio by becoming a Plant Friend on Patreon! This time, he's joining us because he's the data guy at GrowIt! and they have some fascinating data to share – or Insights as we will call the info this episode. Get ready to learn some of the favorite plants and current trends gleaned from hundreds of thousands of users and millions of data points. Also, this will be the very first time GrowIt! goes into detail publicly about their Insights program – a new product that will bring customized data and insights (there's that word again…) to you – data you can use to drive decisions in your business. Let me remind you that as I shared the last time GrowIt was featured on the podcast, the team behind this unique tech company are hort people first and tech people second, so the info Mason will deliver this episode is firmly rooted in our industry and applicable for professional growers, garden center retailers and the landscape trade – our STEM listener base. But to me, the most exciting part of this episode is NOT the current insights Mason will share. The part that has my brain spinning and thinking forward is predictive analytics – creating models and trend lines not just to claim Monstera is a hot plant with millennials (which it certainly is) but to determine why that happened and what the next in plants will be. And as Mason explains, this can be done with data. In our industry. Today. This is HUGE! Download the GrowIt!
