Send a textWelcome to the Reel Turf Techs Podcast, Episode 161.Today we're talking with Lewis Weems, Equipment Manager at Bellerive Country Club in St. Louis, Missouri. Lewis walks us through his path into the industry — from growing up on a farm in southern Oklahoma to studying aviation at Oklahoma State, working for Kubota, then making the move to St. Louis where he cut his teeth learning reel mowers at a John Deere dealership. After volunteering on the golf course, he found his way into the maintenance operation full time and hasn't looked back.Lewis talks about what he enjoys most — seeing the finished product out on the course — and what he enjoys least: relief grinding on Bernhard grinders (even though he's the first to say how important it is for cut quality). He shares some of his go-to tools for two-stroke work, including his Milwaukee 1/4" impact and a recently added BC Master tool, plus a simple but effective small-engine tip using rope to break clutches loose. We get into first-year challenges as an equipment manager — time management, trusting your gut, and carrying the weight when things go wrong — along with mentorship lessons that shaped his approach, especially the value of bringing solutions, not just problems. Off the clock, Lewis finds balance fishing and tinkering. The conversation also dives into robotic mowing and range automation. Lewis shares his experience running a Husqvarna 550 on practice areas and trialing other units, talking mapping, signal struggles, multi-mower coordination, charging logistics, and how ball-deflection and collection workflows are evolving. They wrap with spray buggy reliability talk — roll pins, drivetrain spares, lithium batteries — and finish up with a rapid-fire segment that includes Tombstone and a medium-rare bone-in ribeye. The homesteading movement is awakening something deeper than a desire for fresh food or self-sufficiency. In this episode, I sit down with Lucas Mack of Kubota to talk about the spiritual pull drawing people back to the land and back to God. We explore how working with soil, seed, and stewardship quiets the noise and brings clarity about truth, responsibility, and purpose. CES, the former Consumer Electronics Show, is hosted every year in Las Vegas, Nevada, attracting the latest and greatest in futuristic tech for consumers, businesses, and everyone in between. It was just a few years ago, in 2019, when John Deere became one of the first major ag companies to exhibit at the show, and since then agricultural equipment and tech companies have become a mainstay.DTN Progressive Farmer's Senior Editor Dan Miller has been attending CES for years now, and fresh off the latest event, he brings us updates from the showroom floor. We'll learn more about what he saw and heard there — from upcoming equipment announcements to thoughts and feedback from farmers and consumers alike. He'll tell us about updates to John Deere's X9 Combine, the latest in AI and autonomy from Kubota and Bobcat, and guide us through the current state of the drone market with the latest from Hylio. We'll talk about productivity gains, price tags, and how shows like this create opportunities for farmers and agriculturalists to engage with the public. Finally, we'll hear what other stories Dan is expecting in the coming months as we head towards planting.
We've hit a tipping point for autonomy in agriculture, so how far off is fully autonomous farming? In this episode, Matthew Pryor sits down with Brett McMickell, Chief Technology Officer at Kubota North America, to unpack his view on what autonomy can deliver in agriculture and why it's closer than many people think.Brett's career spans spacecraft control systems and multi-vehicle autonomy. Today at Kubota, he's helping guide autonomy strategy inside one of the world's largest and oldest agricultural equipment manufacturers. Brett's focus is about ensuring the technology solves on the ground problems for farmers and is driven by customer demand, rather than by the tech itself.Matthew and Brett discuss:What supervised autonomy will look like in 1 - 3 years. Why smart implements and sensing are just as important as autonomous power systems. Why AI in agriculture is still under-appreciated.What autonomy will look like in 10 years (without human intervention). How autonomy could completely change farm layouts, machine sizes, and operating metrics. How Kubota decides whether to build, partner with, or acquire new technology.Useful Links:Kubota USA InnovationKubota acquires Bloomfield Robotics, so what?Kubota to acquire automation company AgJunction - Future FarmingKubota Concept Tractor | Innovation | Kubota Global SiteKubota launches first autonomous hydrogen-fuelled tractor - Farmers WeeklyHow can agtech startups and corporates do more together?Seeing into the future of farm autonomy (w/ SwarmFarm Robotics)Have we hit a tipping point for autonomy in ag?For more information and resources, visit our website. Make a Logo on Fiverr CES 2026's West Hall makes a bold statement about where the automotive world is headed. Yes, there are cars here—but the real story is how robots, autonomy, and industrial automation are quietly redefining the future of travel. Walking the floor, it feels less like a traditional auto show and more like a preview of a world where vehicles, machines, and infrastructure think and move together. Waymo: The Autonomous Backbone Waymo's presence anchors the West Hall with a clear message: fully autonomous mobility is no longer a concept—it's infrastructure. The latest generation driverless vehicles, including all-electric models already operating in cities like Las Vegas and Phoenix, show how far the tech has come since early hiccups. With advanced LiDAR and sensor stacks wrapped into production-ready designs, Waymo is positioning autonomy not as a novelty, but as a dependable, everyday transportation layer for cities, airports, and logistics. IDA Italia: Turning Any Car Into a Robot One of the most practical innovations comes from Italy, where IDA demonstrates a retrofit autonomous driving system mounted to a Fiat 500e. The idea is simple and powerful: instead of buying a new car, you can upgrade the one you already own. A roof-mounted LiDAR system and supporting hardware turn a conventional vehicle into a semi-autonomous platform, still allowing the driver to take over at any time. It's a glimpse of how autonomy could scale globally—by upgrading existing fleets instead of replacing them. Smart Optical Sensors: Robots That Move the World Industrial automation takes center stage with Smart Optical Sensors' robotic platform. Designed for environments like airports and warehouses, these robots can move luggage or packages directly to people instead of forcing people to hunt for their items. With cameras and intelligent sensors on board, this is the kind of behind-the-scenes robotics that could quietly change how logistics, retail, and travel hubs operate—less waiting, less walking, more efficiency. Sambo Motors: Flying Taxis Get a Robotic Checkup Sambo Motors' multi-propeller drone aircraft looks like it flew straight out of science fiction, but the real star is the robotic inspection system that scans the aircraft before flight. These robots check the exterior, structure, and systems to ensure everything is ready and safe. It's a perfect example of automation enabling the next generation of transportation—robots maintaining the machines that will move people through the air. Kubota: Farming Goes Fully Autonomous Autonomy in the West Hall isn't just about cities. Kubota's versatile robotic platform shows how agriculture is being transformed by connected, cloud-coordinated machines. This multi-purpose robot can handle tasks from tilling to harvesting, communicate with other machines in the field, and adapt to different work sites. It's industrial robotics meeting food production, and it highlights how the innovation at CES 2026 extends far beyond cars. V-Bot Superdog: A Robot With a Mission Among the crowd-pleasers is the V-Bot Superdog, an intelligent robotic companion designed for real-world environments. Beyond the novelty, it has serious applications: search, rescue, and assistance in outdoor scenarios. With long battery life, advanced perception, and the ability to seek help if someone is injured, this is robotics stepping into roles traditionally filled by trained animals and humans. Qualcomm Dragonwing: AI at the Edge Even something as simple as a bird feeder becomes a showcase for on-device AI in Qualcomm's Dragonwing. With built-in cameras, solar power, and real-time bird recognition, it demonstrates how the same technologies driving cars and robots are also filtering into consumer devices. It's a reminder that the West Hall's innovations are part of a much bigger ecosystem of connected, intelligent machines. Oshkosh: Reinventing Emergency Response Oshkosh brings one of the most imposing vehicles on the floor: a next-generation, sensor-laden fire and rescue truck. With automated doors, advanced cameras, and rugged all-terrain design, this is a vehicle built for speed, safety, and coordination in the most extreme conditions. It shows how autonomy and robotics aren't just about convenience—they're about saving lives. Leo Flight: The Jet Bike Dream If there's a symbol of the futuristic spirit of CES 2026, it might be the Leo Flight jet bike. A compact, electric, jet-propelled personal aircraft that doesn't require a pilot's license, it promises short hops across lakes or terrain at speeds up to 60 mph. With limited flight time, it's not practical for everyone—but it perfectly captures the experimental edge of the future of travel. Alpinestars Tech-Air: Safety Gets Smarter Not all innovation is about movement—some of it is about protection. Alpinestars' Tech-Air airbag system for riders deploys instantly during a crash, adding a smart, invisible layer of safety for motorcyclists and extreme sports enthusiasts. It's another example of sensors and AI quietly working in the background to reduce risk. Less Cars, More Robots The West Hall at CES 2026 feels like a turning point. Traditional automotive hardware is still here, but it's increasingly surrounded—and sometimes overshadowed—by robots, automation, and intelligent systems. The real story isn't just about what we'll drive, but about the machines that will drive, manage, inspect, protect, and even fly us. This is the West Hall's message: the future of travel isn't just about cars anymore—it's about an entire robotic ecosystem moving the world. We had a great time catching up with retired Army Major Stacy Lively, a former high school classmate whose 27-year military career took him all over the world — from Panama to Iraq and Afghanistan. Stacy enlisted in the Army in 1987 and went on to serve in both Operation Desert Storm and Operation Iraqi Freedom, completing five combat tours totaling 54 months. His journey took him from basic training at Fort Jackson to the 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg, and later to the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) as a commissioned Infantry Officer. We talk about what service really means, the transition from military to civilian life, lessons from leadership under fire, and of course — a few laughs and memories along the way. It's a genuine, down-to-earth conversation with someone who's lived a life of commitment, courage, and perspective. A podcast centered around our soldiers, veterans, and the civilians they protect! What if accepting failure was the key to entrepreneurial success? Mark DeSantis has built and sold multiple companies over the years and like any entrepreneurial journey, it's been a mixture of ups and downs, failures and successes. But in this episode, we hear that acknowledging the possibility of failure is what gave him the courage to keep on going.Mark shares his entrepreneurial story – why he began it, how he stays motivated, and some of the best lessons he's picked up over the years. One of the top points he makes in this episode is to be problem-focused, not solutions-focused. When building tech solutions, it's easy to get lost in the tech itself and lose sight of the real problems you want it to solve. But to make anything commercially viable, especially something as “new” as robotics, it needs to solve real problems.Mark also sings the praises of Pittsburgh, which he says is one of the best cities for robotics innovation today. He's seen the city decline and grow over the years into what's now a college town that's thriving in the tech space. In this episode, find out:Mark shares what he's been up to recently, after seeing Bloomfield Robotics acquired by Kubota CorporationThe challenge of living with uncertainty as an entrepreneur and the story that inspired him to embrace fearWhy entrepreneurship is like climbing Mount Everest in that you should look in front of you, not at the summitMark's secret to enjoying the journey of entrepreneurship and the moment he decided he wanted to do this for the rest of his lifeWhy AI and robotics are perfect for the “big and boring” problems in our livesWhy we might need a Henry Ford-style revolution to take robotics to the next levelHow Pittsburgh is growing in the tech and robotics spaceWhy asking if someone wants to buy your solution is the wrong question for an entrepreneur to askEnjoying the show? It's feedback from Manufacturing All-Stars like you that keeps us going!Tweetable Quotes:“Where technology, particularly AI, can make a difference is in the big and boring problems. The places where nobody thinks to take an advanced technology."“Go where everyone else isn't with advanced solutions and make sure the problem's big enough where you can make a difference. “If you're frozen with fear because you're worried about the failure of the company, or your personal failure and the humiliation that that might bring, you're not going to make good decisions. You're gonna fail. It's like playing not to lose in sports. Entrepreneurship's all offense, no defense.”Links & mentions:Mark DeSantis, his bio is stackedBloomfield Robotics, combining plant-level imaging and deep learning to assess the health and performance of every plant, at any scale continuouslyKubota, manufacturing and assembling Kubota lawn tractorsPittsburgh Robotics Network, facilitating commercial business growth and economic development opportunities for the Greater Pittsburgh region's robotics, autonomy, and AI...
