Breaking Through with Kristin Rowe-Finkbeiner (Powered by MomsRising)
On the radio show this week, we dive into Donald Trump's latest round of harmful, destructive executive orders and outlandish ideas, like medals for motherhood and classes about menstrual cycles to increase the birth rate — instead of policies that moms, families, businesses, and our economy really need to thrive! We also discuss the rise in discriminatory policies affecting LGBTQ youth and the misrepresentation of civil rights law. Next, we hear about how parents and teachers living abroad on military bases are handling this onslaught of attacks on public education. Finally, we cover how community support and advocacy can help children caught up in our inhumane immigration system receive the legal representation they need and deserve. Jonny welcomes Heather back with a brief discussion of the Superb Owl, which neither of them watched. They then turn to a brief chronicle of the anti-LGBTQ moves and rhetoric in the government and beyond this past week. In the back half of the show, they share two examples of the consequenses of this political climate before moving on to recommendations for acting up and pushing back, some of them literally from ACT UP.
The Human Rights Campaign, (HRC), joins The Trevor Project and GLSEN in reducing staff and refocusing their efforts in the new political climate. Our question to all these non-profits is, how have you advanced LGBTQ rights in the last few years? Then, an angry customer who purchased a Subaru Outback tried to return it by driving through the dealership. He is now charged with a couple of felonies due to damages of more than 85K. Finally, a Bare Necessities nude cruise left Miami last week on a Norwegian Cruise Line ship and “no-fondling is allowed.” Apple Podcasts: apple.co/1WwDBrC Spotify: spoti.fi/2pC19B1 iHeart Radio: bit.ly/4aza5LW YouTube Music: bit.ly/43T8Y81 Pandora: pdora.co/2pEfctj YouTube: bit.ly/1spAF5a Also follow Tim and John on: Facebook: www.facebook.com/focusgroupradio

Radical Self-Tenderness: Christie Hardwick Tenderness is pleasurable. So why does it feel like something to avoid, something to cringe from, something to quickly get through? When you are tender with yourself, or someone is tender with you, it is vulnerable. So why not be vulnerable? We all have our stories. Radical Self Tenderness takes self care to the next level. We cultivate within us a vibration of love that heals, What if taking care of you is part of taking care of the world? If you live tenderly on the inside could it contribute to more tenderness in your life and in those whose lives you touch? Can you be tender with what causes you to feel pain? Can you see how self acceptance contributes to peace? What if we were meant to love ourselves? What would that make possible? Christie has spent more than thirty years developing leaders and managing change. While in the high tech sector, she simultaneously held leadership positions at work and in the community. Christie is an American Leadership Forum Senior Fellow and faculty member. For five years, she served on the Women's Leadership Board at Harvard's Kennedy School of Government. She was the founding board chair of GreatSchools.net, served two terms as an elected school trustee (recognized by CTA with their State Gold Award) and also chaired the board for GLSEN, the Gay, Lesbian, Straight Education Network. She is an expert facilitator of Contextual Leadership with the Institute of Women's Leadership and The American Leadership Forum, Silicon Valley. Licensed in 2007 and ordained with CSL in 2015, Christie teaches virtually with Illli.org and soulcallglobal.org and is a member of the ministry team at First Unity Spiritual Campus in St. Petersburg, Florida. Christie also currently serves as executive advisor and spiritual guide to leaders from both the non-profit and corporate sectors. Her new book “Radical Self Tenderness”“ How nurturing your soul can help heal the world” is out from Park Point Press. She and her wife Jane Harper have four children and seven grandchildren and live between the U.S. and Italy. Learn more about Simran here: www.iamsimran.com www.1111mag.com/

Melanie Willingham-Jaggers is the Executive Director at GLSEN, a national nonprofit working to ensure public education is safe and affirming for all students, including those who identify as and are assumed to be queer, trans, or gender expansive. Our conversation explores why it's essential to say gay, bi, trans, and other words that have held important meanings before being politicized while ensuring that all students have access to adults who are competent and compassionate. Melanie discusses the work of GLSEN, which is incredibly important considering recent increases in anti-LGBTQ legislation targeting students, schools, and democracy.
We are in the hottest part of hell - depending on where you're living, you may be feeling that literally - but GLSEN executive director Melanie Willingham-Jaggers joins to discuss why it's so important to believe in and fight for a better future.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Press conference with LGBTQ leaders, legal experts, civil rights leaders and student advocates that Emmy Winner Charlotte Robinson host of OUTTAKE VOICES™ attended about the new Title IX rule. The U.S. Department of Education published its final regulatory updates that clarify Title IX protections for LGBTQ students, student survivors of sexual assault and pregnant and parenting students. Consistent with the reasoning of the U.S. Supreme Court's landmark Bostock v. Clayton County decision in 2020 the Department now clarifies that harassment on the basis of sexual orientation, gender identity or sex characteristics violates Title IX's mandate for federally funded schools to prohibit sex discrimination. In March 2021 President Biden issued Executive Order 14021 beginning the process of undoing the Trump administration's harmful actions undermining Title IX and protections for LGBTQ students and sexual assault survivors. In this virtual press briefing Shiwali Patel, Director of Justice for Student Survivors and Senior Counsel, National Women's Law Center conducted this intimate informative session joined by Brandon Wolf, Human Rights Campaign, National Press Secretary, Olivia Hunt, National Center for Transgender Equality Policy Director, Kenyora Parham, End Rape on Campus CEO, Kel O'Hara, Equal Rights Advocates Senior Attorney, Emily Bach & Andrew Davis who are student organizers with Know Your IX A which is a project of advocates for youth and concluded with Melanie Willingham-Jaggers, GLSEN's Executive Director. As we celebrate this important milestone to protect our LGBTQ youth there's still much more work to be done. Schools have also been hampered by extremist efforts at the state and local level to target LGBTQ youth especially transgender, nonbinary and gender-expansive youth. This year alone we're already dealing with more than 470 anti-LGBTQ bills introduced in state legislatures nationwide mostly targeting our transgender youth. The new Title IX Ruling also does not protect the rights of transgender athletes to play and be part of a team. Every student including LGBTQ students should have equal access to educational opportunities throughout the entirety of their school experience. In 2023, a record-breaking 586 bills were introduced across the United States that specifically targeted transgender people and their right to exist. From removing trans people's access to healthcare to their access to public bathrooms, sports, books, or simply the use of their names and pronouns, efforts to erase trans people were intense. The 2024 legislative season is around the corner, and there will undoubtedly be another onslaught of anti-LGBTQ bills up for debate. Neca Allgood returns to the podcast to talk about the upcoming legislative season with Jen. What an absolute sick and deranged society we live in when there are big corporations funding GLSEN, a "non-profit" organization strictly built to target kids in school while keeping their parents in the dark. Sexual books in elementary and middle schools, teachers helping students "come out" as their true identity. This is the definition of child grooming and it has to stop. Amala Ekpunobi is in for Dennis. When it comes to pride month, and you're an adult, go ahead and participate if you like… but when it comes to children, that's a different story. The AP standard has gone woke, and that's problematic. Are Target and GLSEN ‘grooming' kids? She watched the new live version of Disney's The Little Mermaid and compares it with the old version. A liberal woman took to TikTok lamenting that she cannot find a traditional man who isn't conservative. In honor of Pride Month, I wanted to look at sexual orientation and gender identity and expression in kids. In particular, I wanted a better understanding of the terms that are used to describe gender identity and gender expression. I also wanted to get an overview of what happens when we fail to support kids who are perceived as not conforming to prevailing sexual and gender norms. To help with this, I reached out to Madelaine Adelman. Maddie is a Professor of Justice Studies in the School of Social Transformation at Arizona State University, an author, and, for over two decades, one of the driving forces in GLSEN, a national organization that was founded by teachers to promote safe, supportive, and LGBTQ-inclusive K-12 education. We're re-releasing a previous podcast episode from June 2021 that features an interview with Él Martinez and their mother, Ivylee Martinez, regarding gender identity issues in celebratration of LGBTQ+ Pride month in June. Pride Month is a time to recognize the issues, challenges, and discrimination the LGBTQ+ community has faced and to celebrate the triumphs. Host Annette Hines and Él discuss the use of pronouns, labels, and terminology in both the LGBTQ+ community and in the disability community. Honoring each individual and their preferences in how they refer to themselves is essential. For example, people may have strong feelings about the use of terms like "special needs" or "disabled" and instead choose to use terms like "different" or "extrodinary." Él explains how the use of pronouns (He/She/They) can be difficult and challenging for friends, family, teachers, and acquaintances to use correctly. Below are the definitions for various gender terms for those unfamiliar that they shares during the episode: (Biological) Sex – assigned to a child at birth, most often based on external anatomy. Gender Identity – the term(s) someone uses to define their gender, ex: male, non-binary, woman, fluid. Gender Expression – the manifestation of someone's gender through their appearance. Transgender – a term used to describe someone who does not identify with the label/biological sex they were assigned at birth. Cisgender – a term used to describe someone who identifies with the label they were assigned at birth. Él shares the message of acceptance at the end of the podcast. For youth: “You're perfect just the way you are; it's ok to explore; it's ok to change how you identify.” To parents, Él says to have patience. Kids may not have the answers to the questions you are asking. Kids are still learning about themselves and to just listen to them and their needs and accept them as they are. If you or someone you know needs assistance, please check out your local GSA (Genders and Sexualities Alliance) and/or local LGBTQ+ center or group. Other resources include GLSEN, which supports LGBTQ+ students in K-12 education, and Transgender Law Center. Learn more about the advocacy work of Él Martinez on their website: https://www.elmartinez.org/ Let us know what you think of this episode! We are re-releasing it because it is so important to learn about gender identity and be open and accepting of all people as they are. In recent weeks, there has been notable tension within the Christian conservative space following Target's 2023 Pride campaign, which many feel is unnecessarily aimed at children and has even partnered with a controversial Satanist graphic designer. The controversial campaign, which includes contentious items like tuck-friendly bathing suits for adolescents and questionable partnerships with organizations like GLSEN, has raised concerns and fueled debates about potential boycotts. Amidst this tension, some conservatives are resorting to disruptive behaviors in stores and berating low-level employees, which has been met with backlash from others within the same community who believe that this isn't the appropriate course of action. While there's a consensus that companies behaving against certain beliefs should face consequences, there's a growing conversation about the right way to respond - whether through boycotts, dialogues, or other means - without misusing biblical references or exploiting the situation for individual narratives. The Biden Administration has proposed a change to Title IX that would prohibit schools from categorically banning trans students from sports teams that align with their identity. But many advocates have criticized the new rule, pointing out that schools would still have leeway to discriminate based on exceptions around competitive advantage and risk of injury. In this episode, Imara unpacks the pros and cons of this new rule. She speaks with Andy Marra, the Executive Director of the Transgender Legal Defense & Education Fund (TLDEF), about the proposal's potential impacts on trans student athletes. Imara also chats with Melanie Willingham-Jaggers, Executive Director of GLSEN, about their public comment campaign urging revisions to the rule and the need for more clarity on its anti-discrimination protections. On today's episode, we are so honored to have Filipina actress Ivory Aquino grace us with her vibrant energy and help us wrap up Women's History Month. This week also coincides with International Transgender Day of Visibility (March 31st), which celebrates the accomplishments of transgender and gender nonconforming people, while also bringing awareness to the work that is needed to achieve trans justice (GLSEN). As a trans woman, Ivory describes her childhood as “a push and pull of joy and questioning.” Born and raised in the Philippines, Ivory moved to the US to study at Berklee College of Music. An accomplished singer, dancer, and actor, Ivory is best known for portraying transgender activist Cecilia Chung in the miniseries “When We Rise” and being cast as Alysia Yeoh in DC Film's “Batgirl.” Her powerful stories remind us why it is so important to approach the unknown with curiosity, rather than fear. This conversation with Brian is so amazing and covers so many facets of relating to other humans, regardless of your relationship dynamic. Brian is a cis, queer, polyamorous, sex and relationship educator who grew up evangelical Christian and came out as queer in 2004. He's been with his partner for over 14 years and they slowly opened their relationship about a year into it. And today, he is also one of the co-founders of queertheology.com! One of the things we love about talking with Brian is how he weaves incredible learning moments into all of his experiences in life. We have great conversations on hierarchy, communication, rules and constraints, labels, the power of fluidity in relationships, and the intersection of spirituality and non-monogamy... All packed into one podcast! A bit more about Brian that we borrowed from his website: Brian G. Murphy is an activist, educator, and certified relationship coach. He studied film production and religion at the University of Southern California as a Presidential Scholar and was inducted into Theta Alpha Kappa, the national honor society for religious studies and theology. Before turning to activism, Brian worked in Hollywood on a number of film and television projects and produced a pilot for a national broadcast network. He received nonviolence training through Soulforce, media training from GLAAD, and participated in the 2007 Equality Ride, engaging in direct action activism at anti-LGBTQ colleges in the USA. Today he is the co-founder of QueerTheology.com, a resource hub, podcast, and online community, which explores how queerness and spirituality enrich one another; and Relationshift, a relationship coaching practice helping LGBTQ+ and polyamorous people build thriving relationships on their own terms. He is co-author of Queers The Word and a sought-after speaker at colleges, churches, and conferences across the country. Brian has worked with GLSEN, Athlete Ally, Born This Way Foundation, and the Human Rights Campaign, as well as a number of local, grassroots organizations.
