That's the common thread of this week's podcast as we focus in on Project Hero's Texas Challenge and then the Strongest Competition, Fort Hood's first in-person Morale, Welfare and Recreation event in more than a year. Panelists Matt Broberg | Venia Logan | Sean Goggins | Georg Link Guests Ray Paik Manrique Lopez Valerio Cosentino Sponsor Linode (https://www.linode.com/) Show Notes [00:02:33] We start here with learning about what measurement tools exist in the CHAOSS project. [00:07:06] Georg gives us some context on how Bitergia, GrimoireLab, Bitergia Analytics, and CHAOSS all relate to each other. [00:09:01] Manrique fills us in on why Open Source is relevant to what they’re doing with Bitergia and GrimoireLab. [00:10:37] Since Venia is the co-creator of one of the metrics, Matt is wondering when she looks at the GrimoireLab tool chain, how does that add value to what she’s looking to achieve with it? [00:12:41] Ray has a question for Manrique and Georg and wonders what have they benefited from joining CHAOSS and what have they been able to gain from being a part of a larger community? Also, have there been other benefits that they have gained from working with other software communities related to metrics? [00:16:04] Venia mentions how she wants to applaud Bitergia for how much they advertise CHAOSS and Bitergia being completely separate entities and she explains. [00:17:55] What is the goal of using GrimoireLab and what are some examples of people using it right now? [00:22:56] Ray tells us how he uses GrimoireLab. Also, Venia gives us her thoughts on dashboarding. [00:32:22] Sean is curious to know what kinds of choices are made in the design of the GrimoireLab technology to prohibit, prevent, or create some of transparency around anything that might be used to measure and individual? Also, since Git Log stores his identifying information organically, how do they handle that technically? Manrique answers these questions. [00:00:00] Matt asks Valerio if he has any stories or ideas that come to mind on how he chose to write the software that would be interesting to somebody that may not be as deep in the code as him? [00:39:12] Valerio is a mentor for Google Summer of Code participants and he’s going to tell us a little about what that is. Picks [00:48:00] Georg’s pick is a book by Benjamin Birkinbine called, “Incorporating the Digital Commons.” [00:48:50] Venia’s pick is a term that she always uses all the time from Chris Mercer, MeasurementMarketing.io which is, “The truth is in the trend, the power is in the pattern.” [00:49:42] Manrique’s picks are quotes he uses in his presentations. One is, “If you can’t measure it, you cannot improve it.” Another one is, “Without data you a just a person with an opinion.” [00:51:21] Ray’s pick is a great book called, “The Tyranny of Metrics,” by Jerry Z. Muller. [00:52:40] Valerio’s pick is valuable advice. He says,” Metrics are important, but you need to contextualize them, and you should not understand just the metric itself, but the people who contribute to your project. When you look at the data you should have an understanding of your community to see if you are not misrepresenting or misunderstanding the data you have. [00:53:24] Sean’s pick is a technical plug to a project called PlaidML. They have a cute logo too ☺! [00:54:25] Matt’s pick is that he recently upgraded his Linux laptop to Fedora 32. It’s fun to use! Bruce McQuain from QandO joined us for another edition of Someone You Should Know. As part of his Project Hero series, Bruce posted the following story about MSG Brendan O’Connor, "This is simply an amazing story and while MSG Brendan O’Connor, ODA 765, 7th Special Forces Group is being honored, I think he’d be the first to tell you that the results of this action were truly a team effort. The story comes from various sources. …O’Connor volunteered to lead an effort to get to the besieged assault force. He fought his way to Maholic with eight Afghan soldiers, an interpreter and another Special Forces soldier. Maholic told O’Connor and his relief force to go after the wounded. O’Connor led his men along a wall that provided cover from Taliban machine-gun fire and rocket-propelled grenades. When he got to the end of the wall, O’Connor realized that the wounded soldiers were 200 feet away, across an open field. The field was covered by three Taliban machine guns. While Hernandez was firing from the ladder and his own Afghan gunners providing machine-gun fire to cover him, O’Connor started crawling toward Binney and Fuerst. Some of the Afghan soldiers tried to follow, but they were turned back by the volume of Taliban fire. With bullets smacking into the dirt and cutting the grass, O’Connor realized that he couldn’t get low enough unless he took off his body armor. So he shed his protection and crawled on. Inch by inch, he stayed below the hundreds of Taliban machine-gun rounds." The Someone You Should Know radio collaboration began as an extension of Matt Burden’s series at Blackfive. Mark Camp, 25, received the Silver Star, the military’s third-highest award for gallantry in battle, during a ceremony in Columbus, Ohio. Camp was wounded in early May during an intense campaign with Lima Company of the 3rd Battalion, 25th Marines. The company, fighting insurgents in western Iraq as part of Operation Matador, lost 23 soldiers. The former Maine resident and son of a Westbrook car dealer told The Columbus Dispatch newspaper that he was positioned at the top hatch of an amphibious assault vehicle while on patrol when a roadside bomb launched the vehicle into the air and sent shrapnel flying. The explosion burned Camp’s hands and face, but he still attempted to rescue one of his comrades trapped inside the vehicle after the blast, the newspaper reported. Bruce McQuain from QandO joined us for another edition of Someone You Should Know, the untold, inspirations true stories of the men and women fighting for us around the world. The Someone You Should Know radio collaboration began as an extension of Matt Burden’s series at Blackfive. Thanks to Matt, Bruce is now on board and we are lucky to have him as part of the show. From Bruce’s Project Hero tribute at QandO, "Soldiers in transportation units aren’t supposed to be trigger-pullers. Soldiers in transportation units are supposed to drive trucks. But the war in Iraq has changed that dynamic, and it has placed units that normally operate behind friendly lines in the forefront of the conflict. PFC Jeremy Church’s story of heroism underlines that and demonstrates there’s nothing soft about our combat service support soldiers in Iraq." What is Pundit Review Radio? What a story tonight. Bruce McQuain from QandO joined us for another edition of Someone You Should Know, the untold, inspirations true stories of the men and women fighting for us around the world. The Someone You Should Know radio collaboration began as an extension of Matt Burden’s series at Blackfive. Thanks to Matt, Bruce is now on board and we are thrilled to have him as part of the program. Bruce has been honoring the recipients of the Distinguished Service Cross in a series called Project Hero. The Distinguished Service Cross is the equal of the Navy Cross and the Air Force Cross and the only award for valor which is higher is the Medal of Honor. Keep in mind as you read and listen to this story that one media outlet wrote about it. One. Here is what Bruce wrote about PFC Stephan C. Sanford, "So even though he was wounded, shot in the leg, Sanford charged back in with his team, laying down suppressive fire while his team mates evacuated the wounded. There were so many, though, it required they go back into the house after the first group of wounded were safely extracted. During the second evacuation of wounded, a bleeding Sanford again kept the terrorists at bay while his comrades evacuated the rest of the wounded. When the last soldier was leaving the house, a terrorist shot him. The soldier dropped to the floor - shot through the neck. Sanford never hesitated. He ran back and began performing first aid, then CPR trying to keep the soldier alive. The terrorists sensed Sanford’s weak position and tried to gun him down. Now feature this. He’s performing CPR when they find him and they shoot him twice in the back while he’s trying to protect the wounded soldier with his body. Sanford turned and fought back, killing one terrorist, but while doing so was shot twice more. A total of 5 gunshot wounds during the engagement. But Sanford never quit and continued fighting, trying to save his comrade. It was only when the loss of blood was too much that he lost consciousness…" What is Pundit Review Radio? As part of his Project Hero series at QandO.net Bruce McQuain profiled recipients of the the Silver Star. Of SFC Gerald A. Wolford he wrote the following, "Wolford and his crew epitomize the everyday valor displayed by members of our armed forces. The camaraderie, professionalism and the vow never to let their buddies down are all evident in the way this crew fought, endured and persevered. They are soldiers of whom we should all be proud." And what exactly did Wolford and his crew do? According to his Silver Star citation, “Staff Sgt. Wolford’s action served to inspire other Soldiers on the battlefield and motivated his section to continue to firefight despite physical injury, vehicle damage and fatigue,” the citation said. Tonight, Bruce told us the rest of his story. The Someone You Should Know radio collaboration began as an extension of Matt Burden’s series at Blackfive. Bruce McQuain from QandO.net joined us for our Someone You Should Know series. Matt Burden from Blackfive recommended Bruce highly to take over the series. Matt is simply too busy to commit to every Sunday night. Bruce spent 28 years in the US military, is a Vietnam veteran and like Matt, was a member of the 82nd Airborne and Army Rangers. On QandO, Bruce has done a series very similar to Someone You Should Know called Project Hero which told the stories of those who were awarded the Silver Star. We are honored to have Bruce as part of the program going forward. He told us the incredible story of Kanaan Merriken and his amazing journal back to active duty service. What is Pundit Review Radio? I am very happy to announce that Bruce McQuain from QandO.net will be joining Pundit Review Radio as part of the Someone You Should Know series. Bruce is a Vietnam Veteran, a former Ranger and a really terrific guy. Matt Burden, Blackfive, introduced us this weekend and we hit it off great. For several years Bruce has been doing something similar at QandO.net called Project Hero. Bruce started Project Hero to tell the stories of all the soldiers and Marines who have won Silver Stars. He felt, as we do, that these stories are not being told. Can't wait to get started. What is Pundit Review Radio? Pundit Review Radio is where the old media meets the new.
