"I always like starting with something out of context..." He of WH Lung greatness and now a solo live artist & DJ delivers a belter of a mix. Having grown up in Manchester's DIY band scene, Tom Sharkett came late to these things called dancing clubs and all that came with it, discovering electronic music through synthesizers while recording with his most excellent band W. H. Lung. His journey from guitar music to the dancefloor mirrors his present-day musical output; a collision of post-punk abrasiveness and the electronic that feels equally at home in sweaty basements and proper nightclubs. Now based back in Todmorden, Tom has carved out his own niche releasing on Optimo Music and System Olympia's Okay Nature label... and it's a bloody brilliant niche! His production approach remains coloured by those early days of bedroom experimentation with friends, citing the peerless Andrew Weatherall's fearlessly exploratory spirit as a key inspiration. It's interesting how he keeps coming around and around again, doesn't it? "His approach reminds me of the excited feeling I had trying to record things in my bedroom with my friends with anything we had at our disposal and just experimenting with the weird and wonderful results," When it comes to disc jockeying, Tom brings that same experimental energy. This mix was recorded in his panoramic valley-view studio in Todmorden, captures that ethos perfectly, opening with Spacemen 3 before wandering through territory that spans from Tirzah-esque experimentalism to classic New Beat. Between touring with Julie Byrne, collaborating with Raf Rundell - more on that to come soon pop pickers - and working on a new solo record featuring multiple vocalists, Tom's not a 'sit still' kind of guy. Just how we like it. Get it on, let's go... read more below. https://www.theransomnote.com/music/mixes/tom-sharkett-the-altered-currents-mix/ @tomsharkett @whlung

This episode features two of the Art on a Postcard Summer Auction artists, Ben Edge and Dave White. Ben and Rosa discuss his current exhibition with the Museum of British Folklore down in the Crypt at Kings Cross. Dave and Rosa discuss discuss dinosaurs, authenticity and Nike Jordans. Ben Edge is a visual artist and songwriter who lives and works in North London. He grew up in Southborough, Kent, spending weekends visiting his Dad in Shoreditch, London, where he developed a passion for local history, storytelling, and folklore. Ben studied fine art at London Metropolitan University and since graduating in 2008, has exhibited in numerous group shows, including: BP Portrait Award at the National Portrait Gallery and National Gallery of Scotland, where his portrait of his grandfather, 'The Animal Handler' was shortlisted for the prize. Since his debut solo show at Hix Gallery in 2017, Ben has embarked on the ‘Frontline Folklore' project, exploring the folk customs, traditions and ritual practices of the British Isles, and producing a series of twenty paintings and a full-length documentary film in response to his research, that will be going display in collaboration with the Museum of British Folklore throughout June 2021 at the Crypt Gallery, St Pancras New Church, London. Ben has also created artwork and art-directed music videos for the Fat White Family and Raf Rundell, and released his own debut solo album on Glass Modern Records, New Tradition, written simultaneously with his ‘Frontline Folklore' series. Dave White is a contemporary British Artist who dedicates his work to celebrating popular culture and interpreting emotive issues. White graduated with a BA (Hons) Fine Art (Painting) at Liverpool John Moores University and has enjoyed success from the inception of his career, with selection for the Northern Graduates exhibition at the Royal College of Art in 1994, whilst also debuting at Sotheby's London and international art fairs. White pioneered the 'Sneaker Art' movement in 2002, with the execution of pop art inspired sneaker oil portraits, leading to long term collaborations with Nike and Brand Jordan which continue to this day. White is one of a handful of artists to have his own signature Jordan releases. In 2016 White collaborated on an international signature sneaker project with Size? x Nike for the AM95 DW, depicting both the Rabbit and Fox artworks from the Albion Collection. Whilst White has pursued many subject matters over the last twenty years, for the last decade he has been focussed on environmental issues by promoting endangered species with his signature expressive portraits. With charitable colaborations and donations of work, he has supported Virunga National Park, Tusk, Rainforest Foundation UK and Wild Aid, and Project Zero. Ben Edge has donated Lots 387-389 and Dave White has donated Lot 397 to the Art on a Postcard Summer Auction to help raise money for The Hepatitis C Trust.
