The Prodigy 'G-Force' Mix, 2019 update & Strongroom Suite

In remembrance of Keith Flint who passed away on March 4th. I made this mix in 2009 for a collective I was in; 'Generic People'. Myself and Ant (of the crew) were playing the support spot to Leeroy Thornhill; a founding member of The Prodigy, at the after party for a gig they were playing, down at 'The Marquee' in Cork, in June of the same year. Leeroy is the one credited with teaching Keith how to perform. This combined with Maxim’s magnetic Mc’ng, Liam Howlett’s bonkers blend of ballistic boom bap breakbeats, razorsharp rave riffs, rootical reggae riddims and rowdy raucous rock. And tied together with their punk posse posturing proved they were an unstoppable force. The mix I made was described by the Webmaster on the official Prodigy Website as “The best Prodigy mix I’ve ever heard” so you know that’s a seal of approval, of sorts. So I thought it was worth sharing again, at this time. I’ve tacked on a new suite of some of their finest work, in light of Keef (as he was affectionately known) shuffling off this mortal coil To most people of my generation The Prodigy were a pretty big deal. Part of the appeal of the group, for me, is that they were a bunch of friends clearly having a good time and it mirrored my experience as a teenager. The Prodigy were part of the soundtrack to those days. I vividly remember practicing “The Prodigy Dance” with a bunch of lads from my neighbourhood, that I used to pal around with. We would watch the ‘Everybody in the Place’ video over and over trying to get Leeroy’s moves down. One of the lads eventually nailed it after a bit of perseverance (It’s pretty tricky and mesmerising to watch if the mood strikes you to look it up). I’ve been with them all the way on their journey from cartoon ravers to electronic punks. I grew up with The Prodigy and The Prodigy grew up too. The first time I got to see them perform live was in Cork’s City Hall in December of ‘93 and whilst they weren’t the fully fledged firebrand that they would go on to become, one thing for certain was that their live shows were full throttle and elevated them to another dimension. Sizzling with heat & energy. Turbocharged with the vitality Flint brought to the stage, the trouble starter, the punkin' instigator, one of the ultimate hype men. I saw them 5 more times after; In '94 (again at Cork City Hall), at the legendary 'Féile','95, supporting Oasis on 2 occasions in 1996- all in Páirc Uí Chaoimh and at Live at the Marquee in 2009, where I got the opportunity to support Thornhill at the after party. They always rolled out a rip roaring romp when they graced the stage and honed their skills over the years to become one of the best live acts on the scene. From cutting their teeth on the rave circuit and upping their game each time a new tour came round. Carrying on that British tradition of multicultural groups flying in the face of convention, clashing up cultures and smashing up the silos of sound along the way. They did more than any other act to unite people from disparate backgrounds. Evidenced in them being the first major dance act to break the U.S., reaching number one into the bargain. Propelled by Flint’s spitfire persona, the ringmaster of the Prodigy circus. Their first 3 albums were game changers for the dance music community and continue to be regarded as high-water marks for the culture. Fitting that a man by the name of Flint would light a fire under a whole generation of magic people, voodoo people. To the god of hell fire, the voice of a jilted generation. “The flame that burns twice as bright, burns half as long.” The fire has flickered out but his incendiary energy lives on. If everybody’s in the place, then we’ll start the dance. R.I.P. up the sound system! Rave In Peace Chief Keef. Rip up the soundsystem No Good( start the dance) Jericho Invaders Must Die Ruff in the jungle bizness Warriors dance Weather Experience (Top Buzz Mix) Your Love Worlds on fire Firestarter (Instrumental) Fire (Sunrise version) One Love Hyperspeed (G-Force part 2) Break & Enter Smack My bitch up Breathe Mindfields (headrock dub) Funky shit Girls Spitfire Out of space Scienide Voodoo People (paranormal attack mix) What evil lurks Omen Reprise Omen ***The Strongroom Suite***

Aretha Franklin Tribute Mix Part 2

Here’s Part 2 of my tribute mix to Aretha Franklin. A selection of my favourite uptempo tracks from right across her career. You can find Part 1 here: https://www.podomatic.com/podcasts/tantricdex/episodes/2018-08-30T14_13_56-07_00 Both a 20th and 21st century cultural icon, creating a legacy spanning over 6 decades and known all over the world simply by her first name: Aretha. We’re never going to have an artist with a career as bountiful and constantly surprising as hers. And we’re unlikely to see another superstar as steeped in self-confidence at so many different stages of life, across as many genres. She changed where the stress fell in popular singing. You could glean a story from the lyrics but also hear it in the timbre and tone of her voice — agony, ecstasy and everything in between. “When it comes to expressing yourself through song, there is no one who can touch her. She is the reason why women want to sing” (Mary J. Blige) And when Aretha Franklin is described as the most successful singer in history, this is not just a reference to the statistics, although she released 131 singles, 42 albums, entered the Billboard Charts 88 times, and won 18 Grammys. (the now-defunct female R&B vocal performance category seemed designed just for her; she won the first 8) What is meant above all when we talk of her success, is her influence as an artist. In 1987, she was the first woman inducted into the 'Rock and Roll Hall of Fame', and in 2008 Rolling Stone put her in the No. 1 position among the “100 greatest singers of all time”. Aretha Franklin had the most students, one of the reasons being that she did not shy away from the popular and commercial, instead seeking it out like a pastor who loves to preach most when the church is full. “Music changes, and I’m gonna change right along with it” (Aretha Franklin) Franklin found homes across many genres: From Gospel to Soul, Blues, Funk, Disco, Rock, Pop, House and even Opera. Early Eighties collaborations with Luther Vandross were a smooth slide into rare groove, a mid-Eighties makeover made her an MTV star, hip-hop acts from Pete Rock to Public Enemy mined her work for beats, 1994’s “A Deeper Love” made her a chart-topping modern house diva (a genre that long favoured big belting black voices), a collaboration with Lauryn Hill linked her to the burgeoning neo-soul movement and by 2014 she gracefully covered Adele. Her music continues to be remixed and reworked today, a testament to her staying power and her music’s lasting legacy. I can safely say I've never done a gig without playing at least one of her cuts. The vocal achievements of Aretha Franklin have informed much of modern music. Franklin’s powerful instrument can be heard across a recording career that spans 60 years. Her fingerprints are all over the history of popular music. An object lesson in how a singer can embody and define her time. a consummate story-teller; unpolished, raw and unbridled. Part 2- https://www.podomatic.com/podcasts/tantricdex/episodes/2018-09-09T06_06_49-07_00 Aretha Franklin is without question the most accomplished vocalist in popular music – the undisputed Queen of Soul. And although there have been many pretenders to the throne, she still reigns supreme, regularly cited as the greatest female singer of modern times. A titan, with a voice that turned every room into a Cathedral. Her cultural impact is immeasurable. A child prodigy who began singing in her father’s church aged 12 and made her first record at 14. Ms. Franklin was a deeply reserved artist who spoke little about her art and shied away from revealing too much about her personal life. She once described her music as "me, with my hand outstretched, hoping someone will take it". Hers was a a life of heroism, heartbreak and hope and she articulated adversities and injustices that still exist today. A motherless child who grew up in extremely difficult circumstances fighting her way with attitude, pride and the unyielding will of a performer who became a symbol for the civil rights movement. She was also a champion of the women's rights movement giving them one of their early anthems with her rabble-rousing rendition of Otis Redding's ‘Respect’. Her ability to stimulate emotion is a talent few artists have ever been able to emulate. And her piano-playing prowess was unparalleled. Throughout her storied 60 year career she soulfully serenaded us with lush laments about love, loss and lust which will have a long lasting legacy. Born in Memphis and raised in Detroit, a city steeped in musical history and famed for producing icons in the industry. Franklin passed up the opportunity to sign with the legendary Motown label. However, Motown's most famous artists from Diana Ross to Marvin Gaye and Michael Jackson were greatly influenced by her. It’s no coincidence that the Motown Museum laid out a book of condolence when the news of her death broke, playing nothing but her music all weekend. She spent most of her life living in Detroit, with the City celebrating her life by holding a 4 day event in memorial of her passing. A send off fit for a Queen. Her impact as an artist is first and foremost attributable to her style and skill as a singer. Her vivacious voice – a glorious mix of gospel, jazz, blues and soul. There are no words that can properly describe it – the authenticity of it, the agony in it, the strength of it, the magic in it, the depth to it. It is utterly sublime, an ethereal instrument from an extraordinary woman. It’s difficult not to have some degree of physical or emotional response to her brilliant and impassioned voice as it swoops and soars with effortless intensity. The ease with which she skips octaves in ‘You’re All I Need to Get By’, the force of the top notes she delivers in ‘Think’, the sassiness in the liberating cries of ‘Respect’, the velvety tone of her voice in ‘Day Dreaming’ and the playfulness of her inventive phrasing in ‘Jump To It’ have influenced generations of singers. The late singer is also renowned for her ability to so inhabit someone else’s song that it became completely her own. So much so that fellow singers would simply stop singing them. Stevie Wonder is famously quoted as saying “If Aretha took your song, you weren’t getting it back”. But she was much more than an interpreter, she wrote songs too often with her sisters Carolyn and Erma (who had a hit with ‘Piece of My Heart’). Never one to shy away, she was fully invested in the craft of record-making and was fully involved in the production of her music. Working out the rhythm part, the piano arrangement and the vocal lines. She poured her heart and soul into each and every one of her tracks. The fortitude of the blues, the sincerity of soul, the expressiveness of jazz and, above all, the spirituality of gospel are all apparent in her finest work. She is gone, but those songs will endure. Make no mistake, we have lost one of the greatest voices to have ever graced this planet. Aretha has shuffled off this mortal coil, but her legacy, her ability to move people through her music, will remain well intact. Her place in history is secure. There is no one to fill her shoes because quite frankly she is incomparable. The Queen is dead, long live the Queen! Here’s a selection of my favourite cuts, on a down-tempo tip, from across her 6 decades as a recording artist. I’ll post Part II, which features the best examples of her uptempo work, in the coming days. Image by Bill Sienkiewicz *Also I'd like to say a special thanks to Jay Negron (AKA J*ski) who I contacted about his edit of Tom Moulton's mix of 'Since you've been gone' Jay re-edited it and sent it on to Tom who did some more work on it before he passed it on to me. This is a big deal for me as Tom Moulton is one of my heroes. So to know he did some work on a track on my behalf means a lot to me. La Vie en rose, La Dolce Vita however you like to refer to it, it's summertime here in the northern hemisphere and the living is indeed easy. I usually reach for songs like these on days like this. They're sure to turn a good day into a lovely day. The sprinkles on the ice-cream,if you will. Celebrating 10 years of my Podcast this month and rather neatly this is the 300th installment. To mark the occasion I'm re-posting the first thing I uploaded in April 2008, the episode itself dates back to April 2003 and is pretty representative of the type of stuff I was DJ'ng at the time. It was all done live on 3 turntables and is the hardest I've ever physically worked on a mix. The name 'Tantric Dex' comes from a show I was doing back then on the defunct 'Radio Friendly',a pirate station, here in Cork, that I had a weekly slot on. You can read a little bit about it here : https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pirate_radio_in_Cork#Radio_Friendly I didn't have a name for the programme initially, so I asked listeners to text in with any suggestions. The first one through simply said "Tantric Dex", I laughed out loud and pretty much ignored all the other texts. I was fond of the name because it was humorous and rationalised it in my head by thinking that when 2 songs blend well together; it's eargasmic. I christened the show with the name and used it as a moniker for music I produced and subsequently as the title of this Podcast. The mix was recorded as a promo tool for the show and for my club sets. This was back in the day when I'd hand people CD's at gigs or leave them in flier racks all around town, simpler times. No track-list for this, there's over 100 songs featured, I'd be all day typing them out, but you'll have fun spotting the tunes. Thank you, as always, for listening over this past decade. Neil

An abundance of good music released over the course of this year, many firm favourites from across the board, so many, in fact, that I've decided to split this episode into two parts. It was an impossible feat trying to get everything in to one 3 hour mix and I didn't have the heart to cut any of these gems. Here's the first batch, of the best of what 2017 had to offer on a more down-tempo tip, with the second part to follow next week. I've moved the lounge for this one... I've also re-loaded 2016 and 2015's selections If you missed them first time around, or you fancy taking them for another spin. https://www.podomatic.com/podcasts/tantricdex/episodes/2016-12-29T18_09_15-08_00 https://www.podomatic.com/podcasts/tantricdex/episodes/2015-12-30T01_54_58-08_00 Thanks for taking the time to pop by these past 12 months. Updated (14 October 15:40 GMT) Bit of a milestone, as it's the 100th episode, I guess I should probably share a few thoughts, with you the listener. Dance music was my first love, the first type of music that I took seriously. Prior to that I would have been your typical kid who listened to pop music. We lived in a house where someone always had music on, be it the radio in the kitchen that my mother was listening to or emanating from all the rooms simultaneously upstairs. That all changed in 1988 during what was dubbed "The Second Summer of Love". There was a real air of optimism about. Life was changing and the music we were gravitating towards was reflecting this. It all felt new and exciting as a bona fide revolution in youth culture was taking place. It was rebellious and as a pre-pubescent I wanted a part of the action. The Cul-de-sac we lived in formed a natural congregation point for the kids in my neighbourhood and someone always had a stereo on as we played in "the square" as it was referred to. I decided to take up the mantle one afternoon and got my first taste of playing music selector to an audience. Naturally I was hooked. I was initially drawn to the sample based, 'Cut 'n' Paste' style of acts like Bomb The Bass, S'Express and Coldcut and anything I could hear via radio on Simon Young's Dance Show on 2FM and later Pete Tong's Essential selection on BBC Radio 1. I'd tape the shows and listen to them all week trying to track down the records I was hearing. This of course was pre-internet so what followed was a lot of humming in record shops to bemused staff. We had one of those old style record players in our house that could go down to 16 rpm and up to 78 rpm, on top of the usual 33 and 45 and my first foray into concocting mixes was making pause button tapes, messing about with the speeds of the various records in my collection and whatever else we had around the house. Which included my sister's Madonna, Janet Jackson and Gloria Estefan LP's along with a cache of vinyl, which my dad won playing poker, I was later informed. The collection he acquired included a lot of music that was alien to me at the time such as The Band and Pretty Purdie who had a song called 'Funky Donkey' that I developed a fondness for solely because of how absurd a song title it was. I investigated each record in the haul in the same manner that I still do today and put to one side the one's that stood out for me adding them to my stock. I also learned something valuable that day and that was; that, sometimes, it's worth going off the beaten track to discover music for yourself, as it can be extremely rewarding. In 1992 I started working part time, after school, saved up and got my first set of proper turntables. This was back in a time when Ireland's licensing laws were a bit lax and I started sneaking into nightclubs. This opened me up to a whole other world of music and I forged friendships that still hold strong to this day. I was well and truly bitten by the bug and decided that DJ'ng was the profession for me and by 1995 I was gigging regularly and making a living from something that started out as a passion. It's a passion that has never waned. Music still excites me as much now as it did then and I enjoy seeking out and listening to as much new music as I can. Everyday I hear something that blows my mind. So to the mix itself. I decided to take a look back at the history of dance music from the first nightclubs in Paris in the 1950's, to the Sound System culture of Jamaica in the 60's, on to the Discotheques and Block Parties of New York in the 70's, the House music of Chicago, Techno in Detroit, the Balearic Beat of Ibiza, the UK Rave scene in the 80's and beyond to what is now a global phenomenon. It's been fascinating for me to see how dance music evolved from disco to house to techno to drum n bass and mutated into 100's of sub genres and come full circle. History shows us how it's all cyclical and connected like one big organism. Dance music has had many names but only one purpose and that's to get you moving. Dancing is an inherent part of our DNA. It's primal, it unites and truly breaks down barriers. Nightclubs can be magical places transporting us to another dimension, away from the mundane and allows us forget about our troubles, even if only for a night. For this mix I've selected some of my four to the floor favourites. Cramming in as much as I could. There's nods here to seminal tracks and key figures in the evolution of it all. I've had many memorable moments to all these songs, they remind me of different points, places and people. They're tracks that will always hold a special place in my heart for a variety of reasons and in most cases are the best examples, for me, of the many flavours of club music. Thank you as always for lending me your ears, it's greatly appreciated.
