Musical Pathways With SARAH McLEOD From THE SUPERJESUS

HEAVY Music Interviews

Interview by Kris PetersThe Superjesus have been a mainstay on the Australian rock scene for more than three decades.Their infectious music coupled with arguably one of the best live shows in the country have endeared the band to generations of music lovers since their inception in the late 1990s, with the band's debut album Sumo in 1998 spawning fan favourites such as Down Again, Saturation and Now and Then. The follow-up, Jet Age, magnified the growing popularity of The Superjesus, delivering the smash hit Gravity as well as Secret Agent Man before Rock Music rounded out the trifecta in 2003.A brief hiatus from the mid 2000s gave the band members time to reflect on their personal music ambitions before deciding the world needed more of their music in 2013. This produced an EP, Love and Violence (2016), as well as a double live album but despite The Superjesus quickly reclaiming their status amongst Australia's elite touring band's, no new music has been forthcoming. That changes this Friday, March 21, when The Superjesus (self-titled) comes out, fuelled by the success of six previous singles Money (We're Only In It For Love), Lights Out, We Won't Let Go Until It's Over, Something Good, a cover of Generation X's Dancing With Myself and beautiful ballad Diamonds. This is the new Superjesus, a more soulful, engaging version of the band we know and love where song writing is king.HEAVY caught up with frontwoman Sarah McLeod to find out more. We bring up a quote she made to HEAVY in October last year where she proclaimed "I shit you not, but it's the best stuff we've ever written", and ask if she still feels that way after the album has had more time to digest. A smile swept across her face before replying with a simple "yeah"."I guess maybe that's why I love it so much," she continued, "because I'm so connected to it. And I just feel like we've got better. I feel like we did a great job in the 90s, and we were happy with those records, but we had 10 years off, and we all went and did different music. We learnt stuff. Ruddy (Stuart, bass) was in all these different bands, and he came back with a whole library of new influences and so did I. And we're like, okay, we're the same people, but we're not really because we've learnt all this stuff. So why don't we bring in the cool shit that we've learned and make something different, but paying homage to who we were. And that's where we're at. And I think it's been really good for us. And I love it."In the full interview, Sarah expressed her excitement about the album, which has seen the release of six singles over the past 18 months. She highlighted her favourite track, Gangbusters, and explained the strategic decision to hold back some songs to build anticipation. She emphasized that while there is no external pressure, she feels a personal drive to deliver quality music, reflecting the band's evolution and commitment to their craft.Sarah shared insights into her songwriting process, noting a shift towards creating cohesive narratives rather than standalone lyrics. She discussed the challenges of balancing her solo work with that of The Superjesus, particularly in terms of lyrical content and audience resonance. The conversation also touched on the creative process, where Sarah likened songwriting to an alchemical journey that requires refinement to achieve simplicity. She said she believes that effective songs often stem from straightforward lyrics that engage audiences, a principle she strives to uphold in her work. We discussed the band's upcoming tour and what to expect musically, as well as the opportunity for local band's to open in each city and more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Send us a Text Message. The Pan Am Museum Foundation recognizes the month of May as Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander Heritage Month and in this episode we explore the history of Pan Am's “Nisei” Stewardesses with Dr. Christine R. Yano, retired professor of anthropology at the University of Hawai'I and author of the book, Airbourne Dreams: “Nisei” Stewardesses and Pan American World Airways. This book is the story of an unusual personnel program implemented by an American corporation intent on expanding and dominating the nascent market for international air travel. That program reflected the Jet Age dreams of global mobility that excited postwar Americans, as well as the inequalities of gender, class, race, and ethnicity that constrained many of them. The Japanese word “Nisei” means second generation Japanese American.  In 1955, Pan Am began recruiting Japanese American women to work as stewardesses on its Tokyo-bound flights and for the airline's celebrated round-the-world flights. Based in Honolulu, these women were informally known as Pan Am's “Nisei” stewardesses, even though not all of them were Japanese American or even second-generation. They were hired for their Japanese-language skills, but in reality…few spoke Japanese fluently. However, the main reason for the hiring of these women was to enhance the airline's image of exotic cosmopolitanism and worldliness as the iconic American company pioneered new frontiers of race, language, and culture. These young women left home to travel the globe with Pan Am, forging their own cosmopolitan identities in the process. In 2014, Chantelle Rose Acorda, Kim Nguyen, and Jasmine Pigford made a well-done student film and interviewed Hawaii state senator Glenn S. Wakai and Pan Am veterans Ailenn Sodetani and Mae Takahashi. The Japanese Cultural Center of Hawaii produced a short educational film, Pan Am Ambassadors, with interviews of Pan Am "Nisei" stewardesses. Support the Show. Visit Us for more Pan Am History! When the Boeing 747 first came out it revolutionized the already revolutionary Jet Age. Able to carry more than twice as many passengers as it's predecessors, the 747 was initally designed for cargo. Boeing thought it would be quickly outstripped by the U.S.'s SST. But when the 'American Concorde' was scrapped in favor of breathable air and no sonic booms over major cities (see our episode Boom, Clap for deets), the 747 became the plane of choice for high passenger load routes. Who should swipe right on me?I got a thing for those who seek independence, crave adventure and keep their wits even in unchartered waters. I'm looking for a date who likes to break barriers, sink stereotypes and enjoys stepping back in time. If you have a wanderlust to discover new places and meet new people, we can fly to new heights together. What are my most attractive traits?I have these five dear friends who tell mind-blowing stories about their time as Pan Am stewardesses in the ‘50s, ‘60s and ‘70s. I've heard the stories so many times I can tell them myself. I've got funny stories about their times in training, harrowing memories of them surviving hijackings and war zones, tear-jerkers about them helping to rescue babies from Vietnam, and infuriating reminders of the chauvinism they endured. There's a little dorkiness in each of us. Here's what makes me dorky.I enjoy busting myths and stomping on stereotypes. I'm pretty forceful in clearing up misperceptions. It makes me furious when I hear comments about how stewardesses were just vapid, promiscuous young women. That's simply not true, and I have the facts to prove it.I like to be inspirational. Here is one of my favorite quotes to inspire you.“As individuals, stewardesses shared an instinct to roam that propelled their personal and professional growth, each woman in her own way. As a group, stewardesses forever shifted the American woman's place in her country and the world.”I'm a sucker for a great one-liner. Here's one of my favorites.“What was revolutionary was the lack of should in this job, the plenitude of could.”What do I spend a lot of time thinking about?I find myself marveling at contradictions. An unmarried American woman in a powder blue Pan Am uniform enjoyed the independence to roam around Beirut or Moscow without an escort in the 1960s but did not enjoy the independence to legally purchase birth control pills when she returned home. I'm full of these thought-provoking contradictions. What will we eat/drink on our first date?We will be dining at an upscale French bistro, of course, but we will get to know each other over dry martinis, just like my Pan Am friends used to serve in long-stemmed glasses on all those transcontinental flights. If that first date goes well, I'll want to take you home to introduce you to you know who. Let me tell you about them.Julia Cooke is a journalist best known for her travel writing. Her debut novel “The Other Side of Paradise: Life in the New Cuba” won critical acclaim. My book mama is the daughter of a Pan Am executive, but she didn't think too much about the airline's historical significance until she met two of my Pan Am friends. She knew she had to give credit to these smart, sophisticated pioneers who made it easier for women of her generation to be independent, risk-taking, globe-trotting professionals. What celebrity would sound best if you dated my audio version?Christina Hendricks could certainly tell you all about the heady days of jet travel in the 1960s and early ‘70s. Just like the character she played on “Mad Men,” my Pan Am friends know all about how to thrive in a man's world. The DetailsPublisher - Houghton Mifflin HarcourtPages: 288Publication Date: March 2, 2021

Come Fly the World: The Jet-Age Story of the Women of Pan Am by Julia Cooke Glamour, danger, liberation: in a Mad Men–era of commercial flight, Pan Am World Airways attracted the kind of young woman who wanted out, and wanted up Required to have a college education, speak two languages, and possess the political savvy of a Foreign Service officer, a jet-age stewardess serving on iconic Pan Am between 1966 and 1975 also had to be between 5′3" and 5′9", between 105 and 140 pounds, and under 26 years of age at the time of hire.Cooke’s intimate storytelling weaves together the real-life stories of a memorable cast of characters, from small-town girl Lynne Totten, a science major who decided life in a lab was not for her, to Hazel Bowie, one of the relatively few Black stewardesses of the era, as they embraced the liberation of their new jet-set life. Cooke brings to light the story of Pan Am stewardesses’ role in the Vietnam War, as the airline added runs from Saigon to Hong Kong for planeloads of weary young soldiers straight from the battlefields, who were off for five days of R&R, and then flown back to war. Finally, with Operation Babylift—the dramatic evacuation of 2,000 children during the fall of Saigon—the book’s special cast of stewardesses unites to play an extraordinary role on the world stage.

Richard Southwick, Partner at the international architecture firm Beyer Blinder Belle, tells the fascinating story behind the preservation, restoration and reinvention of Eero Saarinen’s architectural masterpiece, the TWA Flight Center at J F Kennedy International Airport, now called the TWA Hotel. Saarinen described the head house form as being like the “Leonardo da Vinci flying machine", according to his associate Kevin Roche.  Hailed as the “Grand Central of the Jet Age,” the TWA Flight Center welcomed hundreds of thousands of travelers to JFK Airport from 1962 through 2001. Since then tens of thousands of people have been touring the building. We talk about the beautiful design of the building, the genius of Eero Saarinen and Richard’s favorite role models as well as his top three projects over his successful career.

There’s a building at JFK airport in New York that people have been talking about for almost 60 years.  At one time, it was the world's most modern airport terminal, bringing the Jet Age fully into public consciousness.  This building had no peer; and its creator, Eero Saarinen, was one of the most visionary architects in the world. For years the airline TWA (later absorbed by American Airlines) used it as a glamorous gateway to the world, sending off passengers in an era people dressed up to fly and there was no such thing as airport security.  The volume of passengers increased so much that the building had to be abandoned.  After a few decades in mothballs, and dangerously close to demolition, Saarinen’s TWA terminal has been meticulously restored and expanded, with a world-class hotel adjacent and even better, a massive underground conference facility you’d never know was there. Host George Smart was in New York for a huge gala opening inside that underground conference center.  He talked with Richard Southwick, project partner in charge with restoration architects Beyer Blinder Belle.  But first, George sat down in Los Angeles at the iconic Beverly Hilton with Saarinen’s son, Eric Saarinen. Then George is back in New York with architects Anne Marie Lubrano and Lea Ciaverra, of the not-surprisingly named firm Lubrano Ciaverra, for the brilliant new TWA hotel, you know, he one with the massive underground conference facility.

After fleeing the cold and damp of jolly old England at the age of twenty one, Jet spent fifteen years in Chicago living a mostly mundane life until a divorce changed her life. After fourteen years and two marriages without ever achieving an orgasm, she discovered that she was not actually frigid but indeed was multiorgasmic. During the next year she experimented and made a point of acting out every fantasy she and her lovers could imagine. In 2010 when she was fifty, Jet tried dating a little on the mundane dating sites, but had no luck finding anyone suitable. From dabbling her toes in the Kink universe Jet then blossomed, exploring her sexuality even further as she let go all her inhibitions and became a squirter and then a gusher. At the age of seventy Jet continues to expand her horizons and feels she is just now starting to reach her sexual peak, and intends to party hearty until she drops, hopefully with a huge smile on her face. https://www.kinkycast.com/archive/2019-archive/293---milady_jet---age-has.html

Throughout human history, we’ve wanted to fly – and to fly fast. So it’s hard to resist Blake Scholl’s idea. His startup, Boom, is building a new supersonic jet, which will fly at twice the speed of sound. If he succeeds, it could be the biggest disruption to air travel since the Jet Age of the 1960s. But progress always has a price. There’s the sonic boom, yes. But also — what happens when the world’s wealthiest can descend en masse on places that used to be hard to reach? And what happens to all of us when supersonic speeds up our already sped-up world? To help us see around this corner, host Caterina Fake discusses the possibilities with Boom Founder and CEO Blake Scholl, and special guests including author Anand Giridharadas, physicist Janna Levin, comedian Baratunde Thurston, and Quartz Editor-in-Chief Kevin Delaney.

Capt. Steve Taylor (Ret.) joins host Craig Price to discuss his life as a commercial pilot. Not many people get to fly commercial jets for a living so when Craig had the chance to get Steve Taylor on the podcast to discuss his latest book "Wheels Up: Sky Jinks in the Jet Age" he was sure to ask about how Steve became a pilot, why regional airlines have such young pilots, why the military fosters cockiness in their pilots and where is some hairy places to land. Craig also learns that Steve has a very narrow view on what "dangerous" really means and how close a "close call" must be before Steve even thinks it's a problem. The stories in "Wheels Up" are not made up. They are the real deal true antics of a jet age pilot in the high-octane environment of the cockpit. Some will give you pause and make you think, some will knock the wind out of you, and some will make you throw your head back and laugh. From the hallowed halls of The Citadel to the sometimes dark skies of Vietnam to the pranks and high jinks of a game-faced pilot, Captain Steve Taylor will fly you to places few have seen. You can learn more about Steve and his books at http://www.stevetaylorbooks.com APP BONUS: Read Chapter 1 of "Wheels Up: Sky Jinks in the Jet Age" titled "No Landing Pilot" by downloading the app!
