Summer is upon us once more! What better soundtrack than HTTT? Our guest this week is the amazing Paul Groves. Hailing from Guildford, Surrey, (UK), Paul developed a passion for house music and started DJ'ing in the early 90's, making regular appearances in bars, clubs and underground parties across London and the South East. After a ten-year break, Paul returned to the decks in 2009 after being inspired by Greg Wilson's seminal disco/edits Essential Mix on Radio 1. He quickly established himself as a resident DJ for Shade Disco where his love of nu-disco, filtered, soulful and jackin' house, have seen him on warm-up duties for Michael Gray, The Shapeshifters, Late Nite Tuff Guy, Dr Packer, Hifi Sean, Fingerman and Babert to name but a few. Indicia is a local artist who combines his love for queer community spaces and sweaty dancefloors to deliver DJ sets that frolic between radical experimentalism and wicked fun. Not only is he one of the co-heads of Signal club night and Nightfall, but he also held a year-long Friday night residency at Boney downstairs. To date, just some of his bookings include events and clubs like LEFAG, Point Blank, Glamorama, Unicorns, Honcho Disko, Outpost and more, with international support slots under the belt for the likes Courtesy, Boris and Rayna Russom. His debut EP, Watch Out, was also released earlier this year. 2019 Dec Let there be (beach) house! Beach and Bargrooves. Starts chilled but you will end up on your feet. The pre-millennials will recognize the HedKandi homage. When CDs were still a thing and labels could make money, compilations such as the HedKandi ones were a must and introduce a whole generation to house in all its forms and iterations. We paid for them , discovered tunes and artists curated by the music directors of the labels. A very different landscape to the A.I. spotified generated playlists which due to the algorithm merely selects a very narrow sample what you are "supposed" to like. Here is an attempt to resurrect the genre with current tunes. There will be about 9 to 10 episodes in the “Let there be House” series, hopefully each with its unique flavour. No particular order but for the fact that we will go up tempo throughout the uploads. First episode runs from 112 bpm to 120, yet manages to get you on your feet. Here’s Part 2 of my tribute mix to Aretha Franklin. A selection of my favourite uptempo tracks from right across her career. We’re never going to have an artist with a career as bountiful and constantly surprising as hers. And we’re unlikely to see another superstar as steeped in self-confidence at so many different stages of life, across as many genres. She changed where the stress fell in popular singing. You could glean a story from the lyrics but also hear it in the timbre and tone of her voice — agony, ecstasy and everything in between. “When it comes to expressing yourself through song, there is no one who can touch her. She is the reason why women want to sing” (Mary J. Blige) And when Aretha Franklin is described as the most successful singer in history, this is not just a reference to the statistics, although she released 131 singles, 42 albums, entered the Billboard Charts 88 times, and won 18 Grammys. (the now-defunct female R&B vocal performance category seemed designed just for her; she won the first 8) What is meant above all when we talk of her success, is her influence as an artist. In 1987, she was the first woman inducted into the 'Rock and Roll Hall of Fame', and in 2008 Rolling Stone put her in the No. 1 position among the “100 greatest singers of all time”. Aretha Franklin had the most students, one of the reasons being that she did not shy away from the popular and commercial, instead seeking it out like a pastor who loves to preach most when the church is full. “Music changes, and I’m gonna change right along with it” (Aretha Franklin) Franklin found homes across many genres: From Gospel to Soul, Blues, Funk, Disco, Rock, Pop, House and even Opera. Early Eighties collaborations with Luther Vandross were a smooth slide into rare groove, a mid-Eighties makeover made her an MTV star, hip-hop acts from Pete Rock to Public Enemy mined her work for beats, 1994’s “A Deeper Love” made her a chart-topping modern house diva (a genre that long favoured big belting black voices), a collaboration with Lauryn Hill linked her to the burgeoning neo-soul movement and by 2014 she gracefully covered Adele. Her music continues to be remixed and reworked today, a testament to her staying power and her music’s lasting legacy. I can safely say I've never done a gig without playing at least one of her cuts. The vocal achievements of Aretha Franklin have informed much of modern music. Franklin’s powerful instrument can be heard across a recording career that spans 60 years. Her fingerprints are all over the history of popular music. An object lesson in how a singer can embody and define her time. a consummate story-teller; unpolished, raw and unbridled. A long mooted biopic, that has been years in the works. Gives us something to look forward to and of course there's her expansive body of work that we can forever enjoy. In 2015 Emanuel Satie carved a name for himself through a series of dancefloor bombs released on imprints like DTFD, Get Physical and Audiojack’s Gruuv. This good run of releases culminated in him being included in Resident Advisor’s 'Top Charted Tracks of 2015' (that would be the track 'Private Show’ on Get Physical, a track which Pete Tong championed as having 'probably my favourite bassline of 2015’). But Satie were only warming up, and 2016 saw him produce an even more consistent string of successful tracks. His rework of Late Nite Tuff Guy’s remix of DJ Le Roi & Roland Clark’s 'I Get Deep' hit number 1 on the overall Beatport charts and held strong in the top 5 for 6 weeks. Then there is his his debut single on Nic Fancuilli’s Saved Records, 'Come As You Are’, which got a fair rinsing across the scene’s biggest dancefloors. And the transformation from aspiring to full time global player was complete when Mixmag touted him as 'one to watch' 'in their 'Hot 6' feature. For the next Balance Selections podcast the Berlin-based DJ has crafted an immersive tech-house workout which rolls and rumbles in all the right spots. 'I wanted to build a journey out of old and new, but timeless tunes', Satie explains, and with tracks from acts like Reboot, Radio Slave, Photek and even Human League included in the mix, we think that he has achieved that quite expertly...
