Medicine 8 are back. The project of brothers Liam and Luke May started around 30 years ago in their South London stomping ground. Their sound, which blended electro and acid house with rock sensibilities, saw the pair release a healthy string of records all the way through to the late noughties, along with a handful of remixes for the likes of Orbital, Manic Street Preachers, Nirvana and pop royalty Kylie Minogue. Medicine 8 has been lying dormant over the last decade but Liam and Luke have been keeping themselves busy in the interim. As well as running Trashmouth Records - the label responsible for bringing you Fat White Family, MEATRAFFLE and Warmduscher - the pair have been keeping the hardware dream alive with Decius, the sleazy acid house outfit they founded alongside Paranoid London's Quinn Whalley and Lias Saudi, long running label mate and frontman of the Fat Whites. In April the duo marked their first new music since 2016 with a remix of May Lavie's ‘The Poem' for our R$N sub-label Human Endeavour. The request from label boss Rosie Ama has now jerked the project back into action and, since the release of the remix, the pair have got back in the studio under the moniker and are now giving Decius tracks a Medicine 8 make over. Looks like this won't be the last we'll be seeing of the project… To celebrate this triumphant return, boy have we got a treat for you. Luke and Liam have kindly put together a two-hour long 100% Medicine 8 production mix, packed with tracks from the archive, unreleased music, banging remixes and new releases...
In this episode of the XS Noize Podcast, Mark Millar chats with Saint Leonard—the visionary artist formerly known as Kieran Leonard—about the extraordinary journey that led to his third and most ambitious album, The Golden Hour. From recording his debut, Good Luck Everybody, at Stanley Kubrick's historic home to headlining sold-out shows at London's The Windmill and Third Man Records and supporting The Libertines on tour, Saint Leonard has built a reputation for fearless reinvention. In this fascinating conversation, Leonard shares the wild and deeply personal story behind The Golden Hour—an album shaped by Wild nights in Berlin's underbelly, Spiritual awakenings in India, Isolation in a GDR-era apartment during the pandemic, and Collaborations with Brian Eno and members of Fat White Family. Recorded at the legendary Hansa Studios in Berlin and Paul Epworth's Church Studios in London, The Golden Hour blends electronic textures, techno pulses, and Weimar cabaret flair—all woven together with Leonard's surreal storytelling and dark wit. Highlights include: Meeting Fat White Family by chance in Berlin and forming a band overnight Collaborating with Brian Eno and how it reshaped his sonic vision Wrestling with identity, paranoia, and rebirth during lockdown Using music to capture the absurdity of existence—with a wink The Golden Hour is not just an album—it's a full-blown experience: cinematic, unhinged, and unforgettable. Clive Langer in conversation with David Eastaugh https://newclang.bandcamp.com/album/new-clang Best known as one of the UK's most successful record producers with a string of high-profile credits in his portfolio, CLIVE LANGER returns in the new year with a second album from his band project, THE CLANG GROUP.A belated follow-up to 2016's Practice, the Group's maiden outing for Domino Records, New Clang was recorded with Deaf School co-conspirators John Wood (aka Max Ripple) and Gregg Braden, along with former Klaxons bassist Jamie Reynolds. Written and recorded in the aftermath of Clive's 70th birthday, New Clang is adeeply personal but incredibly vibrant album; catching Clive in reflective mode, the songs address the process of ageing and the state of the world,as well as confronting his own addiction to alcohol.“ After the pandemic, the dust settled, it felt like it was time, a new time, to play again,” he explains. “Not to revisit but to write and rehearse with my Clang Group mates. We were missing a bass player and fortuitously I met Jamie Reynolds and he filled the vacancy. The songs started to flow, we were back in the groove!”“The new album is the first sober songwriting I think I've done in almost 50 years,” he adds. “I've known and accepted that I was an addict for decades... I just didn't do anything about it. I thought I could live with it, I still enjoyed it. Someone once asked me ‘What do you do?' I replied ‘I drink'. Anyway, making an album sober was like making an album drunk except I wassober!!” Packaged in spare black-on-white, suggesting a tabula rasaof sorts, New Clang's distinctive sleeve artis the work of British artist Edwin Burdis, whom Clive met during his time with Domino Records. “Clive asked me to a studio in London to listen to his new album, still a work in progress,” recalls Edwin. “I was struck by the contrast between the upbeat music and its underlying melancholy, evoking clowns and cartoon characters and a nostalgia for London's recent past. At the time, I had been drawing simple cartoon motifs that aligned perfectly with Clive's songs. I wanted the campaign to be cohesive—black-and-white graphics that blend humour with a sense of tragedy and sadness.” A founder member of pioneering Liverpool art-rockers Deaf School, Langer is noted for a string of production credits (usually in collaboration with Alan Winstanley) on hits forthe likes of Dexys Midnight Runners (the no.1 single and album ‘Come On Eileen' and Too-Rye-Ay)andDavid Bowie(‘Absolute Beginners') plus numerous landmark releasesfor Elvis Costello, Madness, Morrissey, The Teardrop Explodes, China Crisis, Bush, They Might Be Giants, The Rockingbirds and, more recently, Fat White Family.
What happens when a rock and roller decides to venture into clubland? Singer, songwriter and author Lias Saoudi, the charismatic frontman of the Fat White Family, joined me initially to explore this question. Lending his seductive, slinky and sleezy tonsils to techno supergroup, Decius: their second album "Decius Volume 2: Splendor and Obedience,” absolutely pumps and you can see why they were picked to play at Berghain's 19th Birthday. The Fat White Family have a rep. As Lias says in our conversation, they were a band made up of some of the five worst people in England, yet I found him to be a charming, erudite gent. From the psychological chaos of band dynamics to the romanticized notion of the tortured artist, our conversation touches on the existential struggles of maintaining artistic integrity. Lias offers a raw and honest perspective on balancing creative freedom with the pressures of performance, sharing humorous anecdotes about societal expectations and generational quirks along the way.If you like the show and you havn‘t already, please give it a subscribe and consider leaving a rating and a review on Apple, Spotify, Amazon or wherever you listen. Back on the allotment today with Lias Saoudi, best known as the frontman of the heavily mythologised South London band Fat White Family. For the uninitiated, FWF are a controversial band born out of a Peckham squat in 2011: they became known initially for their riotous, electric live shows, as well as their unapologetic attitudes - depending on who you talk to, FWF are post punk heroes or “horrible little scrotes”. Now in 2024, the band sit at an interesting juncture, with a new album out but with certain members absent, decades of excessive drug use having taken their toll. During today's episode Lias talks about his experience of growing up in Cookstown Northern Ireland and troubling family ties, as well as new found health and semi-sobriety. Flo and Lias's mutual disdain for musician-turned-cheese magnate, Alex James also comes up, as they successfully plant out butternut squash, which it turns out is Lias' least favourite vegetable. Lias Saoudi växte upp på Nordirland med brittisk mor och algerisk far. Han är sångare i Fat White Family som sedan starten 2011 blivit kända för sin anarkistiska dekadens och sitt bångstyriga sound. Kritiker har skrivit att de inte är ett rockband med drogproblem utan ett drogband med rockproblem. I våras kom gruppens fjärde album "Forgiveness is yours" vars inspelning Lias Saoudi beskriver som "a fucking marathon of weirdness, dysfunction and interpersonal mess". Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

In 2010, Justin Maurer's band CLOROX GIRLS fell apart and he found himself living in his uncle's attic and working as a dental supply salesman in Long Beach, California. He was inspired after seeing James Carman's band IMAGES play a killer set at notorious longshoreman dive Harold's Place in San Pedro. Harold's bartenders were known to deal trucker speed from behind the bar as well as brandish a sawed off shotgun if any of their patrons got out of line. Being the diviest of Pacific Avenue's drag of working class dive bars, they allowed locals to throw their own punk shows. Justin made the pilgrimage across the Vincent Thomas Bridge to check out one of these shows and was blown away by IMAGES, a local band who took equal inspiration from late 70s LA punk as well as poppier UK punk like THE BUZZCOCKS. The vocal harmonies were great and a particular lefty drummer who played his snare and floortom with his arms crossed - one James Carman - was singing lead vocals and backing vocals and harmonies in a way that caught Justin pleasantly off guard. A few weeks later Justin bought a round of $1 beers for the IMAGES boys at Fern's, one of Long Beach's diviest on East 4th Street, but before taking their first sip they were chucked out by the doorman because every single member of IMAGES was all under 21. Justin soon produced a music video for the boys (“Frustration”, directed by Vim Crony), and also asked James if he would be up for joining a new band. Back in Long Beach, Justin and another new friend Cezar Mora, who had played in local bands THE SWITCHUPS and THE BAD MACHINE, were working on a project called LOS LONG BEACH BOYS, a Beach Boys cover band that sung in Spanish. They hoped to rake in the big bucks at swap meets and lowrider car shows. Translating and harmonizing an entire Beach Boys set in Spanish proved to be quite the challenge, and Justin and Cezar decided to write originals instead. James invited his childhood friend Johnny Reyes to audition on bass at LA DRUGZ' first band practice at his parents' house in Carson. The guys liked his yellow BUZZCOCKS t-shirt, his sense of humor and his mod hairstyle, so he was in. They celebrated with homemade pancit and lumpia from James' mom. At practice, James mentioned that the best music was like a drug and the name LA DRUGS was pitched. They looked it up and it seemed there was already a band called LA DRUGS from Boston. And they sucked. The boys decided to differentiate themselves by spelling it with a Z as an homage to THE PLUGZ. LA DRUGZ began to gig around the South Bay, Orange County and Los Angeles playing spots like The Redwood, The Continental Room, Harold's, The Observatory, Alex's Bar and Vince Lombardi High School (VLHS). They recorded the OUTSIDE PLACE EP with Kid Kevin of CALIMUCHO in San Pedro and approached Tim and Mark Janchar at HOVERCRAFT RECORDS in Portland, Oregon about releasing it. The brothers dug it and said yes! A westcoast tour was promptly arranged around the release of the record and would take the boys north to Sacramento, Oakland, San Francisco, Portland and Seattle. In Seattle, Kurt Bloch of THE FASTBACKS joined them onstage for a raucous cover of “You're Gonna Miss Me” by 13th Floor Elevators. The following year of 2015 took the boys out on the road with London's FAT WHITE FAMILY where they kicked off at storied L.A. Venue The Troubadour, and toured all the way out to Austin, Texas. After ripping it up at the final show of their tour at The Chapel in San Francisco, both bands' vans were broken into at the Travel Lodge Motel on Market Street and Valencia where over $20K of gear was stolen along with both bands' suitcases of clothing. FAT WHITE FAMILY flew back to the UK all wearing LA DRUGZ t-shirts which was the only clean item of clothing each member now owned. The ALL BURNED DOWN EP was the followup and all things were quiet on the western front UNTIL NOW. James Carman formed THE REFLECTORS,

The inspiration for this week's mixtape is down to correspondence with John Matthews, a person whose musical knowledge and taste I trust more than most. The inclusion of Fat White Family remixed by Arab Acid? That was John. Also while listening to the Face Radio this week- on The London Hippy I heard Barcelona duo Magik Brother & Mystic Sister, and on The Free Design a song by Chapterhouse - and they sounded so great, I was inspired to play different tracks by these bands. As spring turns to summer and the flowers bloom, it's a mixtape full of dream pop, shoegaze and psychedelic folk, sounds to drift away in a field of flowers. Lias Saoudi is the frontman for British indie rock band Fat White Family. The band made a name for itself with their deliberately confrontational approach and sound, and insanely energetic and unhinged live performances. They debuted in 2013 with 'Champagne Holocaust', soon to be followed up by 'Songs For Our Mothers' (2016). Their third record 'Serfs Up!' marked their biggest commercial success to date. We spoke with Lias about their latest offering, 'Forgiveness is Yours' (2024), a sense of home, his writing style, the band still being around, interpersonal problems, and a lot more! On how to respond to conformity. Lias Saoudi, frontman of the British band Fat White Family, joins us to talk about rock, popular culture and contemporary unfreedom. We discuss: Why are the kids taking less drugs? Can we respond to our nihilistic times with nihilistic art? What is the nature of conformity today? How to challenge conformity without sneering at the masses? Is there a romantic revival going on? Why is Lias interested in Ivan Illich? durée : 00:05:52 - Dans la playlist de France Inter - Fat White Family... Le moins qu'on puisse dire est que le groupe de rock anglais revient de loin. Dix années en mode tout à fond, avec les hauts et les bas inhérents au succès, les festivals, un dernier album datant de 2019. Hiver 2023, Fat White Family dévoile "Religion for one".
Structures "Mod3rn" Structures "Sometimes feat. Rebecca Baby (Lulu Von Trapp)" Björk "Enjoy" The Horrors "Mirror's Image" Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds "Up jumped the Devil" Structures "Strange Feeling" Ça part en fav' : Moise Keane ft. Junes UB "Tracks of the blue sky" Fat White Family "Religion For One"

Musician Lias Saoudi discusses with Ivan six things which should be better known. Lias Kaci Saoudi is a writer, artist and musician, and the front man of genre-bending iconoclasts Fat White Family. Born to a British mother and Algerian father, he grew up in the Republic of Ireland, Scotland and Northern Ireland, before moving to London and gaining a Fine Art degree from Slade School of Art. During the first UK lockdown, Lias began contributing a series of unflinching autobiographical pieces entitled Life Beyond the Neutral Zone to the online cultural hub, The Social Gathering. He is published in The New Frontier: Reflections From the Irish Border (New Island Books, 2021) - an anthology of new writing from some of Ireland's greatest contemporary authors marking the centenary of partition. He is also the debut guest editor of Ambit Pop, a new annual issue of the venerable quarterly arts magazine. His first book, Ten Thousand Apologies: Fat White Family and the Miracle of Failure, co-written with Adelle Stripe (Black Teeth and a Brilliant Smile, Bloomsbury, 2019), is described by Miranda Sawyer in The Observer as “the story of a band that's always on the brink: of stardom, of madness, of brilliance, of disgrace”.
