rWotD Episode 2833: Discworld Diary Welcome to Random Wiki of the Day, your journey through Wikipedia’s vast and varied content, one random article at a time. The random article for Tuesday, 4 February 2025 is Discworld Diary. The Discworld Diaries are a series of themed diaries based on the Discworld novels by Terry Pratchett. Each one (except the 2008 diary) is based on an Ankh-Morpork institution, and has an opening section containing information about that institution written by Pratchett and Stephen Briggs. The diaries feature a great deal of background information, far more than could reasonably be put into the novels. However, some of this occasionally finds its way into the series proper - the concept of female assassins, the introduction of Black Widow House, and the characters of Miss Alice Band and Mme les Deux-Épées were notable ideas that first appeared in the Assassins' Guild Yearbook, and later in the Discworld short story "Minutes of the Meeting to Form the Proposed Ankh-Morpork Federation of Scouts" in A Blink of the Screen, to then becoming characters and a playable Assassins' Guild House in Discworld MUD.The early diaries are illustrated by Paul Kidby. Those for 2015 and 2016 were by Pratchett aided and abetted by the Discworld Emporium, with additional illustrations by Peter DennisThe diaries are:Discworld's Unseen University Diary 1998 (1997); the cover art features the character Death, possibly the character who appeared in the greatest number of Discworld novels.Discworld's Ankh-Morpork City Watch Diary 1999 (1998); the cover art features the character Commander Samuel Vimes of the Watch, His Grace the Duke of Ankh, in his beloved street uniform, in other words, battered Watchman armor.Discworld Assassins' Guild Yearbook and Diary 2000 (1999); the cover art features the character Lord Downey, the Assassins' Guild leader, with his specialty peppermint (rumored poisoned).Discworld Fools' Guild Yearbook and Diary 2001 (2000); the cover art features Dr Whiteface, the Fools' Guild leader, bursting through a paper hoop.Discworld Thieves' Guild Yearbook and Diary 2002 (2001); the cover art features a "photofit" of Mr Boggis, the Thieves' Guild leader.Discworld (Reformed) Vampyre's Diary 2003 (2002); the cover art features Mr John Not-A-Vampire-At-All Smith, head of the Ankh-Morpork Mission of the Black Ribboners with a cup of steaming brown liquid, likely coffee or hot cocoa.Ankh-Morpork Post Office Handbook Diary 2007 (2006); the cover art features Moist von Lipwig, the Postmaster of the Ankh-Morpork Post Office, wearing his token golden suit and wingèd hat, with Lipwigzers on either side of him.Lu Tze's Yearbook of Enlightenment 2008 (2007); the cover art features Lu-Tze in the lotus position, with his broom in front of him, against a square with the phrase "It won't get better if you pick it" (from the Way of Mrs Cosmopolite).2015 Discworld Diary. First & Last Aid. We R Igors (2014); cover art features Igor.2016 Discworld Diary: A Practical Manual for the Modern Witch (2015); the cover art depicts Nanny Ogg and Granny Weatherwax drawn by Peter DennisThe Terry Pratchett Diary. Fast forward to today, Mark and Amy Anderson, founders of Anderson Technologies and Anderson Archival, are passing down a much larger legacy: a thriving multi-generational business. Their story, filled with grit, humility, and purpose, offers profound insights for business owners planning the delicate handoff from one generation to the next. The Power of Multi-Generational BusinessThe Founding Story: Building with PurposeGrowing a Family While Growing a BusinessInviting the Next Generation: Creating Opportunity Without PressureThe Transition Process: Planning for SuccessThe Role of Legacy and Long-Term VisionA Roadmap for Multi-Generational SuccessBook A Strategy Call The Power of Multi-Generational Business Transitioning a business from one generation to the next is not merely a transaction; it's a journey. It's about more than dollars, contracts, or even systems. It's about preserving passion, fostering innovation, and creating a legacy that spans decades. As Mark and Amy shared on The Money Advantage Podcast, their experience highlights key strategies for navigating this process with intention and grace. Whether you're the founding generation or preparing to take the reins, this article will guide you through the pivotal moments of transitioning a family business. By the end, you'll feel inspired and equipped to foster generational success while ensuring your business thrives in capable hands. The Founding Story: Building with Purpose For Mark and Amy, entrepreneurship began with a shared passion for problem-solving and a knack for technology. Starting Anderson Technologies in 1995, they combined their unique strengths—Mark's entrepreneurial mindset and Amy's technical expertise. From humble beginnings in their home office, they built a business focused on serving others, whether managing IT systems or preserving priceless family archives. Their story reminds us that successful businesses start with a commitment to solving real problems and serving people, a foundation crucial for enduring success. As Amy aptly said, "Small business is the backbone of America." And with that ethos, they instilled purpose and pride into their work from day one. Growing a Family While Growing a Business Starting a family while running a business added complexity—but also clarity. For the Andersons, family always came first. They transitioned to a separate office space, carefully balancing the demands of entrepreneurship with parenting. A pivotal decision was fostering their children's understanding of the business without pressuring them into it. “We didn't want the business to ruin our kids' lives,” Amy reflected. Instead, they modeled hard work, character, and the joy of serving others through their work—values that naturally attracted their children to consider joining the business. Their story shows that the early years of business ownership aren't just about building systems; they're about building values that can be passed on to the next generation. Inviting the Next Generation: Creating Opportunity Without Pressure For years, Mark and Amy assumed they would sell their business. That changed when their daughter Hadley and son-in-law Corbett surprised them with a question: “Would you ever consider letting us join the business?” Rather than offering immediate ownership or privileges, the Andersons maintained a structured approach. Hadley and Corbett applied for roles within the company anonymously, undergoing the same rigorous hiring process as any other candidates. This ensured respect from the existing team and set the stage for them to earn their positions through merit. This careful balance—providing opportunity without entitlement—is a model for any family business.

That's the purpose of the book. Then once they learn it, you need to support them. And that's done with the weekly podcast. Now everything is coming together. And in this podcast John reveals that the company that hosts our podcast tells us that we have 36 people listen to our podcast each week. John and Kelly talk about how cool it is to have this as our SECRET CLUB. Because we never promoted the podcast. Then John and Kelly get into the topic for the day. The search for a success formula. Kelly talks about her journey. Then John talks about his journey. Throughout his 30s and 40s he was always looking for that one thing that if you did it consistently would assure success. By 50 he decided such a success formula didn't exist. Then he discovers that it did exist in the most likely place. The top book the world on success. But it wasn't clearly stated in the book. It was buried deep inside the book. John had to figure out the secret. Then during the podcast John compares other so-called success formulas. Like the hugely successful morning miracle that encompasses six things and takes one hour to do. Also the comparison to meditation. And finally John talks about the comparison to Kelly. Who is great at meeting people where they are. But John says that's not him. He finds it very hard to do. It's like Kelly is the good cop and John is the bad cop. John influences people by being blunt and shaking them up.About the Hosts:John MitchellJohn's story is pretty amazing. After spending 20 years as an entrepreneur, John was 50 years old but wasn't as successful as he thought he should be. To rectify that, he decided to find the “top book in the world” on SUCCESS and apply that book literally Word for Word to his life. That Book is Think & Grow Rich. The book says there's a SECRET for success, but the author only gives you half the secret. John figured out the full secret and a 12 minute a day technique to apply it.When John applied his 12 minute a day technique to his life, he saw his yearly income go to over $5 million a year, after 20 years of $200k - 300k per year. The 25 times increase happened because John LEVERAGED himself by applying science to his life. His daily technique works because it focuses you ONLY on what moves the needle, triples your discipline, and consistently generates new business ideas every week. This happens because of 3 key aspects of the leveraging process.John's technique was profiled on the cover of Time Magazine. He teaches it at the University of Texas' McCombs School of Business, which is one the TOP 5 business schools in the country. Amy Anderson is a Pilates Instructor, Certified Dance Medicine Specialist, founder and owner of Engage Movement Arts, and former professional ballet dancer, whose career took a dramatic turn when a devastating back injury left her unable to dance for two years. She was just 27 years old and at the peak of her career when she was told that her injury was career ending and that she would never be able to dance again.        Not only did Amy dance again, but she also created a 30 year-long career working in private practice rehabilitating injuries for both dancers and the general public, while also maintaining a professional dance career part time. She is currently working with clients, teaching adult ballet classes, and creating new works to share with the world.      Amy shares how she fell in love with ballet when she was just 3 years old after watching a performance of Swan Lake on PBS. From that moment on, she knew that she wanted to be a professional ballet dancer, starting her training when she was 9 years old. Her dream eventually came true when she was hired by a large professional ballet company in the Pacific Northwest.    Unfortunately, although Amy achieved her life's dream, the pressure of dancing in such a large company was overwhelming. She felt like she was nothing more than a body in a costume instead of an artist. Not only did she feel like she was losing her identity, the obsessive, irrational, and constant focus on weight made her begin to worry about developing an eating disorder. She chose her health over her career, quit dancing, and walked away from her dream.        Eventually, she came back to ballet, secured a position in a smaller local company with a supportive, nurturing atmosphere and no pressure. Until she was injured.     Amy shares many of the important life lessons and insights she gained from her injury and her subsequent journey of healing, which also led her to discover a new career path while also finding her path back to dance. She also shares the importance of listening to your body, finding the right path to healing that works for you, and how to pay attention to the signals that your body is sending you.   She also shares how (and why) she has embraced the power of aging well, and firmly believes that all of us can do anything we want to, at any age, and that there is always a path to healing.   Download this positive, inspirational, and engaging episode to hear Amy's story, how to age well, dance for joy, and discover our own power to heal.   https://www.engagemovementarts.com/ https://www.linkedin.com/in/amy-anderson-56670918/ https://voyagedenver.com/interview/exploring-life-business-amy-anderson-engage-movement-arts/ https://www.denverdancecenter.com/
