Politics. The science and art of convincing others to do what you want them to. For many, it's a dirty word, a thing to be avoided. But if you want to save the life of a child, if you want to change the nature of a village, if you want to tear through fate itself, it is a skill one must master. But even more important than mastering the skill is knowing who to use the skill on. To save Satoko, Keiichi must convince the head of the village herself to change her mind... This week on Backlog Dialogues, we bring the greatest challenge to its end.

In het progressieve denken zijn we nog niet radicaal genoeg. The all cast review sessions are starting to get silly, as the discussions about what's going on gives way to silliness and the promise of a new protagonist going forward! Thank goodness, it was almost getting to be too unbearable to be Keiichi anymore. Then, John gushes over his favorite manga adaptation and unleashes an incredible amount of rage upon the hack job the anime does with this material. And as always, a special gift awaits those who have seen to the end of the story....
Keiichi tells us in great detail how smart he is as he plans the perfect murder. His descent to being a creature of the night progresses, and he begins to cross paths with other demons... Bang Bang Keiichi's silver hammer came down upon his head Bang Bang Keiichi's silver hammer made sure that he was dead...
The extent of Satoko's situation is laid bare: her abusive uncle has returned, and the club is powerless to do anything. But that's not going to keep Keiichi from trying, as he shouts at his friends, begins to make terrible kidnapping plans, talks to Miyo about her interests, implies that his friend is behind all the murders in the village, and shows us just how far out his galaxy brain can go.
Rena gets philosophical and Ooishi gets terrifying this week, as Keiichi learns more about his new 'sister', Satoko. Things are starting to get gloomy faster this time, as Satoko fails to come to school and the question of Satoshi is way more forward, with Shion pushing Keiichi on what he's learned about the missing boy.
It's Satoko's turn in the spotlight as we go back and start over to have a good old fashioned lunch box battle! Keiichi begins to develop brotherly feelings for the precocious brat (affectionate), and his skill for bullshit hinted at in the previous arc is now given a name in one of the most hilarious (and horrifying) scenes we've ever done on this pod! Listener discretion advised, we do not condone any of the words that weird pervert says.
Things aren't looking good. Satoko and Rika are missing, and Keiichi may have been spilling his guts to the wrong Sonozaki sister this whole time. It's a good thing Rena is an ace detective, or this case would never have been cracked. It's time once more for things to come to a tragic end...
Keiichi has a rough one, as everyone wants to know if he saw some people that he definitely does not want them to know he saw. Rena's acting smart, Mion's acting strange, and Rika is talking about cats. Oh, and people are starting to disappear, that's big too. Make sure to practice proper ladder saftey, Keiichi!
The titular festival is back, and with it our spooky lady friend, Takano Miyo! Shion drags Keiichi in to hearing all about Miyo's many hobbies, and ends up dragging him in to a shed full of crazy torture devices! Shilling vendor trash and more romcom antics round out this section of the story.
Keiichi's relationship with 'Shion' deepens, and we unfortunately have to spend even more time in Angel Mort. Rena teaches Keiichi valuable lessons on not judging people based on how they initially seem (and also just stop being such a sexist dick). And finally, we answer once and for all the burning question: Are Twins Real?
Things are suspiciously back to normal in Hinamizawa, as Keiichi, Mion, and Rena are all alive and well, and the business of the day is club activites! A board game competition, Sympathy, and Curry are all on the menu, but more importantly, why the heck is Mion a server at a skeevy family diner, and why is she insisting that twins are real?
It's time for an out-of-character after party! The cast discuss what happened in the story, and WE discuss the anime and manga adaptations of Onikakushi! What will happen next now that Keiichi, Rena, and Mion are all dead? Heck, what CAN happen next? (For those who have seen all there is to see in When They Cry, there is an additional after party after the credits. If you are unbound from time, join your fellow monsters, won't you?)
We flap back into the world of Ah! My Goddess with season 2! Let's find out what Keiichi and the Auto Club fellas are up to. If your name is Peorth, you have a dumb name. Sorry, that's just the facts.
Keiichi's story comes to a bloody and abrupt end. All around him are friends he can no longer see as friends. The hidden secrets of the village are coming for him, even as he gropes blindly for the truth. In the fight to protect himself, he pushes away everyone who he cared for, and picks up a bat. The stage is set. The tragedy is real. The truth is hidden. It will all end... when the higurashi cry.
Things start to get creepy in Hinamizawa. Keiichi finds himself being interrogated by shady cops and his friends start acting... strangely. Are the legends about demoning away real? Is Keiichi next? Also, will he ever get out of one of the most severe cases of denial you'll ever see?
It's time for more club activity shenanigans! The Five Demon Fire Fight will soon take place at the annual summer festival in Hinamizawa! Keiichi gets to show off his skills and succumbs to hubris almost immediately! After that, he learns more dark secrets about this quaint mountain village, but will he regret learning them? Do you really need to ask? Also, John makes a very fun (annoying?) discovery: the podcast recording platform the team uses has a soundboard!
The story begins! We meet Keiichi and his classmates, Rena, Mion, Satoko, and Rika, and get familiar with their totally normal lives in a mountain village where nothing bad ever happens. Except, you know, the grisly murder at the dam construction site a few years ago. But that doesn't matter, what matters is BOARD GAMES!

Keiichi Matsuda is one of the deepest thinkers in the field of XR. He is trained as an architect, and he's currently the director of Liquid City, a small design studio based in London that is engaged developing cutting-edge AR applications and creating speculative design film and written essays that give us a sneak peak at the future of immersive and spatial computing technologies. Matsuda created one of the most influence cautionary tales of augmented reality called HYPER-REALITY in 2016, which I did a deep dive with him back in 2018 in episode #639. He's currently working with Niantic on some more speculative film essays, which should be launching soon. Matsuda was at AWE 2023 showing off a couple of recent projects including an AI agent named Wol in collaboration with Niantic's 8th Wall, that has the intention to explore the idea of personalized education. He was also showing off his really cool AR game called Overbeast, which is a highly-original and unique social AR game that combines farming with giant boss battles of AR beasts that fill the entire sky. We had a chance to unpack all of his latest projects, and do a deep dive into how they used inworld.ai to create Wol that has mix of magical glue of large language model technology that keeps interactions novel, fresh, but also bounded by the customized set of knowledge that you enter. I'll be diving in a bit deeper into inworld.ai in the next episode. Also be sure to check out Matsuda's provocative essay on KamiOS that's uses pagan animism as a metaphor to describe how AI + XR will be infusing our lives. "KamiOS channels the spirit world using AR. When you put on your headset, you will be introduced to many different gods who will guide you through your virtual and physical life. Gods of navigation, communication, commerce. Gods who teach you, gods who learn from you. Gods who make their home in particular objects or places, and gods who accompany you on your journey." This week, Sara and Runa podcast in the normal way, theorize in the normal way, cry about Rena in the normal way, and hop into a rollercoaster with no safety harness in the normal way! Higurashi: Tsumihoroboshi brings us back to Hinamizawa yet again as we see the world through alternative perspectives, sometimes following Keiichi and at other points, following Rena. When we can finally see the world as Rena does, will we understand the meaning behind her belief in Oyashiro-sama?Higurashi no naku koro ni: Tsumihoroboshi (2005) leads us through an entirely new scenario - unlike the Meakashi chapter which showed us the events of Watanagashi but through Shion's perspective, we've never seen the events that of Tsumihoroboshi before. This time, we see Rena struggle to adjust after her father begins dating a new woman, Rina Mamiya, and this only gets worse when Rena finds out that that Rina is also the girlfriend of a known con artist, extortionist, and scammer - Teppei Houjou. This relatively mundane misfortune eventually leads to two murders, a dramatic confrontation within the village dump, conspiracies about parasitic aliens and clones, and a plot to blow up the school. In the midst of all of this, Keiichi suddenly remembers a moment when Mion and Rena brought him Ohagi... during the Onikakushi chapter. What good will that memory do for him though, now that Rena is drifting further and further toward a tragic end?As always, if you like the show please leave us a review! This week, Sara and Runa look through the eyes of Shion Sonozaki in the first game of the Answer arcs, Higurashi: Meakashi. The Spring of 1982 arrives and brings with it a daring escape from Catholic School, covert grocery trips through town, and the glimmer of a gremlin's first love. In this volume we'll also finally see exactly what happened to Shion, Mion, Keiichi, and the others during the Watanagashi chapter - do we learn all the facts of the incident, though, or do we simply learn which questions we should really be asking?Higurashi no naku koro ni: Meakashi (2004) follows Shion's perspective through events roughly the same as those in the Watanagashi chapter, revealing her innermost thoughts, her suspicions, and her actions in both 1982 and 1983. After escaping from an extremely rigid catholic boarding school, Shion hides out in a Sonozaki owned apartment building with the help of her driver Kasai. At first she only intends to lay low and, with Mion's help, pose as Mion to work part time for money to support herself for a while... but then she meets Satoshi, a kind and clumsy boy who catches Shion completely off guard. If only their lives had been peaceful. If only their families had been gentle. If only Hinamizawa and its history didn't loom so ominously in Shion's mind...With all the new information in the Meakashi chapter, we can outline Shion's actions with certainty and clearly map out the mysterious events of the Watanagashi chapter. This week, Sara and Runa travel to an unknown realm... 1978. More specifically, Hinamizawa in 1978 where we no longer see Keiichi as the protagonist but a new, freshly minted police investigator: Mamoru Akasaka. We've been entrusted with all of the information we might need to be able to understand Hinamizawa's mysteries, but this volume also throws a wrench in a lot of possible theories as well! Is Rika stuck in a groundhog day style time loop? Is her death in 1983 and the resulting Great Hinamizawa Disaster truly unavoidable? Just how much money has Ooishi skimmed off of discretionary funds over the years and then lost betting on Mahjong?Higurashi no naku koro ni, Chapter 4: Himatsubushi (2003) transports us further back than we've ever been, to a time before the dam foreman was murdered and before the stirrings of Oyashiro-sama's curse took hold in Hinamizawa. As the protests against the dam reach a fevered pitch, the grandson of the Minister of Construction is kidnapped a Public Safety Police Officer, Mamoru Akasaka, is dispatched to Hinamizawa to investigate and, if possible, recover the kidnapped child safely. We already know from the first three volumes of Higurashi that he succeeds in saving the minister's grandson, but what else happened there when he was in Hinamizawa? Why is he still haunted by that case even years later? Is it possible to save someone in the past simply by learning The Truth of an incident? As Akasaka investigates, Rika's firm declarations cast all the facts of the case into disarray and leave us all scrambling for answers...As always, if you like the show please leave us a review! Sara and Runa once again continue their time in Hinamizawa, enjoying the peaceful days shared by Keiichi and his friends in Higurashi no naku koro ni, chapter 3: Tatarigoroshi (2003). Once again we return to the late spring of 1983 with everyone alive, at least for the moment, for round three of our attempt at uncovering Hinamizawa's mysteries! Now, with the information we've gathered from the first two episode, we can start to answer some of the Big Questions: Why does Tomitake keep dying the same way every episode? Is Oyashiro-sama's curse real? Can you win a baseball game when all your brought with you was a golf club? The Tatarigoroshi chapter follows Satoko closely and spends a lot of time developing the warm, surrogate sibling sort of relationship between her and Keiichi. As Keiichi learns more about the painful circumstances of Satoko's life, he becomes more and more determined to protect this small gremlin who he cares for as a younger sister. Even if that means sometimes he has to face the torment of slandering the noble institution of Curry in front of Chie-sensei. Even if it means letting Satoko tease him and set up traps that catch him off guard. Even if it means plotting the perfect murder to erase Satoko's uncle from existence. This week, Sara and Runa continue spending peaceful days in Hinamizawa, discussing Higurashi no naku koro ni, Chapter 2: Watanagashi (2002). We pick right up where we left off in our last episode which of course means that everything is back to normal and we're back to just before the Summer of 1983 in Hinamizawa! This time we dig deep into the history of Hinamizawa's main families, the question of Who Was Phone, and the vital question of where I can get some soy sauce at like 9pm after the stores have all closed. In the Watanagashi chapter, we see a different version of the Summer of 1983, one in which Keiichi sticks much more closely to his friends and rather than suspecting them of being involved in a criminal conspiracy or divine curse, he trusts them with all his heart. Unfortunately, Keiichi is still just a teenager and a tremendous Fool, so things once again go very badly for him. He inadvertently hurts Mion early on and then meets Mion's twin sister, Shion, who he strongly suspects is... literally just Mion with her hair down. For a while he isn't really sure what to make of "Shion" and her sudden appearances and he's convinced that this is just Mion taking on the role of an Imaginary twin sister to do things that she wouldn't otherwise be able to do, but... is that really the case, Keiichi? As always, if you like the show please leave us a review! This week, Sara and Runa embark on a long trip to Hinamizawa and discuss Higurashi no naku koro ni, Chapter 1: Onikakushi (2002). In this first episode of our full dive into all 8 volumes of Higurashi, we talk about the harrowing stakes of afterschool card games, the existential significance of Air Conditioning, and the startling correlation between holding a metal bat and having a Real Bad Time.Higurashi no naku koro ni is a lengthy story spread out over 8 Kinetic Novels and we'll be covering each game in its own episode over the next few months. Higurashi was originally released in 2002 but didn't receive an official worldwide release in 2009, and now thankfully it's not too difficult to buy an official release of all 8 volumes in English (and a lot of other languages too). It's part of the When They Cry series by 07th Expansion and creator Ryukishi07, and we'll be covering Umineko further in the future.Higurashi chapter 1: Onikakushi follows the story of Keiichi Maebara, a teenage boy whose family has just moved into the relatively rural Japanese town of Hinamizawa and quickly settles into a delightful daily routine alongside his new friends, Rena, Mion, Rika, and Satoko. As he spends time with these girls playing board games and pranks, he learns that there may have been a grotesque murder in the town just a few years ago. When he asks his friends, however, they act as if nothing like that could have ever happened. After the photographer who first told Keiichi about the murder turns up dead, and under extremely suspicious circumstances, Keiichi begins to suspect that there may be something terrible about Hinamizawa. Has a curse been claiming the lives of residents and enemies of the town each year? Is there a town-wide conspiracy bent on silencing anyone who threatened the peace and order of Hinamizawa? Are the residents of this town really descended from demons? Keiichi digs deeper and deeper into the mystery surrounding his new home and as he does, his friends start to act more and more terrifying and things become more and more uncanny... Right? All of that really happens, right?Or, maybe...Content Warnings for this episode:Broadly, we talk about Death, Murder, Violence, and some unreality themes throughout.00:22:00: Mention of a Needle hidden in food00:23:55: Mention of Battery/Violence00:25:04: Needles/Syringes00:25:30: Mention of Battery/Violence00:40:18 to 00:40:58: Details of a murder including self-inflicted neck injury and fingernail trauma. 00:52:08 to 00:53:45: More mention of needles in food01:17:53 and 01:18:45: Finger/Hand injury01:44:45: Another mention of self-inflicted neck injury and fingernail trauma. 02:01:15 to 02:03:06: further discussion of self-inflicted neck injury and fingernail injury

Ah! My Goddess revolved around a young college student named Keiichi Morisato, whose luck always seemed to be on the downside, but his fortune quickly changes one fateful night when a seemingly normal phone call suddenly connects him to the goddess hotline. A beautiful blonde goddess named Belldandy comes bursting through his mirror, offering not only her charm and innocencebut also a single wish. Keiichi jokingly wishes for her to live with him forever, and, unfortunately, she's obligated to grant the wish. Now Belldandy and Keiichi are stuck with each other and thus the comedic and romantic antics commence! --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/wasasum/message

On this month's manga episode, Shea and Derek discuss two distinctly different titles. They begin with Batman: The Jiro Kuwata Batmanga (DC Comics). The second in this planned three-volume series, collecting all of Kuwata's Batman work, just came out last month, and the Two Guys look at both volumes one and two. These Batmanga stories were originally serialized in Japan between 1966 and 1967, at the height of the Adam West Batman craze, and both Derek and Shea comment on how much Kuwata's stories were informed by that TV series, as well as by the "New Look" of earlier in the decade. At the same time, this manga never comes across as intentionally campy or self-conscious of itself as a pop-cultural product. In fact, one of the guys' first topics of conversation is how much Kuwata's Batman takes from its American version and how much is unique and original to the manga. Surprisingly, there are relatively few American imports into the Batmanga stories -- Jim Gordon is prominent throughout, and both Alfred Pennyworth and Vicki Vale make brief appearances -- and the villains in Kuwata's stories are either street-level thugs or unique to the manga. Indeed, Derek comments on the weirdness of many of Batman's nemeses in these stories -- at least, more weirdly off-beat than those in the American version -- including Lord Death Man, the Human Ball, Professor Gorilla, the Hangman, and, one of his favorites, Go-Go the Magician. (Clayface is the focus of a chapter in the second volume, but it's a different Clayface from the American version.) These are definitely stories of their time, and the guys point out that Kuwata's Batmanga is perhaps best read as a rich cultural artifact. To fully appreciate Batman, you should understand the property's many historical contexts and manifestations. Next, the guys look at the the first volume in Dark Horse Comics' new Oh My Goddess! Omnibus series. Neither Shea nor Derek knew exactly what to expect with Kosuke Fujishima legendary title, except for the fact that it was a widely popular manga series. Derek expected something along the line of josei, and Shea thought that the title might be defined by several of the stereotypes many readers may have regarding manga. But both were pleasantly surprised, especially Derek, who appreciated the episodic, TV-sitcom-like nature of this seinen manga. In fact, as the guys point out, you can gain about everything you need to now about the series' premise in the book's first chapter, "The Number You Have Dailed Is Incorrect." From there, the remaining 22 chapters of this first omnibus follow suit, occasionally introducing new characters and situations that build upon the foundation laid down in the first. Shea is less impressed by Fujishima's meandering storylines, but Derek enjoys the casual, even charming, manner in which we get to know Keiichi, Belldandy, and the rest of the Oh My Goddess! cast. The reader's comfort and enjoyment levels develop as the series unfolds, and, as Shea points out, taking in a chapter of Oh My Goddess! is like eating a favorite food or returning to a reliable friend. However, for some (such as Shea) this is a title that might be best experienced on a regular serialized basis, and not consumed all at once in omnibus form. Regardless, both of the guys are glad that they've discovered Fujishima's recently completed series -- the final chapter was published in April 2014 -- and they'll probably return for the next omnibus volume that comes out late this year.

Manga review of Honey Hunt Volume 3 by Miki Aihara. Translated by Ari Yasuda. Adapted by Liz Forbes. Originally published in Japan by Shogakukan. Published in US by Viz Shojo Beat, $9.99, Rated T+ for Older Teen. Yura is still a bundle of nerves as she gets ready for the second script reading of the next "Noodle Girl" episode. Things get worse as she loses a contact lens, or so she thinks, but the loss might be the key to her regaining her confidence. Her lovelife gets more complicated as Q-Ta leaves for England for a month long recording session. Even if he had remained in Japan, Keiichi, Yura's manager, has forbidden him to have contact with Yura. This does allow an opening for the increasingly smitten Haruka to try to squirm into Yura's heart. He believes that if Yura sees him performing with his band, Knights, she will fall in love with him. But this is Haruka we're talking about, a dude that doesn't want to show that he's falling for her. Knowing that Yura wants to know more about Q-Ta, he dangles the carrot of telling her everything there is to know about his twin brother...IF she can get tickets to the Knights 3-evening engagement at the Tokyodome. Problem is, all three shows are sold out. A couple of reviews back I asked myself whether I would be able to continue reading this series. The reason I asked myself this was because I had a lot of hostility to Aihara's art. It just isn't that good. Yura is especially unappealing, looking like a giant lost fishhead most of the time. But in a little afterword at the end of this volume, Aihara insinuates that she purposefully designed Yura as "plain". Now things are making a bit more sense. Aihara is going to goad Yura to succeed even if she isn't a "classic" model level beauty. She's gonna have to get by with her spirit, determination, and inner spark. She not only has to win over the characters in the book, but also the reader! I for one really admire her as she has developed more and more of a backbone, starting with telling her parents to go to Hell on TV back in the first volume. She not only refuses to stand in the shadow of her famous parents (especially her mom), she wants to exceed them! That would be like Julian Lennon saying he's going to write better songs and sell more records than John Lennon. It takes a lot of courage to say something like that, much less do it. I really like this story. I'm still trying to figure out if Q-Ta likes Yura or is more in love with her dad. And is Haruka really falling for her or is he just trying to take something away from his bro? Excellent shojo. My Grade: A
Yep, I'm still catching up on Yen Plus. Basically, I will be breaking the review for each issue down into two parts: The Japanese first, and then the OEL and Korean section. Higurashi When They Cry, Chapter 5: "Isolation" Keiichi is becoming more and more paranoid. You would too if your sweet friends seem possessed at times by a demon and strange murders had occurred and someone put needles in your food! Keiichi's conflict lies in the fact that most of the time his best friends seem like the cute girls he has known for the past few months, but every once in a while, when he asks about the town secrets, their eyes change and they start talking with weird voices. He even starts carrying around a baseball bat for protection. I would say that Higurashi stands heads above all the titles in this magazine with its mix of moe and its never-ending sense of dread and suspense. I watched the first dvd of the anime version a while back so I know how this ends, but the weirdness and horror of the story still packs a powerful punch. I look forward to the undiscovered country beyond this first arc. My Grade: A Nabari No Ou, Chapter 5: "Attack" Raimei has led Miharu and company to her home village of Fuuma to consult with the ninja master Kotaru Fuuma, only to find it under attack. The Iga Grey Wolves are conducting a raid to steal Fuuma's "Forbidden Art Scroll", which they believe will aid them in capturing the Shinra Banshou. It seems to be their lucky day as that very person falls into their hands! On their side is a particularly dangerous individual named Yoite who appears to be able to cut his enemies in two just by pointing at them! I must admit that the earlier chapters of Nabari No Ou were a little too girlish for my taste, especially with Miharu being such an emo brooder with no apparent interest in his special status. But for chapter 5, my hat is off to Yuhki Kamatani, who lets loose a can of whoop ass in the action sequences of this chapter. The art was just incredible and her choice of angles right out of film just blew me away. It's not just that the artist didn't shy away from blood. It's her mastery of pace that captures your eye, pushing you through pages with insistence. Great work. My Grade: A+ Soul Eater, Chapter 2: "Remedial Lesson (part 2)" The two teams of Maka/Soul Eater and Black Star/Tsubaki have a dubious distinction in common. They were supposed to have claimed the souls of 99 humans and one witch. Their current soul count combined: ZERO! So they've been given a remedial mission which they must complete or face expulsion from the DWMA. They must take the soul of Dr. Franken Stein. Yes, that's right, get it? "DR. FRANKENSTEIN". Problem is he's very powerful, being the former partner of Shinigami-Sama's Death Scythe. Both sets of partners will have to attain a higher level of cooperation and skill if they hope to defeat the evil scientist. The early installments of this series left me at a complete loss. Atsushi Ohkubo kept on jumping from character to character each chapter and never really got a story going. I had no idea or context in which to place them so it was starting over with the plot over and over again. Starting last issue, he started bringing the cast together and laying down at least a semblance of a story arc. But the lack of a sensible plot is what makes this the weakest title in the Japanese half of Yen Plus. It does seem like the title is getting better. Good enough to buy the tankoban version, the first volume of which should be out as I write this? Not sure on that point. I'm probably gonna skip it for now. I will say this. Ohkubo's art is very unique and cool, with its absurd expressionistic surrealism, but not enough to sell me on Soul Eater as a whole. My Grade: B Sumomomo Momomo Chapter 4: "Dinner, A Bath, Or Me" This chapter serves mainly as exposition, as Koushi's dad explains what the "Heavenly General's War" is all about and why Koushi and Momoko's marriage is so important to the future of Japan. Apparently, there are two large martial arts bloodlines, East and West factions, in Japan that have been fighting for centuries, like the Capulets and Montagues. Koushi and Momoko represent the two sides. It is believed that their union could finally bring about peace. But to do this means that Koushi will have to get involved in a world that he wants no part of. Don't really have a lot to say about this chapter since it was mainly informational, but there is an extremely funny exchange between Momoko and Tenka at its beginning that made me laugh. I enjoy this title. My Grade: B Bamboo Blade Chapter 9: "Kojiro and the Day He Gave Up the Shinai of His Heart" & Chapter 10: "Kojiro and Bento" With the acquisition of Tamaki Kawazoe, Kojiro still needs one more girl for his Kendo team (even though one of them, Saya, has rarely shown up for practice). When Tamaki kicks Kojiro's ass in less than a second during a practice match, it sends him into a funk, wondering how he has come to be so out of form. He also finally gets around to buying his new team some decent equipment for the big match against his rival, now a month away. What can I say, I am a sucker for a manga or anime that features characters dwelling in poverty or at least struggling to make ends meet. That's what really got me hooked on Cowboy Bebop back in the day. They always seemed to have enough money for rice or noodles but never enough for meat. And featuring a poor teacher as the main protagonist in Bamboo Blade is even more laser sighted up my alley. Kojiro is not putting this Seven Samurai-like team together to fight for the honor of Kendo. He's doing it so he'll be able to eat! It's just so inherently funny. I really like all the characters and the humor as well. The weakness comes in the art, mainly in the kendo fights. They tend to be hard to understand and I had difficulty differing between the fighters and exactly what blows they were landing. It's rather unfortunate but the matches, at least in terms of presentation, seem to be getting better. My Grade: B+
Manga review of Honey Hunt Volume 2 by Miki Aihara. Translated by Ari Yasuda. Adapted by Liz Forbes. Originally published in Japan by Shogakukan. Published in US by Viz Shojo Beat, $8.99, Rated T+ for Older Teen. Yura has landed the star role as Natsuki in an ad campaign for noodles that also has a TV show tie-in. Her romantic interest, Q-ta, is doing the theme song, and his brother, Haruka, who seems to be developing an interest in Yura, is acting opposite her. Unfortunately, just as the cast gets together for a photo campaign shoot, Yura's costume is found to have a huge stain on it. How did the stain get there, you might ask? Just ask Minami, another noodle girl, who is extremely jealous of Haruka's attentions towards Yura. Although Yura is able to find a way to save the situation and go on with the shoot, her mettle is constantly tested in this volume. First, she must work with an older actress that has an undying hatred for Yura's mom, and thereby gives Yura a hard time. Even worse, Keiichi begins to market Yura as the daughter of celebrity, playing on her lineage as a selling point to get her noticed. It works, but Keiichi had promised that he would never use her mom and dad to get her breaks or recognition. It only adds to Yura's low self-esteem and refusal to trust anybody. She begins to think about giving up her dream of excelling her mom as an actress. The things I liked about the first volume of Honey Hunt were the plot twists and twisted amorality of almost all the main characters except Yura. It seemed like everyone had some vice, whether hidden or out in the open. Everybody also had their own hidden agenda. The emotional lives of the characters were hateful and unloving. I still remember the scene where Yura's mom and Shin were caught having sex and her mom acted like it was no big deal. She even threw it in her face and said that Shin liked her better than Yura! Even in this volume, Q-ta admits that part of the reason why he likes Yura is because he's a big fan of her dad. All of the characters in Volume 1 probably could have lived quite comfortably in one of Dante's circles of Hell. Volume 2 ratchets down the debauchery a bit and settles more into a typical shojo love triangle motif. Yura likes Q-ta a lot even though she still suspects that he only likes her because of her dad while Haruka finds himself falling for Yura. Minami has become the Sai character that wants to ruin Yura's chances at being a star. Yura's shockingly bad relationship with her parents has receded into the background a bit as she struggles to find the strength to become a real actress. The weakness in the series is definitely the art. It's so bad and thoroughly dull-looking that I found myself staring at some panels, entranced by their amateur quality. All of the character designs are appallingly ugly and unappealing. Aihara also has some problems drawing heads in certain positions. There's really nothing cute or pretty in Yura's appearance either, so it's kinda hard to imagine that she's going to become a big star. I like the story but if the art doesn't improve, I don't know how much longer I can take it. I doubt it's gonna get any better though. So sad.
