In today's Daily Fix:Grand Theft Auto 6 is poised to be the biggest gaming release in year, but so far a PC release has not been confirmed. This comes despite sales of PC ports of major Triple-A games increasing. GTA 6 publisher Take-Two has recently hinted that the game will come to PC, but could only confirm a current-gen console release...for now. In other news, PlayStation Network went down for a whole day over the weekend, and despite giving subscribers 5 free days of the service, gamers want to know exactly what happened. Many cite the 2011 outtage and the theft of user data as the main reason. And finally, Dragon Quest 12 is coming...some day. Square Enix confirmed that work on the title is still ongoing despite the deaths of character designer Akira Toriyama and composer Koichi Sugiyama, and some shake-ups with project leadership.

Broken Chair Scores

This time we really went all in. Not just did the Kaptain massively increase his mic-game, no, I also treated parts of the recording to a full Auphonic spa which means that it sounds even better. But here comes the real kicker: I took the 1:40h original file and tried to smash every "erm" and to delete every false start and word-repetition I could find. I also hardcore erased some of the stuff we said cause it was really not saying a lot. This took me close to fifteen hours of additional work and I was only able to do it because I'm on holiday. The crazy thing is: there are still a lot of "erms" and other useless sounds in there! But it's easily 75% less than in the original file. The main part of the show (without the outtakes) is now only 1 hour and 18 minutes long. This means 22 minutes of "erms" less than usual! This is probably the greatest sounding episode I ever produced! I also finally mixed it down to mono cause I know how some of you like to just put one bud in for the sneaky micro-escape from reality during "quality time" with your "family" (You know that we are your real family. We'll always be there for you.) Anyways, the Kaptain brings the score to the 1976 animated feature film Les Douze travaux d'Astérix written by Gérard Calvi while I present Koichi Sugiyama's score to the 1990 Almanic SNES game E.V.O. Search for Eden (arranged by Motoaki Takenouchi). If you want to support us you can always write a comment here. This would be highly appreciated. We're still on Facebook is what I hear. Definitely none of the other platforms. So if you found us, congrats. You're a connaisseur! If you want me to remaster and re-upload the first 10 episodes you can also write a comment or reach us by sending an email to brokenchairscores@justemail.net. If you're interested in a more relaxed podcast about mostly city building game soundtracks for the PC (think Anno, Settlers, Tycoons from the 90's and onwards) then check out Aufbaumusik. Enjoy!

Music plays an important role in many games, and even in the early days, the best composers were able to create incredibly expressive music, despite technical limitations. Dragon Quest composer, Koichi Sugiyama is known as the pioneer of orchestral music for RPGs, and in 1987 he staged the very first video game music concert in the world. But it took another 16 years for these kinds of orchestral performances to be held outside of Japan. Podcast breakdown: 0:51 Interview 1:05:21 Break 1:06:03 Outro Issues covered: not being able to talk about video game music, researching live performances of video game music, pitching Boss Fight Books, playing a friend's copy of Final Fantasy, racking up Blockbuster fines from pushing the rental, knowing that you're a musician from early on, studying to be an opera singer, having punishing stage fright for performance, getting into the Columbia MFA program, getting a great thesis advisor, the influence of prog rock on FF6's soundtrack, "the steampunk of music," Celtic music as an influence, the other influences you hear, having the Chocobos take you out of the game, the transitions from overworld to Zozo, knowing what to expect from a game vs not, needing a quilt of a game to quilt the music, planet-hopping, doing a lot of work through the music, having to find a way to talk about music through analogy, showing a few examples visually, the subtlety of Relm's musical number, sassy Relm, getting the whole story about Shadow and Relm through multiple playthroughs, the opera scene and "how is it possible," not making any sense to get the airship this way, the game as an opera with a three act structure, reflecting back what's happening in the game, opera as a strange confluence of factors, transcendant beauty that stays with you, opera as its own answer, needing to hear something as an 8x8 square, maintaining the illusion, matches of fidelity, the viewpoint on opera, not being meant to see people up close in opera. This week, we’re talking about the music in Dragon Quest! It’s a special Patreon patron-request episode. Our newest patron, Abigail, belongs to the tier that lets you choose your own episode topic, and she chose music. Which is great. We haven’t really done a full episode on music before, so it’s the perfect time to do that! The music of DQ has always been done by Koichi Sugiyama, who is kind of a turd. Who is Koichi Sugiyama? Should’ve mentioned him in the Old Man episode, because he’s the oldest of them all. He’s officially the oldest video game composer ever. He's approaching 90. He’s worked on a Godzilla film and at least one Gatchaman movie, which kinda ties him indirectly to another famous artist in the video game world beside Akira Toriyama: Amano, who started in the animation department working on Gatchaman anime in the 1970s. Dragon Quest Music: The Beginning  According to legend, Koichi Sugiyama wrote the theme for DQ on his first try in less than five minutes. Although, Sugiyama says…”54" He would get frustrated with Koichi Nakamura (Chunsoft dude) about the music in the earliest Famicom entries because he had high aspirations for the music that just technically couldn’t be done yet. People LOVE “A Lonely Youth” from DQ 2. To me, it seems to be an unofficial favorite. I see so many people loving that song. And I think it’s a good one, but it’s not my favorite. Austin's favorite DQ soundtrack is from 1.0 of DQ X. It’s by far the most eclectic mix of music in a DQ game, and I really love the Eleven stuff, especially in the capital city. The Weddie stuff ain’t bad neither. Beej...doesn't know any particular tracks because he's just about music illiterate. But he loves the fanfare! It makes him feel like going on an adventure! Theatrhythm Dragon Quest People criticize the music of DQ as being too similar, and while that’s fair, I don’t think Sugiyama really cares. I mean, he’s got the DQ Ballet that’s an ode to his music, and an entire video game dedicated to his songs. He’s the only composer in the WORLD who has a video game just for his songs. Even the Theatrhythm Final Fantasy games has music from different composers. The game is cool, and you can download a demo for it onto your 3DS. It’s in Japanese, but it plays like Theatrhythm FF and Guitar Hero, so it’s not super hard to figure out. If you like rhythm games and have played a few, then I don’t think you’ll have a hard time understanding it. This year, I intended to go cheerier… but I didn’t, and instead I’m given you more chilled-to-the-touch levels that evoke Christmas eve in an ice cave. Stay cool. This episode is a sequel to Episode 12, Diamond Dust. Today’s episode on the CINEMATIC SOUND RADIO network is the long-awaited inaugural episode of our NEW orchestral video game show, THE 1UPBEAT with Eric Silver. The show is designed to showcase the very best symphonic music from the video game world and on today’s episode, Eric presents some of the very best music written for video games in 2018. On the program today you will hear music from OCTOPATH TRAVELER by Yasunori Nishiki, GOD OF WAR by Bear Mccreary, NI NO KUNI 2: REVENANT KINGDOM by Joe Hisaishi, MONSTER HUNTER WORLD by Tadayoshi Makino, THE BANNER SAGA 3 by Austin Wintory, and DRAGON QUEST 11 by Koichi Sugiyama. —— ERIC SILVER BIO: Eric Silver was eight years old when he first discovered the joy of movie scores. Like many, John Williams's Star Wars scores inspired a passion and determination to learn music. He worked hard to learn the trumpet by first playing along to these scores, determined to master the memorable melodies by Williams and his contemporaries. As Eric got older, popular movie scores started to take a less prominent and melodic approach, and video games were incorporating more live orchestrations. The melodies of Final Fantasy IV and others mimicked those sweeping movie scores of a now-bygone era. His focus had shifted away from movies as orchestration became the new standard in games. Suddenly, the memorable melodies and emotional magic of game music became his motivation to share it with as many people as possible. Today, as an ex-future music educator, Eric has conducted and arranged for game music concerts and written some of his own music for video games. The tradition of sharing a passion for this music continues with the premiere of The 1UpBeat, which explores some of the best orchestral game music from thirty years ago to today. —— Cinematic Sound Radio Web: http://www.cinematicsound.net Twitter: http://www.twitter.com/cinsoundradio Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/cinematicsound Movie Scores and More Radio http://www.moviescoreradio.com Cinematic Sound Radio Fanfare and Theme by David Coscina https://soundcloud.com/user-970634922 Bumper voice artist: Tim Burden http://www.timburden.com
