ABOUT COACH BILL COURTNEY AND AN ARMY OF NORMAL FOLKS Coach Bill Courtney of Oscar-Winning Undefeated launches 'An Army of Normal Folks' Movement and podcast empower Americans to change our country by 'each of us doing what we can. Business leader and football coach Bill Courtney joins with other "ordinary" Americans doing extraordinary work to solve our nation's problems through the new movement, An Army of Normal Folks. "Our country's problems will never be solved by a bunch of fancy people in nice suits talking big words in Washington, but by An Army of Normal Folks just deciding 'hey, I can help,'" said Courtney. Based on his own example, Courtney is joining with the nonprofit Iron Light Labs to launch An Army of Normal Folks. Founder of Classic American Hardwoods, Inc., in 2003, he became a volunteer football coach in America's third poorest zip code and yet 31 out of 32 seniors in his last two seasons went to college. Their success on and off the field was the subject of the documentary film, Undefeated, which won an Academy Award in 2012. "We believe that everyone has the power to create change, no matter how 'ordinary' they or their actions may seem," said Courtney. "And if there's An Army of Normal Folks just doing what we can, imagine how different our country could be." As part of the movement, Courtney hosts the iHeartMedia podcast An Army of Normal Folks. iHeartMedia is the No. 1 podcast publisher globally according to Podtrac. The podcast features interviews with members of the Army such as Arkansas Police Officer Tommy Norman and Back on My Feet Founder Anne Mahlum. It aims to inspire listeners and present fascinating models that can be replicated in their own communities. All individuals are invited to join An Army of Normal Folks. AN ARMY OF NORMAL FOLKS - BACKGROUNDAmerica is at a crossroads. While still having an enviable position in the 21st century, we also suffer from deep divisions, both perceived and very real. From politics and culture to race and religion, Americans seem to disagree on almost everything. These challenges are complex and multifaceted. And they're not being solved by politicians. Instead, the greatest power lies in the hands of ordinary citizens doing what they can in their own communities. And if each of us does this, just imagine how different our country could be.Our solution is An Army of Normal Folks.A grassroots movement led by Coach Bill Courtney, former volunteer football coach of Manassas High School and the subject of the 2012 Academy Award-winning documentary Undefeated, An Army of Normal Folks brings together Americans of all stripes committed to "doing what we can." Bill and his fellow changemakers believe that by taking action in ordinary but meaningful ways, such as volunteering, donating, and changing even only one other person's life, An Army of Normal Folks can make all of the difference. This is how America can overcome its problems: one life and one community at a time.Featuring stories of ordinary folks overcoming life's obstacles and their own demons to make an extraordinary difference, the "An Army of Normal Folks" podcast provides a rallying cry for every individual to join a movement that can change the country. The iHeart Radio podcast, which is hosted by Courtney, launched in May 2023 and delivers much-needed inspirational, redemptive, and unifying content. Episodes include fellow members of the Army, such as:● Tommy Norman, North Little Rock Police Officer known as the "Michael Jordan of Community Policing"● Anne Mahlum, Back on My Feet founder that's helped over 7,500 homeless Americans secure jobs and independent housing through running● Luke Mickelson, Sleep in Heavenly Peace founder whose 270 chapters have built over 140,000 beds for kids without them● Rodney Smith Jr., Raising Men and Women Lawn Care founder who's inspired over 4,300 kids to take the "50 Yard Challenge" of cutting 50 lawns for free for those in need● Arshay Cooper, rower, the protagonist of the critically acclaimed film A Most Beautiful Thing and leader in starting inner-city rowing programs● Jon Ponder, a three-time convicted felon whose nonprofit Hope for Prisoners has helped over 4,700 returning citizens in Las Vegas, with only an 8% recidivism rate● Erin Smith, head of the CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) program in Northwest Mississippi, and Thomas, a former foster care child she mentored● Chavis Daniels, a former Manassas Tiger football player under Coach Bill's leadership who has since mentored over 1,000 kids in Memphis● Bob Zaccheo, who offers "therapy under the hood of a car" to over 5,000 at-risk kids through Project LIFTWILLIAM B. (BILL) COURTNEY BIOWilliam B. Courtney (Bill), a native Memphian, launched An Army of Normal Folks in 2023 on the belief that if each of us just does what we can in our own communities, we can change the country. Bill doesn't just "talk the talk;" he knows this sentiment to be true. A successful business owner, Bill founded Classic American Hardwoods, Inc. in 2001. He continues to operate the company, which today employs 140 people with a 45-acre manufacturing facility and domestic sales offices in Memphis, Tennessee and international sales offices in Shanghai, China and Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. As the son of a single mom who married five guys, Bill had many coaches who were his real father figures and invested in him. Because of this, helping other kids like himself has been a central part of his life.In 2003, Bill began volunteering as a football coach at Memphis' inner-city Manassas High School in an effort to turn around its underperforming football team of 19 players with a dismal 4-95, 10-year record. The school is located in a neighborhood where young men are three times more likely to be dead or in jail than have a job or be in college. Prior to Bill's involvement, the Manassas Tigers football team had never won a playoff game in its 110-year history. Under Bill's leadership, the team's record improved to 18-2 with 75 players in the 2008 and 2009 seasons. But Bill's involvement went beyond football. "My philosophy on coaching doesn't start with X's and O's. it starts with believing that players win games and coaches win players," he stated. Bill became a mentor to the mostly fatherless young men on the team, teaching them leadership skills, assisting them academically and caring for their physical and emotional needs. During his final two seasons coaching, 31 out of their 32 seniors went to college, which rarely happens in a neighborhood like Manassas. The story of Bill coaching inspired the Hollywood film, Undefeated, which won the 2012 Academy Award for Best Feature Length Documentary. While Bill ended his coaching career with the Manassas Tigers in 2012, he continues to coach a variety of teams and support efforts in and around Memphis. He is the co-founder of Man Rise, an organization that gives financial support to help five city schools with their football programs. He previously served on the board of Orphanos Foundation and supports St. Jude Children's Research Hospital and The North Memphis Steelers, a mentoring and athletics association founded by Chavis Daniels, one of the central figures featured in Undefeated. Bill's achievements and service have been recognized by several entities. In 2011, he was inducted into Bridge Builders for leadership in diversity, community and justice. He was the 2012 recipient of the Liberty Bowl's Harry Zinn Spirit of 1776 award for distinguished citizenship, recipient of the Carnival Memphis' King's Award for Outstanding Achievement in Business and Industry, and the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame Memphis chapter's award winner for the distinguished American for Contribution to Amateur Athletics. In 2013, he was inducted into the prestigious Society of Entrepreneurs for his success in business and community service. He is the author of "Against the Grain: A Coach's Wisdom on Character, Faith, Family, and Love," released in 2014, and is a national speaker on topics of leadership, character and business. He was a keynote speaker at the Paralympics in Colorado Springs, with Nike, PepsiCo, FedEx, and other nationally recognized companies, and has spoken at numerous churches, schools and hospitals.Bill also hosts "An Army of Normal Folks," a podcast launched in May 2023. Bill is a graduate of The University of Mississippi. GUEST OVERVIEW: Rodney Smith Jr, is Founder of Raising Men & Women Lawn Care Service (501C3) #50YardChallenge GUEST OVERVIEW: Mark Powell is a Former San Diego County Board of Education Member.
This week, we talk about getting ready for that big thing you've always wanted to do, with the help of our past two guest BryantDaCellist and Rodney Smith Jr.
How can you change the world? May try by just mowing your neighbor's lawn. This guy did it.
Rodney Smith Jr. started a lawn business as a means to put himself through college. He saw an elderly woman trying to mow her lawn and offered to help, free of charge. That simple act has led him to offer free lawn care services to the elderly, single mothers, and veterans. Since that time, he has invited youth from around the world to join in serving others through the 50-yard challenge (mowing 50 lawns for free). Now, nearly 4,000 kids in all 50 states and 8 countries around the world have accepted the challenge making a positive impact in the communities they live. Learn about Rodney and how a simple act of service can turn into a movement.
In this episode Sammie talks to Rodney Smith Jr, founder of Raising Men and Women Lawn Care Service. Rodney encourages kids to take a challenge of mowing 50 yards free for elderly, veterans, and single parents. Rodney also just wrapped up a 50-state holiday tour visiting kids with illnesses and bringing them gifts and good cheer with fellow humanitarian Yuri Williams. Find out how Sammie first came in contact with Rodney and about their recent meeting in person. This episode will fill you with hope and probably make you want to go out and shovel a driveway or mow a lawn for someone that needs it. Don't forget to listen until the end for the fun rapid-fire round and to find out what makes Rodney smile.
Welcome back to Be The Good with Kate, where we are all about people doing good in the world while following their passions. Good for their own souls and for others. The founder of Raising Men & Women Lawn Care Service, Rodney Smith Jr., started mowing lawns in Alabama as a way to give back— he now runs a nationwide nonprofit empowering youth to make a difference in their communities. I do not know how he found the time to chat with me today, but I am certainly grateful he did. Interestingly, this ended up being one of the shortest episodes, yet it is SO rich and full. Rodney has such an obvious passion, and he is so clear about his mission and his motivation. See a need, do something about it. That is the most simplistic yet powerful way to describe this episode. In 2015, Rodney saw an elderly man who looked like he was struggling to mow his lawn, so Rodney offered to help. Just a few years later, he has 3000 kids taking part nationwide in his 50 Lawn Challenge (see their great posts on Instagram), he has been on every major news outlet, and he has traveled the United States 10 times giving kids free lawn care equipment in every single state (plus two more tours of the US giving out Christmas gifts to kids in need!).. From the start, and then even more so since the start of the pandemic, he has been able to offer kids a chance to get outside, do something to help others, and interact safely with other members of the community. And each helps those members of the community who need assistance . If you have a child who wants to get involved, listen at the end as Rodney tells about what he's up to over the next couple of weeks to help give more kids access to lawn care equipment for free. It's easy to lump border security issues with immigration, but they are very separate things with very different stories. The people pouring through unsecured borders or living in this country illegally create an imbalance in this country and divisiveness among Americans. But people like Rodney Smith Jr, who not only elect to come here and go through the legal path to citizenship, but create an enormous positive impact on this country in the process, set a powerful example of not just the possibility of the American Dream, but the ability to achieve it in the way our forefathers envisioned. In this episode, Barb Allen talks with Rodney about his path to citizenship, the incredible impact he is having on Americans already, and how he is using lawn mowers to make that impact.Subscribe To The NewsletterFollow Us On All PlatformsJoin The Great American Syndicate

Rodney Smith Jr is the owner of Raising Men Lawn Care Service. Episode 291 Raising Men Lawn Care Service is the union of an ordinary yard maintenance service and the commitment to establish an inspiring program to keep our youth (girls & boys) on a positive path while learning and understanding their value in society. RMLS provides free lawn care to our elders, those who are disabled, single mothers and our veterans, who do not have the time, resources and/or money to manicure their yards. Their mission is to unite the extraordinary community that is present in their local area. They are completely confident in the fact that they can provide a very inspirational program that focuses on channeling the energy that youths have in a positive way as well as helping those who need it the most. They know that sometimes youth want to help the community and sometimes people need it, but it can be hard to know who, why and where. They focus on getting all of this sorted out while also helping people around the area to care for and maintain their lawns. On this episode of the podcast, we talk to Rodney about the great work he's doing to help others and how his faith in Jesus guides him to want to serve and give back. This podcast is less about sports and more about showing the love of God to others.
“Once day I saw an elderly man cutting grass and something just hit me. God was talking to me (saying)⏤‘Do something about it.’” It was that one split decision when Rodney Smith Jr. pulled his car to the side of the road to offer Mr. Brown a helping hand to finish cutting his lawn⏤that would change his life forever. Mr. Brown became the inspiration for Rodney to help more people. He set an initial goal to cut forty lawns for free. It was his way of giving back to folks who needed the help, but didn't have the money to pay for lawn services. The elderly, the disabled, single moms and veterans would be the recipient of Rodney's generosity. "When I first started, I just had my car and my lawn mower, that's all I had," explains Rodney Smith Jr., "I was cutting lawns between classes. I was a college student, and just graduated recently with a bachelor's in computer science. All this got me wanting to go back for my master's in social work because I believe I found my purpose in life, and that's helping people." The purpose that Rodney points out has now turned into a movement of giving back; caring for those in need; looking out for a fellow neighbor; and teaching the upcoming generation skills, generosity and an appreciation for thy fellow man. After two months of cutting lawns for free, Rodney had reached 100 lawns and decided it was time to put the movement into overdrive. The story continues on the Brink of Greatness Podcast… The Next Leap Forward Hundreds of kids have joined the program throughout the country, but it doesn't stop there⏤kids from five other countries have accepted the challenge of cutting lawns for free. Raising Men Lawn Care Service became the union of an ordinary yard maintenance service and the commitment to establish an inspiring program to keep our youth (girls & boys) on a positive path while learning and understanding their value in society, as explained on their website. One of the methods Rodney has used to incentivize the kids to 'work harder' is through the T-Shirt System. When a young man or woman join the program, they start off with a white shirt. Thereafter, for every ten lawns they cut, they get a new color shirt, so ten get them an orange shirt; twenty a green shirt; thirty a blue shirt; forty a red shirt; and finally FIFTY LAWNS earn them a black shirt. It's called the 50 Yard Challenge. I encourage you to take the 50 Minute Challenge. Take 50 minutes out of your day, step back and think about your own legacy. What is the lasting impression you wish to leave on the world? How can you make a difference in 50 lives? Think about it. On this #landscapechat podcast, guest Kate Spirgen, managing editor at Lawn & Landscape, joins us to celebrate the “goodness of green” or in other words, how green spaces give back to everyone, and how the green industry is giving back to their communities. Kate also highlights the efforts of one individual, Rodney Smith Jr, who was the cover story of the August 2018 issue. His vision of 50 States/ 50 Lawns has helped out many Americans having difficulty maintaining their yards. And the only thing he asked in return was a selfie with the homeowner to share online. It's a great inspirational piece, that outlines how one person can make a enormous difference in the world today. Rachel and Chad interview Rodney Smith Jr. who is mowing lawns to bless people after he heard a message from God. #ChangingTheNarrative
One simple act of kindness can transform a life, at least it did for Rodney Smith Jr. On his way home from his college classes, Rodney saw an elderly man struggling to mow his lawn and decided to finish the job for him. He's since founded Raising Men Lawn Care Service which encourages boys and girls to provide free lawn care to those who are unable to do so. He has also mowed a lawn for free in all fifty states and plans to do so again soon. Connect with Rodney on Twitter @iamRodneySmith or on his website at http://weareraisingmen.com.
When Rodney Smith, Jr. spots someone in need, he jumps into action. There's no question, doubt, or debate. He just does the work to help them—and he's now rallying others to help communities across the United States. Rodney, a native of Bermuda, started Raising Men Lawn Care Service, an organization that provides free yard services to elders, people with disabilities, veterans, and single-parent mothers. The service matches up youth in local communities with people in need of service. This two-way impact helps children become a positive part of the community learning social skills and giving back, and the recipients receive assistance with maintaining their yards. This service and the positive news of Rodney's work has spread across the US (and multiple countries too!) and continues to grow, with local chapters, and children signing up for the 50 Yard Challenge. In addition, Rodney brings his family (his name for his thriving and very engaged online community) together to help other members of his local community. He's been helping people that are homeless, by providing resources and food, collected and provided by his family. I met Rodney at his home in Huntsville, AL and we got right back on the road. I wanted to see firsthand how the service works. We spent the afternoon taking care of a yard and then learning more about the homeless community he's been helping. This was truly an immersive experience. After multiple conversations and experiences at a yard, in a homeless camp, in the car, and back at Rodney's house, I couldn't be more inspired by how much Rodney cared about the people in his community. Interestingly, it didn't seem like a big deal to him. Instead he just told me "it was the right thing to do." This was an amazing day, and I took a couple important ideas away from it: help however you can, and each of us can be the change at any time. Also, this trip was a beautiful reminder to get out of our bubbles (social and geographical) to see different parts of the world, and learn and connect with people different than ourselves.
