Then we talk about some incredible stories that occurred in the Big East during his playing days and one hilarious story you'll have to hear about his coaching journey. We talk about the landscape of college hoops today and how the transfer ruling from the other day will be impacting the season. Tom Brennan went from a small town in New Jersey to playing basketball at the University of Georgia, where he played for Dean Smith's former assistant Ken Rosemond and won a senior leadership award. While he was at UGA, he had the difficult task of trying to slow down the college basketball phenom in the country, Pistol Pete Maravich. A UGA grad assistant role helped him learn the coaching ropes and he then assisted Bill Raftery at Seton Hall, Rollie Massimino at Villanova, and Bruce Parkhill at William & Mary. Tom coached basketball and baseball at Fairleigh Dickinson before being named head coach at Yale University, where he guided players like Chris Dudley and Butch Graves. Tom then took the head coaching job at the University of Vermont. The Catamounts had never been to the NCAA Tournament, but Tom turned them into a perennial power in the America East Conference. He became a fan favorite, co-hosting the Corm and the Coach radio show and becoming “a citizen of the community” in Burlington. Tom led the Catamounts to three straight conference titles and NCAA Tournament runs, culminating in an upset of top-ranked Syracuse. After 19 seasons, Tom moved onto broadcasting for ESPN and CBS, and Vermont named its basketball court in his honor. In this episode, Tom shares:What it was like guarding Pistol Pete MaravichHow he got addicted to the rush of coaching basketballWhat he learned working for legendary coaches Bill Raftery, Bruce Parkhill & Rollie Massimino Why he left Yale and the Ivy League to coach at Vermont, and what kept him there for 19 yearsHow strong relationships & trusting 4-year point guards led to championships What advice Jerry Tarkanian (Tark) gave him before the Syracuse gameHow T.J. Sorrentine and Taylor Coppenrath helped take down Syracuse's roster of future NBA playersWhy he was never afraid of his team losingHow he knew Jay Wright was going to become a brilliant coach

In 1979, Jim Boeheim was one of the original Big East personalities, along with John Thompson, Lou Carnesecca and Bill Raftery. Jim and Lesley - who covered the Big East from the beginning - shared memories of the early days, including the time Rick Pitino and Rollie Massimino almost got into a fist-fight at the coach's seminar. Jim said the coaches fought all the time until Commissioner Dave Gavitt would tell them to "Stop, just Stop." Jim said Georgetown was the best defensive team he'd faced in 44 years of coaching, until battling Virginia in the ACC, and that Pearl Washington was the most electrifying college player he's ever seen. In this wide-ranging conversation, Jim talked about everything from his once-scratch golf game to the effects of Name-Image-Likeness on recruiting. Lesley's been around Jim for decades, including in 1994, when he courted his wife Juli at the Kentucky Derby party of a mutual friend. Lesley looked across the room and saw Jim and Juli on a beautiful chintz couch, playing backgammon! (yes, you read that right.) His focus now is on getting Syracuse back to the Sweet 16 while coaching his two sons, Buddy and Jimmy, starting with the -pre-season "Battle for Atlantis" in the Bahamas.

He talks about growing up in Barrington, Illinois, being the grandson of the late Rollie Massimino, being from a basketball family, and his basketball career through high school. Tommy explains why he chose to attend Villanova, the process of becoming a student manager, all of the duties involved, learning to cut film, and what it was like working for Head Coach Jay Wright. He then details his time at Iowa working under Head Coach Fran McCaffery, making the jump to the NBA, his time working for the Denver Nuggets, and working with Ed Pinckney. For 33 years, Rick Byrd roamed the sidelines of Belmont University, where he led Bruins prorgam before retiring on April 1, 2019, finishing his career with the 12th most wins in NCAA Division I men's basketball history.
