As we prepare to launch our fourth season at iHeartRadio, we're revisiting some of host Alec Baldwin's favorite episodes from the archives. In this episode, Alec digs into the minds behind the processing of the 1.3 billion gallons of wastewater, 16 million pounds of trash and eight million pounds of recyclables that New York City produces every day. Pam Elardo is the former Deputy Commissioner of New York City's Department of Environmental Protection, leading the city's Bureau of Wastewater Treatment. Ron Gonen was New York City's first "Recycling Czar" and now thinks about the problems of waste-management from the perspective of a businessman: he's the CEO of a major investment fund looking for the Next Big Idea in recycling. Pam and Ron walk Alec through what happens from the moment people flush the toilet or toss out their coffee-cup -- and they talk about the big-picture environmental impact of our choices. And since this is Here's the Thing, Alec also learns the incredible life stories each one brings to the job -- from Pam's persistence in the face of the sexism that discouraged women engineers of her generation, to Ron's luck stumbling into the home of a prominent environmentalist while doing housework to make ends meet for his family as a kid.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

I love talking about food waste. It's one of the biggest contributors to emissions and something that we all contribute to every day. Reducing how much food goes uneaten is, of course, a big part of the solution, but there'll always be organic waste. If it sits in a landfill, it'll emit methane and miss the chance to be used as a resource.Today's episode focuses on an Israeli startup that sees organic waste as a precious resource. HomeBiogas turns waste into fuel onsite to be used for heating and cooking. They're off to the races selling their products for a range of applications – from backyards to hotels – and they're just getting started. We're joined today by HomeBiogas' founder Oshik Efrati, and one of their key investors Ron Gonen from Closed Loop Partners. We talk about both guests' backgrounds, the challenges and opportunities to create a circular economy, anaerobic digestion, how HomeBiogas turns waste into energy, the opportunity they see, and much more. Here we go. In today's episode, we cover:[3:03] Oshik's background & what led him to launch HomeBiogas[4:51] Ron's experience in recycling and waste & what led him to founding Closed Loop Partners[7:08] Closed Loop Partner & the ways it's working to eliminate waste[9:06] The impact of waste on climate & why solutions are needed[10:32] How Oshik sees the problem & what his company is working to solve[11:43] How HomeBiogas is approaching the problem[13:44] Anaerobic digestion & what else makes HomeBiogas' systems possible[16:09] The potential that Closed Loop Partners sees in HomeBiogas as an investor[17:43] Oshik's view of the market opportunity[18:19] Measuring climate & environmental impacts[19:51] HomeBiogas' traction, different applications & go-to-market[21:06] The process of converting waste to energy in buildings[22:25] The toilet market & what HomeBiogas is able to do with human waste[24:33] What's most critical to HomeBiogas' success[25:39] Partnerships that HomeBiogas has developed & is looking for now[28:06] The residential market in the US[31:19] The next few years from a business & impact perspective[33:03] How does this space compare to other circular economy verticals[34:22] What else is needed for realizing the circular economyResources MentionedHomeBiogas Closed Loop PartnersConnect with Oshik Efrati & Ron GonenConnect with Oshik on LinkedInConnect with Ron on LinkedInConnect with Jason RissmanOn LinkedInOn TwitterKeep up with Invested In ClimateSign up for our Newsletter

In this episode, we talk with Ron Gonen, who is the founder of Closed Loop Partners, and the author of The Waste-Free World: How the Circular Economy Will Take Less, Make More, and Save the Planet. Ron believes we have a challenge in the American economy -- and a little bit in the U.K. as well some other developed countries -- where the highest status in society goes sometimes to the jobs that don't always create the most social benefit or require the most amount of intellect. The jobs of teacher, fire person, police person, public servants, soldier are the backbone of our society. Unfortunately, the status we've assigned to those jobs, and the financial incentive, is low in society. We hope you enjoy this conversation.

The next generation is the one that owns it and view it with a sense of ownership and a sense of pride and a sense of protection because there are a lot of benefits you get from nature.”Ron Gonen is the Founder and CEO of Closed Loop Partners, a New York Based investment firm that focuses on building the circular economy. Closed Loop Partners invests in products and services that don't depend on natural resource extraction or the disposal of those products in land fill to be successful. Closed Loop is a VC through buyout stage investor in the circular economy – proving that the circular economy is much more economical and higher quality than the companies of the last century. Through their investments, Closed Loop is showing that “those that profited in the previous era will be consigned to their rightful place: the waste bin of history”. Ron Gonen learned about the value and cost of waste as New York City's Deputy Commissioner of Sanitation and brings that lens to reshape how our economy uses resources and then recycles.

Ron Gonen, CEO of Closed Loop Partners and Author of his new book “The Waste Free World” talks about his experience as an entrepreneur when he started RecycleBank and then became the Deputy Commissioner of Sanitation, Recycling, and Sustainability in New York City that eventually led him to start Closed Loop Partners where he focuses on strategically investing in companies that are involved with building the Circular Economy. We discuss what led him to write his new book and how we ended up in this situation where we have been scammed to believe that the “Take, Make, Waste” linear economy is good for us and how its driven our focus on Gross Domestic Product (GDP) which has been used as a measurement of economic success in our country. Ultimately, we discuss how a Circular Economy is more cost effective, better for the environment, and will saves us money. All we need now is to start building the infrastructure to really help us transition into a fully functioning Circular Economy. The Waste Free World' reveals the history behind the acceleration of wasteful "linear consumption", which, according to author and Closed Loop Partners founder Ron Gonen, has cheated us out of taxpayer money, lucrative innovation, and a habitable planet. As the Recycling Czar under Mayor Bloomberg, he knows a thing or two about it. In the book, he makes a solid argument for a circular economic model, which we discuss in our interview. As always, we welcome your feedback.
