Mark Stern is reimagining direct mail with experiential boxes designed to set your customers up for success and extend lifetime value.  Mark is a serial entrepreneur and founder of the Custom Box Agency, a design agency that specializes in optimizing the customer journey through direct mail. His innovative work caught the attention of Forbes, which featured him as one of the Next 1,000 Entrepreneurs redefining the American Dream. He was also highlighted in Joey Coleman's Wall Street Journal Bestseller, Never Lose an Employee Again. Before embarking on his entrepreneurial path, Stern was a top-ranked strategy consultant at Deloitte Consulting, the world's largest consulting firm. He is an MBA graduate from Duke University. Stern is also a six-time Spartan Trifecta holder and serves as a mentor at South by Southwest (SXSW), guiding up-and-coming startups.  Connecting the Digital to the Physical The idea for the Custom Box Agency was born out of Mark's experience buying online courses. After spending $2,000+ on a course, he was left to print out the workbook or go to the store to track down what he needed to get started. Oftentimes, he didn't end up starting at all. He began to wonder how course creators could better set their students up for success–beyond simply sending swag with the company logo. When Mark started shipping out his boxes, the idea immediately caught on. People shared unboxing videos and became unofficial ambassadors and salespeople for the business. In the first year, Custom Box Agency grew from zero to a million dollars in revenue, all through organic word-of-mouth. The 3 Customer Journeys One key aspect of Mark's custom box business is tailoring the boxes to the customer journey. There are three different types of journeys throughout the customer lifecycle: acquisition, delivery, and retention. And within those journeys, there are multiple steps. On the acquisition journey, prospects might discover you through social media, SEO, or in-person events. After someone finds you, you don't necessarily want to pitch them right away–those are cold leads. So you might nurture them through case studies, demos, or free content to build more of a relationship with them. From there, you have to close them as a customer. What does the point of sale look like?  After someone buys your product, you need to take them from onboarding to delivering the value you promised. Retention involves recognizing your clients. How do you celebrate them when they hit a milestone or introduce the next way that you can serve them? For over 30 years, Robin Green has provided Investment Consultants and DC Advisors with competitive analyses, practice management coaching, client service strategies, and sales consulting. She started her career as a plan sponsor, overseeing retirement plans in the healthcare and manufacturing sectors. After being recruited by Ann Schleck at Deloitte Consulting, she dedicated 11 years to the retirement plan and health benefits industries. Prior to launching her own consulting firm in 2017, she served as Head of Research at Ann Schleck & Co., and then as Senior Vice President at Fi360 where she managed the Fiduciary Score. Throughout 2023 and 2024, Robin collaborated with many of the top 100 DC Advisor practices in the United States to help them benchmark their business against industry standards. This work involved RFP analysis, win/loss assessments, client satisfaction research, client retention strategies, and a competitive review of products and services, as well as coaching on business models and internal processes. Her consulting practice is underpinned by confidential, competitive insights collected from retirement advisors through the 2024 Level Up - DC Advisor Practice Management Benchmarking Study, which engaged 84 DC Specialist Advisors across 319 offices. Robin and her team conducted both qualitative interviews and quantitative research to gain insights into how retirement specialists manage their operations. Or are you a CEO or a CFO or in-house counsel who reports to a board of directors or these shareholders? Well, this show is for you. And it's about how the healthcare industry has become financialized at the same time that providing health benefits has become the second-biggest line item after payroll for most companies. We talked about that in a recent encore with Mark Cuban (EP418) also, as well as the show with Cora Opsahl (EP452) and Claire Brockbank (EP453) from 32BJ. So, this encore with Andreas Mang is really timely. And even if you've listened to the show when it originally aired a year ago, you may want to take another listen, because in the context of these recent shows, this one really slots right in there. And also, by the way, the one with Julie Selesnick (EP428) from last year talking about the legal jeopardy currently in play. So, this show isn't really about health benefits; it's about the business that these health benefits have become and how, if the CEO or CFO of an employer is not intimately involved in the financial layer wrapping around health benefits, then the company is getting really taken advantage of by those entities who are intimately familiar with the financial layer surrounding those healthcare benefits. And the employees of that company also are getting equally taken advantage of. This is not a case where paying more or less results in better or worse employee health or healthcare. It is a case where not minding the shop in the C-suite means that financial actors just take more of the pie and nobody wins but them. Employer loses; employee loses. Andreas Mang, my guest today, kicks off this interview talking about the conversation that will go down between himself and any CEO whose company gets bought by Blackstone. So, if you're a CEO and you're aspiring for this to happen, yeah … heads up. But he says it's kind of an unnatural act to dig into anything that smells like health benefits or health insurance. Some may not even realize that this whole financial layer has developed that sits above the healthcare benefits themselves. And they also may not think that there's anything that's possible that can be done. As far as both of these points are concerned, Andreas Mang gives a list of, as he calls them, easy things a C-suite can do to save 10% while improving employee satisfaction and health. Saving 10% or more, this can be a really big number. A lot of this is just enforcing purchasing discipline that is being used elsewhere. Here's Andreas's list recapped: 1. Have CFO engagement throughout the year. (We talked about that with Mark Cuban also.) 2. Be self-insured once you have reached a certain size. (Andreas gets into this in more detail during the show itself.) 3. Be very, very careful who you hire as your broker or benefits consultant. There are five things that need to be true: ·      They have the experience to do the job. ·      Flat-fee model compensation ·      No product pushing ·      Fees at risk (30% or more) ·      Simple termination provisions 4. Do carrier/ASO/TPA RFPs once every three years or thereabouts. 5. Do dependent eligibility audits. (Cora Opsahl talked a lot about this also in an earlier episode [EP372].) 6. Leverage pharmacy coalitions and stop-loss collectives. (In the show itself, Andreas offers some warnings because some of these coalitions and collectives are great and some are not.) But bottom line, just keep in mind, as Mark Cuban said (EP418), those that are taking your money, your company's money, are advantaged when you are confused. Where there's mystery, there's margin. If you can't convince 'em, confuse 'em and all that. This is a business strategy. Healthcare should not be this complicated. But yet, it has become so; and anyone who doesn't realize that is letting themselves and their employees really get taken advantage of. Unknown unknowns are not benign. As I have said several times already, Andreas Mang is my guest today. He is a partner at Blackstone, the private equity and alternative asset manager. His job is helping portfolio companies manage their U.S. healthcare benefits for their employees. He is also the former Dean of Faculty of the Harvard Business School. Manufacturing has made a comeback, and employers say they are not done hiring. Do you have the skills they want?

In this episode of Work in Progress, I'm joined by Carolyn Lee, president and executive director of The Manufacturing Institute, to talk about what's behind the comeback in manufacturing jobs in the U.S. and what employers need to do to fill another 3.8 million jobs over the next eight years. "We are at a all-time high since the Great Recession with manufacturing jobs filled here in the sector," says Lee. "We're just hovering at 13 million and that means we have recovered from all the jobs that were originally lost during the Great Recession and now we have gone back up all the way to the top of the mountain." What's behind the resurgence in hiring? Lee cites a number of reasons: consumer demand and spending has been strong since COVID, a favorable tax environment, and the drive to invest federal money through the CHIPS and Science Act and the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act. "From the CHIPS Act, there have been huge announcements of investment from Intel in Ohio. You have large investments being made in Texas and then a number of very large investments in Arizona. as well, and that's just specific to CHIPS. If you look at EV manufacturing, there's huge investments in Kansas and in Alabama and in Georgia and the Southeast," she tells me. Lee adds, "Not only has it been the CHIPS and the Infrastructure Bill that have driven a lot of government funding, there is a huge grants program out of the Department of Commerce, the Good Jobs Act, which came from a previous set of legislation that helped invest in job training. That's something The Manufacturing Institute team has been working on in a number of regions including Fresno, California, Ohio, and Texas." She says employers continue to hire, but there are still almost 600,000 open jobs in the industry every month. Lee cites a report from The Manufacturing Institute and Deloitte Consulting which forecasts that over the next eight years, the manufacturing industry will need as many as 3.8 million additional workers, many with these digital skills. The report lays out a strategy to help employers fill those jobs, particularly through investing in worker training. Lee and I discuss what this means for the worker and job seeker and why they should consider being one of those millions of in-demand workers needed in manufacturing. He co-founded BrightCanary, a service that helps parents engage and prepare kids for digital lives, in 2022. Prior to starting BrightCanary, was a VP at T-Mobile USA, where he led M&A and operations for T-Mobile Advertising. T-Mobile Advertising, currently over $500m in annual revenue, was formed when a company Karl co-founded, PushSpring, was acquired by T-Mobile in 2019. Karl has had numerous other technology-related roles, including a board seat with Decisive Farming, a leader in the AgTech space, that was sold in Telus in 2019 and driving the business strategy and sale of Mobiata, which created FlightTrack a mobile app for travel, to Expedia. Prior to working in technology, Karl was a management consultant with Deloitte Consulting. While the “short-termists” that are using AI to minimize expenses might please shareholders for a brief period of time, Mike says the companies that have a longer-term view on the combination of their people and these powerful tools will ultimately be winners in this unique period in business.
